COLLEGE PRINCIPAL UPDATE I am very pleased to report that the College has been successful in its application for a Trade Training Centre submitted earlier in the year and has been allocated $4.5 million from the Federal Government. This funding will be for facilities to provide a pathway in Metals and Engineering and Construction from Stage 5, through Stage 6 to Certificate 3 training standard. These centres are being established in selected schools to help increase the proportion of students achieving Year 12 or an equivalent qualification and help address skill shortages in traditional trades and emerging industries. This process involved extensive planning and consultation from staff, DET, Asset Management Unit, Career Connect, Great lakes Council, the Chamber of Commerce as well as written support from many business/industry. This is a wonderful example of our community working together to benefit the Great Lakes and on behalf of Great Lakes College I would like to thank all those for their contributions to the submission. At this time of the year staffing changes do occur through transfer, promotion and retirements. Adriene Muscat (HSIE) currently at Tuncurry Senior Campus has been successful at merit selection and gained promotion to Head Teacher Social Science at Wingham High School. Darren Smith (English) also at Tuncurry Senior has accepted a position in the Catholic System in Port Macquarie and Colin Husband (Industrial Arts) from Forster Campus has been appointed to Taree High on transfer; all three will commence their new positions in 2010. Their contributions to the College over the past seven years has been invaluable and will be sorely missed. We wish them all the best for the future in their new schools. MADD week.

ART EXHIBITIONS will be held at all three campuses with works ranging from Year 8 through to Year 12 including Visual Arts, Photographic and Digital Media, Drawing and Design, 2D studies, Hand Built Pottery and HSC major works.

Forster Campus Art Exhibition will be open on Thursday November 26 from 9am with the official opening at 5.30 pm prior to the evening concert, and again on Friday November 27 from 9am till 2pm. The Exhibition will be held in the Art block. Tuncurry Junior Campus Exhibition will be held in E block on Friday November 27 from 9am till 5pm and Saturday 28 November from 10am till 2pm. Tuncurry Senior Campus Exhibition will be held in J block on Friday November 27 from 9am till 5pm and Saturday November 28 from 10am till 2pm.

There is no entry fee to these exhibitions but a gold coin donation would

be appreciated.

COLLEGE NEWS Peer Tutoring Presentation Dinner

Our Year 10 Peer Tutors along with guests and parents celebrated their success last Wednesday night at a dinner sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tuncurry Forster. The program included guest speaker John Marshall who at the age of 22 suffered a serious road accident leaving him a paraplegic. He has been an inspiration to all, giving talks regularly to young people around the state. It was wonderful to see over eighty guests attend the function at the Forster Memorial Club. We are grateful for the support of the Rotary Club and its members who organised the evening. Our students had enrolled in a TAFE funded Peer Tutoring Course with teacher Michelle Reed as the instructor. Students were then given Year 7 tutees to mentor for reading during Roll Call each day. Strong positive relationships have been formed during the year which improve self esteem and confidence in the classroom setting as well as in the wider community. We should be very proud of the achievements of our tutors this year, who are also excellent role models for the future. Both Lesley Mooney and Lynn Graham (co‐ordinators) have worked hard to encourage students to take up the challenge and become involved in this worthwhile program. P&C NEWS

Come and have a go at the NAPLAN tests. All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in schools across Australia undertake the same tests on the same days. Students have their skills assessed in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), and Numeracy. National test results provide information on how students are progressing and support improvements in teaching and learning. Parents and carers can best assist students by making them feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests. Their children can be assured that the assessments will give them an opportunity to show what they have learned in class.

All students are encouraged to participate in the national tests and special provisions are made to meet the needs of individual students with special needs. The above information is from the NAPLAN web site. These tests have replaced the old ELLA tests and are the national standard. At the last P&C meeting the principals of the junior campuses gave us a rundown of the local results and compared them to other schools in the region, state and nation. For the December P&C meeting we can all have a go at the Year 9 numeracy and literacy tests. Why don’t you come and see how you would compare with your child and other parents at these tests? The next P&C meeting is at Forster Campus library at 7.30pm on Wednesday 2nd December.

Involvement in the P&C is open to all parents, caregivers, grandparents and interested community members. Meetings are conducted on the first Wednesday of the month in school terms, commencing at 7:30pm and alternating between Forster Campus and Tuncurry Campus. FORSTER CAMPUS Our busiest and most challenging time for students has drawn to a close and we now eagerly await our School Certificate results from the Board of Studies. As teachers complete their marking of yearly assessment and exams, they begin to determine grades for student reports. Report writing is extremely hectic for teachers. The final checking, collation and printing of reports starts from November 30. Please remember all unexplained absences are reported and some parents will need to approach the Front Office to explain these absences if they wish a zero to appear on the front page. Reports will be issued during period 5 on Tuesday 15th December.

Year 10 students begin their week of Transition to Tuncurry Senior Campus. Many are looking forward to this time. Students need to ensure that all paperwork is completed for the week 7 activities. Parents of students leaving Forster Campus at the end of the year need to contact Mrs Hamilton so that their child can complete the necessary sign out documents. SRC Black and White Disco On Thursday night October 29, Forster Campus MPH came alive to the sounds of Breaking Contrast. Liam Bell, Aidon Scott, Sam Robinson and Jake Robertson played a great set which had over 200 people jumping and having a ball. Music chosen by the SRC boomed for the rest of the night. I haven’t written an article about The Black and White Disco. Instead I’ve let the students who enjoyed it speak for themselves. Thanks to our wonderful 2009 SRC for staging such a successful event.

TUNCURRY JUNIOR CAMPUS Relieving Principal’s Report Hello all of you valued readers. Can you believe we are almost to the end of the year already? I know I am conscious of how quickly time has flown. We have had a wonderful year and, to cap it off, are about to issue Lenovo Learning Devices to all of our Year 9 students. Yes, they have finally arrived and we have our wireless network operational for them as well. This is an excellent program that is fully funded by the Federal Government and will see dramatic changes to the teaching methods used in the classrooms in the future. It has taken a great effort by the Department of Education and Training team that has organised this program. The laptops being issued to the students is the last link in a significant chain of activities and events that stretches back to the start of the year. I know the students are excited as well. For some it will be the only computer in the house. It is significant! As we look forward let us remember that the Technology For Learning Program implemented by the NSW Government and Department of Education and Training over 10 years ago, has seen significant increases in the number of computers in schools and provided great opportunities for the advancement of using technology in teaching and learning. Without such a program many schools would not have been able to advance the use of technology in teaching and learning so far. Please join with me in farewelling our Year 10 students for 2009. They have done a great job and we wish them well in their future endeavours. I know they are ready for an adult working and learning environment and will embrace the opportunity to study through to the HSC. At our assembly on Wednesday this week, we have inducted our new captains, vice‐captains and prefects from the STC leadership team for 2010. They are: Captains—Sarah Germyn and Mitchell Dagger, Vice Captains— Maddie Hennessy and Alec Hanson, Prefects—Ashley Cook, Mitchell Inglis, Sharni Elms and Jack Reggers. Congratulations to all these students. They all have high aspirations and I look forward to working with

All students, except those who have gained full time employment are required to attend Transition Week in the Senior Campus. Week 7 30 November Many programs have been offered at this time. These include Rural Fire Brigade Basic Fire Fighting Course, Defence Readiness Course for Technical Trades, Enmore Design Centre Excursion, Work Placement and Work Experience. Year Book / DVD The Year 10 Year Book Committee has been working tirelessly to produce the best ever Year 10 Year Book! The Year Book contains personal profiles of students as well as photos of your time at school during Years 7‐10. Great Lakes College Year 10 Formal The Year 10 Formal is quickly approaching and students who have participated in their schooling and contributed to the college in a positive way throughout the year will soon receive their invitation to attend. The Year 10 Formal is a large event greatly anticipated by all Great Lakes College Year 10 students. Week 8 7 December Year 10 Graduation Assembly This Year’s Graduation Assembly will be held at Tuncurry Junior Campus on December 11 2009 at 9:30am (seated by 9:00pm). Week 9 14th December College Presentation Evening Tuesday 15 December MPH Forster Campus. Students who gain excellences will receive invitations to this evening. SASS Recognition Week

As part of the School Administration and Support Staff recognition week (2 November – 6 November), the library at the Tuncurry Campus presented Mrs Debbie Richards with flowers and chocolates in recognition of her work. Debbie supports the Junior Campus, the Senior Campus and TAFE library. In fact she has worked in School Administration for over 22 years. Her work in the library is valued by both the students and staff. Her knowledge of the library is extensive and she is always approachable and efficient. In fact she does the work of two SASS people working across two school campuses. We love her and her work. Thanks Debbie. TUNCURRY JUNIOR CAMPUS cont Steven Herrick visits

Approximately 65 students took up the offer to listen to a talk by Australian poet and author, Steven Herrick. Steven is a poet who writes stories in poetry form. He was thoroughly entertaining and engaged the students completely by performing some of his poetry. He even used some of our students as characters whilst reciting his poetry. Lizzie Skillen, Tom St Hill, Jett Choma and Rian Lukeman were chosen at random to become subjects dealing with issues about growing up. Steven imparted with the students his love of poetry and shared stories about himself and his family. There was a funny tale about a table tennis table, but you’ll have to ask someone who was there. He also recited a poem that started with, “10 things your parents would never say to you.” It was hilarious. Thank you very much to the students who took up this opportunity. Steven was extremely impressed with our students and their behaviour, as well as their ability to interact positively with him as an entertainer. Kindilan goes to Big Big School Recently, students from the Echidna room at Kindilan Pre‐school had a very exciting day, going on an excursion to the Science Faculty at Great Lakes College, Tuncurry Senior Campus. While there, the four and five year olds spent considerable time on hands‐on Science experiences. They investigated electricity using the van der Graff generator, producing 400 000 volts. The microscopes were very popular, with students looking at the surfaces of coins, the end of ballpoint pens, the inside of flowers and some disgusting looking bugs. Students pulled apart models of human body parts, and were able to view sounds they made on a cathode ray oscilloscope. Making mini‐volcanos was greatly enjoyed, as well as finding out about magnets and light rays. However, the most popular activity was using nets to catch water bugs from a bucket and then looking at them very closely using magnifying glasses. The excursion allowed the Senior Campus of Great Lakes College to increase its links with the local community. Students from the Senior Campus already do work placement at Kindilan as part of the Children’s Services Introduction TAFE course. Students from the Senior Campus who are participating in the University of Newcastle Introduction to Teaching course, giving them partial credit toward a Bachelor of Education, were also involved, getting a feel for the way that younger children operate. The excursion was a huge success, and will become an annual feature of the Kindilan and Great Lakes College, Tuncurry Senior Campus calendars. Thanks have to be extended to the Staff at Kindilan and Great Lakes College for enabling the excursion to occur. As well, the Kindilan students should be commended on their behaviour, manners and participation on the day. Private Vehicle Conveyance Subsidy For those students who have received a subsidy in Year 10 it is necessary to complete a new application form for Year 11 2010. Please contact the Senior Campus Office as soon as possible to complete a new form. Private Vehicle Conveyance (PVC) subsidy is available for eligible school student, where there is no public transport for all or part of the journey. PVC is paid on a daily basis for the single distance journey between home and transport pick up point/school. PVC may also be available on medical or safety grounds. CENTRELINK If you are currently receiving a Centrelink Allowance you will need to advise Centrelink that you are leaving the Junior Campus and enrolling into Tuncurry Senior Campus. TUNCURRY Great Lakes College Girls Day Out On Tuesday November 10 all Year 12 girls attended a development day at Pacific Palms Surf Club. The purpose of the day was to encourage students to enhance their feelings of self worth, self esteem and to build positive links between students, staff and community mentors for HSC year. The students were involved in a career forum where successful local women discussed there careers, challenges and goals. Students took part in workshops in which involved

• Relaxation and stress management using Tai Chi

• Self defence • Drama and Life Coaching scenarios to

develop inner confidence • Yoga

Community members discussed the importance of health and well being. It is hoped that young ladies learnt the skills that will be useful in overcoming challenges and develop inner

confidence to deal with the decisions that lay ahead. Organiser Ann Belcher would like to thank all the school and community volunteers that contributed to make this day such a success.

For over 5 years now NOVA Tuncurry has achieved a 100% success rate with its Transition to Work Program. Transition to Work, or TTW, is a NSW State Government funded Post Schools initiative. It is available to students with a disability who have completed their HSC to gain employment skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve the job of their choice. This means that this is a FREE service to students and businesses alike. Under the guidance of NOVA’s professionally trained Job Coach, Joanne Hassett, the students will learn the necessary employment and life skills in order to become a valued member of the community and work place. The students will learn such skills as personal presentation, financial awareness, social interaction, hierarchy in the workplace, career identification and goals, building a professional resume, job seeking and interview techniques. On completion of the two year program they receive a nationally recognised accreditation Certificate I in Work Education. NOVA prides itself on the strong relationships built with our students and it is because of this we are able to assist each individual with their job choice and target that specific employment sector. It is through this bond that previous students from Great Lakes College have successfully gained employment at places such as GLACIA House, Coolongalook Caltex Service Station, Kellie Turner Embroidery and Tuncurry Bowling Club. NOVA and many local businesses such as these have formed professional working relationships to fully support our students in the world of employment.
