Our SAC meeting for this month will be held on
November 17, 2016
The first part of the 2016-‐2017 year has gone by quickly. We have completed our first grading period and are well into our second. We continue to work hard in order to allow each of our Eagles to SOAR. As we reflect on the many things for which we are thankful, I want to take this opportunity to share just a few of them with you: We are thankful for our students who come to school every day ready to learn – they give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here. We are thankful for the support of the parents in creating an outstanding partnership for our students. We are thankful for the teachers, instructional assistants, bus drivers, office staff, nurse, lunchroom staff, support staff, and administrators who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of our students at heart. We are also thankful for our volunteers who enthusiastically contribute so much to our school. We see dedicated and tireless individuals going above and beyond to make sure that great things happen in our school. They do make a difference, and the children, in their own individual ways, benefit from those efforts as they continue to SOAR Most importantly, we are thankful for the parents that have kept the faith in us as we continue to help our children SOAR. They continue to share their most valuable possession with us and—in most cases— work hard and advocate to be a partner in their children’s education, safety and well-‐being. For this, we are ever so thankful. I would like to wish all of you and your families a happy, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday! I’m proud to be an Eagle and I hope you are too. Sincerely, Mr. Di Vincent Paul. R. Smith Middle School Principal

Prepared for standardized tests Does your middle schooler have state tests coming up? Review these strategies before testing begins:
• Knowing how to approach different kinds of questions will help her score higher. For instance, on multiple-‐choice sections, she could cover up the answers while she reads the question. If the answer she thought of is listed and the other options don’t make more sense, she can be pretty confident she’s right.
• Have your child find out whether she’ll lose points for wrong answers. If not, it’s best to guess. Also, if scrap paper is allowed, she can use it to work out problem and to keep her place on the answer sheet.
The Box Top for Education program is an easy way
for you to help support our school every time you
shop for groceries. Clip Box Tops for hundreds of
your favorite products and have your child bring
them into school. Each Box Top coupon is worth 10¢.
