Senior Choir Concert On Wednesday 4 September the Senior Choir joined 700 students from all around NSW at the Opera House for the 2019 Festival of Choral Music. They made up part of the Combined Public Schools Choir, performing alongside the Public Schools Festival Orchestra and the Public Schools Stage Band. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to perform at the iconic venue and to hear the power of their beautiful voices. Thank you to all the parents and family members who came to watch and to all the students for their hard work to prepare for the Festival. Thank you also to Ms Landis, Ms Rawson and Mrs Witkowski for their various efforts in rehearsing with the group over the last two terms and accompanying them to rehearsals.

G&T Information Evening If you have a child in Kindergarten 2019 or are a new family to our school this year and would like to find out more information regarding the Gifted and Talented program here at the Dem, you are welcome to come along next Monday 16 September, from 6pm in the Staffroom (in the McHatton Building). See pages 5-6 for further information.

P&C: Spell-a-thon The spell-a-thon quiz will take place next Tuesday, 17 September during class time. There is still time for students to practice their word lists over the weekend! Quiz papers will be marked on Friday 20 September at 9am. If you would like to help the P&C with marking please email me at [email protected].

Lendlease Community Program A huge thank you to the many Lendlease employees who arrived on site today to help around the school with a number of activities such as providing all-purpose weather treatment of seats and garden beds, assisting with building of musical props and helping out in the library. The Dem very much appreciates this community initiative and values their efforts. Thank you to Matt Williams from Lendlease and Ashley Grimmond for coordinating the day.

Musical Working Bee Tomorrow, we will kick off the first Annie musical working bee focusing on cutting and sewing for the many costumes required. We will be using some simple patterns to make some costumes, and making alterations to donated items. Any sewing machines that you can bring in on the day would also be appreciated. We will also continue working on props construction, so if you have the skills to assist in this area, please come along. The working bee will start at 9:30am.

P&C School Grounds Tidy-Up Come along on Sunday, to help the P&C with their Term 3 gardening working bee. All parent and child helpers are welcome to come along and assist with tidying up garden beds, cleaning up leaf litter from drains and other general gardening activities. Lunch will be provided on the day. Please contact Lucy Sarto via the P&C website http://www.thedempc.com.au for more information.

Lost Property Thank you to the parent helpers who made quick work of sorting through many buckets of lost property items this week! With the weather warming up we should see less jackets being left behind in the playground, however hats & caps will be required when students are outside. Please ensure your child’s name & class is clearly marked on all uniform items. Many non-school items have made their way to lost property as well. These will be displayed on tables on the 3-6 playground this afternoon. Please check for any item(s) that may belong to your child. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity.

2019 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Tuesday 17 September for English Thursday 19 September for Maths

These are the final two ICAS tests for this year. Registered students are supervised on the playground from 3:00pm until 3:30pm and in classrooms until 4:30pm. Please collect children from the Tuckshop area at 4:30pm after the test. For any queries, please contact Mr Kym Watterson at [email protected]

SRC Term 3 Fundraiser On Wednesday 18 September, the SRC will be raising funds for Guide Dogs Australia. The theme for the day is ‘Wear it Wild on Wednesday’!

Students can come dressed as their favourite animal and support the good work of Guide Dogs Australia with a gold coin donation.

As part of a maths lesson, students in 3-6 will be lining up donations and recording which class has achieved the longest coin donation line.

Thank you to our K-2 and 3-6 SRC coordinators.

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, a part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys, for students, teachers and parents, on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Participating in this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include:

communication between parents/carers and staff,

activities and practices at home and

parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour.

This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The survey is available in 23 languages.

The parent survey link is now open and will close on Thursday 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. Please use this link to access the survey: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/nsds2019

FABStar! FABStar! is an initiative to recognise positive behaviours in the playground. A FABStar! slip was drawn from all the students who received FABstar! slips in recognition of their positive behaviour on the playground last week.

This week’s K-2 Fabstar!s are Giselle, Mia, Melize and Olivia from Year 2. The four girls heard an announcement of Miss Payne's class pet, Sheldon, being missing and spent their stay and play time searching for him. The thoughtful four found him in a bush and returned him safely to Miss Payne!

This week’s 3-6 Fabstar! is

Nate in Year 4.

Nate picked up a bunch of

skittles on the 3-6 playground

and put them in the bin. He did

this all on his own to prevent

the birds from choking on

them. Way to go Nate for

looking after the environment!

Keep up the great work.

The Spell-a-thon Quiz will be held on Tuesday 17 September 2019 in classrooms during school time. The funds raised will again be used to support the school’s three year (2018-2020) Technology Plan. This year, monies will help fund the purchase of laptops for use in classrooms as well as costly printing materials for the 3D printer utilised in digital technology projects. Last year’s Technology objective was getting iPads into each classroom and expanding the Sphero robotic programme. Students raised a fantastic $21,000 which was a great contribution to this objective. The Quiz will be marked on Friday 20 September and sent home with students. Last year’s pizza party for the classes which raised the most money was thoroughly enjoyed by the students so we’ve decided to hold this prize again. There will also be Trophies and Giant Teddies for the classes which get the most correct words. We thank you in advance for your support in making this event both an educational and financial success for the students of the Dem School. MARKING HELP NEEDED: We need Volunteers to help mark the Spell-a-thon quiz papers on Friday 20 September 2019 from 9am. If you can help please email: [email protected] Thank you!
