Donde esta Senor Messi? I normally write my Chairman’s note midweek but am away in Barcelona for 4 days with Jane so it’s a Sunday morning write up this week. I am looking forward to my trip and enjoying the delights of the City. Bad planning means their Champions league game is away this week and Southampton’s live TV game on Monday night may not be a key feature in Jane’s plans for Monday evening – whatever the result from Villa Park the Saints will still be 2

nd.

Great results for the men with just 1 loss and the two draws (OBs and 6ths) seeing come backs from 3-0 and 2-0 down at half time. The 1sts ground out a 3-2 win – good result from a scratchy performance. Big wins for the 2, 3 & 4s who all remain in promotion contention. I was able to watch the 6ths go 2-0 down at half time when it was an even half.

They dominated the 2nd

half scored midway, had a goal disallowed and with 3 minutes to go took off Stu in goal to press for the equaliser. Then with a minute left a short corner was scored and the crowd went wild. Stu who had taken half his kit off was called back on for the last minute. What excitement. The Ladies 1sts grabbed a point at Henley with a great defensive performance and have 1 game to go to the halfway break. The 3rds thumped Teddington and the 4ths remain top. I also took in the 2

nd half of the 5ths game where they were unlucky

not to get a point. Team of the week goes to the Men's 1sts – winning ugly. Stobby I owe you a beer. There are 8 tickets available for the 5 a side in January at Wembley Arena. Let me know ASAP if you want to come along. Saturday sees me at Twickenham again hosting a box so please don’t think I am there to enjoy myself its work all the way for me. If you can support the two 1

st teams on Saturday the

ladies at 12.00 and men at 1.30 will really appreciate your vocal help. Any way must sign off as I need to supervise Jane packing my case. Roberto

Thursday, we played a good first half and dominated the midfield the battle with good work from Lenny (also the elder!), Miss, Hels (the younger tank version) and Whipster. Numerous through balls were on offer for Lucy, Sophie and Macca to chase after (note to self - must get faster!!....magic shorts??). The second half saw quite a bit more pressure from Henley but the force field around our goal of Lil, Eye, Em and Helen's Magic Shorts enabled us to keep a clean sheet despite near to 20 PCs for them! Diving goal line saves from Lil, Hels the Elder (and her Magic shorts) and Eye denied our opponents time and time again, and fortunately for Em a number of us know the rule change re: own goals and calmly and quietly led by Lil politely explained to the ump that it surely wasn't a goal! Our best chance came from a Hels (the younger tank version) deflection from a Macca straight strike in what was our only PC of the game - no clue how the defender kept that ball out (she must have had some magic shorts too!?). Last league before the break next week away at Oxford - be great to give new coach Alfie a 3 point Christmas present! Good luck to everyone else in the run up to Christmas! Macca MOM - Hels the Elder (and her Magic Shorts!) DOD - Macca for getting locked in the loo and needing Alfie to kick the door open (all good match prep!). Christmas pressie list - Magic shorts

Men’s 1’s v PHC Chiswick 1’s Saturday 22nd November Won 3 – 2

Choo Choo With a game against PHC Chiswick next to Acton Town tube station it was all aboard the Piccadilly line for this away trip. Gareth gave the ball to Will. Sadly I failed to ride the banter train to the game with the others as I had to make a stop off at Tesco for food and water (not trusting that I'd be able to lay my hands on essential supplies in the Liverpool Victoria sports Ground and environs. Gareth gave the ball to Will. Though given some of the travel plans that were being talked about beforehand this maybe was a prudent choice. So, after a journey annoying other passengers with the my smelly hockey kit and a short walk to the pitch, I found my team having a pregame chat, musing on Euro's terrible dress sense - most amusing, though this was swiftly eclipsed by the entertainment of watching Chunky attempts at reverse parking. Gareth gave the ball to Will. Moving onto the hockey, it wasn't great. We knew they had one decent forward - the bald bloke up front. Gareth gave the ball to Will. Needless to say we didn't mark him for the first 10 minutes and went 1-0 down. Luckily, the Sams combined to equalise via the thinnest of deflections (important point for later). Gareth gave the ball to Will. We went 2-1 down though via a Chiswick short corner back to the injector. Also, Tommy bravely (brainlessly) went charging headlong into a tackle - unfortunately the Chiswick player elected to charge in

shoulder first and there was only one winner. Tommy's jaw was not it. Gareth gave the ball to Will. Second half then saw a much improved performance, at a much higher intensity from the reds. Gareth gave the ball to Will. Haighy scored two dragflicks - "HARD AND LOW" - Adam Mulholland, 2014. Chiswick did not equalise; as previously mentioned, the thinnest of deflections had already been made by Eastcote. Despite a below par hockey performance from the lads, this was a really encouraging team performance, where we overcame a test with sheer determination and some luck. Gareth gave the ball to Will. MoM: Gareth - giving the ball to Will. DoD: Gareth - giving the ball to Will. Goals: Kev x2, Sam I

Past Masters v Wimbledon Supervets Saturday 22nd November Won 5(0) – 0(0)

. . . ‘a game of 2 halves’ Following last week’s rain effected game in Ipswich, the game this weekend was at Harefield but with leaden skies another soaking looked a distinct possibility. Some friendly ‘balancing’ was required at the start as Wimbledon were struggling for players this week and in addition to providing Joe G in goal we also loaned them 2 outfield players, this was much better than no fixture for all concerned. The opening 10 mins saw total PM domination with Lloydy down the left, Stevie down the right and Buddy & Dogra up the middle. We created lots of chances but with some injudicious finishing and great keeping from Joe we failed to break the deadlock. After this frenetic start Wimbledon worked out that both Pali and Sati were quality players and their central mid-fielder started to form a good partnership with Sati and they started to press the PMs – this was not in the script surely. Sukhi, Gavin and Pali (the military version) all had to be on their toes to stop Wimbledon ruining the party. Tim M and Graham now had to up their work rate to combat an increasingly confident Wimbledon team. Midway through the half we had our best move Tim to Graham, then a lovely pass to Dogra who slipped in Buddy only for him to be denied by their keeper again. It was only a matter of time before the PM’s scored and a couple of short corners came and went but with both the loaned Pali and Sati clearing shots off the line the game remained scoreless. Our next good opening came when Harry overlapped down the right and drilled a hard pass across the D to Steve, he proceeded to beat 2 defenders and then unleash his trademark backstick slapshot for the first goal, but wait there again was Joe G to deny us. Half time was approaching and we were still level, just enough time for a final short and (as the whistle had gone) everyone went up for it. In the ensuing melee we

Page 4: The Eastcote Hockey Club Newsletter Editor: Grahampile@aol · means their Champions league game is away this week and Southampton’s live TV game on Monday night may not be a key

The EastcoNet 4 29th November 2014

got off a good shot but not the rebound and the ball was cleared from the D for the end of the half. So at half time 0 – 0 and the PMs frustrated. At this stage the manager left the game, the pressure was just too much and with VJ back next week he was fearing the worst (or was it going to umpire the 4:30 game on the Eastro)! The half time talk was of playing the ball to red shirts with shorter sharper passing moves and moving the opposition around more. So the 2

nd half started largely as the first had ended, but

possibly the luck had changed. After about 2 mins we had another short this time which went to Buddy who had a good shot, again well stopped, but Lloydy followed up to open the scoring for our initial goal. Tim and Gavin pushed up another 10 yards this half and that gave us more passing options and kept the pressure on Wimbledon. Gavin found Graham down the left and he found Dogra on the top of the D (in enough space to safely receive the ball, but then again Dogra normally is) this time Dogra went on a mazey run into the D, he beat 2 defenders, drew the keeper who stopped his run abruptly(!), but not before he deftly offloaded the ball to Lloydy to score his 2

nd.

Having opened the flood gates traffic should all have been one way but Dave had to come to the rescue with a neat stick clearance after a long ball and quick break split the PM’s defence. This was probably the nearest Wimbledon had come to scoring in 50 mins of hockey and turned out to be their best chance. Within the next couple of minutes Steve shelled a ball across from the right and a marauding Harry showed Steve how to score with a slapshot, it went in off of the bar with the keeper not even having time to move. Lloydy then failed to secure his hat-trick before Buddy missed a great chance on the right hand post after being supplied by Dogra. On the next attack a similar move found Steve on the RH post and this time Dogra’s pass was comfortably converted for our 4

th goal and a score

line that now reflected the possession that we had enjoyed. By a quirk of coincidence we were awarded another short as the clock expired and again all of the PM’s went forward. The result was unlike that in the first half and, although the shot beat the keeper, it was stopped illegally by a foot on the line. For some reason Lloydy didn’t attempt to complete his hat-trick as Buddy snapped up the ball and buried it for his 1

st goal and the PM’s 5th.

Man of the match award is not an easy choice for this game as all PM players acquitted themselves well (all 14 of them) it could go to Graham or Tim for their excellent support play always pushing forward and probing or Steve and Harry for their constant threat down the right or Lloydy for his 2 goals, but this week it goes to Dogra for his control and vision – a class act. “Màlmand”

Old Boars v Old Kingstonian Men's Vets Saturday 22nd November Drew 3-3

Our Souls Examined I subscribe to a belief that there is an especial delight to be taken from the mediums of popular culture, in their many divergent guises, when its art transcends its origins. And so it was, that as the Old Boars rallied back from a devastating opening ten minutes in which they conspired to concede three times, that I was evoked to relive the emotion of the previous evening's spectacle. My current wife and I had been in attendance of those 'Madchester' forebears James; with their singular conglomeration of spiralling trumpets, hypnotic back beats and intimate profundity. Their tumultuous, encore-d finale was the crowd-pleasing anthem "Sometimes", and with the melodies still ringing in my ears I recalled Tim Booth's esoteric assertion as we faced near-inevitable defeat; "Sometimes, when I look in your eyes, I can see your soul." The three goal deficit provided me with an opportunity to observe our essence. Old Boar souls, or it may be more pleasing to say 'our souls', were relievedly unyielding. Kamran Akmal

Ladies 4s vs Chiswick 5’s Saturday 22nd December Won 2 - 0

More afternoon matches After a few late games recently this week’s early start was a bit of a shock to the system for the 4’s. The game began with a slow start however we eventually began to wake up, opened our eyes and started to link well as a team. Half an hour into the first half we came close to scoring with Lesley bravely attempting to wrestle the ball from the goalie. This spurted the team into action and shortly after, Georgie on a break dragged the keeper to the right and slotted the ball into the left scoring our first goal to make it 1-0. We kept the pressure on in the second half keeping the majority of the possession. Our defence performed solidly throughout the game with Lynne and Sharon delivering important well timed tackles. Charlotte and Hannah countered any attacks with some cracking well placed hits keeping the ball well into the Chiswick half. The second goal came from some well worked passing between the midfield and forwards. Cerys and Nic worked well together on the right crossing the ball into the d and Laura converted it to make it 2-0. Dick of the day was awarded to Cerys for confusing her match fees with a label. As a result placing it into a J20 bottle and then spending the rest of teas attempting to get it out with a pen! Another brilliant performance by the team. Ten games into the season and still unbeaten let’s keep it up 4’s!! Ash

Men’s 3’s v Amersham & Chalfont 2’s Saturday 22nd November Won 5 – 0

Architects of Success Normally a game against bottom of the league would be a welcome relief for the team cruising at the top. However for this game Lewis was missing a total of six players, through unavailability, injury and illness. As a result it was again a makeshift side the 3's put out. Lewis also focussed the team talk on taking nothing for granted. A&M had drawn with Wycombe and so on their day could cause a depleted 3's side an upset. The 3's had been playing well, keep the passing game going and we would see out this tricky game. Jeff then decided to add that we could throw away the league if we didn't win this one. With that ringing in their ears the 3's went out. Early on the 3's were clearly more dangerous. The majority of play took place in the A&M half, and the 3's played some great forward play, and Joe was causing a

lot of trouble for their backline. The 3's defence were finding plenty of space and were able to switch the play in support of the attack. A couple of early chances came and went. It took a little luck as an attack down the left got put into Dan who passed back to the top of the D where Joe's shot took a deflection on its way past the keeper. 1-0. Amersham came back and won a couple of shorts, but the defence moped up. Working back in the opposite direction the 3's showed so patient play which ended with the ball being played to Speedy, just outside the 25, he fired in a perfect ball and Dan nipped in-front of his marker and deflected the ball in. 2-0. Kushal went close with a couple of deflections as did Lewis with 2 reverse stick shots. Scott fired just over from a short, however it was a goal-line scramble where Dan managed to dig the ball out and slot past the keeper that put our minds at rest. 3-0. Halftime Lewis congratulated the team on a job well done. Keep up the intensity and see that game out. Despite this the 3's were a little wasteful in attack. A little complacency setting in from a comfortable lead, but Amersham were not out of the game and were still able to hit on the break. In the end the captain lead by example, intercepting on the 25 after a good press from Eastcote. A 1-2 with Joe cut through the defence and Lewis fired over the keepers shoulder and into the top corner. 4-0. The complacency continued somewhat and despite some great passes from Jimmy and Nick the chances came and went. Amersham then proved that they wouldn't meekly submit and broke away where a stick tackle from Jeff resulted in a flick. Unfortunately for Amersham, Mr Petit was in no mood to let his clean sheet slip and expertly batted it away. A great goal was nearly scored when Craig took the ball (almost off Jimmy's stick as he was going to shoot) and then reverse chipped the ball to the back post, where Kushal almost put it in as he jumped to reach it. Instead it was scored it much less spectacular fashion. Dan and the keeper getting the ball stuck between them before he squared to Kushal who slotted home into an empty goal. 5-0. So a very good result all things considered. This made it consecutive clean sheets, 5 wins in a row, remaining top of the league and the 3's have doubled their goal difference in the last 2 games. Man of the match? plenty of contenders. Jimmy for playing from his sickbed, good performance at LB by Dave Crowe, Joe Forster tying them in knots and getting the opener and assisting the 4th, another workman-like effort form Lewis in centre mid and a great goal. Geoff saved the flick but this week it goes to Dan. 2 goals and 2 assists. Poacher’s finishes and good work in the D, taking his tally to 5 this season and top of the 3's scorers. Dick of the Day? again many contenders. Craig for losing his wing mirror, Jeff's somewhat depressing team talk addition, however it goes to James this week. He forgot to bring a white shirt to the away game. However what makes this worse is that 10 days earlier, we'd played the same opposition in a friendly, at the same pitch and he'd forgotten a white shirt then!

Ladies 5's v Staines. Saturday 22nd November Lost 0 – 1

Great Effort Well done to everybody who played, and thanks for all the others for helping out. Everyone played brilliantly, improving our performance from last week. There was brilliant play from our attack (and some great runs by Rosalind) Also some amazing saves by our defence. Let's hope we can keep it up when we play the 4's next week! Congrats on a great match at the weekend. A 1-0 defeat against the team sitting 2nd in the league is a really good result! Everyone played superb as seen during the MOM nominations - well done to Rosalind and Megan joint winners of MOM.

Ladies 3’s vs Teddington Saturday 22nd November Won 6 – 2

Early Start! It was a very early start for the three’s with a 10 o’clock push back and 9 o’clock meet at Teddington which we weren’t fond of. This was obvious in the first few minutes of the match as Teddington won a quick, early goal. However, after this we woke up, winning our first short corner of the match. It was third time lucky and three shorts in quick succession as Lucy Carter slapped the ball from the top of the D to Andrea on post who scored. This gave us a burst of energy and soon after the first, our second goal was scored by skilful passing between Lucy Carter to Anna and finally to Lucy Lavers ending the first half on 2-1 to Eastcote. We started strong in the second half with Steph making a great run straight to the D from the half way line winning a short corner. Lucy carter received the ball at the top of the D slipping it to Anna who passed it to Fabi on post who put it in the back of the goal (it’s almost like we’d practiced them!). Lucy Lavers scored again and Anna also got another goal meaning Eastcote were 6-1 up! The defence stayed strong throughout the game with Penrose, Andrea and Natalie making some great tackles. Unfortunately a determined Teddington got a second goal past Sinead, despite Penrose’s efforts to keep it out...let’s just say she thought the back board looked comfortable! “I just wanted to lay down!” The score at the final whistle was 6-2 to Eastcote! MoM nominations were widely spread this week but in the end, Susie got the final vote. DoD went to Penrose for her time spent on the floor!

Ladies 2’s V Hendon and Mill Hill 1’s Saturday 22nd November Lost 0 - 1

Close The Ladies 2’s gave away some costly points this week when they went down, frustratingly, by just the single goal to Hendon and Mill Hill. On paper it was points we could easily have taken and desperately needed to claim, to stay out of the relegation zone going into the Christmas break. The result was particularly frustrating considering the dominance we showed in possession and how well we covered defensively. We welcomed back Wicksy, who bossed in the right back position. Linking up beautifully with Alessia who was moved into the right midfield and who was relentless in the attacks on the Hendon left flank. Hendon managed to get their goal on a break, following a defensive error which left the circle overloaded. Their experienced forward line was then efficient in the dispatch of the goal. A shame as this break had been entirely against the run of play. Unfortunately close to half-time we lost our work-horse when Jen got a stick to the side of the head. Her second visit to A&E in a week with hockey related injuries. The second half was basically a replay of the Harrow match when the goal developed a force-field which denied all shots. Many short corners were given but we just couldn’t convert. We need to up our game this week against Hampstead and Westminster 4’s who sit 4

th in the table.

Man of the Match – shared between Wicksy and Jackie DOD – Mo for getting the MOM wrong last week. Sorry Maaike!

Men’s 5s V South Bucks 1 Saturday 22nd November Lost 2 - 4

Fight Back 10 minutes in and there was every indication that this wasn’t going to be our day! We were down 0-3 and we hadn’t really done too much wrong. The clue was in first goal that came back off the post onto the back of a foot and rebounded into the goal. Then another going under Dave the keeper’s feet, to be stopped on the line but then in some weird contortion get dragged back into the goal. Oh, and then the shot put wide of the keeper but straight at Maarten, who I would have happily bet £50 on clearing – except for that small hole in his stick that the ball went through!!!

Clearly though, we had allowed them the chances to shoot so all was not well. We had spent some time talking tactics at the start to counteract the very high play that they employ on the beach that is their home ground. Defending narrow and Ball and Help side cover taken on board. A stiff talk at half time about winning the 50/50s saw us come out and play much more competitively...and basically draw the majority of the match 1-1. Our goal was a classic fast passing move through our Colts that saw the ball go around the right and in by Tim; sorry, “the goal-scoring phenomenon that is...” Tim. With quite a few injuries, culminated in Maarten hitting the ground hard after a flying attempt at driving the ball into the goal (destined to be the goal of the game), the boys adapted well to playing a variety of different positions. So 2-4, disappointing BUT; we lost 1-7 to their 2s this time last year and played like donkeys so lots to be proud of.

Eastcote 4’s v OMT 3’s Saturday 22nd November Won – 8-0

Tora, Tora Tora!!! Attack, Attack, Attack!!!

The captaincy is handed to Raj who consulted his twin Ravi, the ex-Kenyan international the day before about team formation, tactics and tips on how to overcome our local rivals. Whatever was talked about over a few whiskies the night before certainly worked. Raj’s team talk was short, absorbing and direct - keep possession and attack! Jat looking slimmer, fitter and sharper scores with an instinctive shot from the top of the D, and that’s within 90 secs of the push back. Eastcote start to relax a bit too much with OMT almost equalising within a few minutes of us taking the lead with Dan making a fine save. Eastcote start to dominate the game with a more fluid game, and soon go 2 up. Half time and Raj decides to change the formation with Jas moving to right midfield. Time for some lighting strikes and incisive passing to open up OMT’s defence. The change in tactics work. Within 1 min of the second half Eastcote score. 3-0. No time for complacency, and Raj makes a key tactical change and puts Paul Lotta at right back, and Ninja at centre forward. Paul Lotta was given the Beano 2015 manual to read which he shared and flicked (excuse the pun!!) through with Dan in goal! No much going on at the back as OMT’s hardly ventured into Eastcote’s half. A lot more running from Paul, Andrew and Conor kept the work rate and pressure on the opposition. Gurdeep was quiet up to now but then decided to go on a solo run, beats 3 OMT players, and is now facing Reg who he skips around as if he wasn’t there. A real Sugar Ray shuffle, and puts the ball at back of the net! Great goal! Goal scorers were Jat (3), Jas (2), Paul (2), and Gurdeep (1)

The touchline support was more subdued this week, possibly due to the warning from the previous week being heeded by all the spectators including Dan’s dad! The team would like to thank the umpires, Harry and our beloved Chairman, Rob for controlling the game, spotting the ‘well disguised’ fouls and keeping the game flowing.

U12 Boys victorious in two-part Tournament Whilst the rain fell continuously on Brunel, the Under 12 boys pieced together another full set of wins over their rivals in the second round of their two part tournament. Starting with a match against a strong Amersham C team, they chalked up a 5-0 win. This was followed by their hardest match against St Albans. The opposition took the lead in the first half but our boys fought back and were victorious with a well-earned 2-1 win. This week we saw their team-play develop even further and their confidence in pressing the opposition and working the ball between them was great. One move typified this. Alex played Leo in on the left. He tried to move forward but saw the way blocked so turned back to Auke. Auke returned the ball immediately and the gap had now opened ahead for Leo to play it into Ollie who took it on to score. “First pass is the best pass”, “Go back as well as forward”, “Return the pass”....oh the coach could see all those tactics in one move! Fantastic! Our final game, couldn’t come soon enough as the kids began to feel the effects of wet-rot after well over an hour in torrential rain. We took on Amersham D who we had beaten convincingly in the first round. The boys worked hard and were soon ahead. Despite a goal from a short by Amersham they kept up the pressure and came away very convincing winners with a 7-1. It was a great performance by all the boys. The 10 man squad was Thomas in goal, Alex J, Auke, Giles, Leo, Ollie L, Paras, Ollie W, Maccon and Alex B. With 6 wins from 6, they are crowned winners of Session 2.

From the Colts Captain

It’s the Colts Christmas party soon!

The Christmas party is one of the best kids party’s around. It is being held on Sunday 14th December and tickets are on sale now. As a big kid myself I remember going to lots of them and they are pretty special. Father Christmas is making an appearance and a DJ is in charge of the sounds!

If you are a parent of an older colt, please get them to come along too after training (don’t worry we won’t embarrass you). Part of why Eastcote Colts are so good is because of big events like this and everyone can be part of the club. The bar should be buzzing and parents can enjoy themselves too.

If you are in any doubt about going, just do it, buy a ticket (it isn’t very much) and enjoy a great afternoon with your team mates. Josh Copley (Colts Captain)
