The E-Student: Going Paperless Instructional Unit


A. Warm-Up The following image shows that a generation born with technology is unaware of how learning was done in the past.

Question to ponder: Why is it important to learn about the history of learning and communication tools?


B. Goal and Objectives Goal: E-learning students from the University of Texas at Brownsville who complete this instructional unit will be able to create an assignment using multiple mobile applications by (1) identifying historical learning and communication techniques to show the evolution of paperless learning, (2) analyzing pros and cons of traditional paper learning tools and comparing with mobile technology, (3) surveying mobile applications used as learning tools, and (4) creating an infographic using several mobile applications. Objectives:

1. Given a web-based presentation about learning techniques from different periods of communication and education history through a mobile device, students will identify various learning tools in each historical era correctly at least 80% of the time.

2. Given a web-based presentation through a mobile device about the advantages and disadvantages of traditional paper tools and mobile technology, students will compare traditional learning tools with mobile technology with at least 80% accuracy.

3. Given a web-based presentation through a mobile device about Google Docs, students will identify the application's important note-taking features correctly at least 80% of the time.

4. Given a web-based demonstration of creating an infographic with the mobile application, Autodesk Sketchbook, students will demonstrate drawing skills, insert an image, and save an infographic with at least 80% accuracy.


C. Prerequisites Before starting this instructional unit, you must first own a mobile device that is used frequently enough that you are comfortable navigating its different menus, screens, and various applications. Secondly, you must also know where to retrieve new applications as this instructional unit will be asking learners to download specific ones to complete this unit. Please note that this instructional unit has been designed with flexibility in mind, so it is understood that not all students will own the same mobile device. That said, please select the best answer to the following two questions.

Independent Practice Instructions: Utilizing Handout #4 as a guide, please create an infographic using four mobile applications; a digital camera app, Google Chrome, Google Docs, and Autodesk Sketchbook. Deliverables: The image file taken, source website used from Google Chrome, Google Doc file, and the final infographic file.
