Dear Hanes Parents,
Thank you for your wonderful support of Hanes and the PTSA. We greatly appreciate all
of the time and effort you give to the school. We are looking forward to the upcoming spring
months and all of the terrific activities planned as the school year begins to wind down.
Thank you to everyone who has given to the Direct Donations Fundraiser this year. Your
donations are given to the school through the Curriculum Enhancement Fund, which is utilized
for Core Class needs, Teacher Grants and the support of various afterschool activities including
STEM clubs and Athletics. If you have not already given a direct donation, it is not too late!
Please see the pledge form on page 5 to make your contribution. Your donations are a great tax-‐
deductible way to help your children and Hanes Magnet School.
Sincerely yours,
Michelle Thetford, President and Melissa Westendorff, Treasurer
Wanting to help at Hanes? Put End-‐of-‐Grade testing time (End of May) on your calendar because proctors are needed. This may not be the most exciting volunteer task, but it is invaluable to our school. Proctors are typically needed for a few hours, beginning around 8:00am. Look for more information on how to receive proctor training and get on the schedule.

Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools offer interscholastic sports for 7th and 8th graders at the middle school level. At Hanes our students can participate in volleyball, basketball, track, cheerleading, and soccer. A physical and participation form is required to tryout! A link to the form can be found on the Hanes web site under Athletics tab, or you can use the following address: http://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/cms/lib/NC01001395/Centricity/Domain/1818/WSFCS%20Middle%20School%20Participation%20Form%2010-‐11.pdf

Parents of current (7th grade) and future (6th grade) Basketball and/or Volleyball players • Do you want to be more involved in the Hanes Athletic program? • Do you want to support your child and the Hanes teams? • Are you looking for a way to attend as many home games as you can?
Then think about volunteering to be the 7th or 8th grade PTSA Athletic Liaison (depending on which grade your child is in) for next year. Responsibilities include writing the Sports Zone, managing the concessions at the home volleyball and basketball games, and throwing the end of the year Athletic Celebration (ice cream party) at school. It is a great way to volunteer for the PTSA and be involved in your child’s athletic activities. Contact Pam Ball if you are interested (761-1342) and say “Yes”!

As we start our last half of the year, I want to remind students and parents of a few things:
• Make sure that your child is returning his/her books in a timely manner. We currently have several students with overdue books.
• If your student is working on a project at home and is using a newer version of MS Office (2007 or above), please make sure that the file is saved as a 97-‐2003 version. The computers at Hanes are using a 2003 version of MS Office and they cannot read later versions.
• Help your child to effective research on his/her projects by suggesting that they use DESTINY online card catalog. This can be accessed through the Media Center Page and has wonderful resources (online encyclopedias, EBSCO database of periodicals and books, etc.) that can be used at home.

Free Money for Hanes Free Money for Hanes is Just a Click Away
In addition to clipping physical BoxTops, now you can click and earn money for Hanes, too! The BoxTops for Education folks are providing a new way for us to instantly earn cash for our school. Here’s how:
1. Register with the Box Tops for Education website (www.boxtops4education.com) or if you are already a member, simply log in.
2. Click on the “EARN” tab and then on the “Click and Earn” drop-‐down.
3. Click on any of the different activities available. Maybe you’ll view a short video, take a quiz, download some coupons or provide your opinion on a product. For every activity you complete, Hanes is automatically credited and those electronic credits mean cash for our school.
So, keep on clippin’ but also start clickin’! Take a few minutes to share your valuable opinion and General Mills will give Hanes 10 cents for every credit you earn. You can participate in each eBoxTops activity once and they will be adding new activities as the program continues to grow. So be sure to visit often to help our school’s earnings grow even faster.
Friday, March 16th afterschool in the Hanes M. S. Gymnasium.
Please drop off your gently-‐used SMOD clothes for donation during school hours, Mar. 1-‐15th. Bins will be located outside the front office. Proceeds from the sale will go to the field-‐trip fund, which provides need-‐based scholarships for grade-‐level field trips.
If you are interested in volunteering (and we will need lots) please complete this form and return it to school with your

STEM Clubs
Hanes currently offers many afterschool STEM clubs and we are considering expanding the list of clubs offered. Currently many parents help sponsor these clubs and to sustain and expand these clubs we need parent help.
This year we offered these clubs for our afterschool STEM program: • Team America Rocketry Challenge • FIRST Lego League • Science Olympiad • Math Club • Technology Student Association • Sea Perch
To learn more about our STEM clubs, visit: http://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/domain/1907.
We are considering adding Odyssey of the Mind and Future Cities to the list for next year. The clubs usually meet one day a week for one hour during 3-‐5 months of the year. Hanes will provide any necessary training for parent volunteers. To learn more about STEM clubs or becoming involved in current or new clubs, contact Andy Kraft at [email protected].

Gotcha! Awards
Gotcha!
Teachers are recognizing these students for their positive behavior.
Congratulations to our students who were caught, “Gotcha!”, going above and beyond.
Team Name: Apollo, 6th Grade Names of Teachers Recognizing Student: Ms. Bullock, Ms. Hutchison, Mr. Lalonde, Ms. Mickey, Ms. Stewart Student’s Name: Bear Higgins Bear found another student’s valve oil while he was in P.E. class. He diligently sought out the owner and returned the oil. Bear, thanks for being so thoughtful and responsible. Team Name: Endeavour, 6th Grade Name of Teacher Recognizing Student: Mrs. Laughinghouse Student’s Name: Jeremy Richburg Someone left trash behind on the table as students were dismissed. No one would admit to leaving the trash behind, but Jeremy graciously volunteered to return and throw the trash away. We are fortunate to have a student with Jeremy’s maturity on our team. Team Name: Navigator, 7th Grade Name of Teacher Recognizing Student: Mrs. Taylor Student’s Name: Ray Yang Everyday as we leave the pod for lunch, Ray holds the door open for us. This is one example of the kind acts evident on our team each day. Team Name: Encore Team 1, 8th Grade Name of Teacher Recognizing Students: Mrs. Butryn Students’ Names: Roniece Carswell & Jordan Sheets In the art room, these students are constantly helping to clean up after everyone else has made a mess. They never ask for anything in return, when they truly deserve it. Team Name: Encore Team 2, 7th Grade Name of Teacher Recognizing Students: Mrs. James Students’ Names: Brayan Ceballos & Sheyla Flores On the last day of computer time, the students were working on a major project. Brayan was unable to log into his account to access the research he had saved. I sent him to the media center to see if they could provide him with assistance in accessing the information, but they could not. Sheyla thought that teachers might be able to access students’ folders on the computer. As a result, she suggested that I log on the computer and search for Brayan’s folder. I was not familiar with this practice of accessing student folders, but I tried it anyway. Thanks to Sheyla, I was able to find Brayan’s folder and his work. Sheyla saved the day for her classmate. Brayan responded to Sheyla’s ingenuity by stating,” You’re smart!”
Congratulations Bear, Jeremy, Ray, Roniece, Jordan, Brayan, and Sheyla!
