The programmed obsolescence society

Every year, Turkey is throwing 56.000tons of Electric appliances into the garbage. This spectacular quantity can be put in perspective with the weight of Grey Whales still alive on earth: 4320tons.Among these ‘’technological’’ appliances, fridges are keeping an important part, presenting huge recycling issues due to the use of polyurethane foam within their envelope. On the other hand, in the frame of the ongoing Urban renewal operation in Turkey, the market is invaded by Construction material brands from all around the world, trying to get their share of the pie, represented by the construction craziness. These foreign brands are usually perpetuating the old western colonial pattern of local production, but exportation of the benefits out of Turkey, increasing the country’s external debt.

Moreover, the cost of most of these materials can’t be afford by local individuals, envisioning to build their selves a house, to protect their families

And if Le Corbusier was from the black sea?

Already in 1914, a hundred years ago, Le Corbusier was investigating solutions for social housing.

In this frame, he developed the DOMINO concept, of a concrete columns structure supporting slabs.

Nowadays, walking in Istanbul is proving how Le Corbu’s solution has been adopted by Turkish contractors, among whom; the migrants from the Black Sea region of the country are accepted to be the most actives.

From the freely designed façade to the free façade

The ‘DIY’ Fridge façade theory seeks to rethink Le Corbu’s freely designed façade in the Turkish low contruction budget, by exploring the architectural and spatial qualities emerging from the up cycling of used fridges as façade elements.

The free façade is aiming to allow lower economical actors to sustain their self constructed building production, without being the slaves of the big construction material brands.

The free façade can contribute to reduce ecological foot print by up cycling and create warm spaces for future urban generations.
