Venite

THE WORD ACTS 17:11; ROMANS 10:17

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm51bThe Refrain and “Glory be . . . ” are sung in unison. The Pastor or Lay Reader sings (says) the first strophe andthe congregation responds by singing (saying) the second.

The Spirit of God moves us to repentance and brings us forgiveness; He opens our lipsand arouses us to praise.

O Lord, open 'my lips,* and my mouth will de'clare your praise.

You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would'bring it;* you do not take pleasure in burnt'offerings.

Page 3: THE DIVINE SERVICE OF MORNING PRAISE - St. John's … THE DIVINE... · 2017-06-04 · Such is the lesson of the Tower of Babel. Apart from God we are alone and become enemies of one

The sacrifices of God are a broken 'spirit;* a broken and contrite heart, O God, youwill 'not despise.

Refrain

Create in me a pure 'heart, O God,* and renew a steadfast spirit with'in me.

Do not cast me from your 'presence* or take your Holy Spirit 'from me.

Restore to me the joy of your sal'vation,*

and grant me a willing spirit, to sus'tainme.

Then I will teach transgressors 'yourways,* and sinners will turn 'back to you.

Glory be to the Father and 'to the Son* and to the Holy 'Spirit,

as it was in the be'ginning,* is now, and will be forever. 'Amen.

FIRST LESSON Genesis 11:1 - 9When God created mankind, there was only one language. After the fall into sin, thesinful pride of the people was evident in their plan to build a tower that would make aname for themselves. Pride is faith in the self that exalts itself above God. Such love ofself leaves us alone and scattered. Such is the lesson of the Tower of Babel. Apart fromGod we are alone and become enemies of one another as well as rebels against Him.When the Lord confounded the speech of all the peoples of the world, He manifest in usthe division of sin that not only separates us from God, but that also separates us fromone another. The curse of Babel is reversed on Pentecost, when the Gospel goes out inevery language to every people to make us all one through the Word, the Gospel of ourLord Jesus Christ.

Now the whole world had onelanguage and a common speech. 2 As menmoved eastward, they found a plain inShinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake themthoroughly." They used brick instead ofstone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said,"Come, let us build ourselves a city, with atower that reaches to the heavens, so that

we may make a name for ourselves and notbe scattered over the face of the wholeearth."

5 But the LORD came down to seethe city and the tower that the men werebuilding. 6 The LORD said, "If as onepeople speaking the same language theyhave begun to do this, then nothing theyplan to do will be impossible for them. 7

Come, let us go down and confuse their

language so they will not understand eachother."

8 So the LORD scattered them fromthere over all the earth, and they stoppedbuilding the city. 9 That is why it was

called Babel --because there the LORDconfused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them overthe face of the whole earth.

L: The Word of the Lord. The congregation may respond to the reading by saying:

C: Thanks be to God.

SECOND LESSON Acts 2:1 - 21 Luke records the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise and Joel’s prophecy - the spectacularoutpouring of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. With the miraculous gift of speaking in thelanguages of those gathered in Jerusalem, the Apostles preach the gospel of Christ.Peter’s stirring sermon proclaims that “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord willbe saved.” Thus the day of Pentecost marks the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon theApostles so that they could "remember everything" that Jesus said to them as His eye-witness spokesmen and proclaim to us His saving Word. The Church is founded upon theapostolic Scriptures which give faithful testimony to Christ.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of aviolent wind came from heaven and filledthe whole house where they were sitting. 3

They saw what seemed to be tongues of firethat separated and came to rest on each ofthem. 4 All of them were filled with theHoly Spirit and began to speak in othertongues as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying inJerusalem God-fearing Jews from everynation under heaven. 6 When they heard thissound, a crowd came together inbewilderment, because each one heard themspeaking in his own language. 7 Utterlyamazed, they asked: “Are not all these menwho are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is

it that each of us hears them in his ownnative language? 9 Parthians, Medes andElamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judeaand Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the partsof Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11

(both Jews and converts to Judaism);Cretans and Arabs--we hear them declaringthe wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12

Amazed and perplexed, they asked oneanother, "What does this mean?"

13 Some, however, made fun of themand said, "They have had too much wine."

14 Then Peter stood up with theEleven, raised his voice and addressed thecrowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you wholive in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you;listen carefully to what I say. 15 These men

Page 4: THE DIVINE SERVICE OF MORNING PRAISE - St. John's … THE DIVINE... · 2017-06-04 · Such is the lesson of the Tower of Babel. Apart from God we are alone and become enemies of one

are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only ninein the morning! 16 No, this is what wasspoken by the prophet Joel:

17 "'In the last days, God says, I willpour out my Spirit on all people. Your sonsand daughters will prophesy, your youngmen will see visions, your old men willdream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, bothmen and women, I will pour out my Spirit

in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 Iwill show wonders in the heaven above andsigns on the earth below, blood and fire andbillows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turnedto darkness and the moon to blood beforethe coming of the great and glorious day ofthe Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on thename of the Lord will be saved.'

L: The Word of the Lord. The congregation may respond to the reading by saying:

C: Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL (PLEASE STAND.) John 14:23 - 31The Gospel lesson is read from the Gospel horn of the Altar (liturgical north). [A reminder of the lamb’sblood dashed on the Old Testament Altar of Burnt Offerings.] The congregation stands and sings wordsof acclamation out of respect for the words of Christ, our King.

The love of which Jesus speaks is the love of faith in Christ. It is the desire to receive theforgiveness, life, and salvation that our Lord wants to give us. It is to trust in Him above allthings. Such a love "keeps His Word." To "keep" the Word is to cling to it in faith, to findour greatest delight in the Word, to watch, to pray, to cry out to God, to confess sin, toreceive Absolution and the Supper, and to live in the freedom of Jesus' forgiveness. LovingChrist and keeping His Word is alien to the Old Adam within us. In fact, quite often we aretroubled by our lovelessness and faithlessness, so that we may even question our salvation. But the Holy Spirit comforts us. He testifies of Jesus and the love of God. He calls us tothis faith and love, again and again, that we might receive Christ and His peace for ourtroubled hearts. By the Word and Spirit we sinners become the home of the blessed Trinitywho gives us new life in Christ, the Word made Flesh.

23 *Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep Myword; and My Father will love him, andWe will come to him and make Our homewith him. 24 He who does not love Me doesnot keep My words; and the word whichyou hear is not Mine but the Father’s whosent Me.

25 “These things I have spoken to

you while being present with you. 26 Butthe Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom theFather will send in My name, He will teachyou all things, and bring to yourremembrance all things that I said to you. 27

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give toyou; not as the world gives do I give toyou. Let not your heart be troubled, neitherlet it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me say to

you, ‘I am going away and coming back toyou.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoicebecause I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’for My Father is greater than I.

29 “And now I have told you beforeit comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk

much with you, for the ruler of this worldis coming, and he has nothing in Me. 31 Butthat the world may know that I love theFather, and as the Father gave Mecommandment, so I do. Arise, let us gofrom here.

THE GOSPEL HYMN 177 “Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest”

SERMON The Sermon is usually based on the Gospel for the day.

“The Spirit Leads Us To The Word Made Flesh!”

THE OFFERING 1 COR. 16:2; 2 COR. 9:7

Just prior to the Offering Hymn being sung, the offering plates are given to the Ushers by the Pastor.

THE OFFERING HYMN 183 “Holy Spirit, Light Divine”The Altar is prepared by the Pastor for the celebration of the Lord’s Supper during the gathering of the offering.

THE OFFERING PRAYER ROMANS 12:1; HEBREWS 13:15,16

M: Father of all mercies, accept, we implore You, our bodies and souls, our heartsand minds, and all that we are and all that we bring to Your altar to be a holy, reasonable, and lively offering to You for the work of Your Church. Graciouslyreceive our offerings of praise and thanksgiving, born of Your Spirit through theGospel, even as You have received Your Church’s worship since the world began, for You have redeemed us to be Your own that we may live to You with all thatwe are and all that we have. May our offerings of praise be borne by the hand ofYour holy angel to Your altar on high, before the sight of Your divine Majesty;through *Jesus Christ Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the HolySpirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH PHILIPPIANS 4:6; 1 TIMOTHY 2:1,2

It is a prayer which “understandingly and unselfishly reveals true concern for the Church in all of its operations, the state and its governance, the home and its welfare, while it also remembers before God all mankind in theirrespective callings and necessities.” (Luther Reed)

Page 5: THE DIVINE SERVICE OF MORNING PRAISE - St. John's … THE DIVINE... · 2017-06-04 · Such is the lesson of the Tower of Babel. Apart from God we are alone and become enemies of one

On this day we praise You especially for sending Your promised Holy Spirit to inspire theApostles to proclaim Your Gospel and record Your truth in Holy Scripture. Through that life-giving Wordpreserve and extend Your kingdom of grace and, by the gift of Your Spirit, continue to lead those who hearYour Word to repent of their sins, be baptized, and in the name of *Jesus Christ receive full forgiveness.

Father in heaven, when You poured out Your Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, You enabledYour followers to proclaim Your saving deeds to many people in many different languages. By Yourmercy, cause the Church in our day to speak again with one voice. Grant purity of doctrine and faithfulpastors to Your holy Church throughout the world that, by humble study of Your Word, true unity in faithmay emerge as You also lead Your people speak the truth in love to one another. May Your Spirit alsoinstill fervent love for one another and lead Your people to abound in works of love and charity.

Be the Protector and Defender of Your people, that all Christians may fight the good fight of faith, and in this way preserve Your Church from deception of every sort, that the door of faith may be opened toall who do not yet believe, even the enemies of Your Church.

Lord of the nations, according to Your will, calm the troubled areas of conflict throughout theworld. Remove the threat of terror and anarchy which plagues our planet. Defeat the plans of all those whowould stir up violence and strife, and destroy the weapons of those who delight in war and bloodshed.Protect our military personnel as they work to achieve an end to worldly conflicts. Sustain them in theirtime away from family, and guide them to serve with honesty and integrity. Be also with our publicservants, the police and fire fighters, watch over them and give them patience and wisdom in dealing withthose whom they are called to protect and defend.

O merciful Father in heaven, guide all who have authority over us, especially our President; theCongress of the United States; our Governor; and all who make, administer, and judge our laws. Wehumbly pray that these Your servants will fulfill their civic duties, recognizing that they are Yourinstruments to care for us and to promote stability and tranquility in our communities.

O Lord God, visit the homes in which Your young people dwell, and keep all harm and anger farfrom them. May they receive the care and guidance they need from their parents, their communities, andgodly mentors. Cause us never to despise or anger our mothers and fathers, but to love, honor serve andobey them, that they would rejoice in their glorious vocation of self-giving love.

Almighty and Everlasting God, the consolation of the sorrowful and the strength of the weak, maythe prayers of those who are in any tribulation or distress, especially those who are in harm's way due toviolent weather, graciously come before You that You would protect and keep them, and for those whoseworldly possessions have been destroyed, that You would provide for their daily needs. Graciously be withall who are homebound, sick, injured, suffering or recovering from any sickness or surgery or undergoingchem and those who desire to be remembered in our prayers (including Linda, Marge, Tom Hall, Herb,Mike, Don Ingle, Dick Packard, Juanita, Terry, Pam, and Gene Pursell, Connie, Ruby, Sandy Frey, JeanHamilton, John Kenyon, Lynn Mischke, Albert & Barbara Moll, Jarielle Winkleman --- and those we nowname in our hearts. . .), that in accordance with Your will, they might receive appropriate care, recoverfrom their illness or surgery, and be led to look past their present trouble to the peace and joy that *Jesus, has prepared for all His people. Graciously abide with those who mourn the loss of loved ones. Comfortthem with Your certain promise of a joyful reunion in heaven for all those who die in the faith.

Compassionate God, as we journey through this earthly life, lead us to prepare for the world tocome in true faith through the use of Your means of grace, with a godly life, confessing Christ; and doingthe work You have given us to do while it is day. And when our last hour comes, support us by Yourpower and receive us into Your everlasting kingdom, where You live and reign with the Son and the HolySpirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY ISAIAH 6:3, MATTHEW 21:9

Sanctus

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING or EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Jesus took bread and gave thanks. The Greek word “eucharist” means thanksgiving. MATTHEW 26:26

M: Blessed are You, O Lord of heaven and earth. Almighty God, heavenly Father, wepraise and thank You for Your tender mercy. You sent Your only Son, *Jesus Christ tous, and we remember the great acts of love through which He has ransomed us from sin, death and the devil’s power. By His incarnation, He became one with us. By His perfect and obedient life, Hefulfilled Your holy will. By His innocent suffering and death upon the cross, Heredeemed us. He made there a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, and satisfaction forthe sins of the whole world and overcame the power of hell. By His rising from the

grave, and His glorious ascension, He restores us as Your children and opens heaven that

we may commune with You eternally.

In His Holy Gospel, *Jesus instituted and commanded us to celebrate a perpetualremembrance of His precious death until He comes again. Thus invited by Your grace,we now approach Your table with repentant and joyful hearts.

EPICLESIS JAMES 1:17,18

This prayer incorporates the prayer of the First Century Jewish Christians and Luther’s explanation of thesacramental union in the Lord’s Supper.

M: O merciful Father, King of all creation, every good and perfect gift comes down fromYou the Father of heavenly lights. Send down Your Holy Spirit upon Your gifts ofbread and wine, and bless them and hallow them; that we might be led by *Jesus’ wordsof institution to proclaim that in, with, and under the bread and wine that this bread is theprecious Body of Our Lord and God and Savior *Jesus Christ; and this cup is theprecious Blood of our Lord and God and Savior *Jesus Christ, which was shed for thelife of the world.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION MATTHEW 26:26-28; 1 CORINTHIANS 11:24,25

As he speaks the Words of Institution, the Pastor both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and setsapart the bread and wine for the Lord’s use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ's death.

M: Our Lord *Jesus Christ, on the night He was betrayed, took bread; and when He hadgiven thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is My @ body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.” In the same way also, He took the cup after supper and when He had given thanks, Hegave it to them, saying: “Drink from it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My @ blood which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, whenever you drink it,in remembrance of Me.”

PRAYER FOR COMMUNICANTSIn His word, God makes it clear that Holy Communion is to be shared by people of a common proclamation of faith(1 Corinthians 11:26, 1 Corinthians 10:16). So without judging anyone’s hearts, we invite those who share in thisconfession by their membership in our congregation or one of our sister congregations, and who are properlyprepared (1 Corinthians 11:27-29), to receive the Sacrament.

M: Earnestly desiring Your Fatherly goodness, to mercifully accept our offering of praiseand thanksgiving: we most humbly implore You to grant that, by the merits and death ofYour Son *Jesus Christ, and through faith in His blood, we and Your whole church mayobtain remission of our sins and all other benefits of His Passion. We humbly implore You that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthilyreceive the most precious Body and Blood of Your Son *Jesus Christ, and be filled withYour grace and heavenly benediction, and being made one body with Him, may dwell inHim, even as He dwells in us.

We believe that our unity is determined by agreement with the teachings and beliefsof the Bible as practiced by the Wisconsin Synod (WELS) or Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) andexpressed through membership. Therefore, we encourage guests and visitors to learn more about what webelieve and teach. Our practice is not meant to be a reflection on anyone's faith or lack of faith in Jesus. We encourage those who are communing to read page 156 of the Hymnal in preparation to receive theLord’s Supper. 1 Cor. 11:23-29 (Communion Prayers are also printed on page 11 of the Hymnal.)
