DOUGLAS COMMUNITY GAMES GAELIC FOOTBALL – UNDER 10’S FUNDRAISING The Douglas Community Games, Gaelic Football Under 10’s Team Fundraising Committee are currently on a drive to generate sponsorship for the Douglas Under 10’s team who recently, successfully qualified to represent Cork and Munster in the National Finals of the HSE sponsored Community Games on 14th and 15th August in Athlone, Co. Westmeath.There is a significant cost associated with participating in this event e.g. preparing the team, kitting out the team, entry fees, travel and accommodation etc. and the committee are seeking local businesses to support for this event. The Community Games is run by volunteers across the country and has been providing opportunities for children and young people to experience sport over the last 30 years and many children have benefited hugely from same.Any local business interested in supporting the team as they embark on the road to the finals in Athlone can contact Brian Donlon on 087-9369332.Meanwhile a quiz night has been organised for Thursday 29th of July at Douglas GAA club and all are welcome.

Munster Final ReplayWell what more can be said about this game? While the rain didn’t help matters on the field of play, the first Munster Final to be played under floodlights certainly didn’t live up to its expectations. Cork weren’t at the races at all on the day and Waterford left a dreary Thurles last Saturday evening, worthy Munster champions. Our eastern neighbours seemed more prepared for this encounter, they took the sliotar out of the air on every high ball, while in close quarter play they came away with the ball every time, as Cork struggled throughout. In terms of accuracy, if Cork pointed half of those missed opportunities they would have won by a country mile but at the end of the day the ‘what ifs’ don’t count. No matter who won this encounter, I don’t think either team a match for Kilkenny but let’s see what September brings.

New Ships for NavyAs the LE Niamh returned from her 10 week mission to South America this week, it was announced that the Naval Service is to get two new ships at the cost of 50 million euro each. These are replacement ships for some of the older patrol vessels which are now over 30 years old. It doesn’t seem that long ago as I served in the Navy, when these Patrol vessels were built and launched at Verolme dockyard and it will be sad to see them eventually go. Congratulations to the crew of LE Niamh on their successful voyage while doing our country proud in true naval fashion and to the Navy on the news of their new vessels.

After The Flood!Cork people have no confidence 9 months after flooding - the Minister must go ahead with recommended Independent InvestigationWe are 9 months after, facing into another winter and people aren’t confident. They feel that it could happen to them all over again and nothing has been done as far as they are concerned.We do need this investigation. People have been left in an appalling state since that night. Their homes have been destroyed and they find now that they can’t get reinsurance. There are a lot of businesses facing extreme difficulties and we need reassurances that this won’t happen again.Certainly an independent investigation would establish what went wrong and structures, and procedure, could be put in place to ensure that doesn’t happen again.The report from the committee in the Dáil is calling for an independent investigation into what went wrong when we had the floods in Cork last November. What went wrong on the night and indeed prior to the night. The events that led up to that night. I certainly support this call and I feel the Minister should come out and state where he stands on it.

New York Honours Two Corkmen

Dear Editor The County Cork Association of New York will host a reunion banquet to celebrate its 125th Anniversary, on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Rochestown Park Hotel, Douglas, Co. Cork. Festivities will commence with a cocktail reception at 7:00 pm, dinner and dancing to follow. Music will be provided by the Art Supple Band. To commemorate this historic event the Association will honor two outstanding Corkmen, Cork City’s own - Paddy McCarthy and Cullen’s finest - Geff O’Sullivan.Paddy McCarthy, a native of Ballyphene, born and raised in the south side of “de City”. On leaving school Paddy tried his hand at several occupations. In the era of the show band and thronged dance halls, Paddy was energized by the buzz and excitement of it all. By age 17, he was a professional drummer playing with various bands including his mainstay, “Sunset”. Within a short time he was promoting concerts throughout Ireland.By the early 1980s, the Irish economy had sunk into dire recession. Unemployment was in the double digits and the City by the Lee was devastated. Old mainstays of Cork‘s work force such as Ford’s and Dunlop’s were crumbling. So like many of his contemporaries, Paddy set out on the well trodden emigrant path to the United States. By 1982, he had begun his New York career working as a bartender on Second Avenue. It was around this time that the Ballyphehane man came into contact with one of the godfathers of the Cork Community in New York, Joe Murphy a native of Cullen. Within a short time Paddy was press ganged into joining the Co. Cork Association. The two rebels have remained close collaborators

ever since.In the early 1990s Paddy opened his own bar, the thriving Nevada Smith’s in Manhattan. In 2000, Paddy together with other business associates launched the prestigious Irish Conections magazine which ten years hence, continues to provoke and inspire. Vehicles unable to move if all on board have not belted up. Better

arriving late than dead-on-time!Elderly dying on hospital waiting lists or living in fear at home. Solution? Arm our police force. Plus our rangers in green cleaning up our once beautiful city. No bail for scum awaiting trial. Better tax

payers paying more for numbers doing porridge rather than burying our friends!

The VisitThe family went to visit our friend, Fred who works for Concern in Tanzania. It took three flights over two days to get to Dar Es Salaam. I am not a great traveller and I think airports are the armpit of the world: too warm, uncomfortable and nothing decent to eat. But we got there in good spirits and then set off the next day for another day and half’s drive to get to Ruaha Safari park in central Tanzania. Driving through the bush, the roads were so battered; it was like driving on corrugated iron. The kids, all five of them, were thrown around in the back of the jeep and they loved it. Several hours into the journey, my husband delicately asked the driver, Rogerino for a pit stop. Rogerino, so named by the Italian nuns who ran the orphanage he was raised in, picked his spot carefully, first pulling across the empty road and back over again until he was satisfied that he found the shadiest spot. Men and boys are lucky, they can go anywhere. I would have to walk a mile before I had decent cover and then you wouldn’t know what or who you might meet: this was Masai tribe and lion territory. Two hours later and we arrived at the park gates and I could see a single hut up a hill marked ‘Ladies’. While Rogerino played eenie meenie mo with his parking options, I opened the door with the car still moving and hit the ground running, past the sentry and several tourists to that

gleaming hut on the hill. Sanity restored, I strolled back down to find the children standing on a bridge gawping down at several crocodiles and hippos in the river. We were to see lots of animals over the next three days but my favourite became the hippo. It is hard not to attribute human characteristics to animals; if it is fat then you assume that it must be cuddly until Fred told us that they actually kill more people than crocodiles. Hippos are defensive, cranky and paranoid. They are herbivores but if the mood takes them, they will overturn a boat and take a chomp out of you and then the crocodiles move in. No wonder they hang out together. When we moved into our house on stilts over looking the river, there were two hippos submerged in the water before us. They act like badly behaved old ladies who have had too much to drink. They sit submerged in the water all day long with only their nostrils and enormous rumps showing. Every now then they emit loud honking noises and burps and occasionally they come to the riverbank to bask in the sun like great big brown slugs. The boys renamed them Hippo-butt-am-I. The dining room was in a separate building about 500 yards from the houses. After dark, it was not advised to walk around alone and so every night after dinner, a Masai warrior escorted us home. The warrior was real: I felt his spear and it was as sharp as Gillette. The first night, my eight year old and I were walking back

to our house when the warrior spotted a fully grown hippo under our stilts. We became worried: it was a possibility that the hippo could head butt the stilts and send the whole thing crashing into the river. My son was afraid that the hippo might come into the house

during the night. I reassured him with, “He’s so fat that he won’t be able to get up stairs and even if he did, the stairs would collapse under his weight.” He nodded vigorously in agreement and said, “Anyway, he doesn’t have a key!”

MOBILE PHONE PRICE HIKES HIT CONSUMERS HARDThe announcement that two of the main mobile phone companies, 02 and Meteor, are to increase the cost of texts and calls for its mobile phone customers is totally unacceptable, particularly as mobile phone costs in Ireland are already among the highest in Europe. While there is to be a price increase across both the pre-paid and pay-monthly customers, there will be a massive 80% increase in the costs for some calls for pre-paid customers. This is particularly worrying as the pre-paid option is more often taken up by those on lower incomes and pensioners who are on tight budgets. According to ComReg 67% of all mobile phone customers were availing of the pre-paid option. These customers are likely to be hit hard by these exorbitant price hikes. Pay-monthly customers are also to be hit for a 35% increase on calls that fall outside their bundled minutes. Overall it has been reported that around 1.5 million users across the two companies will be affected. In these times of economic hardship, this is yet another difficult blow to the Irish consumer. It is particularly worrying that two large mobile phone companies have made this decision at the same time, both raising costs for pre-paid customer by a harsh 80%, along with other price hikes. I am calling on ComReg and the National Consumer Agency to investigate these price hikes and any implications for competition in the market as these two mobile phone giants hit the customer simultaneously.

PICNIC IN THE PARKDouglas Community Association and Douglas Tidy Towns hosted a Picnic in the Park on Sunday 18th July 2010.Despite the rain we had a great day of community getting together and re-inforcing bonds.We got excellent support from Country Market, Douglas Hall A.F.C., I.C.A., Lions Club, Rotary, Meals on Wheels and Preschool.We were able to provide a range of sandwiches and snacks thanks to Pepsi Cola, Zicos (Der), Topps Confectionery and the terrific work of Mary O’Leary and Brenda O’Mahony. We also had a face painting

competition which the children enjoyed, and we thank McDonalds for their support.Super Valu Grange also supplied us with snacks, sandwiches and other products as well as financially supporting the event.The Douglas Shopping Centre gave us their support which was appreciated.Tables and seating were provided by the army.We are particularly grateful to sponsors who gave financial support and vouchers and we must thank A.I.B. Bank, Barrys Of Douglas, East Village Bar, Restaurant and Hotel, O’Driscolls Bar, South County Bar & Café, Dwyers Electrial Limited, O’Sullivans Bar.We had a Crazy Hat competition (male and female) and vouchers from our sponsors were given as prizes.Douglas Hall had (a limited) penalty shoot out and were presented with a voucher which Welch sports in Douglas Shopping Centre sponsored.We also give our sincere thanks to the Garda Siochana and St. John’s ambulance.The festivities kicked off with a wonderful selection from the Gospel Choir, and then Louise Devoy (belly dancer) in her exotic costume entertained us.Our own volunteers were exceptional, from making sandwiches, packing goody bags, face painting, the crazy hat competition and providing supervision and man (and woman) power to erect tables and seating, and removing them and cleaning up, to welcoming everybody with

a smile and a greeting. They made the day.Also thanks to Juileen for the tea and cakes and to Jean for her fish bites, to Michael for his organic burgers and sausages. Not even the rain dampened their enthusiasm.It was our first and we learned. €13M OF WORKS UNDERWAY IN SCHOOLS IN CORK CITY & COUNTY THIS SUMMER - MCGRATH Cork South Central T.D. Michael McGrath has welcomed the start of work with an overall value of €13 million in schools in Cork City and County under the Summer Works Scheme. ‘120 primary schools and 49 post primary schools in Cork City and County are to benefit under the Summer Works Scheme. The total value of works being carried out at Cork schools this summer is in excess of €13 million,’ according to Deputy McGrath. Under the Scheme, the projects involved are of a small to medium scale nature. They can be carried out over the course of the school holidays, while the buildings are empty. This will serve to minimise any potential disruption to the operation of the schools. The works in question range from gas works and electrical upgrades, through to window and roof replacements. ‘I am delighted to see so many schools in Cork City and County availing of the funding in the Summer Works Scheme to get essential work done to the school. These works will help to create a better learning and working environment for pupils and staff alike. The Scheme also provides a timely boost to contractors in the Cork area. ‘I would like to wish all the Cork schools every success with the work they are getting done,’ concluded Deputy McGrath. Nationally, 1,568 projects are due to go on site over the course of the Summer to carry out much-needed work to existing school buildings. Almost €132m worth of works have been approved by the Department of Education under this year’s Summer Works Scheme.

In spite of our unsettled weather maintenance is still the key in July, and you can introduce new bedding plants to keep your garden looking bright and beautiful throughout summer.(Even if it doesn’t seem like summer)As usual we try to give you a few ideas on what might need doing in your garden. Not everything in this article may apply to your garden - but there might be something, if not this week maybe next week.

Flower GardenLift and divide bearded irises once they have finished flowering. Remove any dormant sections from the centre of the clump, and replant the fresh new shoots. Finish planting out summer bedding plants in borders, baskets and containers. Fill gaps with large argyranthemums, fuchsias or pelargoniums. Remove faded flowers on perennials such as lupins and delphiniums. Early pruning often encourages a second flush of flowers late in the season. Cut the flower-spike down to just above a new shoot or leaf, and give each plant a generous liquid feed to encourage fresh growth. Remove the seedheads from aquilegia to prevent them from spreading.

Kitchen GardenThe following vegetable crops can be sown directly outside: lettuce and salad leaves, radishes, kohl rabi, spring cabbage and endive, plus dwarf French beans for a late crop. Winter spinach can be sown from July to September. Never let onions go short of water or their yield will be severely reduced. Water plants thoroughly once or twice a week if conditions are dry, and keep down weed competition by hand or using a hoe. Sideshoots on cordon gooseberries and currants should be pruned back to about five leaves or 10cm (4in) long. The natural drop will thin out a heavy fruit crop to some degree, but it is worth lending a hand. Pick off any small, damaged or diseased fruits to leave those

remaining spaced 10cm (4in) apart.

LawnsMow it at least once a week, twice if possible, and finish by cutting the edges neatly. Feed lawns, if this hasn't been done already, and treat any weeds and moss. The clippings can usually be mixed into the compost heap, but remember to discard them for the first few mowings after applying weedkillers.

GreenhouseNever let crops in growing bags go short of water. Standing the bags on gravel trays or on reservoirs with wicks through the base can prevent drying out. Biological pest control can be used at this time of year against whitefly and red spider mite. Pot on rooted cuttings of pelargoniums, argyranthemums, fuchsias and other plants as soon as the roots have filled their pots. Take cuttings from the non-flowering shoots of shrubs and climbers.

In GeneralSome trees and shrubs have a habit of producing unwanted shoots from their base, or from the stems of those trained as standards. These can regularly be seen growing around rowan trees, sumach and older fruit trees. Cut them cleanly away with secateurs to prevent them sapping strength from the plant. Cut out plain green shoots growing on variegated shrubs to prevent them spoiling the appearance of your shrubs.

Kinsale Road Landfill, Capping Works, 26th July 2010 To faciliate the final phase of making the Kinsale Road Landfill site an amenity park Cork City Council has appointed a contractor to carry out capping/restoration works. The area to be capped measures approx 9 hectares (22 acres) and the works are scheduled to be undertaken over the period from July 2010 to Oct 2011. To achieve the final contours required it will be necessary to excavate and relocate waste material within the Landfill Site.The bulk of the excavation works are scheduled to commence on Monday 26th July 2010 and be completed within one week. These excavation works are likely to give rise to odours, and mitigation measures will be put in place to deal with same. Cork City Council regrets any inconvenience caused by these necessary works. Every effort will be made to minimise the impact and to ensure that the movement of waste is completed as quickly as possible. This 'Mardi Gras' style event starts at 7pm in the ground of Blarney Wollen Mills Hotel and will go on into the night. Official launch of the 2010 Midleton Food & Drink Festival

Over 150 supporters of the Midleton Food & Drink Festival joined Rachel Allen for a scrumptious luncheon at the Old Midleton Distillery on Thursday to officially launch the 2010 Food & Drink Festival, which returns this wonderful market town on the 11th September next. In what can only be described as the ‘finest lunch of the year,’ many of the town’s leading business representatives came along to enjoy this pre-curser to Midleton’s 2010 gastronomic food fair. Guests were treated to a 3 course feast, each sponsored by a local supplier. Irish Distillers, always great supporters of the Festival, generously supplied the wine for all to enjoy - along with the perfect venue for the event. Ballycotton Seafood presented the starter of full flavoured smoked salmon. Next came the main course of succulent, free range Irish chicken breast, wrapped in bacon, with a wild mushroom risotto and tarragon cream sauce. The poultry was supplied by Midleton master butcher, Pat O’Farrell and the locally produced fruit and vegetables all came from

Sean Walsh’s Village Greengrocer in Castlemartyr. Finally guests enjoyed a unique dessert of Jameson luscious strawberry trifle, prepared in the Distillery kitchen. Festival Chairperson, John McCormack, welcomed Rachel Allen and the guests to the launch of the 2010 Midleton Food & Drink Festival and thanked everyone for their support, especially noting the sponsorship of Market Green. “The Festival is a perfect showcase for all the fantastic locally produced foods in East Cork and a great boost for the local economy.” While Rachel Allen noted, “We are all looking forward with great anticipation to the fun of the Midleton food fair next September!” Among those who joined Rachel for the lunch was the main sponsor, Andrew McVea from Market Green. A lot of older people are facing old age pension cuts, taking away the Christmas Bonus from them wasn’t enough the Government now want to ensure that the weakest section suffer even further, more than 84% of older people in Ireland rely on the state pension and related supports to keep them from risk of poverty. Many of contributor pensioners have a right to their pension as they already have paid for it over their working lives. Paid high taxes, P.R.S.I etc. Elderly people took to the streets in 2008 when the Government announced plans to end the automatic entitlement to a medical card for the over 70’s.They are likely to plan more protests if such a measure is taken.In these uncertain times we all need a bit of cheering up. Why not get involved in “Know Your Neighbour” which takes place this weekend. Sometimes saying

a simple Hi is all it takes to form a simple friendship. We all remember the time when neighbour helped neighbour sharing what little they had as times have changed so too has the amount of free time people have, and sometimes people in newer estates have no communication with each other. Make a special effort this weekend “Smile and say hello”.The Knitting and Stitching show featuring stitch and craft and the festival of Quilts takes place in the R.D.S in Dublin from the 28th of October to 31st of October, this will be of great interest to our knitting and croqhet members and well worth a visit. As the name suggests, it covers knitting and stitching but so much more; there is so much to do and see you’ll find it hard to fit everything into one day. Hundreds of Exhibitions selling specialist supplies that you can’t find in the shops. If there is enough interest we will

The unstoppable juggernaut that is the hugely Abba inflected ‘Mamma Mia - The International Tour’ or ‘the World’s No 1 Musical’ has just arrived in Cork where it will spend the better part two weeks on Leeside at the Marquee from Tuesday, July 20th until August 1st. The June winner was Frank Cogan, who was the award for his man-of-the-match display for Cork Constitution in their AIB All-Ireland League Final win over St. Mary’s. Cogan also played in Con’s AIB Cup win over Garryowen in February.

Both stars were joined by friends and family at the event, Frank joined by his parents Anne and Frank Senior, Michael joined by his parents Michael Senior and Mary. Also in attendance were the new Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Michael O’Connell, Deputy County Mayor Deirdre Forde, General Manager of the hotel, Aaron Mansworth, organisers Seán O’Sullivan and Carmel Lonergan and trophy sponsor Gerald McCarthy.

Organiser Seán O’Sullivan spoke of the pride the two winners had brought on their families and the esteem they were held in. Both were integral parts of their sides’ victories and he wished both all the best in their careers. With both hailing from the same estate in Bishopstown, Cork. Shields spoke about the honour it was to the given the award and he hoped to do his best with Cork this year. He thanked the organisers, his parents and officers at the club for their support. Frank also thanked his parents and accepted the award on their behalf, he also thanked his club and team mates and said he hoped next season could be as successful as this one.

Lord Mayor Cllr. Michael O’Connell spoke of the influence of sport and recalled seeing Frank Cogan Senior play with Cork in 1970’s, he wished both winners luck with their respective teams this year. Aaron Mansworth, General Manager, Cork International Airport Hotel, said it was great to see two outstanding Cork Sport Stars, following the likes of Ronan O’Gara, Declan Kidney, Billy Morgan, Nollaig Cleary, and Gerald McCarthy onto the Awards rostrum.Deputy County Mayor, Cllr. Deirdre Forde said both were role models and an example to all young people, she also stressed the importance of sport for young people and the benefits for society.

Michael and Frank will join the other monthly winners in contention for the overall Southside Sports Star of the year Award to be held at the Cork International Airport hotel in association with Gerald McCarthy Awards and Gifts, at the end of the year.

The Intermediate Title was won in the early afternoon by Denis O Sullivan with a score of 9 under par adding to his recent Munster Strokeplay win . While celebrations were about to get underway for this victory, Liam O Brien was involved in a three way playoff for the senior title with Ray Murphy Templebreedy & Tom Lynch ESB who were tied on 14 under par. In the 9 hole playoff Liam finished 5 under par to claim the winners prize in the senior grade which he also won in 1997 & 1999, well done to both on bringing these honours to the Club. Celebrations continued in to the night at St Columbas Hall on Sunday. Earlier in the week Patrick Noonan & Liam O Brien played the Club matchplay final, Patrick was 4 down after 18 but fought back well to level the match after 35 holes, with both balls on the final green Liams birdie finish won the game by 1 hole up. G.A.A. FOCUSSnippets from the Local and National SceneBy Pat HarringtonLeinster FinalThe scenes from Croke Park at the end of the Leinster football final were nothing short of disgraceful. Referee Martin Sludden awarded a goal to Meath in the final minute of the game and the dubious nature of the score brought about a rather violent Louth backlash. This happened when the ball landed in the Louth goalmouth and appeared to be carried over the line and thrown into the net by Meathman Joe Sheridan. The referee then ran in and without any obvious consultation instructed the umpires to raise the green flag. The Irish Examiner printed an excellent photograph which showed the umpire standing by the goalpost with a clear view of Joe Sheridan rolling over the line. I would consider Joe was less than honest when interviewed on T.V.The referee dallied for far too long on the pitch after the final whistle and handed out one, if not two yellow cards. A number of Louth so-called supporters jostled, shoved, elbowed and punched the official who was not deserving of the punishment meted out to him. Stadium manager Peter McKenna claimed that the stewards did

a great job. One would have to disagree with these comments as there was a sorry lack of stewards and Gardai in position to protect Martin Sludden.In an interview on The News at One a gentleman stated that we simply don’t use the technology required in such cases. It’s not technology that’s needed here but common sense on the part of the officials. Going forward, The G.A.A. needs to utilize referees as umpires for championship games. In this instance Martin Sludden appeared to intimidate the umpire as he didn’t give him an opportunity to express an opinion.Leinster Under 21 Hurling FinalDublin caused a huge upset in defeating Kilkenny in the Leinster semi-final. The Sky Blues then went on to play Wexford in the final and entering the game as hot favourites displayed a huge arrogance as if they were winning Leinster championships every year. The Slaneysiders gave a great account of themselves but in the end just ran out of steam. Yes, Dublin have talent but unless they show respect for their opponents and work harder they will never make the breakthrough.County Championship DrawsSt. Finbarr’s vs. Glen Rovers – I fancy the Barr’s in this one.Na Piarsaigh vs. Midleton – I feel that the Northsiders have too much experience to let this one

21 hurlers have exited the championships at an early stage of the provincials. Yes, I am aware of development squads at underage level; this may or may not prove successful in the years to come. A former Cork hurler has said that there should be northside and southside colleges’ teams in the Harty Cup. Our secondary schools do not appear strong enough to compete. Cork teams were at their strongest when North Monastery, St. Coleman’s and Farranferris were very competitive. Players need to compete at the highest level to improve and develop. A sad statistic is that Cork has not won a minor all-Ireland since 2001 or under 21 since 1998.
