Ladies 1st Team Coach We would like to announce formally a change to the Ladies 1st team Coaching with Timur Asar stepping down at the end of October due to family commitments and we would like to thank him for his efforts in pre-season and the start of the league programme. Moving forwards we are delighted to announce that Alfie Connetta will lead the Ladies 1st team coaching for the foreseeable future. Alfie played 1st team hockey and has coached both in the Army and Newbury Ladies 1st team and he is looking forward

to the challenge for the season ahead.

Director of Coaching Adam Mulholland is planning to present monthly to Eastcote Coaches and interested players who want to learn a little bit more about the tactical elements and how to coach them. The first presentation will be on Monday 24th November at 7.30pm in the Club.

Congratulation to Mark Fitzgerald and his wife Lucy.

Mark and Lucy got married last Saturday at St Lawrence Church, Chicheley near Newport Pagnel and had the reception at Chicheley Hall afterwards. Their two young children Molly and Jack were part of the flower girls and page boys supporting team. There were lots of Eastcote friends in attendance to hear Mark's speech and poem and to see the Strictly Come Dancing training the couple had secretly taken for their reception dance.

Chair Chat As I was enjoying a day at Twickenham on Saturday I was following some great results and performances coming in on emails, texts and the internet although later in the day I found it more difficult to focus on the phone screen! My wife wonders why if the game lasts 80 minutes I left the house at 11 not returning until midnight – there was a lot of key issues to debate and talk about after the game of course.

Back to hockey – solid win for the men’s 1st with Chunky

sounding more like Jose Mourinho with comments the opposition are parking the bus when they come here. No defeats anywhere and the 2 drawn games saw us conceded 2-0 and 4-1 leads with 2s and 6s. The Ladies 1sts had a great performance although they still came away from Surbiton empty handed and the 3rds and 4ths remain in promotion contention with wins. My team of the week is the Men’s 3s who beat previously unbeaten West London in a top of the table clash. Lewis you have drink waiting for you. On Sunday the Past Masters went out of the Cup but will go into the Trophy.

With Mark Fitzgerald’s wedding taking out half the colts coaches on Sunday I was brought out of retirement with the U10s & was really impressed with the improvements we have made this year in our coaching structure – great work from Chunky and all the colts coaches.

Plenty of Sunday action this week with the Men’s 1sts, Ladies Masters and Men’s Grand Masters all in Cup action with the Mixed playing a friendly and the Colts section having 2 league games for the U14s & 16s Boys and the U8s in a tournament. That should keep players, coaches and umpires busy! If you are not involved why not go and support one of the teams – venues and times in the newsletter.

Match Reports

Men’s 1’s v Sonning 1’s Saturday 8th November Won 3 – 0

Back on track.... After a disappointing few weeks in the league, with only 5 points from 4 games and a loss to Oxford last week, a good result was the order of the day last Saturday. A change to the team talk saw us relying on the power of the mind to prepare for the game, though Chunky was forced to revise his description of a "happy place"....let's stick with the beach, yeah probably best. It seemed to work, as we started strongly, having circa 95% possession and territory in the opening exchanges. Turns out this was going to be the pattern for the whole game though. Sonning either weren't too interested in trying to attack, deploying a Mourinho inspired 8-1-1 formation most of the time. When the ball did find it's way forward, Will and Archibald were unfailingly on hand to step in front and deny their forwards a touch, causing their strikers to get gradually more frustrated. Sadly, all the pressure we exerted didn't translate into goals, with a huge number of good chances being missed in the first half. 0-0 at the break. It was a relief to see no panic at half time; in previous weeks we had found ourselves disconcerted by not racing ahead in games but this time we stayed calm and continued to play the same way. The inevitable breakthrough came as a pass found it's way to Thorpey on the p-spot who, after hitting the ball at the keeper, finished off the rebound. This was quickly followed by further pressure, and another rebounding shot from Thorpey dropping loose to Haighy who pounced on his reverse stick for 2-0. The final goal came as Kev again found his way along the baseline and tried to pass to Coops on the back post, but the Sonning defender couldn't quite face giving Coops a tap in decided to put it in the goal himself and double Kevin's tally instead. Despite continuing to dominate, Eastcote didn't score another, though good defence and a couple of saves from Sprakey meant the clean sheet was never really under threat. Overall a solid performance, and we will want a repeat against Marlow next weekend.

Ladies 1’s v Surbiton 2’s Saturday 8th November Lost 1 - 2

New Broom Last weekend the Ladies 1s brought the game to the top team of the league, Surbiton. With a new coach and a rather questionable new corner drill the whole team was apprehensive about the result. An early goal from Surbiton didn't dishearten us as soon Whippet was able to get a beautiful deflection of a cracking cross from Macca. Whippet later admitted she had her eyes closed the whole time.

The performance given by the girls at the weekend was the best all season and the final result proved it. We managed to hold the score at 1-1 for a long time and, through an unfortunate yet unbelievable goal from the oppo, we lost that draw. However, the team performance against this extremely well drilled team was amazing and we are now looking forward to our upcoming games. Man of the match was Lenny for tenacity and amazing effort. Dick of the day was Lucy again for her knife/lighter issues.

Past Masters v Tring Supervets Saturday 8th November Won 5(2) – 1(1)

. . . A relatively easy canter The PMs played on the late slot at the Eastro and a real pleasure it turned out to be – flood lights on and driving rain, a great aperitif before early dinner. Having a cup game the next day we had a full squad out and made relatively easy work of a Tring side compromised by a missing player and an injury after 20 minutes. The opening spell saw the PM’s having lots of possession and making plenty of opportunities for all 3 forwards but some good goal keeping, a post and some less than decisive finishing meant that the match was still goalless after 20 minutes. The deadlock was finally broken when after some good work down the right by Ian and Sati the ball found Steve in the box with space beyond the keeper to slap in one of his trademark reverse stick shots. Tring were under severe pressure so had to rely on long balls and a couple of mobile forwards to mount anything like an attack on the PM defence, but their efforts were rewarded with a couple of short corners which were comfortably dealt with by Tim, Sukhi, Gavin and Pali. The pattern of play was now well established and the introduction of Dogra added a little bit of extra class in the midfield with his deft and assured play. Buddy and Lloydy both went close and hit the post before a neat pass from Sati found Buddy in space in the D, his fierce shot was parried by the keeper only for Steve to take advantage and double his and the PM’s score, with 10 mins still to go in the half. It was surely only a matter of time before we added another goal but chances came and went before some indecision in the PMs defence turned over the ball in the D and the resultant cross was stroked in for a surprising Tring repost right on the stroke of half time. The second half was played in almost continuous rain, but with more urgency by the PMs – it was clear that their keeper was in form and that they were deploying what seemed like a 7 man defence inside their D – so space was not readily available. At half time we discussed the obvious solution – put the ball onto a foot and get short corners.


Within 5 mins of the opening Harry did just that. Buddy injected to Jacko and with an emphatic strike and a resounding thud off the backboard we had increased our lead to 3 – 1. 5 mins later it was Dogra to be on the ball when we were awarded another short. This time it was Buddy to Jacko, then a slip to his right for Sati to score another. At this stage the flood gates should have opened but the PMs made hard work of it and hit the post again, missed 2 or 3 relatively easy chances before scoring a 3

rd goal from a

short corner, this time the initial shot was saved by their keeper the ball was moved to Lloydy (to the left of the goal) and he beat the 2 defenders and recovering keeper with consummate skill. With 20 mins left the PMs had an opportunity to increase their goal difference as they had 80% of the possession but some good keeping and lack lustre finishing saw the final result end up as PM’s 5 to Tring 1. Man of the match award is not an easy choice this week as in all honesty we made hard work of what should have been a more emphatic win, however for his class, vision and composure on the ball it goes to Dogra. “Màlmand”

NOW Pensions Men’s Masters O50s Vintage Cup 1st Round Past Masters v Richmond Sunday 9th November Lost 0(0) – 3(1)

. . . Closer than the score-line suggested and a sub-plot

Following yesterday’s soaking the weather couldn’t have been a greater contrast on Sunday, blue skies, no wind and balmy temperature. This was always going to be a tough fixture with both sides fielding strong teams and due to fixture congestion was to be played at Old Cranleighans. This was our first challenge as we had to play the initial 20 minutes with 10 men – several of our team went to Richmond’s home ground! The opening exchanges were a bit cat and mouse as both sides looked to find the opponents weaknesses. We had a couple of good attacks with Steve’s and Harry’s pace creating some problems for Richmond but failed to get a real sniff at goal. At the other end we conceded a number of short corners as we came under pressure. The first 4 were dealt with relatively easily with no great dramas as Sarosh and Tim performed their defensive duties faultlessly. We went up to 11 players around the middle of the half and then conceded another short corner – this time a mis-hit shot squirmed under the keeper and the Richmond players were first to react and scored with a relatively soft shot which on most days would have been rebuffed on the line.

Now up to a full complement we started to have more of the possession and some excellent work by Selwyn, Jacko and Sarosh in the middle managed to move us up the park and start to regularly penetrate their D, but whilst we troubled their keeper on several occasions we were denied the space to get into a truly decisive shooting positions. On the stroke of half time we got our first short corner and although well struck by Jacko we were destined not to draw level before HT. As mentioned we now had a full squad available and so would be able to press forward more in the second half. The first half of the game had moments where the interpretation of the rules was not universally agreed upon by all involved, but this was to be eclipsed by events of the 2

nd half.

We started brightly with more resilience in the middle as Pellie made his presence felt and this freed up Selwyn to give more support to Stevie and Lloydy on the right and Jacko to drift left and link with Harry. 10 mins into the half and Richmond were awarded another short for an ‘offence’ in the D and the umpire suggested that some calming words were had with the miscreant in order to avert a recurrence – so never to ignore the advice of an umpire Dave administered some quietening words. The defence then started to prepare for the injection, but before being ready the ball was at the top of the D, Sarosh was still on the line and the attack had an eternity to pick their spot for the 2

nd goal.

This did little to quieten the game down and the resulting decisions during the following 15 minutes were hard to comprehend or indeed document. However, the bare facts were as follows: Richmond were awarded a flick, PM’s went down to 10 men, Richmond scored their 3rd. Then Richmond were reduced to 10 men, followed by PM’s being asked to ‘rest’ another player and within 2 mins the game was being played with 9 a-side. The last 20 mins were played out with both keepers making one great save each and eventually both sides going back up to 11 players. So the game ended at 0 – 3 to Richmond and what to the reader must seem to have been a very physical, acrimonious and problematic game. But both sets of players agreed in post match discussions that they thought the game was played in a competitive, but convivial spirit and couldn’t really see the need for that many (if any) cards at all. So in summary, a strange game and a result that didn’t really reflect the balance of play. Man of the match is relatively easy and goes to Jacko for his all round contribution not only in the middle, but also their D and on a couple of occasions ours as well. “Màlmand”


Men’s 3's v Oxford 5's Saturday 1st November Won 4-1

An Oxford Comma, So a nice early trip up to Oxford Brookes was not what everyone wanted the morning after Halloween. Alex's eye-liner was testament to that. However the 3's were able to call upon a full team of 14. Having enjoyed the previous week’s performance so much, both Coops and Stobsy had made the long journey to cheer on the 3's (and run the bench). The 3's started well, however soon suffered a horror movie style lapse in concentration. The right side was left completely open, which was exploited by an Oxford aerial and after cutting in the ball pin-balled around the D before an Oxford forward fired in a great reverse stick off the post. The 3's regrouped from this setback and began applying some real pressure. However much like a murder victims chances of escape in a film, as the chances were missed. However, in these misses the keeper’s fondness for going to ground was exposed. With a break down the left Alex fired into the D where Kushal laid of a perfect one touch pass to Jimmy who advanced on the keeper, who dived to the ground, so Jimmy ran past him and slotted home.1-1. Oxford then found themselves under more pressure than Fiona Wolf, and after good work from Nick, Jimmy won a short, which Scott dispatched. 2-1. Half time. After the restart Oxford came hard out of the blocks in search of an equaliser. Pushing hard however they couldn't breech the steely 3's defence, then quick as a social media hash-tag campaign to raise awareness (in not money) the 3's hit back. Wrighty powered the ball from right back to Left mid, where Alex then hit the ball across the D and Kushal eased a deflection past the keeper. 3-1. the 3's then went on to missing chances again but the fight had gone from Oxford. A host of chances went by until another attack down the left released Jimmy down the byline where he squared past the keeper for NICK SMITH dived in to slot home. His first goal in about 5 years. Still time for Oxford to power a ball into the bar but it ended 4-1. A good sold performance despite the shaky start. There were many candidates for man of the match. Kushal scored a great goal, and set up the first. Jimmy had the Oxford players in knots, scored the first, won the short for the 2nd and set up the 4th. However it went to Nick this week. Great overall performance and capped with the final goal of the day. The 2nd time a 3rd team player has returned from the 4's and scored. A good selection headache for the captain. Dick of the day? Well this week went to Alex for...well for not knowing the scoreline at half time. It was a day where no-one really messed up so apparently this offence was deemed grave enough by the team.

Men’s 3's vs West London 1's Saturday 8th November Won 3-1

Hockey Does Eastcote's Talking

After a previous weeks events, the 3's went into this game joint top with Marlow and West London. So for this clash the stakes were high. The 3's were missing several key members for this match mainly in Korea and Japan and things weren't improved when Ross called in sick Saturday morning. Monty was then caught in traffic so the 3's had to put a bit of a scratch side together for the start of the game. Games with West London have tended to be feisty to say the least however the game would be graced by county umpires in a rare treat for the division 3. Despite the importance of the game it seemed the 3's were still waking up for the early start. West London cut through the 3's like good accounting into Tesco's profits, and the West London forward was able to chip over Geoff from a tight angle. This could have set the tone for a very long game for the 3's. However it seemed to galvanise the 3's somewhat. Monty arrived and was able to shore up the defence. Soon the 3's began pushing forward, and West London were kept to a counter attacking game. The 3's were not intimidated and gave as good as they got. Harvey Dan and Kushal kept the defence guessing and soon with a swift move down the right the ball was squared to Alex who on the third attempt managed to get the ball over the keeper. Scott went close from a short and Dan was extremely unlucky to put the 3's ahead before half time. Focusing on the hard work, Coops adjusted the make up of the midfield. The 3's went out to chase the result, feeling it was there game to win. The 2nd half was similar to the first. The 3's pushed on and West London seemed as secure as Ed Miliband. Eventually a break came with a reverse stick tackle from Kushal in the D on a West London defender, squared to Harvey who slotted home. West London weren't best pleased but both umpires saw no offence so 2-1 it stood. Now the game began to ebb and flow. However the game took a turn when Harvey received a yellow for deliberately breaking up play. This seemed a little harsh, all things considered but gave West London a way back into the game. As series of short corners followed but West London wasted them all. The 3's dug in, dug deep and played there way through everything West London tried. Harvey returned to the pitch and with 2 minutes to go settled the game. Catching West London in possession he was through one on one, and as accurately as Lidl targeting middle class people in the sh*t he rounded the keeper and slammed the ball into the net. 3-1, and game over. With this win, and results going our way, means that not only have the 3's won 3 in a row. Not only have we now exceeded last season's points tally. We are top of the league! Err team of the week nomination Rob, nudge nudge. A great performance where the 3's came from a goal down against tough opposition. They refused to be intimidated and proved they had more to call upon when it came to playing the game.


Man of the match, great games from Jimmy and Scott in the middle, while Kushal showed bravery when winning the ball for the 2nd goal, Alex had a great game on the left, scored the equaliser and was a constant thorn. However it had to be 2 goal hero Harvey, two clinical goals and although he managed to get a yellow card, was more down to his hard work. Dick of the day? Jeff, got a bit too enthusiastic with the language putting a point across to his fellow defenders, and there were ladies present on the sideline! Most ungentlemanly and besmirching the 3's honour.

Eagles v Amersham & Chalfont 4’s Saturday 8th November Draw H20 – H20

Damp Squib One week before the first Eagles game for a number of weeks we had an u14s Dragons game in Slough. On the morning of the game it was raining, and a number of concerned parents rang, emailed and sent text messages to ensure that the game will still take place. I assured them all that the only thing that stops a hockey match is snow and ice.... So I was wrong, rain can stop a hockey match if the pitch has a corner that does not drain and it does not stop raining. So the usual adventurous journey to Newlands was to no avail, with 14 Eagles and a 200% league record hopes were high, but H2O had another plan. On arrival is was clear that no one was on the pitch as it resembled an open air swimming pool of the old days. The opposition were confidant that the rain would stop in 10 minutes and a further 15 minutes for he pitch to drain and 20 minutes of the ladies game to complete we would be on at 4.30 1 hour later than our fixture time. All were agreeable as we live for hockey and need our weekly fix. The rain did stop on schedule and the opposition dutifully appeared with large brooms and tried to sweep away water! Now I know where the phrase of pushing water up hill comes from. The problem was that every time they swept the water magically returned as it had no where to go apart from the flooded corner, Mikey volunteered to take his shoes and socks off and stand in the corner I am still trying to work out what he was going to do. The opposition declined, but were still optimistic, the ladies team went home. We had a discussion to suggest a friendly but most of the more mature Eagles opted to stay in the car. When it started raining again the opposition finally gave up and the game was postponed. So some Eagles departed to the nearest watering hole, apparently the water on the pitch was not good enough. The rest returned to HQ to witness an ex Eagle score a hattrick for the 5s nice one Joe. So fingers crossed League fixture three against a new side will be a little dryer. Z

Ladies 3’s v NPL 1’s Saturday 8th November Won 6 – 1

‘Tiger Balm/Bum’ Last weekend the Eastcote Ladies 3s took on NPL. After a good warm up and witnessing a near fight at the end of the previous game, the Ladies 3s were ready. Early on we were able to get a goal scored by Laura. After this, much of the first half was a struggle due to some miscommunication about the press. With NPL attacking high, the Eastcote defence had a few overloads and struggled to keep the ball this unfortunately led to NPL equalising, making it 1-1 at half time. After a great team talk from Captain Lucy C at half time, the press was sorted, the shape was clear and the ladies in red were able to start fresh and the second half was completely different. We dominated throughout the half and the goals were flowing. Holding our shape in the middle meant we were able to breakdown NPL’s play and get the goals we needed. The final score was 6-1 with the second half goals from Lucy L (2), Laura (2 more after her first half goal) and Rhiannon. Overall it was a great match showing great determination from everyone after finishing the 1

st half 1-1.

Man of the match went to Fabi after some excellent runs down the right, beating their defence every time. We had two nominees for DOD- Catherine and Natalie. Catherine decided to go to a member’s only car park next to the NPL pitch which she then couldn’t get out of, and then drove on the wrong side of the road! The other nominee was Natalie who believed that the Nestle factory was Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory & the glass lift was the T.A.R.D.I.S from Dr Who! She dug herself a bigger hole when believing Evie who told her Tiger Balm is made of tiger poo and ‘balm’ sounds like ‘bum’. Natalie was the winner, even though she demanded a recount! We’re starting to think she likes that Banana Onesie!


Men’s 5s v Witney 3s Saturday 8th November Won 5-1

Houston we have lift off! Rubbish title (Whitney...get it!?) but great game. A marginally older than normal team (average must have been over 17!) took on an unusually young opposition. Witney 3s are their clubs development team as well, so we were nicely matched up for the contest. We took the lead with Colin sweeping at goal from top D which found Tony at the far post to convert, after a pull back by Lewis. Malcolm decided it was only fair to square things up so having called for the ball and received it in the centre of defence, he presented it to their centre forward who took it round Geoff. We were soon back on top after Colin converted a short corner and nearly went two up when a second corner strike was cleared off the line. So 2-1 at half time. After some wise words by Garfield at half time, we started what can only be described as the first edition of the Joey Eastcote show! Staring a young Joe Snell. In a variety of different manoeuvres, culminating in a virtuoso dribble that took out at least 3 players, Joe scored a second half hat-trick of great quality. It was quite amusing seeing the 6 foot something right back cower over Joey who we are sure at times actually ran through his legs. A great game. The additional of the older players really worked to the benefit of the youngsters who played with greater freedom having had some of the pressure taken off their shoulders.

Ladies 2’s v Harrow 1’s Saturday 8th November Lost 0 – 1 Dear Reader, it has transpired that one has to be voted as DOD to retain the "privilege " of being the match report writer, thus it was that I threw myself onto my sword of public humiliation in order to receive an almost unanimous vote for DOD (not for missing a PF surprisingly but for some minor verbal misdemeanour), so order is restored and don't expect an actual match report, more an outline overview.... so we hosted the team second in the league, Harrow. we made a slight adjustment to the lineup and structure and we played well, really well, really really well. Really well. Some fantastic individual performances (Lennie, Janet, Jen, Tonya to name but 4) but even more importantly some really good team play. We started very brightly and so they scored. Our back 4 played well throughout the game bty (but they yielded) Then we continued to pressurise, with Ninja Beau , Maaike, Len and Jackie all making some exciting forays in attack, we earned corners , had numerous shots but the Harrow keeper (Pee) was bloody brilliant . then something bad happened (I think that Maaike did something rather good in the D) and we earned a PF.

Now I'm very confident about my ability to put these away. So I missed..... The team were fantastic, we had far more pressure than Harrow, many more shots but came away with no points but a lot of pride in our performance (not me, I missed a flick). MOM : close run but Lennie , who covered miles , was involved in every attack and only fell over 14 times won by a short head, DOD: Me, even I voted for me. Tickets to the hugely popular Hockey 5s at The SSE Arena, Wembley are now on sale.

Hockey 5s is the indoor version of field hockey, with 5-

a-side teams going head-to-head in 40-minute matches, which you won’t be able to take your eyes off!

Last year's event saw a staggering 52 goals scored

across four action-packed games!

Advance tickets start from £17.50 for adults and £7.50 for U18s. Group ticket offers available until Friday 19

December.

Under 12 girls at Brunel Chilterns U12G Division 3, Series 2, Round 1 Just a short email to confirm that we had a very good set of games at Brunel today, unfortunately we did not have 7 players and were down to 6. In the first game which we won, we played outstandingly well – we borrowed a player from Amersham and Chalfont and managed to win the game. Strong performances from Olivia and Molly. In the second game against Wycombe, we weren’t able to borrow a player and were playing with only 6 which meant our defence had their work cut out for them along with the midfield, although we lost this particular game, strong performances from Kara and Mia and Abbie. The final game was against Buckingham and again still with just 6 players, we were unable to hold against this strong side great play from Amy, the girls were 100 percent committed which showed in particular in the second half. Boys U12 tournament Chilterns U12B Division 2, Series 2, Round 1 3 Wins Beat St Albans 3-1, Amersham A 2-0

and Amersham B 9-0 The boys put in a fantastic performance with every player scoring at least one goal. We started off against St Albans and after a closely fought match ended up victorious 3-1 with Auke converting a short. Amersham were our next opponents and put in a solid performance but after some great work in midfield by Ollie Laz and a great save by Thomas, the boys came out on top again. With our tails up and confidence running high, we took on Amersham Bs. Their team performed better than the final score line would suggest but we were showing some fine goal scoring skills. We led 4-0 at half time including a great sweep shot from the edge of the D by Leo which hit the roof of the net. Final score after a second half brace by Maccon was 9-0. A thoroughly enjoyable morning in the Chiltern sunshine, with all the boys enjoying their hockey. Team was Thomas in goal, Alex J, Auke, Giles, Leo, Ollie L, Paras, Ollie W, Maccon and Alex B.

U12 Gilrs at Harrow Chilterns U12G Division 1, Series 2, Round 1 A&C 'A' lost 1-2 A&C 'B' won 4-0 Harrow lost 0-1 The girls played some excellent hockey against some tough opposition. We defended extremely well and created some wonderful chances on goal.

U14Girls . V Reading It was always going to be a tough match against Reading but we were not phased by anything that they did. The first half was end to end play and we seemed to have the most chances at scoring. Their two person defence seemed to pin our girls down at times but somehow we were managing to break through. We definitely had more attacking short corners. At one stage the ball lifted from Cerys stick into the back of the goal but was unfortunately the first strike so disallowed .This rattled Reading. It was also noticed that they were putting a defensive block around Sabrina Sophie and Megan when a16y hit given. This needed to be broken so a half time Colin and Andy explained what needed to be done to break this circle. Also why not try this ourselves.

The second half saw them trying different tactics. Cerys and Philly at times seemed to has 3 players marking them. But somehow this did not stop them. Again we had chances Anna just outside post. The rule of playing advantage seemed to have different meanings according to which goal was being attacked. Numerous times the ball went on a reading players foot especially in the D but play on allowed even when no advantage made the offence was not brought back to a short corner. However at the other end within seconds if a strike was not made immediately then they went straight to the short. This was a noticeable change to the first half. The girls did not give up and kept the pace going throughout the game. Well done all. Final score Reading 3-0 Eastcote. (But they had to really work for that!) Lesley
