MAY 10th is HFE FIELD DAY!!!The most fun day of the year is Field Day!!!

VolunteeringThanks to those who have already volunteered. If you

would like to volunteer to run a center, Opportunities are between 7:45-10:30 am. If you volunteer (1) younger

siblings are not able to tag along and (2) you will have to stay at your assigned station. (i.e....no switching stations to

see your children in a different game, or just wandering around watching.) Volunteering is a blast with plenty of

opportunities to see your HFE students!!!What Children Should Wear to School May 10

For safety reasons, students MUST wear tennis shoes to participate in Field Day [ NO crocs, keen type sandals, etc]. Please help dress them appropriately for the

weather. ALSO... reusable water bottles are encouraged and help teams earn extra points. FUN FOR ALL!

Lots of fun events for all ages! The grade level Tug of Wars will be in the afternoon beginning at 12:15, and the event ends with the Bike Parade at 1:45. The rain date will be Monday, May 12, same times.

HFE STUDENTS LOVE FIELD DAY! THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

Summer Reading Book Fair, MAY 6-9!!!Dreaming of lazy summer days on the porch? Stock up on the books your kids love before you head off for summer break. We’re hosting a small Summer Reading Book Fair on Monday, May 6, through Thursday, May 9, from 7:30am to 3pm in the Media Center. We asked our teachers to provide their favorite recommendations, along with stocking tried-and-true choices, and the hottest titles. Little Shop of Stories (the independent book store in downtown Decatur that sends so many great authors to visit our school) is coordinating this event for us.

A few notes to keep in mind:• In order to keep things simple at year-end, the fair will be cash and checks only (no credit cards).• We can’t allow returns.• We’ll be rounding up prices to the nearest nickel (if you’ve ever volunteered at the fair, you

understand how time consuming a line of customers who pay with piggy bank change can be!)• All purchases are tax free!• We’ll also be open during the Ice Cream social for new families, on

Tuesday, May 7, from 3:30 to 5:30.

All proceeds benefit the HFE Media Center.

We still need a few more volunteers to help with check out. Please contact Rowena Keen,[email protected], if you want to help out!Happy Reading!

GREG’S  GANG  WRISTBANDS  AVAILABLE  NOW!!!"Greg's Gang" wristbands are being sold before school by the Student Council members for $2 each. 100% of proceeds go to Greg's Gang.

Mr. Greg Williams, HFE School CounselorOur School’s Counselor, Greg Williams, is suffering from end stage renal failure and needs a kidney transplant. Mr. Williams has been unable to work for several months and will not be back for the rest of the school year. In addition to all of his medical concerns, he has the added worry of paying his expenses while out on leave. His long-term disability insurance will not begin until later this year. The idea of Greg’s Gang was born to give both encouragement and financial support to Greg Williams. A friend of his created a web page to help raise money to help him cover his living expenses while he fights his medical battle: http://www.giveforward.com/gregsgang. Ann and I urge everyone to log on to the website, read his story, leave him words of encouragement and, if possible, make a donation. We want to show him how much his Heards Ferry family cares. We are praying that Mr. Williams will find a donor soon and will be on the road to recovery. If you would like to send him a letter or card, please drop it, in a stamped envelope, in the front office with Ms. Grimaldo. We will send it to Mr. Williams.

If you would like to learn more about being a living donor: Please call the Living Donor Team at Emory at (866) 727-3250. The living donor team is different from Mr. Williams’ team of specialists. They’re totally dedicated to your health & interests, can answer your specific questions, and your call will be confidential--or visit the living donor website for information. www.transplant.emory.edu.

Thank you for your help! Amy Callahan and Ann Feldman, PTO Co-Presidents

Bento Box LunchHave dinner leftovers but not enough for a full lunch? Try creating your own Bento Box lunch. Bentos are a great way to incorporate all the food groups that your child needs on a daily basis. They are also playful, provide great variety for picky eaters of any age and help reduce food waste. Consider packing it with protein-heavy items that will sustain their energy throughout the day, such as peanut butter, nuts, sliced turkey or cheese. The best bentos include a variety of different types of foods with a balance of colors, flavors and textures, so have some fun with it - you'll certainly be the talk of the lunch hour! Recipe Ideas:South West Chicken Salad Lettuce WrapsThis is a great easy recipe that has endless options. There are many different variations for chicken salad. Try adding some of your child’s favorite fruit and

vegetables to the mix, such as apples, grapes, carrots and peppers. This simple recipe can be made in advance and refrigerated. By adding mayonnaise and a little lemon juice to the salad mixture it will stay fresh for 2-3 days. These wraps are great options if you have a child that is on a gluten-free diet. Servings: 2Ingredients• ½ pound of cooked, shredded chicken (best with a mix of white and dark meat)• 6 large iceberg lettuce leaves (uncut)• 1 celery stalk, chopped fine• 3 tablespoons of all-natural mayonnaise• 1/4 cup scallions (white and green parts) thinly sliced (Optional)•2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice•2 tablespoons of parsley or cilantro finely chopped (Optional) Instructions

In a separate bowl, mix the celery, mayonnaise, scallions, lemon juice and parsley/cilantro together. Add in the chicken and stir together. Scoop the mixture into each lettuce shell and eat like a taco. Tips: If you prefer you can pack the chicken and lettuce leaves separately and let you kids assemble them at school. You can also use whole wheat tortilla wraps or pita bread.

Colorful Chopped Taco SaladThis is the ultimate way to use leftover grilled meats and salsa. This is also gluten-free and can be made dairy-free if need be. Servings: 2

Ingredients• 1 head romaine lettuce or 3 romaine lettuce hearts• 1 green bell pepper, diced• 1 cup corn• 1 black beans, rinsed and drained well• Left over grilled chicken or beef, diced (about 2 cups)• 1 cup shredded cheese, Mexican blend or cheddar cheese (omit if dairy free)• 1 cup salsa of choice served with corn tortilla chips Optional additions: diced avocado; shredded carrots; chopped cilantro leaves, grape tomatoes, black olives.

Instructions1. Cut off the end of the lettuce heads. Using a sharp knife cut thin ribbons of lettuce. Wash and put into a

colander or a salad spinner.2. Cut the bell pepper into small pieces and add to the lettuce. Rinse in the colander and spin dry.3. Put lettuce, pepper, corn and beans into a large bowl. Add the meat and cheese to the bowl and mix well.4. Put salsa and corn chips in separate small reusable plastic containers. Tips: Add more color by replacing yellow corn chips with purple, lentil or quinoa chips. You can also add chopped yellow, orange and red peppers for the rainbow of color. Your kids will enjoy this novel lunch from South of the border!!!
