TYPE 1 Diabetes
• the disfunction of the pancreas
ANATOMY• the pancreas is the organ in your body that produces insulin to break down sugars• type 1 diabetes is when your pancreas doesn’t produce insulin right due to your body attacking its own cells• you must take insulin through the bloodstream •Remember that lots of things affect your blood sugar like stress, exercise, illness and food
Testing•when testing yourself you need these items •You want your blood sugar to be between 70- 150 •You usually test 6 or more times a day before every meal and several times in between

Insulin
•Brings blood sugar down when high•When taking insulin by a shot you need fast acting and long acting•Fast acting for after meals•Long acting for at night•Used to come from pig s and cows and then it was synthesized in 1975•If you think you can ignore it you’re wrong; if you don’t take insulin you could die •You could get nerve damage, eye problems, and kidney damage if you don’t control your blood sugar right

The First Insulin Pump
•The first pump was heavy and about the size of a backpack•It had lots and lots of wiring•It was first developed in 1963
Pumps Make it Easier Today
•The pump makes it easier for on- the- go people•It is small and light•It makes it easier and less painful to take insulin •Remember: diabetes doesn’t ruin your life •Hale Berry, Jay Cutler, and Nick Jonas all have type 1 diabetes
The Omnipod•The Omnipod is the only tubeless pump•The pod has an insulin reservoir that releases insulin when you punch in the numbers on the PDM (Personal Diabetes Manager)•The adhesive cloth tape stays on for about 3 days •It is waterproof and you wear it anywhere (pool, shower)
