Wy’east Catches Fire
Many students went to go see The Hun-
ger Games: Catching Fire movie. If you
haven’t seen it you should. It is AWE-
SOME!!!!!!! Over 130 students and par-
ents attended! Students could only attend
if they had read The Hunger Games and
Catching Fire. If you hadn’t seen the first
movie it was shown before the buses
came. The buses arrived at Wy’east and
took us to the movie theater at 5:15 PM.
People started buying snacks. In fact, so
many snacks were bought that the movie
theatre ran out of popcorn. Overall
Catching Fire was the best movie I have
ever seen!!!!!

Fire By: Raul Lica
Everybody read
the Hunger
Games. I hope you
enjoyed the book,
but the awesome
part about the book
is that you got to
see the movie. If
you wanted to see
the Hunger Games
movie you had to at
least have read the
book. In my opin-
ion, the books are
better than the mov-
ies because the
books have more
detail than the mov-
ies. The good thing
is that we are al-
lowed to buy things
in the theater. I
hope you enjoyed
the movie!
Thanksgiving
On Thanksgiving, do you
like to eat or spend time
with your family? Well, I
think that the whole day is
great. Just eating Thanks-
giving food makes me
smile! On Thanksgiving,
when I walk around the
house the whole place is
filled! Everybody is always
stuffing their plates and
talking. Most of the time
they just talk about their
jobs, but I still just sit there
listening to their funny sto-
ries. After that my brother
laughs at me and says , “Go
eat” so I do. Last year my
uncles filled my sisters
Alex’s plate with pie!! It
was really funny because
they made her eat it. To me
Thanksgiving is just a great
day to eat and hang out with
family. What do you like to
do on Thanksgiving? Do
you have any plans this
year? I’m sure that it will
be good whatever you’re
doing. Have a great
Thanksgiving!!

Splash Into Science
Poster Contest Splash Into Science is coming
up in March. The students who
are going have had bake sales,
sold snacks at the basketball
games, and they are receiving
some of the money from the
dance. To help more students
get involved we are having a
poster contest to get the word
out. All the posters must be
school appropriate and have a
splash into science theme, you
can draw it on a piece of pa-
per . The posters must be
turned into Mrs. Arechaga by
the end of January. The win-
ning poster will receive a prize
and will have their poster
placed all around the school.
Good luck and have fun mak-
ing your poster.

Food Drive Many schools around the
country have food drives for
their local food banks. Here at
Wy'east, we do them too. Food
drives are great to support
families in need. Canned foods
and packaged foods are need-
ed at food banks, so when kids
bring them in from home, it
really helps. Our food drive
was the 2nd- 19th of December,
and we got quite a few dona-
tions! The class with the most
food brought in was Arechaga
with 230 donations! 2nd place
was Pritchett with 160 dona-
tions. Finally, in 3rd place,
Sampson’s class brought in 88
donations. The school total for
cans was 1,111, and we raised
$150 off of money donations.
As you can see, food dona-
tions are very important, but if
you want to help even more,
you can go and volunteer at
the F.I.S.H. food bank and
serve food to the families.

OBOB
If you guys like reading books
and you can’t stop reading, then
you should join Oregon Battle Of
The Books. A short name for it
would be OBOB. OBOB is a
nice time to read really interest-
ing books. Also, it’s fun because
you can pass time reading and
discussing books with your
friends. These are some books of
the books that are in the OBOB:
Bigger Than a Bread Box by
Laurel Snyder, Magyk by Angie
Sage, Middle School: The Worst
Years Of My Life by James Pat-
terson. There are way more
books in the OBOB, but these are
the best. So if you like reading
you should join OBOB before
they stop letting people sign up.

The Snow is Here The snow is here! Winter is the second best
season of all four seasons. Of course summer is
the best because there is no school, but winter
is as good as summer. Snow is fun to play in. I
sometimes have snow ball fights with my little
brother. Other times, I’ll sled in my backyard. I
hardly make snowmen like other people do.
One year I made a snow fort with the roof and
everything. I hope there will be another ice
storm like last year. As you can see you can be
very artistic with snow.
By: Aidan Hicks
Snow Activities By: Raul Lica
There are fun games you can play in the snow.
Here are some ideas to have fun in the snow.
How to build a snow man. Get 3 balls of snow
and stack them together. Than you can make
his eyes and his mouth. Get a carrot and put it
on his nose. Then you can decorate the snow
man. It will look something like this.

Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela was a South African
Politian who stood up for black rights
in Africa. He was the first black presi-
dent of South Africa in 1994 and
stepped down after 5 years. He’s also
won a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping
the apartheid in South Africa. Apart-
heid is a system where black South Af-
ricans don’t get the same rights as
white South Africans. They needed to
carry a pass to go anywhere and were-
n’t allowed to marry whites and if they
do they were beaten or killed. He
stopped it by getting other people to
debate against it. Before being the
first black president in South Africa he
was a boxer. He stopped boxing after
being in prison for 27 years for start-
ing a conspiracy and encouraging
South Africans to go on strike. He was
born on July 18 1918 and died on De-
cember 5 2013 at the age of 95.

Three Fantastic Pranks
Pranks are fun, but with broth-
ers and sisters it’s even better
because they make everyone
laugh. It’s just fun to pick on
them. One, if your brothers or
sisters are scared of spiders get
a pack of spiders and hide them
in his/her room or when he/she
are busy. Dump a ton on them to
freak them out. Two, talk to
your dad or big brother into
throwing him/her outside and
get a cup of water to dump on
him/her when he/she backs up
you close the door and repeat.
Three, if your mom or dad de-
cides to get a scary movie to
watch one night, get behind the
couch so when it gets to the part
where they play freaky music,
open the door, grab him/her, and
listen to the high pitch scream
they let it out.
Caution: When performing
these pranks beware, you are
poking the bear so that usually
means it won’t turn out well in
the end. So watch out and
HAVE FUN!!!

The Man eating sandwich V.S
A Giant Robot
One normal day, there was a scientist
that was making a sandwich. When it
was complete, he took a bite then he
put it down to savor the bite. Little did
he know that it would be his last. He
went to help somebody with cleaning
supplies, but as he got up he accidently
knocked over a chemical and it fell on
his sandwich. The sandwich turned into
a monster and ate everyone in the lab.
Soon it hit the city of Awesomeopolus.
The Sandwich grew wings so they cre-
ated giant robots to defeat it. The robot
was big and had lasers. When the robot
met the sandwich, they got in a big
fight. The robot and the sandwich de-
cided to stop fighting after a while, so
they went to get lunch ( they ate sand-wiches by the way). They saw a movie
that the robot enjoyed a lot called Pa-
cific Rim. They lived happily ever after.
(Even though the sandwich still is ad-dicted to humans.)

The Globe
Brie sat in class, staring at the
globe. She thought she saw it
twinkle and she was fascinated
with the country Cameroon. She
saw everything twinkle and mag-
ically appeared in the country
Cameroon. It was very sunny and
hot. She was sure she was in
Cameroon. It is near the Central
African Republic, close to the
equator. It was a desert with no-
body within a 90 mile radius. She
set out to find a way out. Soon it
was dark and freezing. She saw a
strange outline jumped toward
her. She batted it away but not
before it bit her leg. It was full of
venom! She died that night. She
thought she was in Heaven but
her eyes adjusted and she was in
the classroom. To this day she
doesn’t understand how it hap-
pened but she didn’t dare stare at
another globe again.

summer air. I was yanked
back by the tire swing and
hit the willow tree incredi-

something that you should

SPORTS
Playing All-Stars
Playing All-Stars is probably the best
thing that has ever happened to me.
Last year in All-Stars, I played in Bend
and I had a great time. All-Stars is a
baseball tournament. There are several
teams made up of good players from
Hood River, North Bend, South Bend,
The Dalles, Redmond, and Hermiston.
If your team lost two times it would be
eliminated from playing baseball
against the other teams, unless you
played a scrimmage game. My team
played Hermiston and won 16-4. The
next team we played was The Dalles
and we lost 7-11. The next time we won
4-3. Playing Redmond was very scary
because in the last inning, my team was
worn out. My coaches Sal Rivera, Dan
Homer, and Luis Jimenez chose a kid
named Nolan Ryan to pitch the last in-
ning. Nolan made two strikeouts and
the last out. The last out was made by a
bunt the batter on the other team. Nolan
ran up to the ball, picked it up, threw it
to first base and he was out. The whole
team was happy. Last we played South
Bend and sadly we lost 14-4. Some of
us didn’t go home just yet, because the
next day was the fourth of July. Instead,
we stayed and watched the fireworks
and had a good time.

The Civil War In the first quarter, the Ducks made two
touchdowns and two field goals which
started off the game 17-0. In the second
quarter, the Beavers scored one touch-
down and one field goal which made it
17-7. In the same quarter, Beavers
made one touchdown and one field goal
making it 17-17. The Ducks scored 14
points and Beavers scored 3 making it
24-20. In the third quarter, Beavers
scored 3 more points making it 24-23.
In the same quarter, Beavers took the
lead with one touchdown making it 24-
29. In the final quarter Ducks took the
lead again making it 30-29. In the same
quarter, the Beavers and the Ducks
scored once making it 36-35. Clearly, it
was a great game.

How to Dress
So was up guys it’s
your girl, Eden, and today
I am going to teach you
how to dress - yah um
you.
Well rule 1: Work
with what you got. Rule
2: Match. Rule 3: Don’t
get fashion advice from
your parents which brings
me to Rule 4: Don’t let
your parents choose out
your clothes. BAD idea.
Okay ladies if you
got some black leggings,
match it with a bright col-
ored top and some cute
shoes that match your
shirt. Please don’t pair a
banana colored shirt and
some broccoli-colored
shoes, NOT cute.
Advice: obviously
match and if you’re wear-
ing dark bottoms don’t
wear a dark top because
you’ll look angry and de-
pressed. Don’t wear too
much of one color on the
same outfit. For example,
don’t wear a red tank-top
with some red top and red
skinny jeans. We know
colored jeans aren’t cool,
no matter how much you
claim you’re making a
fashion statement. It
doesn’t matter and please
don’t top it off with some
red shoes, because after
all of that you’re going to
look like a blown up red
balloon and so no Bue-
nos.
Now moving on to
what’s in style now, I'm
not saying to be basic and
look like you are copying
someone’s else’s style be-
cause fashion is all about
expressing yourself on
what you wearing. What’s
in style right now: this
winter, probably some
boots and a baggy sweat-
er or a cool blouse with a
scarf and some cute ac-
cessories like arm candy
and earrings or rings.
Take it from me,
fashion can get you a lot
in life. Like when your
older, a fashion career
gets you a decent guy
friend if you know what I
mean, or you can just
look plain amaze balls! If
you like this article, you
can maybe catch my next
one. It might be about
hair, shoes, or just swag
in general. Only you
know who says that word.
Anyway, adios.

Best Outfits of the Month
This month’s best outfits were worn by
Emily Curtis and Jaqui Marquez. Emi-
ly’s outfit is perfect for the winter. She’s
wearing a black skirt with a white crop
top. Over the crop top she is wearing a
black cardigan that covers her top. She is
also wearing black leggings under her
skirt. The best thing from her outfit is the
scarf because it is pink and orange and
really pops out from what she is wear-
ing. We interviewed Emily and asked
where she got her clothes from. Her car-
digan and combat boots are from Kohl’s,
her skirt is from Pacsun, her top is from
Charlotte Russe, her leggings are from
Maurice’s, her socks are from American
eagle, and her scarf is from Love Cul-
ture. Jaqui’s outfit is perfect for going
out on a chilly day for coffee. Her outfit
includes a maroon hoodie from Aero-
postale, and a her tribal print scarf is
from Charlotte Russe. Her jeans are
from Hollister and her boots are from a
local store.
These are the best outfits of the month
and remember if you see them in the
hallways congratulate them. If you want
to be the next outfit of the month make
sure to wear your favorite outfit and
show us!

Advice
“I do not know how to swim. What
do I do?”
Well one thing you could do is prac-
tice. Find your weak spot like kicking
or diving. Then pay attention to that.
Once you master it, do the same thing
until you cannot find any flaws. You
could also ask relatives for advice.
Sincerely, Angel 10 Page 15

Craneprairy
Craneprairy, a camp site,
is one of the best camp
sites there is. Its got many
fun things to do like rid-
ing bikes, swimming,
fishing, a horse shoe pit, a
swimming dock, and you
can rent a kayak for about
twenty dollars which is
pretty cheap. When it gets
dark, you can make a fire
in the fire pit and roast
marshmallows. As you
can see Craneprairy is an
awesome camp site.

PLACES TO VISIT
Silver Wood
Silver Wood is a place where kids and adults have
fun. Silver Wood is in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho,
about 80-90 miles away from Canada. Silver
Wood has a theme park and a water park. The first
park my family and I went to was the water park.
It had all kinds of obstacles to go on. The first ob-
stacle was a slide with water shooting out of the
sides. The slide was yellow and it had lots of
turns, and at the end there was a pool. Then we
went to the wave pool. It was so fun that I can’t
explain how fun it was. Next was the lazy river.
The lazy river was pretty boring. All you did was
float on an inner tube very slowly on water. Then
we went to the theme park. The theme park had all
kinds of rides to go on. The first ride we went on
was tremors. Tremors is a roller coaster that goes
at least 50-55 M.P.H. It was the best ride there.
The next roller coaster was cork screw. Cork
screw was the second best ride there. Cork screw
is a roller coaster that does 2 swirls and that’s it.
Silver Wood is a fun park. You should go there
sometime.

California
On Thanksgiving Break, some people
go on vacation, some people stay home,
and some people host or go to a Thanks-
giving dinner. This year for the first
time, I went to California. We flew to
California then drove home. It was a re-
ally fun trip and you should go too!
There are many places to go and things
to see, including Hollywood, where all
the famous people go to film the movies
they are in. We even got to see them
filming a movie right by where we were
driving, right when we drove by! We al-
so got to see the tar pits that made lots
of animals extinct. A lot of times it was
warm enough to go outside without a
sweater and go swimming. Also, you
can go to the beach and play in the
ocean and sand. There are many flowers
blooming and fruit ripening. It may not
be snowy, or super-hot, but the tempera-
ture is perfect. There are lots of cool
plants you don’t see in Hood River too,
like cacti, palm trees, and many exotic
flowers! California is a really fun place
to visit, and you should go sometime. It
was a really fun first experience, and
there is much more to see. California is
a great place to visit for vacation.

Mr. McFadden Interview by
Skyler Beard
How has your first year teaching at
Wy’east been so far?
It’s going really well. It is always tough go-
ing into a new school and being a teacher
that is replacing someone that students
liked.
Did you always want to be a teacher? If
so, Why? If not, what did you want to
be?
I knew I wanted to be a teacher as a senior
in high school, but previously I wanted to
be a chef and own my own restaurant.
Do you like living here? Why or why
not?
I do like living in Hood River. It is a beauti-
ful town. The people are some of the nicest
people I have met, and I moved from a city
that was known for nice people.
Has music always been your favorite top-
ic?
No, actually it was always important to me
and I enjoyed it, but until about my junior
year of High School, I played baseball.
Why did you pick Wy’east?
I picked Wy’east, because in the interview I
could tell the students were willing to work
hard in a level of musicianship.

Art Class After school, we have a lot
of fun classes, but my over-
all favorite is after-school art
class. Art is really fun be-
cause the art teacher lets us
pick what supplies we want
to use. We get to draw what-
ever we want! We can talk
whenever we want except
when she is talking, and we
can use a lot of different
things. Anything you can
think of, including quilling,
pastels, paints, markers, felt,
pipe cleaners, and many
more. Pretty much any art
supplies you can think of!
We even used graphite once!
We even get to make our
own art portfolio to put all of
our art we draw in the class.
It is a really fun class, and I
think you should join this
class. It is after-school every
other Monday.

GAME CENTER
Age of Empires II:
The Age of Kings Computer game
By: Jayce Christopherson
The game Age of
Empires is a war strategy
game. In the game you build
a city (or more) and conquer
others. You get to pick from a
list of ancient civilizations.
The game also offers many
different habitats, like deserts
and forests.
Different civilizations have
different buildings and elite
warriors. All warriors have
different skill sets. Scouts are
made for speed, while sword
men are good at fighting other
soldiers. The elite warriors are
really strong and cost a lot of
resources. You can also up-
grade soldiers and buildings
to be stronger.
Buildings allow you to do dif-
ferent things. Some create sol-
diers and others allow you to
have more items and re-
sources. Others are just for
show. Plus the walls, gates
and guard towers are special.
Gates let characters in unless
locked. Walls protect build-
ings and men. Guard towers
shoot arrows at enemies.
This game is really fun, as
you can see. If you have an
assignment you can go here
and learn about the civiliza-
tion. It also gives your arm a
workout. I hope you get this
awesome game.

Legend of Zelda: A Link
Between Worlds
By: Wyatt Brownlee
Now that A Link Between Worlds is
finally out, I now have had a chance
to play it a lot. I have beaten it, so
now I am going to tell you about it.
The first thing I am going to talk
about is the graphics they are amaz-
ing. You can also merge into walls
and go places that you could never
go. I was sort of surprised when I
found out that the world is exactly
the same as the game a Legend of
Zelda: A Link to the Past. The evil
people are princess Hilda of Lou-
rule and Yuga. Yuga is an evil man
that can turn people into paintings
or just drawings on the wall. Prin-
cess Hilda is the ruler of Lourule
and her kingdom was destroyed be-
cause Lourules triforce was lost for-
ever. So Princess Hilda wants to
take Hyrules triforce and bring it to
Lourule so it can become beautiful
again. So you have to stop them
from destroying Hyrule. I am not
going to spoil anything else for you
so if you want to know more you’ll
have to get the game. If you do, I
hope you enjoy it.

Should school
have movie nights
on Fridays? By: Jennifer Lepez
School should have a
movie night every
other Friday. It would
be a fun event, you
could hang out with
your friends, and it
could help the school
earn some money for
more fun events. The
entrance fee could be
$4.00 per person, and
maybe they could sell
some snacks during
the movie. That’s
why I think there
should be movie
night on every other
Friday.

Vending Machines By: Wyatt Brownlee
A lot of students here know
that we have a Gatorade
machine in the gym. So I
think that the school should
get more of them and put
them in the school. And to
make it even better I think
that we should get vending
machines in the school. I
think that this is a good
idea because some students
get hungry and want to eat
something tasty before and
during classes. They could
have so many snacks in
them. And they all don’t
have to have junk food in
them. They could also have
healthy snacks in them too.
The kids could also buy the
snacks and save them for
the bus or for something
extra for lunch.
Winter Dance
Canceled, Not Fair! By: Gracie Meyers & Aileen
Castro
Winter dance being canceled
is not fair because a lot of
people made plans before
and after the dance. There-
fore, there was a big crowd
at the office to call their par-
ents. Also, a lot of parents
might have been upset about
the cancellation. Friends
went over to each other’s
houses to get ready for the
dance together, or for a
sleepover. It also probably
messed up a lot of parent’s
schedules, because they had
to work or cancel work to be
home with their kids. Some
parents also might have
planned to chaperone at the
dance. As you can see, the
dance being canceled
messed up a lot of student’s
plans. Page 26
