New effects for today’s driversBASF effect pigments create exciting new coatings

We offer a broad range of effect pigments in addition to our color pigment portfolio, allowing automotive and transportation designers almost unlimited creative freedom. BASF effect pigments are available for both interior and exterior applications. The combination with our transparent organic pigments comprises an excellent toolbox to create unique stylings. Continuous efforts in research and development allow us to introduce to our customers the latest innovative effects for differentiation and individualization.

6

The combination of high chroma, extensive brilliance, high opacity and durability in one effect pigment is exceptional. This set of properties is offered for example by our Paliocrom® Brilliant series. These pigments are based on iron-oxide-coated aluminum fl akes and offer a spectrum of colors from golden to orange metallic shades. Combinations with other pigments open up styling opportunities across the entire color palette. The desire for a continuous or “liquid” metal look can be accomplished by using vacuum-metalized pigments (VMPs) from our Metasheen® series. This range of aluminum pigments delivers the ultimate brilliance in metallic coatings and printing inks. Under optimized application conditions the coated metallic effect is comparable to naked metal or vacuum-metalized surfaces.

Screening for new substrates and innovative substrate/coating combinations has led to new effect pigments with improved coloristics compared with the standard grades. Besides our effect pigments based on natural mica and aluminum fl akes, BASF is introducing a new generation of pigments based on synthetic mica. The fi rst member of this family is Glacier™ Frost White, the whitest white effect pigment, offering new styling perspectives for all color shades. To fulfi ll the highest coloristic demands the Lumina® Royal series surpasses even the high chroma level of the standard Lumina® effect pigments. The fi rst product in this new generation of technically advanced mica pigments is Lumina® Royal Blue which offers the highest intensity, brightness, luster and color purity compared to any other blue effect pigment currently available in the market.

Intense colors, maximum performanceHigh value achieved by excellence in pigment properties

BASF offers an unequaled portfolio of high-performance color pigments across the full color space. With innovative products, we support our customers to differentiate with inspirational colors and improved process effi ciency thanks to optimized secondary properties designed for use in modern paint systems.

7

Pigments with increased intrinsic hiding power open up new options for the coating process. One example is Irgazin® Red L 4010 HD (old: Irgazin® DPP Red Ultra Opaque) facilitating reduced layer thicknesses in the solid red color area. Alternately, for the same opacity the pigment concentration in the coating can be reduced thereby improving fi lm properties such as stone-chip performance.

Good rheological behavior of pigments is of high importance for effi cient processability. Irgazin® Rubine L 4020 (old: Irgazin® DPP Rubine TRI), for example, features a latest-generation surface modifi cation and can offer up to 100 % higher pigment loadings in mill base formulations compared to standard grades of the same pigment chemistry.

High color strength allows our customers to reduce the pigment load in their formulations. The latest example of a pigment with strongly improved color strength is the new Heliogen® Blue EH 1600 (L 6600 F). It is a P.B. 15:6 copper

phthalocyanine blue pigment with enhanced coloristic performance and excellent secondary properties. Besides the high color strength it offers a neutral color fl op, high transparency and improved chroma.

Pigments with high chroma generate exciting styling options. In the recent past, a broad variety of innovative products such as Irgazin® Orange L 2950 (old: Irgazin® DPP Cosmoray Orange) creates highly durable colors that have never previously been achievable in automotive and industrial coatings.

Reducing solar warmingAdvanced solutions for solar heat management

The heating effect of the sun is not just an inconvenience on hot days. As well as passenger comfort, solar heat can directly affect fuel consumption and engine emissions as air conditioning systems struggle to control the increasing temperature. In addition, as new automotive technologies such as electric cars develop, solar heat build-up can play a signifi cant role in the overall vehicle effi ciency.

8

In sunny conditions, all vehicles heat up to a lesser or greater degree. This is more obvious in dark-colored vehicles, but the effect is present in almost all colors. The less a vehicle heats up, the less there is a need to cool it, reducing the vehicle’s energy consumption. To meet this requirement, functional pigments were created that reduce heat build-up in all surface coatings for most colors, whether in cars, buses, trucks, trains or aircraft. These solutions are not only used to avoid excessive overheating in vehicles with dark exterior and interior colors as virtually all colors contain at least a small percentage of black. Through replacement of the carbon black pigment the functional heat-management pigments are invaluable in reducing heat build-up in lighter colored surfaces and coatings, too. BASF can work with you to determine the most suitable pigmentation and layer build-up to create coolness properties for most given colors and substrates.

Functional pigments for heat management solutions, BASF’s Paliogen® Black L 0086 and Sicopal® Black L 0095 are used to formulate dark shades which achieve lower heat absorption than conventional pigmentations based on carbon black. In the near-infrared range, the substrate has a direct impact on refl ectance performance. Paliogen® Black L 0086 is near-infrared non-absorbing (NIRnA) and is suitable for cool paints on refl ective substrates or in combination with refl ective pigments. For black shades, it achieves up to 42 % total solar refl ectance (TSR).A second alternative offered by BASF is the inorganic pigment Sicopal® Black L 0095. The refl ectance curves clearly show that this is a near-infrared-refl ective pigment and is therefore partially hiding in the NIR range. The TSR improvement for black shades is up to 30 %.
