The California Republican Party (CRP) held itsSpring Convention in Sacramento three weeksago. With hopes that the event would resolve theproblems of a 2010 sweep of statewide ofces,Chairman Ron Nehring wrote that the eventwould be an introduction into Presidential politics.

That old game has been playing since November2010.

The convention was also an event used forpolitical cover among Republicans willing to jumpship on Jerry Brown ʼs tax extension plan.Whether it will actually work out: not likely.Republican voters in the various legislativedistricts have great memories, especially with thehelp of the California Republican Assembly andPACs that are staking out ʻweak ʼ Republicans for2012.

The CRP has been headed on a collision coursewith irrelevance in the state. With voterregistration for Republicans at 33% in 2008,compared to 41% for Democrats and 20%registered Decline-to-State, there are plenty of

problems connecting with the electoratestatewide.

What will it take for the California RepublicanParty to regain relevance, ofces and voters?

A game change.

WINNING A MAJORITY

There are plenty of ghts that CaliforniaRepublicans can play. While they hold no majorityin any deliberative body (not even in theCalifornia Congressional delegation), the 2011redistricting results hold good things forRepublican areas (Central Valley and SouthernCalifornia) that have major gains in the Census.

Winning over a majority in a body of the State

legislature isnʼ

t likely with Jerry Brown in asGovernor. The main reason: Brown is cutting asmuch as Republicans would; Even if Republicanstook over in the Assembly or Senate, they wouldgo after public employee unions, citing the needto cut down on expenses to the state.

Reggie DeLeon, known on Facebook as JimBean, became known to many Fresnans as “the

man with many causes.” First, DeLeon helpedFresno bolster its numbers against Salt Lake Cityin Walmart ʼs Fighting Hunger contest. Thousandsof posts and just over 2,000 friends later, DeLeonhas helped aid numerous causes andorganizations needing an online presence viasocial networking.

Yesterday, DeLeon went from online communityorganizer to a concerned citizen looking out forone of Clovis ʼ own. Friday, ABC 30 reported a

story about a 1960s Ford Mustang Fastback thatwas stolen from Buchanan High School. One daylater, Facebook ʼs Jim Bean would be the personresponsible for its return after spotting it afterwatching the news reel on Facebook.

DeLeon was one of two people who saw the carbefore it was returned to Buchanan High student

Chad Winters.Along with helping aide community events andrallies, DeLeon is a declared candidate forPresident of the Associated Student Governmentat Fresno City College.

If President, DeLeon said he would stressconnectivity with students as crucial to actuallyrepresenting them.

“I̓ve met so many people who have no idea whoour current President is or where to nd him,” hesaid.

It seems that Jim Bean has plenty of work cut outfor him as he helps his school and the communityin nearly any capacity.

baseball, baseball and, oh wait, baseball.

Last week, the Giants had a torturous start to theirtitle defense, nishing their rst series of theseason in last place in the NL West.

This week, the Grizzlies return to ChukchansiPark after having two of their top prospectshelping the mother ship win the Fall Classic. Withnew, and old, faces, the Grizzlies are ready foraction in downtown Fresno.

The Grizzlies ʼ top Spring Training prospectBrandon Belt was picked up by the Giantsoutright, debuting on Opening Day in LosAngeles.

But that doesn ʼt mean that the Grizzlies don ʼthave good prospects for 2011. During theGrizzlies Media Day 2011, I had the opportunity tomeet with some Grizzlies

The Tank Engine

Spotted around the clubhouse with an iPad inhand and Beats by Dre covering his ears, Thomas“T-Daddy” Neal, also known as Thomas the TankEngine, is quite a techie. He ʼs got his Twitteraccount ( @TDaddyNeal ) and he ʼs working on amo-hawk (the Minor League version of thebeard?).

Neal was excited to jump up to Triple-A and getworking towards the Major League. As theyoungest guy on the team, Neal was able to learnquite a bit from the multi-year veterans at theGrizzlies.

After saying that, veteran relief pitcher AlexHinshaw pantsed him. He the stated that beingthe youngest does make him vulnerable topranks.

Overall, Neal is a player to keep your eyes on

during the new season.

Bond, Brock Bond

Brock Bond is a returner to the Fresno Grizzlies. After the Grizzlies didn ʼt make the playoffs, takingsecond in the PCL, Bond took a month off frombaseball and headed back to Mizzou (Universityof Missouri) to nish up his undergraduatedegree. Now a Tiger alum, Bond holds aBachelor ʼs Degree in Sports Therapy.

On the eld, of course, Bond is prepared fornearly anything. Having played second and thirdbase along with left eld, Bond said he ʼs ready toplay nearly any position, except pitcher.

“Last season I was third in line to play catcher,”Bond said, “If the back-up guy was injured, I ʼd bein to catch.”

On Deck

Not a player, but eyes are on Coach SteveDecker. In his second season, Decker has someexpectations to live up to after leading theGrizzlies through a great season. Most of the2010 season, the Grizzlies were able to hold the

rst place spot in the PCL. Toward the end of theseason, without some star players, the Grizzliesfell to second.

For Decker, however, this season isn ʼt lastseason. There ʼs no Madison Bumgarner or BusterPosey on the lineup.

While many people inside the organization knowthat 2011 isn ʼt 2010, fans might not. They mightexpect the spectacular start to the season that theGrizzlies had last year.

The Grizzlies, however, could surprise Fresnoand bring out great returns on the season.

A majority: out of the realm of possibility for thenext four to eight years (probably more).

TAKING BACK A SENATE SEAT

This is more likely, and a good target forCalifornia Republicans looking to win. However, they missed a great opportunity in 2010 againstBarbara Boxer.

With a generally lower approval rating, and manyless achievements in the Senate, Republicansshould have been able to respond with acandidate with the muscle (and stomach) to takeon a weaker opponent.

Carly Fiorina almost did that, or so the pre-election polls thought she would.

Where did Carly fail? She didn ʼt get enoughNRSC support for her general election campaign.California should be a high priority for the Senate, and the NRSC has usually fundraised inCalifornia and dropped it in races in SouthCarolina.

The Carly-Barbara ght should have been theScott Brown election of the West, a strongRepublican insurgency in California. But it didn ʼthappen because of major lack of funds andsupport.

In 2012, two questions arise: Who will run againstDianne Feinstein (given that she does not retire)and Will they win?

Both are tough questions to answer. The rst isconsiderably easier: Don ʼt consider Housemembers. House GOP Whip Kevin McCarthy isgetting used to the high life and doesn ʼt have thetime nor the name identication to get into therace. Darrell Issa is a major fundraiser and toopolarizing for a bid for the Senate seat.

However, Steve Poizner ʼs return to California

politics could be for the Senate seat; somethinghe could win if he ran as a conservative in theprimary and a moderate in the general.

Winning against Feinstein; that ʼs a tough breakthat pollsters will have to gure out.

BUILDING UP THE PARTY

The CRP fails as a party organization.

From its lack of slate mailers for candidates to itslack of strategy in the 2010 ghts for Sacramentoand Washington, the Republican Party causedsome very preventable losses.

Consider Steve Cooley, Los AngelesCounty District Attorney, known by manyCalifornians as Attorney General Kamala Harris ʼsopponent in November. Cooley could have beenthe single Republican statewide ofcer elected in2010 had the CRP sent out slate mailers to votersand put more focus on the race and its impact onProp. 8 and other legal issues the statewould face.

Instead, California Republicans are stuck with anAttorney General who won ʼt defend the law

THE RECORD 5

Retooling the Calif. GOPContinued from page 5

passed by voters in 2008.

Even worse, more inuential than the CRP is theCalifornia Republican Assembly (the conservativewing of California Republican organization). It puts many members of the State Legislature ina tough position with voting choices and targetsthem during elections for failed votes.

While the CRA operates effectively as an interestgroup organization, it kills the party organizationof the CRP. Given that the CRA isn ʼt going to

change ways, the CRP needs to grow abackbone and begin to work more efciently inadvocating its positions and placing its interestsfront and center to voters, candidates and electedofcials.

THE THORN IN THE ELEPHANT ʼ S SIDE

Is the Tea Party. California is a state notdominated by Tea Party activists. Due, in part, tothe lackluster that goes with Sarah Palin ʼs bandof conservative rufans, the Tea Party hasn ʼtcaught on with many Republicans in the state. While the conservative areas of California dohave Tea Parties, they hold little to no real powerin electing ofcials (See Rep. Jeff Denham astextbook establishment Republican).

However, the Tea Party movement has been a

thorn in the side of the California RepublicanParty. From the heat-of-the-moment creation ofthe Taxpayer ʼs Caucus in the CaliforniaLegislature to the local organizations, each hasprovided plenty of political re to help and hinderpolitical issues necessary to big victories at thepolls.

At the Spring Convention, top Tea Partiers beganto slap down the notion of the CRP endorsingcandidates during primaries.

This is just one of various problems that have andwill arise from the Tea Party ʼs small presence inCalifornia. Much like the support for Sarah Palin(hovering around 30% or lower), the Tea Partycomprises somewhere near 30% of CaliforniaRepublicans, making it small yet powerful.

Given this, there ʼs a case to be made for thedirection of California Republican voters. Shouldthe party swing right with the 30% in the Tea

Party movement or stay more toward the centerand embrace independents seeking to ock fromDemocratic mishaps in Federal and Statepolitics?

Over the next four to eight years, we ʼll nd outwhat moves the party organization makes.

THE RECORD 5

Preparing for 2012

Mississipi Gov. Haley Barbour (L) spokeat the 2011 California RepublicanConvention. Barbour is considered oneof a number of Presidential hopefuls inthe 2012 election. He, along withprospective candidate, AmbassadorJohn Bolton, spoke in Sacramento.

I̓ ve had it.

Fresno may be drunkest, fourteenth mostsexually active, but we are not, ARE NOT the95th least socially networked city in the US. I canprove it.

I̓ ve gotten extraordinarily sick of Men ̓ s Health Magazine ʼs lists of cities (like the perpetual badpenny). Less of a science, more like a set ofDavid Letterman Top 10s, Men ̓ s Health has setup Fresno for more and more ridicule.

So rather than responding to Men ̓ s Health with adifferent magazine lled with random guys andtheir tips for a better sex life (and those reallyannoying Subscriber card-inserts), I ʼm going todeal with the guys mag toe-to-toe.

Fresno is, contrary to Men ̓ s Health ʻs belief, oneof the most active cities on the web. With webcelebrities and a growing community started onthe web, Fresno is more on the social networkingtrack than other cities.

What Fresno isn ʼt: A Friendster using populationof bulletin-board nerds. Speaking of which, whywould a reputable magazine like Men ̓ s Health ever count the number of Friendster andMySpace users per region? Those are so 1999and 2004, respectively.

And now, there ʼs something to be said for theFeedFresno movement. A purely web-basedgrassroots movement that had TV networksproviding Facebook instructions on valuableairtime. That little diddy had Fresno on the webtalking about why $1 million was the best for ourhunger-ridden city. We united around Jim Beanand were able to not only win $100,000 forourselves, but for Bakerseld, too.

In the words of Ice Cube, Men ̓ s Health : Youbetter check yo self before you wreck yo self.

OPINION 5

The Case for Fresno’s ResiliencyMen’s Health Magazine’s attack on Fresno’s Twitterverse is off-base and offensive.

Despite Men ̓ s Health, Fresno organizesevents around the web, such as TheGreat Fresno Tweetup (above)
