The Do's & Don'ts of Social MediaFor Interim Managers
DOHave Goals
If you're going to invest your time in social media, it'simportant to go into it with goals in mind. Start withyour goals as an Interim Manager and decide how
you will measure this success with social media.
Set off with a strategy in mind for the following:1. What platforms will you use?2. What images will you use?
3. What will you say about yourself?4. How will you say it?
5. How will you find your audience?6. How will you make it easy for your audience to
follow you?
DON'TWing It
When you have no goals in mind and no plan ofaction you will find that you spend much more time
on social media with fewer results.
Keep a notebook and tell yourself what's workingand what isn't. Find a great social media blog like
Social Media Today and read up for tips and socialmedia updates to keep yourself ahead of the game.
Remember the end goal!
DOHave Conversation
Social media is a lot like a networking event, youwouldn't go to one and start shouting about your
services straight away. You would look forrelevant people and start conversations, build
relationships and then finally SELL.
Do the same on social media.
DON'TBroadcast
There's nothing wrong with the occasional salesmessage to remind your audience about what youhave to offer, but remember not to broadcast toomuch. Nobody wants to be friends with someone
who only talks about themselves.
Think about the interest of your audience and yoursector specialisms and talk about these too.
DOBe Authentic
Don't be afraid to tell people WHY you do whatyou do. Being an Interim Manager is a lifestyle
choice and the people that build relationships withyou and follow you online will want to see that
you're being real.
A great example of this is when you're on holidayand do not wish to be on social media, you can say:
"Hello all, I'm away on holiday now until my nextassignment and will be taking a short break frommy online activities. I'll be back in a month, see you
then!"
DON'TBe Fake
Being fake on social media never lasts long, eventually someone will catch on to you. Here's
some things you should avoid!
1. Telling people to click on something that isn'twhat you say it is
2. Deleting comments that you don't like instead ofreplying to them
3. Using imagery that doesn't truly represent yourbrand
4. Using imagery or material created by someoneelse and not attributing to them
5. Saying 'WE' when there is only you speaking!
DOAdd Value
Remember that social media is not a sales tool, it'smain purpose is to warm up your leads for later.
People at this stage are looking for practical tips andadvice to help them solve their problems. If you cangive this away to them for free then you may spark
their interest enough to convert them.
Here are some different ways in which you can addvalue to your online community:
o Create an article or blog post entitled “Why do you needan interim manager?”
o Produce a checklist around popular business subjects orchallenges – e.g. mergers and acquisitions
o Publish case studies from your previous assignmentso Write about your own experience of the interim industry
– personal opinion is key
DON'TOver Sell
Don't push customers towards choosing your service,PULL them towards you with great content and
practical advice. Show them that you're an industryspecialist and thought leader and they will come to
you.
When you feel like it's time to make a deal and getan assignment this is where you can take the online
relationship OFFLINE with a phone call and a face-to-face meeting.
