Finally a fundraiser that you’llwant to participate in!

Buy your gift cards for the holiday season!

Our Gift Card Fundraising Program is off and running! We have several staff members and families that have already begun to take advantage of this great fundraiser! Buy what you want, when you want. No fees, no difficulties. Just a great way to help out the Ortona PTA. Remember, our fundraisers help to fund programs that benefit your kids! This fundraiser will be ongoing all year.  You have the opportunity to help us over and over again, reload gift-cards, or send e-cards.  The choice is yours.  Please keep us in mind for holiday purchases.

Sign up for your FREE account, by going to www.shopwithscrip.com You must have an enrollment code to get started.  Ortona Elementary’s enrollment code is ea6d42fb3ll6l If paying by check, orders are typically placed on Monday afternoons with delivery Friday.  Checks must be returned to PTA via “THE BOX” for us to place your order.  However, with routing numbers, you can place the order using Presto Pay and it would automatically deduct the funds from your bank account. Informational flyers are posted to the PTA website (www.ortonapta.com) for your review.  If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected]

THREE FOR ME

Three for Me helps the school organize and effectively communicate its needs to parents, and welcomes all families into the school as partners in creating a better learning environment for children.

By making the Three for Me promise and dedicating three hours of your time to the school over the course of the school year, you can strengthen the partnership between home and school for your child’s benefit.

If you are interested in Three for Me, please contact us at [email protected]

Counselor’sCorner:

The Christmas, Hanukah, and Kwanzaa Holidays are right around the corner. The holidays can be a stressful time if there has been a loss in the family or income is down. Be realistic with your children about the family finances so they won’t be disappointed if “Santa” only makes a small delivery.

In guidance we are doing the “Too Good For Drugs” curriculum in 3rd, 4th & 5th grades. I am teaching the intermediate students how to set goals and how to deal with peer pressure. These are foundational skills in resisting drugs.

In the primary grades, we are working on developing empathy through the Second Step program. Students learn to identify with the feelings of others through large photograph cards that show children in different situations. I ask questions about the children in the cards and have students role-play their different feelings in different situations.

Parents, if you are working but do not have health insurance, please be aware that a clinic operates on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5-8 p.m. You must call 253-6959 for appointments. The clinic operates at Daytona Downtown Christian Church on 1133 5th Street in Daytona Beach. You may call at 253-6959 for appointments. Please do not neglect your health during this important time of the year.

If you would like to mentor one of our students, please call me at 258-4668 on Tuesdays or Fridays from 7:30-2:30 or on Wednesdays from 9:00-12:30. You may leave a message on my answering machine and I will get back to you if I am not there. Mentors are volunteers who spend one lunch period week listening to a student and then 15 minute afterwards having the student read a book to them in our media center. This is a great investment in the life of a student.

Merry Christmas and have a safe and enjoyable holiday!

GRADE LEVEL NEWS

Kindergarteners are learning fast and becoming independent learners.  They are working hard on staying focused, staying on task and doing their personal best! In math we are working on number sense, place value, and geometric shapes.  They are continuing to learn to read by decoding sight words and practicing good reading strategies.  In science they are learning about space and distance. In Social Studies our theme is family and community.  We just enjoyed our first field trip to the Museum of Arts and Science. We appreciate everyone returning their field trip permission forms and supporting this fabulous enrichment experience.  We had a fabulous time dressing as Pilgrims and Indians while we ate family style under the pavilion to simulate the first Thanksgiving.  We will continue to work hard while having fun and we look forward to the rest of this special year!

Second graders have been working hard.  Now that we have become stronger readers, all we need to do is just keep practicing to build our fluency.  We should be reading every single night for at least 15 minutes.  We have also become math wizards when it comes to mental math.  Ask us how to decompose numbers to add and subtract.  It’s really cool and we are really good at it! The second graders have also received a wonderful opportunity.  A dentist will be visiting us this month to teach all of us about good dental hygiene.  Students that returned a permission slip will have a free dental exam and free sealants put on their teeth!  We are looking forward to this the week before we go on break.  As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact your second grade team!

Our Yearbook staff is asking that you please share your pictures of class field trips, parties, and activities so that we can include them in the 2011-12 yearbook. If you have pictures you are willing to share, please send them to us at [email protected]

FROM THE DESK OF THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER...Supporting Military Families

Volusia county ranks 17th of the 100,000 military children in Florida (approximately 1,154 children). The majority of Volusia county military population consists of Army and Navy active duty, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve. Guard and Reserve families have different needs than traditional military families, as they are geographically dispersed from other military families/services.

Deployment can be stressful and challenging for children and families, particularly with ambiguity and uncertainty, role strain, financial stress, anxiety about loved one’s safety, problems in communication, and loss of closeness/intimacy. Changes start before the family member departs and children may not process this right away. Reintegration presents its own challenges also, as there are adjustment issues for the military member and family members, which may be further complicated by emotional problems or physical injury. Problems of reintegration can continue for very long periods of time. Multiple deployments increase stress on families. Strategies that help military families through the deployment/reintegration process include communication pre, during, and after employment; social support from family friends; maintaining normal routines; reducing/eliminating media violence exposure; and allowing children to “warm up” and adjust to the returning parent. Refer to “Helping Children Cope with the Challenges of War and Terrorism” at "http://www.7-dippity.com/other/op_hcc.html"www.7-dippity.com/other/op_hcc.html.

The Interstate Compact provides uniform policy between participating states to resolve challenges military children face moving between school systems, including minimizing school disruption for military children during transition and deployment. The Articles of the Compact address enrollment (educational records, immunizations, and kindergarten and first grade entrance age), placement and attendance (course and educational program support, special education services, placement flexibility, and absences related to deployment activities), eligibility (enrollment and extracurricular participation), and graduation. For more information or assistance, refer to the website "http://www.Fldoe.org/military"www.Fldoe.org/military or contact the School Liaison Officer for North Florida at (904) 778-2236 or by email at "mailto:[email protected]"[email protected].

Eligibility under the Compact includes children of active duty members of the uniformed services, National Guard and Reserve on active duty orders, and members or veterans who are medically discharged or retired for one year. If your family meets eligibility, please contact your school’s registrar to update school records, in order to assist in appropriate identification of students and to provide support to your family.

Your school social worker is a resource for students and families. If you have any questions or concerns about support for military families, contact your school social worker, Melissa Burke-Jackson, 322-6201 ext.34217, or by email at "mailto:[email protected]" [email protected]. Your school social worker can also assist you with accessing community/social service resources, counseling services, and medical insurance.
