The Educational ConceptThe Early College at Guilford is among a growing body of early college entrance schools across the nation. In partnership with Guilford College, the school offers a writing-intensive, fast-paced curriculum in which students take Honors and Advanced Placement courses in ninth and 10th grades, followed by two years of full-time college work.

High School CoursesStudents in the ninth and 10th grades enroll in eight courses per year on a block or modified block schedule. The courses, predominantly at the Honors and Advanced Placement levels, are taught by Guilford County Schools teachers. Students engage in challenging learning experiences that require critical and creative thinking. Students may also select from a wide variety of activities that offer opportunities for service, teamwork and leadership development. This accelerated curriculum prepares students for a smooth transition to college.

College Courses In grades 11 and 12, students take college courses with undergraduate students taught by Guilford College professors. Academic advisers work with students to build course schedules to meet high school and college requirements. Students take at least four college courses each semester. Students may register for a wide variety of courses as long as they have the prerequisite courses and skills. Students benefit from Guilford College’s wide range of liberal arts and pre-professional fields of study. Early College students graduate with a high school diploma and two years of undergraduate credits from Guilford College.

Who Should Apply?Students with a solid record of excellent academic performance and a desire for a challenging academic experience should apply to The Early College at Guilford. Students who thrive in the school’s learning environment are described as motivated, self-regulated, independent thinkers and learners.

The Admissions ProcessStudents are selected to attend the school in a competitive process that evaluates academic achievement, standardized test results, academic recommendations, personal essays and self-reported interests and activities. An Admissions Team representing the school and the college reviews applications from prospective students using a holistic process.
