3MICHAELMAS 2018

For those of you who have just arrived at Durham University, many congratulations on your recent results, and a very warm welcome to the Durham Union Society. The best years of your lives are ahead of you - what better way of spending them than here with us. To our returners, I hope you had an enjoyable summer break, and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Unique to Durham, Oxford and Cambridge, the Union Society fulfils several different functions. We provide students with the oppor tunity to meet, listen to and engage with an incredibly diverse range of leading figures from all areas of public life. This is done through a host of weekly addresses, and of course our Friday night debates, where we consider the most pressing issues of the day. This term we have debate motions ranging from whether there is a ‘Liberal Media bias’, to whether the United Kingdom is Less United than Ever. Our first address, Dr Kate Hudson (General Secretary of the CND) and our first debate of term, on the motion ‘This House Would Decriminalise Drugs’, are open to all students, not just members of the Union. This will put Peter Hitchens, Dr Fiona Godlee and Crispin Blunt MP amongst others, all head to head.

In recent years the Union has been for tunate to host speakers ranging from Boris Johnson, Nick Clegg and David Miliband, to Jeremy Vine and Anastasia Lin. This term we also have an exciting lineup of speakers, including Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Alistair Carmichael, the OC Sandhurst and many more. A full listing of speakers can be found later in the brochure, but be prepared for even more names to be announced...

Our Union is more than just a debating club - our Society is much like a college, an environment for socialising and lifetime friendships. With over 800 Freshers signing up to the Union each year, attending Durham Union socials as a Fresher is a unique way to meet like-minded people and make friends with those from different colleges and courses. This term we will host our annual Freshers’ Welcome Social, a themed social with the chance to dress to impress (prizes available), a Christmas Social, and of course our 1920’s themed Ball, which will be held at the magnificent Beamish Hall. Our socials are held in the Union’s private members club, situated at 24 North Bailey. Membership of the Union also gives you the oppor tunity to live and work in the 24 North Bailey Club. Indeed, we are the only society at Durham University to have our own private venue.

The Durham Union also offers one of the globe’s finest student debating programmes for those who want to learn the ar t of debating as a novice or hone their skills with our world-class debating squad. You can of course also become involved in the running of the society through committees and officer positions, which is great for your CV, and a highly rewarding way to use your free time as a student.

It is fair to say that it is hard to gain the true Durham experience without membership of the Union! I very much look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events.

Very best wishes,.

27MICHAELMAS 2018

24 North Bailey Club (commonly known as ‘24s’) is one of the Durham Union’s most cherished assets. No other student society at the University can claim to have its own private venue, with a bar, garden, Reading Room and living accommodation for Union members.

It is the social hub of our society. Every evening dozens of our members come here to relax and enjoy the Union’s incredibly cheap drinks! College bars are brilliant, but being situated in the very centre of Durham and unaffiliated to any college, the 24s bar is an excellent place to meet up with friends from all over the University. Unlike most college bars it also has a huge beer garden, and the charm of 24s lends it a great atmosphere — the bar is decorated with memorabilia from past events, and after our evening events it is not uncommon that speakers make a visit to the bar, so you never know who you might meet! All in all, it is truly one of the best student bars in Durham.

Bar EventsIn addition to our regular free social events, the bar holds its own regular events. Every other week on a Sunday night there is a Pub Quiz (in which winning teams are rewarded with a prize), and other events in recent terms have included our famous ‘Open Mic Nights’.

Opening Hours: Sunday - Thursday: 8:30-11:30pmFriday & Saturday: 8:30pm-12:00am

StudentDEBATING

For those who would like to try debating, the Durham Union Society also has an excellent competitive squad. Last year we were home to the third best team in the world, as well as winning many competitions at home in the UK. Debating is an excellent way to develop your confidence in speaking, and looks brilliant on a CV.

Nearly every week we send students across the country to compete on behalf of Durham. We also compete at the World and European Debating Championships - recently this has included travel to Malaysia, Greece, Estonia, Poland, India, Mexico and many more places. This winter, we will be sending teams to the Worlds in Cape Town! Our training program is one of the best in the UK.

We run competitive speaking training at a novice, intermediate, and advanced level - so whatever your experience is, we would love to have you! Some of Durham’s most successful speakers arrived on campus having never debated at all.

On Thursday, October 11th we will be hosting

a launch to the competitive debating year in the beautiful Debating Chamber in the Pemberton Buildings on Palace Green. Come by at 7:00 pm if you think that competitive debating could be for you!

As well as fielding our own competitive squads, Durham hosts several prestigious debating competitions throughout the year. This is an excellent opportunity to help to run large events, judge debates and watch some of the best debaters in Europe compete against each other. Notably, we also host the largest residential schools debating competition in the world in March.

We look forward to seeing you at DU Debating!

House Committee Responsible for taking care of the logistical operations that accompany each of our events.

3130 DURHAM UNION MICHAELMAS 2018

President’s Thanks

Organising a term at the Durham Union is challenging. Organising a Michaelmas term is a nightmare (if you get enough time to sleep). Completing this monumental task wouldn’t have been possible without blood, sweat and tears from an incredibly dedicated and talented team of individuals, with many of them instrumental to the success of this term.

Sharon, our Office Manager, thank you for constantly providing direction and advice, steering the Union through choppy waters, making sure life for me has been relatively plain sailing. Without your presence over the years, the Union would not be in the position it is now: for that we are all incredibly grateful. Thank you also to Alison for all your hard work in the office, and to our Bar Manager, Donna, for doing the unenviable task of monitoring Durham’s most popular student bar*. Sue - our indispensable housekeeper - thank you for your tireless work, as well as putting up with the inevitable amount of mess I shall make in 24s! Guidance in this job is invaluable; the major blessing of my tenure has been the ability to draw on the knowledge of the recently departed ‘old guard’ of the Union. Our esteemed former Presidents: George Jackson, Tom Harwood, Daniel Cohen, Jack Gilmore and Ollie Lewis (Jonty Bayliss is my only former Presidential ‘contact’ now). Each and every single one of you has provided me with sage advice, as well as much mirth at your unique quirks. Each of your tenures has provided me with a solid platform to work from; you shall all be missed not only as teachers, but as friends.

Many thanks to my Presidential Campaign Team, who helped me to a truly staggering mandate back in Epiphany; I hold Alastair Sledge, Brodie Summerfield, Dan Egglestone, Giacomo Wong, Helen Paton, James Plaut, Lucy Woodruff, Rhodri Sheldrake-Davies, Sabrina Steuer, Sam Johnson-Audini, Samrat Pasriccha, Sara Kuzsynski, Sarina Rivlin-Sanders, Victor Gutierrez and Yasmin Rufo personally responsible for my election. You know who to blame folks.

It wouldn’t have been possible to have the quantity and quality of speakers that we’ve hosted this term if it weren’t for the hours put in by my President’s Committee, who have played an indispensable role in the speaker recruitment process. Adam Forshaw,

Louise Pi, Matthew Mcinally, Suleiman Sacranie, Samrat Pasriccha, Yasmin Rufo and especially Mr Alastair ‘Sledgehammer’ Sledge, thank you! My thanks must also go to Sara Kuzsynski, my Speakers’ Secretary, for her commitment to finding excellent speakers, whilst juggling her many other roles!

Sara Kuzsynski, I’ve never been more excited for socials, your work so far with our 20’s and 80’s themed socials has put me in the dancing mood! Rahul Prakash, thank you for minuting all our meetings and making it look like an easy task, and to Jack Perry for doing much the same, and also for sending out our weekly emails and keeping the website up to date. With your promotions, we have two of the finest officers in recent Union history - it’s safe to say the Union will survive another year at least! Samrat, thanks to you and to House Committee for ensuring all our events run smoothly on the ground. Thanks also to Oskar Kit Eyers and Charlie Cowen for being so willing to lend a hand over the summer with various ‘artistic projects’.

Thank you to Martha Muir, Rosie Vorri and Maddy Copley for stewarding Durham’s outstanding competitive student debaters and ensuring we continue to offer one of the finest student debating programmes in the world. Your success on an international stage is just another example of how talented our members are - we are excited to see what we can achieve this year.

Rhodri Sheldrake Davies, we shall miss you whilst on sabbatical, keep in contact. Dan Egglestone - keep being a genius in 24’s; don’t let the alcohol run dry! Sarina Rivlin-Sanders, our Treasurer and brightest mind in the Union, I hope to see plenty of savings during your tenure (although not too much)! Thanks to Lucy Woodruff for her sponsorship work, as well as Alice Lassman (Durham’s most famous economist) for stepping in to bring in more Union income. Finally, to one of my closest friends, Rahul. Very best of luck planning your upcoming term as President.
