AAA MMMeeessssssaaagggeee fffrrrooommm ooouuurrr CCChhhaaaiiirrrmmmaaannn --- HHHaaayyydddnnn TTThhhooommmaaasss:::

Welcome to our production of Guys and Dolls, a musical play based on the unforgettable characters created in the 1930's by Damon Runyon, who drew his inspiration from the racy types he met during his career as a newspaperman in and around Broadway. The musical, which appeared in 1950, is the masterwork of the lyricist, writer and composer Frank Loesser principally and though written half a century ago, it still comes over as fresh, as tuneful and as astringently funny as when it first hit Broadway and became one of its best-loved shows.

The basic theme of the show stems from the originators' belief that one of Runyon's stories of unusual romance had the potential love-interest which had helped to make South Pacific such a smash hit in 1949.

Strange to relate, the latter will be our autumn production this year! Following that in March will be the very robust Seven Brides For Seven Brothers – yet another odd romance with some echoes of the classic story of the Sabine Women.

As formerly the Farnborough & R.A.E. and, currently, the DERA Farnborough AOS, our Society has put on over a hundred shows in the locality since it was formed in 1920 - about half of them in Farnborough at either the R.A.E. Assembly or the old Town Hall and half in Aldershot at the Princes Hall (and not forgetting the old Theatre Royal during the war years). In this special millennium year we are delighted and honoured that Rushmoor has asked us to present our production of Guys And Dolls as part of the Borough's Arts and Local History Festival 2000.

Meet inveterate gambler Nathan Detroit, always eager to set up a crap game, but much less inclined to marry his fiancée of fourteen years. The long-suffering doll in question is Miss Adelaide, star of the seedy Hot Box cabaret whose wedding anxiety is manifested with chronic sniffles.

When Nathan needs money for a new game site, he contrives a wager with his gambling buddy, Sky Masterson. The dapper Masterson bets he can convince any girl Nathan chooses to accompany him on a date... to Havana, Cuba. Nathan is sure the pot is his when he names the target Sarah Brown, reformer of sinners at the Save-A-Soul Mission. But it's Sky who comes up the winner when Sarah agrees to go with him to Havana on the condition that he deliver twelve sinners to the mission. As the Cuban night fades to morning, Sarah and Sky find themselves falling in love. Can the impossible happen?

Can the upright Sarah reform her gambler? Will the lengthy relationship of Miss Adelaide and Nathan Detroit come to a happy end? It remains up to our spirited heroines to bring their romances and this musical to a happy conclusion.

RRRuuunnnyyyooonnnlllaaannnddd "This crap game is over a garage in Fifty-second

Street this particular night, though sometimes it is over a restaurant in Forty-seventh Street, or in back of a cigar store in Forty-fourth Street. In fact, Nathan Detroit's crap game is apt to be anywhere, because it moves around every night, as there is no sense in a crap game staying in one spot until the coppers find out where it is."

Sounds logical. In the 1930's, short story writer Damon Runyon recreated a world of gangsters, gamblers, and New York's other assorted sinners in his own hilarious works of fiction. As in the excerpt above, Runyon presents his lawbreaking lowlifes as somewhat innocent, simple fellows, no matter how dangerous they may be. By telling the outlaw's stories with a light, sincere quality in perfect bad English, Runyon transformed deadly villains into quirky heroes.

In 1950, Frank Loesser took the next sensible step: make the gangsters sing and dance! Turning the Runyon tales into a musical comedy called Guys and Dolls was an ingenious move, and, ironically, many of Loesser's songs, such as ‘Adelaide's Lament’, ‘I've Never Been in Love Before’, and ‘Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat’, have become some of Broadway's funniest, most romantic, most well-known show tunes.

The musical, much like the stories, immerses us in the corrupt but whimsical world of Broadway's baddest gamblers, the guys, as well as their delightful sweeties, the dolls. The focus is two very different couples: one wonderfully romantic, the other lovably goofy.

Guys and Dolls first opened November 24, 1950, at the 46th Street Theatre (now the Richard Rodgers). Winner of eight 1951 Tony Awards including ‘Best Musical’, it ran 1200 performances (3 years) and the top ticket price was $9.60! Enjoying its third Broadway revival in 1992, the show grabbed another four Tonys including ‘Best Revival’.

BBBiiiooogggrrraaappphhhiiieeesss SSSaaarrraaahhh BBBrrrooowwwnnn SIÂN THOMAS

After 26 years as member of this society, and many principal roles, Siân said she was running out of things to say about herself in this write up, which her friends in the company said they found hard to believe! She feels very fortunate to be a part of this Society, particularly as this is the first show of the millennium, and because we are also celebrating our 80th anniversary.

This is a very different role from ones she has played in the last few years – namely the title role in Calamity Jane, and Velma in Chicago, but Sarah has nevertheless provided just as much of a challenge, most notably coping with the transition from poker-face to drunkard!

SSSkkkyyy MMMaaasssttteeerrrsssooonnn PHILIP MUMFORD

Philip has been seen in shows as diverse as Orpheus in the Underworld (Orpheus) to Jesus Christ Superstar (Jesus). He has also been known to play the guitar on stage (Crazy for You), dance in a baby costume (Chicago) and go mad with panic in a lift! (Oscar in Sweet Charity). It was in Sweet Charity that Philip last played opposite Siân and is pleased to renew the partnership for Guys and Dolls.

Philip works as a Computer Consultant with various city investment banks.

NNNaaattthhhaaannn DDDeeetttrrroooiiittt PAUL TAPLEY

A regular performer for the Society, Paul is delighted to be playing Nathan for the second time (no, the first was not in our 1983 production, we don’t think that he would have brought as much weight to the part as a spotty teenager!).

Despite re-treading old ground, in his opinion this is the most fun you can have in front of an audience!

MMMiiissssss AAAdddeeelllaaaiiidddeee VANESSA HIGGINS

Adelaide is Vanessa’s third principal role with the Society following Susan in Calamity Jane and Irene Roth in Crazy for You.

She has enjoyed playing Adelaide immensely and although the ‘Hot Box Club’ is a far cry from her real-life job as Church Secretary for St Paul’s, Camberley she took comfort in knowing that the ‘Save a Soul Mission’ was never far away!

NNNiiiccceeelllyyy---NNNiiiccceeelllyyy JJJooohhhnnnsssooonnn JIM PRESCOTT

Jim has performed in numerous comedy roles for the Society since joining in 1974. Principal roles include Billis in South Pacific, Hines in Pajama Game, Doolittle in My Fair Lady and Capt. Andy in Showboat. Cast as the Society's ‘Herman’, having played Herman in Rose Marie, Most Happy Fella and Sweet Charity.

Jim took the role of Nicely-Nicely (his favourite role) when the Society performed Guys and Dolls in 1983. He is also a member of the stage crew when not treading the boards.

BBBeeennnnnnyyy SSSooouuuttthhhssstttrrreeeeeettt RON WALKER

Guys and Dolls marks Ron’s 46th show with the Society. He has performed a variety of principal roles, his favourites being the Red Shadow in Desert Song, Ko-Ko in The Mikado, and Lt Cable in South Pacific. More recently he took the part of Frances Fryer in Calamity Jane.

Ron is currently the chairman of our Social Committee.

PPPrrroooddduuuccceeerrr JUNE THOMAS

Although June has been involved with the amateur theatre for many years, she has never had the opportunity to direct, or even perform in Guys and Dolls, which she considers to be a great oversight on her part. This has now been put to rights by her directing the show you will see tonight.

With a wonderful script, excellent and tuneful music, a strong and talented cast, she has found this show to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, as well as a great deal of fun. Hope you all enjoy it too!

MMMuuusssiiicccaaalll DDDiiirrreeeccctttooorrr DEREK CANFIELD

Derek is pleased to be able once again to conduct Guys and Dolls for the Society, as he much admires Frank Loesser’s skill as a Musical composer and lyricist, and Guys and Dolls must surely be Loesser’s most popular show.

Derek’s working life has been in defence systems, but he now faces a change of life, retirement, and looks forward to being able to devote even more time to the Operatic Society, his life-long ‘second occupation’.

SSStttaaagggeee MMMaaannnaaagggeeerrr MIKE DAVALL

For those of you who have been following our shows of recent will have noticed that we have been somewhat adventurous of late with our presentations.

For Guys and Dolls however we are returning to a more conventional show, with ‘proper' curtains. The one thing that still remains is the ever-present members of the Stage Crew appearing on stage. Our producers always seem to want supernumeraries (or flunkies as they are know in the trade!) and we are usually eager to assist, so keep your eyes peeled to spot a flunky.

Do enjoy the show and make a note of South Pacific for our next production in October.

CCChhhooorrreeeooogggrrraaappphhheeerrr JOYCE ATLEE

Joyce has been with the society for 18 years now as choreographer and during this time has also been part of the stage crew, spot light operator helped front of house as well as actually getting on stage from time to time.

This is the third time Joyce has either danced in or choreographed Guys and Dolls but familiarity hasn’t lessened the hard work required by this well known but deceptively challenging show. Working with the male chorus on the ‘Crapshooters Dance’ has been interesting and amusing but mostly extremely rewarding to see the high standard of dance they have achieved, and the practical problems posed by ‘Take Back Your Mink’ vary with every production but always end in the same way – dancers wearing less clothes at the end of the number than at the beginning.

The title of the Show tells us of the idyllic location of this most memorable of Rodgers and Hammerstein's creations. After Pearl harbour the American CBs were stationed on the Pacific Islands with little to do but dream about the delights of ‘Bali Hai’ and hunger after the US Nurses – ‘There is Nothing Like a Dame’. Living on the Island is a French Plantation owner who falls in love – ‘One Enchanted Evening’ - with the delightful Nellie Forbush who tries to ‘Wash That Man Right Out of Her Hair'. Can she accept his love and the children from his marriage to a native girl or must she obey the prejudices that she has been taught in the small town where she was brought up? This show features wonderful melodies, comedy, courtesy of Luther Billis and Bloody Mary, and a romantic story set in the turbulent times of World War Two - Don't Miss it!

If you enjoy seeing musical theatre, why not book a date to see our Spring 2001 production, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It began as a screen musical in the 1950s, and is best remembered for its colourful tale of the taming of seven wild backwoodsmen, its delightful score teeming with catchy songs such as ‘Bless Your Beautiful Hide’, ‘Sobbin' Women’, ‘Spring, Spring, Spring’ to name but a few, and the energetic dancing that came out of its unusual story.

Frank Loesser - born June 29, 1910, died 1969

"I Got The Horse Right Here...!" A Musical Fable of Broadway Big-time gamblers, undercover cops, night-club singers, savers of souls, rogues and racketeers these are the "guys" and "dolls" of syndicated newspaper columnist Damon Runyon's Broadway, around Duffy Square, circa 1950. He introduced some of them in a short story, "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown." Playwrights Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows scripted Runyon's fable for the stage, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, and they called it ‘Guys and Dolls’. "Nothing is in there that doesn't belong," Burrows said of his script. Loesser is quoted as having said "I write for the here and now; I write entertainment." Guy and Dolls proves both correct. FRANK LOESSER (Composer and Lyricist) was one of top Hollywood and Broadway songwriters during the late forties and into the early sixties. He was born in New York City on June 29, 1910, the son of an immigrant German piano virtuoso. Loesser never took lessons from his parents, rather he was self-taught in piano and harmonica. He graduated from high school but dropped out of City College in 1926 at age 16 and worked a series of odd jobs, including process server, office boy and roving reporter. While attending a Lions Club dinner one night, he wrote some silly couplets as part of the entertainment. Other members encouraged him to continue writing. Soon he began to write lyrics for popular songs. He sold his first, 'Armful of You’, for $15.00 to a vaudevillian. In time, Loesser was hired by the Leo Feist Music Publishing Company, mostly writing lyrics to the music of Joseph Brandfron, none of which was published. In 1931, after Loesser had left, Feist did, however, publish one of his pieces, with music by William Schuman, who later became president of the Juilliard School of Music. In 1932, Loesser took a job with RKO, but none of his work ever reached the screen. He soon left and became a night-club singer on New York's famed 52nd Street. He continued penning lyrics, and in 1934, supplied the words to an Eddie De Lange and Joseph Meyer hit tune called, 'I Wish I Were Twins’. In 1936, composer Irving Actman and Loesser teamed up to write most of the score for a revue called The Illustrator's Show, which only ran for five days at New York's 48th

Street Theatre. But those five days were enough to convince a scout from Universal Pictures to hand Loesser a contract. That job didn't last very long however, and Frank went back to New York. In 1937, he returned to Hollywood, this time to Paramount, where he stayed for four years. Among the films for which he wrote lyrics were: the Bob Hope comedy, Thanks For The Memory; the Bing Crosby film, Sing You Sinners; and the films Destry Rides Again and Forest Rangers. Frank worked with many other composers during this time, including Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz, Jimmy McHugh and Hoagy Carmichael. But with the start of WWII, he began composing music on his own. A Private First Class during the war, he worked in the Army's Special Services Division, supplying sketches and songs for all-soldier revues. He also managed to write a few hit songs during that period, including 'Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition', 'Roger Young' and 'What Do You Do In The Infantry?' In 1946, he was discharged and returned to Hollywood, where wrote such successful numbers as 'Tallahassee’, 'I Wish I Didn't Love You So’, 'Now That I Need You' and the Academy Award-winning 'Baby, It's Cold Outside’. In 1948, Frank produced the score for the Broadway smash hit Where's Charley, a George Abbott adaptation of the comedy Charley's Aunt, starring Ray Bolger as Charley. The musical produced two hit songs, 'Once in Love With Amy' and 'My Darling, My Darling’. In 1950, he had an even more successful Broadway hit with Guys and Dolls, which ran over 1200 performances. Later, MGM made it into a motion picture

starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra. Some of the hit songs in the show included: 'If I Were a Bell’, 'I've Never Been In Love Before’, 'Fugue For Tin Horns’, 'Take Back Your Mink’, 'A Bushel and a Peck' and 'A Woman in Love’, written for the MGM screen version. Loesser's last screen musical was in 1952, Hans Christian Anderson, starring Danny Kaye, which produced the hit song 'Thumbelina’. In 1956, The Most Happy Fella opened on Broadway. Loesser's score was extensive and superb. It included over thirty numbers, with duets, canons, folk hymns, arias, parodies, recitatives and instrumental interludes. In 1960, he scored the Broadway show Greenwillow which met with little success. But the following year saw Loesser with another big hit -- the Broadway musical How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize. It starred Rudy Vallee and Robert Morse. In 1996, the show was again performed on a Broadway stage. Frank Loesser died on June 28, 1969 at the age of 59, a victim of cigarettes. JO SWERLING (Book).
