Minister: Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy. Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God –

People: Almighty and most merciful Father; we have erred, and strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against your holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us. But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent; according to your promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

Minister: Having confessed together our great need for God’s mercy, let us now silently and humbly confess to God our personal and particular sins.

The Service of the WordThe PsalTer Psalm 85:7-13

Minister: Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, People: and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly. Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Yes, the Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase. Righteousness shall go before him, and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

The Service of the Table

CORPORATE CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles’ Creed

Unison: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

COMMUNION HYMN

Soul, Adorn Thyself with Gladness—Franck/Cruger, arranged by Tom Jennings

Soul, adorn yourself with gladness, leave the gloomy haunts of sadness.Come into the daylight’s splendor, there with joy your praises render.Bless the One whose grace unbounded this amazing banquet founded. He, tho heav’nly, high and holy, deigns to dwell with you most lowly.

Now in faith I humbly ponder over this surpassing wonder:That the bread of life is boundless, though the souls it feeds are countless. With the choicest wine of heaven, Christ’s own blood to us is given.Oh, most glorious consolation, pledge and seal of my salvation.

Jesus, source of lasting pleasure, truest friend and dearest treasure;Peace beyond all understanding, joy into all life expanding.Humbly now, I bow before you; love incarnate, I adore You, Worthily let me receive You, and so favored never leave you.

The LessonsThe Old TesTamenT lessOn 1 Kings 19:9-18

9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 11 And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. 13 And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 He said, “I have been very jealous for the Lord, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.” 15 And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. 17 And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. 18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

The GOsPel lessOn Matthew 14:22-33

22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”

28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

THE SERMON LESSON Galatians 4:8-31

8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain.

12 Brothers, I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong. 13 You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. 18 It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you, 19 my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you! 20 I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

21 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. 23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise. 24 Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written,

“Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.”

28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

Taking Gathered Worship HomeThe Tenth Week after Pentecost– Sunday, August 9, 2020

Taking Gathered Worship Home” (TGWH) has been developed for you to use in the private worship of your home, whether you are married or single, and whether or not you have children. It is a tool to knit us together throughout the church year. While we would encourage the use of TGWH in its entirety, you are encouraged to adapt the offerings to your particular circumstances. The prayer is taken from “Lutheran Worship” and the psalm readings are taken from the “Book of Common Prayer” and the daily readings are from “The Daily Office.”

PLEASE BE IN PRAYER FOR:- Pray for Sula Ly’s mother, who is quarantined at home after testing positive for COVID-19. She

will need to test negative in order to obtain a certificate that will allow her to take a government sanctioned evacuation flight back to Indonesia. Please pray for a negative test result so she can return home! She is feeling very lonely and isolated now. Praise God that her condition was mild and she was able to recover well from the virus.

- Please pray for Christine Scott’s grandmother, Margaret, who is home after being hospitalized with pneumonia and shingles. She’s still very weak, and drowsy from the pain medication she’s taking. Pray that her strength would return and her appetite would increase, as well as for complete healing.

- Pray for Cathy and Ken Campbell as they mourn the loss of Cathy’s mom, Marjorie. Praise God that Cathy was able to be on the phone with her as she passed, and that Marjorie was strong in faith. Pray for comfort for Cathy and her brother, David, as well as for the rest of the family.

- Carol Crill is still struggling with seizures and unstable blood pressure. Please pray for wisdom for the doctors to find a solution that will control her seizures and stabilize her blood pressure.

- Pray for our missionaries in Central Asia. COVID-19 is overwhelming local healthcare infrastructure, and their government now recommends riding out the illness at home. Our missionaries assume they will eventually contract the virus and develop immunity, and their middle son presently has symptoms. Pray for their safety and ability to continue their work.

- Please be in prayer for John Ellis, who had a memory lapse episode. An MRI did not show the cause, but John is seeing a neurologist to try to find the cause of these episodes. Pray for healing and for the doctors to figure out what is happening.

- Please pray for JD Stewart and his family, as JD’s father died recently. JD was able to see him in Michigan before he passed. Please pray for the family as they mourn.

- Pray that Cathy Campell’s wound would continue to heal.

- Please pray that the Lord will contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus, providing wisdom for all the decision-makers and caregivers, and healing for those affected by the disease.
