GOD’S SOVEREIGNITY OVER DISABILITY
Most of us often wonder and ask
“Why does God allow suffering?”
Scripture tells us in Ephesians 1:11
that he “works out everything ac-
cording to the counsel of his will.”
God’s plans declare his sovereign
control over every situation and
over all events in our lives. When
Moses questioned his own ability to speak for God, the Lord said to him, “Who has
made man’s mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have
not I, the Lord?” (Exodus 4:11). God doesn't allow suffering to exist to enjoy it rather
he allows suffering to exist in order to serve his own purposes.
The question “Why did God create suffering?” doesn't really matter but the only thing
that matters is how we respond to it. In Philippians 1:29, the Bible tells us to expect
suffering : “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in
him but also to suffer for him.”
Joni Eareckson Tada in her book: “Beyond suffering” writes: After many years of
suffering, I have concluded that God allows one form of evil, suffering to expose an-
other form of evil. God allows affliction to rip all of that away so that we can be sure
if our hearts hurt for someone, God felt that pain first. Our souls are strengthened
through suffering. To know God better, we must know our suffering better and as we
do we become less “me” focused and more God focused.

WHEELCHAIR DISTRIBUTION
Wheelchair distribution program was conducted at Duncan Hospital from 22nd to 27th October in collab-
oration with Joni and friends, US. The distribution started with the volunteers orientation in the PMR depart-ment. A total of 100 wheelchairs and a few crutches were distributed on different days from 22nd-26th October.
Every recipient was accompanied by a local missionary and a relative. People had come from different parts of East and West Champaran district, Bihar to receive the wheelchairs. The remarkable point of this distribu-tion was that every wheelchair was customized and repaired at the site, to meet the recipient’s require-ments and comfortability. To make sure that the recipients practice well and propel the wheelchair themselves, a special wheelchair training team took efforts to train them on ramps, stairs and rough terrains with or without relatives’ sup-port. A group of therapists were present to assess and provide the best mobility aids for the recipients. A special team of expert mechanics were ready at the site, to ensure the best fitting of the wheelchair. Each recipient was counselled to gain confidence to participate in the community. Counsellors also shared God’s love with individuals and their families. It was amazing to see the joy and happiness after receiving wheelchairs. Hospital staff also actively participated by volunteering their time and efforts during distribu-tion. The Joni and friends team was equipped with experienced therapists, mechanics and nurses. Volun-teers from other EHA units also gave their contributions as therapists and mechanics. The distribution ended with a thanksgiving prayer followed by dinner on the 27th October. We praise God for gloriously leading us throughout the planning, preparation and distribution period. As we wait for another 220 wheelchairs on the way to Raxaul . We request you to pray for further distribution, planning and execu-tion.

HEROES ON WHEELS - Ravi and Shailesh
Mr. Ravi Kumar is a 26 year old accountant cum graphic designer from
Raxaul, Bihar. He was rehabilitated at Duncan Hospital in the year 2017
after sustaining a spinal cord injury. With an extrovert and cheerful person-
ality, he is always ready to give his time for the people in need specially for
the people with spinal cord injury. Ravi is also a very good poet. In Septem-
ber he took part in Kotak Half mararthon (21km) using wheelchair and was
able to finish in 02:42.
Recently he participated in the 5th National Wheelchair Basketball Champi-
onship representing the state of Bihar, without any professional coaching
or financial support.
His cheerful presence during the wheelchair distribution deeply encour-
aged the team and the recipients. His poem touched all of our hearts.
Mr. Shailesh Kumar is a roving pan India peer mentor,
role model and skills trainer for spinal cord injury who vis-
its Duncan Hospital time to time motivating and training
group of persons with spinal cord injury. During the wheel-
chair distribution week, he volunteered to encourage the
recipients and to train them on wheel chair skills. His pres-
ence greatly inspired the team and influenced the recipi-
ents as they went back with their own wheelchairs.
Shailesh has worked extremely hard on not just his fitness
and strength but also developing expertise in living well
with spinal cord injury. Hailing from a small village near
Gaya in Bihar, in just 5 years since his injury, Shailesh ’s
work touches the lives of over 2000 persons with spinal
cord injury in various ways.
He is India's fastest half marathon runner using wheelchair. He is also a wheelchair basketball player, swim-
mer and scuba diver. He networks with people across India via home visits, telephone calls and exclusive use
of social media to impart skills and awareness programs. His effort was remarkable in successfully forming a
wheelchair basketball team representing Bihar state for the first time and qualifying the quarterfinals in the
5th National wheelchair basketball. We thank Shailesh Kumar for his availability and volunteering time and
effort to our hospital and the community thus far.
