Jacob/Israel’s greatest day comes on the
heel of his wounded thigh. We might call
Jacob newly disabled. We might call
Jacob especially enabled. He ran
somewhat cowardly. He limps
courageously.

P A G E 2
The poet Robert Bly wrote that we make our
greatest contributions from our life wounds. We
are each, in some way(s), wounded. We might
consider our wounds our weakness. They may be
the source of embarrassment and even shame.
Bly sees it otherwise.
We recently read the story of our father Jacob
returning home to meet his brother Esau after an
absence of some twenty plus years. Jacob had run
away from home after he finagled the birthright
and blessing from his simpler brother Esau. Jacob
feared for his life and left. He ran so far and fast
he could have won a marathon but he knows one
day he must return. The night before his
rendezvous with destiny, he has a nocturnal
encounter with a masked man who wrestles Jacob
until the dawn. Jacob holds his own with his
assailant who is ready to cry Uncle. Jacob tells
him that he will not ease his hold on this man until
the assailant blesses him. How odd to seek a
blessing from the one who assaults us. Jacob was
on the same wavelength as Bly. The masked man
tells Jacob that he will no longer be called Jacob
but Israel because he is one who wrestles with
G-d. Jacob then lets him go but only to discover
that he had indeed been wounded in his thigh. In
the morning, clearly wounded, he limps to meet
his brother Esau. Jacob/Israel’s greatest day
comes on the heel of his wounded thigh. We
might call Jacob newly disabled. We might call
Jacob especially enabled. Though scared to death
to meet his brother, Jacob can no longer run
away. He is left to limp towards his brother. He
ran somewhat cowardly. He limps courageously.
February is Jewish Disability and Awareness
Month. We will mark our own awareness of its
importance at our first Kabbalat Shabbat service of
the month on February 3rd at 6:00pm. It is one of
the most special Kabbalat Shabbat services of the
year.
I invite us all to come to this Shabbat celebration
not exclusively to empathize with the disability of
others but more so to claim ownership of our
own wounds and disabilities which we may work
hard to cover over. As important to turn our
wounds and disabilities into the gifts and
contributions we can offer to others. I will surely
ask no one to share their own wounds or
disabilities but to personally recognize that none of
us is immune to life’s wounds. It’s just that some
are more apparent than others. Some are more
severe than others. All are real.
I write all of the above with an awareness of my
own life’s wounds. I would like to believe that
because of some wounds/disabilities, I have been
able to develop abilities I can share with others;
meaningful abilities that might otherwise never have
been realized.
Disabilities and inclusion are important to us at
Ohev Shalom all twelve months of the year. We
have an ongoing commitment to Inclusion B’Kavod,
inclusion with respect. We always want to learn
more and so our leaders attend programs and
symposia that are offered. Often, we are pointed
out and looked to as exemplars in this area for
others to learn from us. We are invited to be
presenters for others to learn from our dedicated
work.
Why February, this shortest month of the year for
Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month?
February can be the coldest month of the year
though we’ve already had enough Arctic blasts this
year. But after February comes the spring. The
days grow longer. There is the beginning of
rebirth. The gift of renewal arrives. As Robert Bly
wrote, it is out of our wounds and disabilities that
we make our greatest contributions. While it may
be bad today, there is better yet to come.
For us, disability awareness and inclusion is more
than a one month observance so on all of our
synagogue correspondence, we will continue to
include the words: Ohev Shalom celebrates the
uniqueness of each individual and welcomes diversity
within our sacred community.

P A G E 3
Last month, we celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.
Day - a day each year where we reflect on the life
and achievements of one of America’s greatest
civil rights leaders. In 1994, this day was
reestablished as a “Day of Service”. The MLK Day
of Service is part of United We Serve, an initiative
established by the President encouraging all
Americans to unite together to serve their
communities and give back to help others in need.
Edgar Allen, Founder of Easter Seals, once said
“Your life and mine should not be valued by what
we take, but by what we give.”
We are so fortunate here at Ohev Shalom
because our congregation is filled with members
who give on a daily basis: you give your time, your
talent, and your love to enrich every facet of our
community. You, our volunteers, are an amazing
group of people! Your dedication, vision, and
belief, in this congregation, enhance every service
that we participate in, every event that we have,
every new program that is developed, and every
moment that we share together.
From the small tasks to the much larger
undertakings - this congregation could not run
without the help and dedication of you, our
volunteers. Ohev Shalom thrives because of the
effort that each one of you puts forth every time
you commit yourself to a new venture. Ohev
Shalom is strengthened by each one of you and
your pledge to help make our synagogue a more
beautiful place to come to and be together. Ohev
Shalom flourishes because of your desire to help
preserve our present and secure the future of our
community for future generations.
A wise theologian said, “Do all the good you can, by
all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all
the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the
people you can, as long as you ever can.”
Thank you, to all of our Ohev volunteers - who
continually give all that you can. You are truly
making a difference.
From The President Expanding
Friendships
We plan to celebrate all of
you during a very special
Volunteer Shabbat Morning
Service.
Michael Rabinowitz, Ohev’s
Board Member at Large
overseeing Volunteerism, will
be coordinating this service
honoring our volunteers and
thanking you for all that you
do to make our community a
congregation of tremendous
strength.

The Bible has many references to angels. The
Hebrew word for angel, mal’ach, means
messenger. Some traditional teachings view angels
as the functionaries who carry out G-d’s will.
Jewish folklore sees angels as guardians. Other
interpretations tell us that each mitzvah that we
do creates an angel that serves as a shield and
protection for us. In whatever form and for
whatever purpose angels may exist, one thing is
clear; at Ohev Shalom we have many angels and
one of our most loving and active is Hedy
Hoffman, February’s Congregant of the Month.
Hedy has always been deeply committed to her
Jewish heritage. The daughter of Holocaust
survivors, Hedy has taught Hebrew School at
Ohev. She began her teaching career in Dayton,
Ohio and, while teaching Hebrew School in
Philadelphia, was introduced to the brother of one
of her Gimel students who became her husband,
Neil.
Hedy, Neil, and children Melissa, Josh, and Jamie
moved to Bucks County from Northeast
Philadelphia in 1989, and seeking a Conservative
synagogue that was invested in the community,
joined Ohev Shalom. Since that time the
Hoffmans have celebrated many simchas at Ohev,
including all three children’s B’nai Mitzvot and
Confirmations, the children’s weddings and
grandchildren’s baby namings.
Hedy describes herself as shy, but she has never
shied away from a commitment to Ohev and its
future. Soon after joining the synagogue, Hedy
joined Sisterhood and after attending an art
auction at another shul, she was asked to organize
one at Ohev. Since 1994 Hedy has run eleven
highly successful art auctions and most recently,
the Safrai art show for the synagogue.
Hedy has also been very active as a Sisterhood
leader, serving two years as Co-Vice-President of
Ways and Means and three years as Co-President.
Continuing to demonstrate her love of Sisterhood,
this year Hedy serves as Treasurer and as liaison
and mentor to over thirty Z’havah members. The
mission of Z’havah is to promote and develop future
Sisterhood leaders and Hedy lovingly serves as both
guide and role model for our Z’havah members.
Hedy describes Ohev Shalom as her community and
her Jewish identity. She says, “I love volunteering at
Ohev Shalom in order to enhance and perpetuate
our Jewish community and in turn Ohev Shalom
uplifts my heart and soul.” With five grandchildren
under six years old, and Sisterhood and Z’havah
activities filling her plate, Hedy’s deep love for Ohev
has motivated her to accept another responsibility
as the chair of the Shomrim Campaign – Securing
Our Future that will begin this spring. This unique
initiative will secure Ohev’s future by using
donations as a secured principal, from which
generated interest can be used throughout the years
to fund a variety of programming.
Thank you Hedy, for your commitment to Ohev
Shalom and for being our guardian angel and
congratulations on being named February’s
Congregant of the Month.

I am the youngest of five siblings and I am the only girl. I
have four older brothers and a dog (Bichon Frise) named
Daisy. I’m in the 7th grade at Tamanend Middle School
where I am a High Honor Student.
Activities that I do are hip hop dance which I have been
doing since 2nd grade and I play intramural basketball in
Warrington since 3rd grade. I also am in the band in
school where I play the clarinet. In my free time, I enjoy
hanging out with my friends.
My Hesed Project is Cook For A Friend where I volunteer
to package food in containers and send to people who
cannot cook or prepare food for themselves. I’m glad I’m
able to help those less fortunate than myself.
I would like to thank my Mom and Dad for always
supporting me when I need them and for their
unconditional love. I am also thankful for my brothers
who always are there for me. I also thank Rabbi Perlstein,
Cantor Annelise and Cantor Paul for preparing me for my
Bat Mitzvah.
I look forward to celebrating my Bat Mitzvah with my family and friends!

I am in 7th grade and go to Richboro Middle School in the
Council Rock School District. I started going to pre-school
at Ohev Shalom since I was two years old.
I love to play all different kinds of sports and activities like
basketball, hockey and snowboarding. During the summer, I
go to camp with a lot of my friends from school. I also went
to Camp North Star for three weeks this past summer
which is located in Maine. It was great meeting new people
from all over the country and also from the world there.
For my Bar Mitzvah project, I am doing buddy club at
Richboro Middle School. Buddy club is helping out with
autistic children. During buddy club, there are a lot of
different activities, which are playing games, arts and crafts
and doing other cool activities with these special children.
It’s really rewarding to feel that you’re helping someone. I
also helped collect toys and gifts from my family and friends
for the “Kisses for Kyle” foundation which I found very
rewarding. These gifts were brought to Children’s Hospital
to help cheer up these special kids.
I would really like to thank Cantor Ocanto, Rabbi Perlstein,
Allan Katz and all of the teachers I have had over the years at Hebrew School who helped me prepare for
my Bar Mitzvah. I would also like to thank my Mom, Dad, my brother Jonathan and my whole family for
motivating me for this day. I look forward to having my Bar Mitzvah soon and having a great time
celebrating with my family and friends.

I have been a part of Ohev Shalom since I was
5 years old. I have gained so much from
attending Ohev Shalom Religious School and

My name is Samantha Saks, but most people call
me Sam. I have been going to Ohev since I was
three years old. I attend Holicong Middle School
as a 7th grader and I played on the second doubles
position on the varsity tennis team this year.
Another sport I enjoy is skiing, which I started
when I was four years old in Steamboat, Colorado.
A hobby of mine is watching the Philadelphia Flyers
play ice hockey. I also play the trumpet in my
school’s band.
For my Mitzvah project, I volunteered in a group
called Tennis Buddies, which helps children and
adults who have challenges, such as Down
syndrome, play tennis. It felt rewarding to help
these kids grow as tennis players and help them
follow their passion. I had the opportunity to help
give the children a chance to play tennis, and I grew
by giving back to the community and connecting to
those in need.
I would like to thank my family, Rabbi Perlstein,

Presidents’ Message
February. It’s the shortest month of the year,
some might say with good reason. It’s cold. It’s
really cold. Sometimes it snows … a lot. The
festive Holidays of December (Hanukkah and New
Year’s Eve) are over, taking some of the joy of the
season with them.
Luckily, Sisterhood is deep in the planning stages
of our march to spring with so many good times
to look forward to! Our fabulous yearly Bingo
takes place on March 30th. We love the energy
our members bring to Bingo, and we know this
year will be no exception!
Spring also brings Purim, and Shalach Manot,
Sisterhood wine tasting, book reviews and more.
There is an activity or function for everyone,
perfect for chasing away the winter doldrums.
In the meantime, let’s celebrate February in the
best way we know how. It’s the month of love, so
show your family, your friends, your neighbors and
of course your Sisterhood sisters how grateful you
are to have them in your life with a phone call, a
visit or a hug. Bundle up and come to Ohev and
enjoy the warmth it provides to us all.
B’Shalom,
Linda, Michele and Susan

Men’s Club
2017 promises to be a special year for your Men’s
Club. We have many programs scheduled during
the year as well as a few of our Sunday breakfasts.
In January we had Fox 29’s Hank Flynn speak with
us about the comings and goings in Philadelphia.
His talk was well received and enjoyed by all, as
was Chef Bob’s breakfast. Thanks to all the guys
that came out and helped.
After the breakfast, we met with the Hebrew
School kids to teach about making a Tefillin and
wearing it. More on that next month.
On February 5th we will observe the Annual
World Wide Wrap. Synagogues all over the
world including all the Conservative Shuls in The
United States - and now the Jews in Cuba - will be
participating. Another great reason to come to
the meeting. We will be wearing Tefillin and
helping all our new and old members alike, with
this wonderful tradition.
Also coming up later this month is our Boy’s Nite
Out. Guys only and no agenda for the
conversations.
On April 29th we will have our Men’s Club Shabbat.
It will be very special this year as we will be reading
from the Sefer Haftorah. The Sefer Haftorah travels
around the country and we are pleased that it will
be at Ohev Shalom during the week of the service.
Also in April, we have plans to take our meeting
offsite for a visit to Dad’s Hat. More details later.
You can guess what it is, but it doesn’t go on your
head, unless you’ve had too much. The winner gets
a free ride to the event.
On the cover is a picture taken of all the Ohev
people who came out to celebrate Mike Zimet’s
selection as Man of the Year from Ohev to The
Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs-Mid-Atlantic
Region. Thanks again, Mike.
I sincerely hope to see you at our next event.
Come out, “you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll have a
good time.”
B’Shalom,
Jeff
