Tony Antony It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Tony Antony. Tony played for Eastcote for about 20 years in the 1970s and 1980s after a long stint with the Met Police. He was an integral member of the infamous 3A's forming a full back combination with Ken Drane for about 10 years. I also had the pleasure of playing with him for the Wayfarers a London based Summer, Sundays and Touring side. Tony was from the hard school of hockey and his play and style reflected many years in the Met Police. You never wanted to go through Tony without taking a hard hit! Off the pitch he was the perfect gentleman and always liked everything done the right way. I recall one game we were playing when Tony and Ken were in partnership at the back and one of the opposition shouting the two full backs must be over 120 years old between them and for his forwards to go round them not through them.. Tony quipped back quickly to say that was a slur and out of order as the combined age was 129 !! . One season in the early 80s I recall saw the 3as concede just 19 goals all season in over 20 games. This was before league hockey but as we used to say the 3as never played friendlies.. Our sympathies go to Merle and his children one of whom Michael was a key player for the 1

st team in the 1970s.

Lost Property There is a large amount of unclaimed lost property left on the pitch or in the clubhouse. It will be disposed of after Xmas if not claimed. There is a lot of colt's stuff especially coats

Selected for England Congratulations to Lenny Conetta, Ladies 2's, who has been recently been selected in the England Over 50s Squad.

Chair Chat The last full league programme before the Christmas break saw the Menes 1sts beat leaders Maidenhead and as I was contemplating us leading the table at the break news came in of Oxford hawks demolition of PHC Chiswick meaning we are 2

nd on goal difference. There are just 1 point

between the top 4 and only 4 points for the top 6! Wins just for the 4ths and 6ths elsewhere. The Ladies had a disappointing 1

st team result – they competed well apart

from 10 minutes when they conceded 4.the 2s had another good win and are 3

rd and the 3rds power on at the top and

are now 7 points clear of 3rd

place. I great win for the ladies masters on Sunday too. This week my team of the week is the Menes 1sts. Well done to Lee, Brooksy and the team. The matter of Safeguarding in sport has been in the headlines for the last week or so. EHC takes this matter very seriously and we ensure we meet all the requirements of England Hockey and Clubs First – Eastcote are a Club are a Sports Mark accredited club. If anyone has any concerns or questions please feel free to speak to myself or anyone from the management committee. Our Safeguarding and Protecting Young Peoples and our Drink & drugs policies are found on the website under - The Club/Club Policies. Our colt's coaches and team captains and umpires who have U18s in their team have regular DBS checks as laid out by England Hockey. That’s to Craig and Andrea for last week's Christmas social. This week we have the Diamond Jubilee dinner dance and I look forward to seeing many old faces there for a great night organised by Des. The Saints are struggling to score many goals this season but have gathered 4 points in two games despite glaring misses from Jay Rodrigues. That reminds me a bit of Lloydy in front of goal. Finally can I wish you and all your families a very happy Christmas and healthy and prosperous 2017.

Match Reports

Ladies 1's v Wycombe Rye 1's Saturday 10th December Lost 1 - 4

Lost in the fog We played High Wycombe away last weekend hoping to finish for Christmas with a win and continue our recent winning streak. We got off to a promising start despite the fog and youthful opposition who were very ‘pumped’ and energetic from their pre match musical ritual. Against the run of play we closed the first half with the game remaining goalless. Yet, as the rain started to pour our play became slightly frantic, resulting in us conceding 4 goals in the space of 10 woeful minutes, with one goal involving a spectacular dive from the opposition and another somehow leaving Eye on the floor inside the goal… The remainder of the game however was goalless despite a couple of penalty corners and chances created in the D. Post match, things went from bad to worse when the opposition drank all the tea and left us tealess! Also the food wasn’t much better with once again, sandwiches and poor cakes, falling well short of the Thai food at Hampstead and Westminster, Pookey, Neets and the punks had the pleasure of enjoying. Sensing the culinary disappointment Chunky, in a moment of coaching genius suggested, for the second time running, a team trip to McDonalds. Being the last match before Christmas there was much competition for MOM and DOD as they would ‘win’ Chunky’s ‘special’ prizes. Unfortunately although I am the proud winner of DOD this week I was unable to receive Chunky’s slightly inappropriate ‘turkey’ due to what I think is child safeguarding purposes. But instead Pookey accepted the prize on my behalf thanks Pookey and enjoy! Despite the loss we are going into the next half of the season with high spirits, particularly as Macca promised we could play Chunky’s recently purchased drinking game with milkshake and coke! MOM- Beth for great play and constantly hassling the opposition DOD- Philly for once getting kicked out of M&S for trying on Granny’s nighties (oh and getting kicked out of McDonalds for being rowdy) Merry Christmas!

Ladies 3's v OMT Duchesses Saturday 10th December Won 7 - 3

Christmas Topping Going into our final match before Christmas, we had a lot to play for! Not only were we determined to stay at the top, bakes had also promised that the first round was on him if we stayed at the top going into the Christmas break! We knew it wasn't going to be an easy match but we were determined to go out hard. Some great play from the midfield led to our first goal. Unfortunately, OMT managed to claw 1 back! This made us fight back even harder! Maybe a bit too hard. (Resulted in a chipped tooth...always wear a

gum shield kids) silly me! 2 more goals for us and bukes being taken off through injury, we went into half time 3-2 up. Team talk over, we bounced back to our usual form. Great defensive play left OMT struggling to find the back board. A short corner awarded, they managed to level the scoring. This didn't stop us. We fought back hard and the goals kept coming for us! 4 more to be precise! Final score 7-3. Steph with her first goal of the season! Yes maclannnnaaannanananan! Andrea back on form with a goal. Go delphy! And Alice on fire with 5 goals! This got her MoM! No guessing who DoD went to this week! Haha! Merry Christmas from the Ladies 3s! Lucy

Sunday 11th December Women O40s vs Reading O40s Won 4 - 1 Sat Nav issues and M25 accidents meant that we reached our full complement of 10 women 10 minutes after the published pushback time. No warm up for 3 of our players, a minute's silence for Reading's long-standing chairman Keith Hunt who sadly passed away yesterday, and we were off. We started very strongly and had Reading on the back foot from the beginning. We used the extra space available to us very well, and did that thing that coaches are always telling players to do: use the ball! Fantastic passing hockey throughout the team meant that we could get around their superior numbers and move the ball into the danger area without too much effort. Detail on individual goals is sketchy but I can tell you that Lenny scored our first goal fairly early on. Janet scored our second. Reading got one back, and then Janet helped herself to 2 more during the second half. (Did I mention that we only had 10 players? ;-)

The win takes us to the top of the South Women's Masters League on goal difference. Next game is at home on Sunday 8th January against South Berkshire. The dream team: Nikki Redding (GK - Chiswick), Julie Wilson, Irene Hall, Charmaine Woodley, Tonia Gann, Clare Ormerod (Chiswick), Lenny Conetta, Sharon Hall, Lesley Lavers and Janet Morris. Past Masters v Dulwich and Tulse Hill Saturday 10th December Lost 0(0) - 1(0)

. . . home advantage? We had an even matchup today despite having 2 fewer players in the squad. We welcomed Dulwich and Tulse Hill to the Eastro for what is traditionally a very hard fought contest, would today be any different? We started with Gavin and Vijay at the back following their solid performance last week with Pali reverting to his favourite left defensive role and Ian slotting in on the right, thus the shape was well rehearsed and compact and gave the marauding visitors no clear space in behind whilst providing a solid platform for Sukhi, “L” and Graham to control the midfield, up front Addy slotted in for the injured Lloydy and Dogra and Buddy filled the other slots. Early exchanges were pretty even suggesting this was going to be a very open game. For the second week running “L” was lined up against a young competitive ‘new-comer’ so he was in for a hard afternoon’s work, but something that he never shies away from and always has at least 50% of the balance. Ian and Graham were solid on the right and were releasing Buddy down the right wing slot – Buddy was however being tightly marked, much to his chagrin and after one combatitive exchange was requested to sit out for the next 10 mins. The game was pretty even so the extra man gave the visitor’s the edge and they had a period of pressure, with a number of shorts and attacks from open play, but these were all repulsed by the strong back four and some good keeping from Dave in the PM goal, including a couple of one on one saves. The visitors did manage to scramble the ball across the line but a goal was ruled out for a foul on the sweeper in the build-up. We pushed forward on the break with Ian and Graham probing down the right and when Dogra was fouled in possession and questioned the decision 10 mins before half time we went down to 10 men again. Despite persistent pressure the defence held firm and we went into halftime level at 0 -0. The 2

nd half saw Sarosh come on in the middle and give “L”

extra support – we now had more possession and some good chances but couldn’t find the opener despite a series of shorts, this week our normally reliable 14b routine failed us. Meanwhile at the other end Pali and Gavin were kept very busy down our left and the visitors kept Graham concentrating more on defence such was the persistence of their attack. Both sides had a number of short corners but couldn’t breach well organised defences. The game was now building up to a finely balanced 4

th quarter when we

suffered our 3rd

10 man period of the day after a mistimed

tackle on top of the D. We were now under a bit of pressure which reduced our possession in their half but with Sukhi, “L” Sarosh and Graham all having lots of energy we did create a number of half chances in their D but never a really clean opening. With 15 mins to go the visitors made their numerical superiority count and scored with a fierce shot through a number of bodies which rifled just inside the post. Despite going back up to 11 players and creating pressure we failed to pull the goal back and came out narrowly losing by the odd goal in a very competitive, open and enjoyable game. All 12 contributed to a very tough game which was hard fought and not without incident but MotM this week goes to Dave in the PM goal. “Màlmand”

Eagles v Banbury 4 plus 1s Saturday 10th December Lost 0 - 5

Crossed Eagles The diminutive poem “Ride a cock Horse to Banbury Cross” has been analysed for centuries and many interpretations exist. A Tudor report of Bessy’s visit? A 19

th Century ode to

Kat Banbury? We will never know for sure, but the ambiguity attached to North Oxfordshire’s largest town beginning with a B lives on. It may be endemic. Here follows an analysis: Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross This clearly refers to the Ferrari marque and we were therefore greatly looking forward to being transported to the match by our northern chum T. W. Inkletoes. Alas, it appears he has fallen foul of Match Reportitus, that curious disease that leads to the author of the most recent report being unavailable for the following match. We still await the chance to congratulate our Scottish scribe for his ode t’Dale. Anyway, providing a 160 mile shuttle bus in what were clearly apocalyptic weather conditions meant that we could not live up to the opening line of the poem and we slunk in to Banbs in a variety of mid and low range bangers. To see a fine lady upon a white horse We weren’t. With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes Well, she wasn’t there so we cannot confirm or deny said accoutrements. She shall have music wherever she goes. Well. It rather does depend on how one defines music of course, but I can report that several Eagles sang: Dept’y Chair opened both pipes at half time in a rare, but welcomed umpirical aria; Where’s Wally found himself and chuntered for at least 30 minutes in what I think is called a round; Sati adopted a lyrical gangster pose which he rarely strayed from, and Dickie threw his instrument away and walked off. Clearly a shan’ty. We salute hymn. So there we are. We basically drove across the channel for a match with four ringers in it, three subs, and an umpire who declared that it had all been agreed by the league. What tosh. Hotshot Richard Mattick is scouring the MBBO regs to reverse the result. Or he’d better be.

Eastcote 1 – Maidenhead 1 (3-1) It's All Greek To Me

MOM : Andy/Joe DOD : Stan

Eastcote 1 – Maidenhead 1 (3-1) Saturday 10 of December was marked as THE big game of this first half of the season. After 10 games, Maidenhead were leading the league, with Eastcote only a win behind. Due to a better Goal difference, a win would see Eastcote top of the league for Xmas. Cloudy sky, wet and slippery pitch was a perfect setup for that must win game. Long team talk and warm up for both teams. Let the game begin! Pushback for Eastcote, after a couple of passes and 15 seconds on the clock, Eastcote were awarded a first short corner. Perfect start. Jimmy injects, Mark pushes and…. Strike! Unbelievable headshot from Mark on their second runner. Its hockey Mark, not skeet… opponent K.O., unfortunately for him he won’t carry on. First half was very intense with lots of good moves from both teams, great attacking and defensive plays from both sides. After a ball in the Maidenhead D, Joe deflected the ball, beat the Goalie because the bounce went over the keeper’s foot as he tried to clear it, Eastcote 1 Maidenhead 0. Maidenhead decided then to put more pressure on our defence to get an equaliser. After few occasions from both teams, Maidenhead got a counter attack, the ball ending at the end of their centre forward and after a quick turn and a rocket shot, Sprakey could only turn his head to see the ball in the net. Half time Eastcote 1, Maidenhead 1. Second half restarted with a lot of pressure from both teams, but Eastcote started much the stronger, but due to a lack of composure in front of goal, the score line remained 1-1. After a few short corners in a row for Eastcote, the famous “back to the injector” seemed to be the key. Joe was once again on the score sheet, putting home the rebound off the keeper, Eastcote once again in the lead. More and more pressure was applied by Maidenhead on our defence, trying to find for the second time an equaliser in this game. On a turnover, Brooksy ended up with the ball in our 25, drived it all the way to Maidenhead’s D, pass the goalie and… the angle was tight and he could only hit the post, but luckily Gabs was behind to push the ball in the back of the net. The rest isn’t really interesting, we went there to win, we came back with a 3-1 win. What else? Oh yeah, Oxford Hawks won 10-0, placing them at the top of the league due to a better goal difference. MOM : Andy/Joe tied DOD : Stan

As manager of the England over 65’s who have just won European Gold at Southgate let me share with you one of our secrets, that could benefit all of us who play or have played sport. It would in fact benefit anyone with issues around back pain, arthritis, and/or lack of energy.

We have been supported by “Xenca“ for the past 4 years who have recommended two products to us and which the majority of the squads are using. I swear by them. The first is Collagen and the second Five a day + V. Both are natural products. If you have a club member in the squad talk to them about it. If interested to research or buy to try, go to www.xencahockey.com Peter Crayford England GGM Manager

Lost Property There is a large amount of unclaimed lost property left on the pitch or in the clubhouse. It will be disposed of after Xmas if not claimed There is a lot of colts stuff especially coats

U14G 6 West Herts U14G 0 The U14Gs have had two games so far with some good performances but had narrow losses. Against West Herts they really clicked as a team and showed the supporters on the side some excellent team play in attack and defence with the girls using the width of the pitch with some nice passing interchanges. Playing the game in 4 quarters the girls dominated each of the 15 minutes scoring goals in each quarter. Goal scorers: Matilde (getting 2 on her debut), Catriona x 2, Lucy & Natasha Just as pleasing was the work rate the girls put in to defend as a team as it was not one way traffic. Shauna made some great saves to keep a clean sheet. Team: Shauna Clifford GK, Tess Copley, Catriona Edwards, Hannah Ghosh, Natasha Jones, Kara Mandair, Matilde Moscoso, Mia Patani, Sophie Taylor, Lucy Thirkettle, Alex Paraskeva, Bella Paraskeva.

Eastcote U16 Boys v St Albans St Albans 1 Eastcote 1 Eastcote were held to a draw by a well-disciplined St Albans side on Sunday. The boys were soon 1-0 up thanks to a slick finish by MoM Tomilade, following good work down the right hand side. A somewhat fortuitous goal levelled the game after 20 minutes. Eastcote rallied with a handful of short corners but could not convert. The second half saw Eastcote dominate possession again with St Albans best threats coming from counter attacks. Some good scoring chances were created by Eastcote, but it was just one of those days where our shots did not find the back of the net. A fine sliding save by Michael – taking out one of their players, and two of his own – avoided an unjust defeat late in the game. Well done to the defence who weren’t busy but kept their concentration and shape – in particular the ever improving Harry Woodland. Thanks also to his brother Giles who stepped up from U14 at the last moment and looked every bit the part. Squad : Michael, Harry, Alex, Giles, Kobi, Zak, Chris, Tom, Tomilade, Ollie and Luke Next game 8

U12 Girls 2016 review Josie and I have taken on the U 12 girls this year, and to date it has been a very successful one in that regard. We have so far had 3 mini festivals against a variety of clubs from surrey and Middlesex. The girls have developed in to a formidable force and are yet to be defeated, which is a great achievement. They have taken everything in their stride and have shown a great appetite to improve and be the best. Hopefully 2017 will be just as fruitful and we can complete a perfect season leaving Josie and I very satisfied in what can be accomplished with hard work, determination and lots of fun along the way. Here’s to 2017 Luke & Josie
