Junior John LaPolla has always had an interest in business and wanted to share that passion with his fellow Kennedy classmates. His plan was to form a group that would use real, practical business experience to help educate students at Kennedy who have an interest in that field of study. John saw the potential for success by contacting Kennedy alumni who have had success in their field of business to mentor their group. During the first semester the Wolves have had the opportunity to meet with many local and national business contacts including these alumni:

Regina (Rebhan) Mitchell ’89 is the President of Warren Fabricating & Machine. War Fab has been in operation for over 50 years, and is a unique manufacturer specializing in the fabrication, machining and assembly of large steel weldments. The business has expanded over the years to 800 employees and multiple locations. Regina took the Wolves on a tour of both their factory and warehouses. She encouraged the students to be bold in business, not to be afraid of taking chances and that failure can only enhance success later on.

Patrick Mokros ’00 is the President of Empire Stock Transfer. He met with the Wolves to discuss his experiences in business, starting with his time in college where he actively worked in internships to learn more about all aspects of business. He strongly advocated for students to work in different fields in order to have a better understanding of the type of work best suited to them. Patrick also gave the Wolves early access to review and give feedback for one of his newest projects, Wishlu, a website designed to help friends and family give and receive gifts.

Eagles Recognized in Annual 20 Under Twenty Awards

Kennedy to Host Drug & Alcohol Summit

The Tribune Chronicle annually focuses attention on the county’s youngest and most impressive young people with their 20 Under Twenty program. The primary emphasis of this program is community service. All are younger than 20, and chosen based on a calculation of 50% volunteer work, 25% academics and 25% extracurricular activities. We are proud of the following five Eagles who were recognized in the 20 Under Twenty Class of 2014.

Rachel Cullison ’16 volunteers at Children’s Rehabilitation Center and works with the Kennedy Key Club. For the past two years, Rachel has worked every Wednesday at Children’s Rehab, playing with children and being a source of extra support for the teachers. As a member of the Kennedy Key Club, her work at the St. Vincent dePaul Soup Kitchen has been her fa-vorite.

Maura Dixon ’15 was recognized for her efforts in organizing and promoting Holi Day, an event to raise awareness of Indian culture as well as the lack of educational opportunities for girls in many 3rd world countries. The celebration of the traditional color throw was held outdoors for over 40 participants.

Elizabeth Kellar ’15 organized a “Shots for Tots” Basketball Tournament to benefit Children’s Rehab Center. The coed, three on three tournament, was held for students in grades 9-12. Liz chose Children’s Rehab as the beneficiary because of their excellent reputation and matched that with her love for basketball.

Anna McCue ’15 was recognized for her work with the annual Water Walk held at Kennedy to raise awareness for the Free the Children’s Clean Water Project which aims to provide communities in need with localized clean water sources and sanitation facilities. Her work was inspired by the experience of Kennedy Family members who traveled to rural Kenya on a mission trip in the Summer of 2013.

Marisa Pipino ’15 was instrumental in making the Kairos Retreat available to all high school students in the Diocese of Youngstown. Kairos is a weekend retreat led by students and supported by members of the Campus Ministry team, and other faculty members. Marisa was so inspired by her own experience, she coordinated a weekend at Villa Maria for all interested students.

We are pleased to announce our partnership with the Substance Abuse Coalition Summits, Inc., a non-profit organization, to host a Drug and Alcohol Summit. Professionals from local legal, educational and medical fields will join Kennedy for a three-part event that teaches our students the consequences of making one wrong decision. The program uses “Another Voice” to bring the anti-drug and addiction message to schools.

A pre-trial was held on Friday, December 12, 2014 where students were shown a video called “Graduation Day” that took them through a day in the life of high school friends where one student driving under the influence impacts their lives forever. Following that, a trial date has been set for April 17, 2015. A jury of current students will judge the student driver, local attorneys will defend and prosecute the case and the trial will be overseen by a local judge. After the mock trial, a panel of world-class experts will present an in-service to students and faculty to educate on the impact of addiction. Mr. Joseph Kenneally, Interim President is proud to host this event, “I believe this is information our young men and women should be given so that they have the tools to make good decisions. Education is one the most important factors in the fight against addiction.”

The third component of this event is the opportunity for continuing education credits for professionals in the fields of medicine, education and law. The forum will be held at John F. Kennedy Catholic School on Saturday, April 18, 2015.

Seniors (L to R): Maura Dixon, Marisa Pipino, Anna McCue, and Elizabeth Kellar paired their volunteer work with their efforts to earn their Girl Scout Gold Award.
