When the eggs hatched, something was very strange. One of the ducklings didn’t look anything like his brothers and sisters. They were yellow, and he was grey. He was much bigger than them too.
The other ducks wouldn’t play with him and said that he was ugly. The poor duckling was very unhappy, and he ran away to find some other ducklings that looked like him.
The duckling met some geese. “Have you ever seen a duckling that looks like me?” he asked. The geese laughed and shook their heads. “No, we’ve never seen anything as ugly as you,” they said.
The duckling met a dog. “Have you ever seen a duckling that looks like me?” he asked. The dog laughed and shook his head. “No, I’ve never seen anything as ugly as you,” he said.
The poor duckling waddled down the road with a heavy heart. “I’ll never find anyone like me,” he thought to himself.
Time passed and one day, the duckling was walking by a river. By now he had grown very big. He saw two beautiful swans fly by. “How lovely those birds are,” he thought to himself.
He decided to look at himself in the water. “Look at my long neck,” he said to himself. “I don’t even look like a duck. I wonder if I might be a swan?”
The swans swooped down to talk to him. At once they became the best of friends. They all agreed that the ugly duckling had grown into the finest looking swan of them all.
