Solvay Why a Research Center in China ?
• China’s dynamic market with 1.3 Billion people
• Strong growth : GDP ~ 7% /year ( New “normal”)
• Environmental challenges calls for solutions ! - Complex by nature - Requires multi-partner approach
• Solvay’s Business entities need R&D support - for the development of longer term solutions - for eco-efficient projects
• Huge talent pool in China. People are key to success

Example : Computational chemistry for chemistry and catalysis Strong support for Green Chemistry at E2P2L
Typical R&D problems • Understand trends in reactivity • Estimate feasibility of reactions • Predict selectivity of reactions • Catalyst design
Computational chemistry at E2P2L • 1 full-time expert • Network of internal and external academic partners
(ENS Lyon, Sautet group) • local HPC hardware
Key benefits • Accelerate decision-making: go / no-go, estimates • Test “pen-and-paper” hypotheses • Provide rational input / candidates for synthesis • Not replace but limit experimental time + cost

• Choose a good Location. Shanghai is one of them ! - Very good infra-structure, Solvay site not too far from Shanghai’s city center (about 1 hour) - Strong university landscape (ECUST, ECNU, Fudan…) - Long presence of Solvay in China and Shanghai (30 years) - Proximity to our customers and production units
• IP: Secure Research results (PCT patent filing), then publish in academic journals ! - Requires good management of contracts up-front. E2P2: 6 partner agreement. - Early and constant involvement of Intellectual Assets experts for fair share of IP.
• Building trust among partners is essential ! - Solvay experience : To build up the E2P2 lab, our established partner ENS Lyon initiated contacts
• Fundings can be a good mean to achieve financial leverage - Consider different sources. From partners, regional, foreign programs,….
• HR : People/Access to talents is paramount for success. - Build an attractive working environment for young talents (projects, career perspective,..)
- Our international team and green break-through subjects attracts talents !
Lessons learned and Challenges to be in China We need to adapt to the Chinese Environment
