Sharing Our Vision – Strengthening Our Society

Merle’s Missive - “Sharing Our Vision”

“The Athenians, alarmed at the internal decay of their Republic, asked Demosthenes what to do. His reply,

‘Do not do what you are doing now.’ “ Joseph Ray

We have stressed the theme “Sharing Our Vision- Strengthening Our Society” in our Mis-sives this first year of the 2013 - 2015 biennium. Although we have a new international president, Dr. Lyn Schmid, and a new international theme, “85 Years and Beyond: Advancing Key Women Educators for Life,” Mu State will continue to share our vision and strengthen our Society.

Each Mu State officer, chapter president, and district director received a copy of the Mu State officers’ goals for the biennium. I encourage you, as members of the Mu State Executive Board, to share these goals with all DKG members and add your goals to those we have endeavored to achieve.

In reviewing our goals, I am confident we have been successful in most areas. We are promoting our DKG vision and mission, increasing visibility and awareness through local media and speaking engagements, conducting projects that support Early Career Educators, increasing the use of technology (on my part at least), and promoting sound educational legislation through the US Forum. Leadership development training continues for officers, chapter presidents, chapter treasurers, district directors, and participants in the Florida Jesslyn McBride Leadership and Growth Seminar. These are just a few, along with other activities, at the chapter and state level.

Are we there yet? We have come a long way the first year, but we are not there yet! Where do we go from here? Defi-nitely continue with those things that have produced positive results. If you, or your chapter, have stagnated, read the (Joseph Ray) quote above again, and change your tactics. The old cliché, “Think outside the box,” may not be working or you have difficulty with thinking “outside the box.” Get rid of the ‘box.” Blow it up! Consider new, innovative – even drastic - measures to achieve your most desirable goals.

Please do not hesitate to ask your state officers and related personnel, the district directors, and past Mu State presidents for advice and information. We are at your service.

Treasures – how many do you have in your chapter? You know the ones. The member who always attends the meeting. The member willing to phone and then pick up other mem-bers, so they can attend the meeting. The member who is always there at the end of the meeting helping put things away. The member who is never in the spotlight but helps the meeting run smoothly. I hope that you have a made special effort to let them know how much you appreciate all their help. Another treasure is the chapter treasurer. When you have a raffle or auction, she handles the money and records it in the proper account. She handles the money when you cater a meal. She also completes many forms, such as Form 15A and 990N. She deposits the monies collected, and along with the president, sees that all bills are paid. She is the one collecting the dues from all the mem-bers. She is also the one who sends reminders that they are due, so that she can complete her report on time. She needs to know that she is appre-ciated, too. Look around your chapter. Introduce your newer members to these spe-cial treasures in your chapter. Let the newer members see how we appre-ciate all the members in the chapter and how everyone works to make it even better.

NETWORKING WITH DKGDeb Graff, Beta Theta Chapter

On an ordinary Florida day, Dr. Peg Dunn-Snow received a surprise from Iceland. It came in the form of an invitation from the University of Akureyri. She was asked to help the university take preliminary steps to develop their first art therapy program in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her official pa-perwork arrived on July 25, 2014, and she was invited to travel to Iceland in August of 2014.

This unique opportunity was awarded to Dr. Dunn-Snow through the “Fulbright Senior Grant.” She was placed on the Fulbright roster for the senior grant in 2011. As a Past National President of “The American Art Therapy Association,” Dr. Peg Dunn-Snow’s mission was to find a university that matched her field of study. Thanks to her membership and service in The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, she was able to network with Eyglo Bjournsdotti, a European colleague who had served with her on the DKG International Communications & Publicity Committee for the 2012 - 2014 biennium. Eyglo put Dr. Dunn-Snow in touch with the new dean at the University of Akureyri in December of 2013 and everything fell into place.

An excited Mu State DKG member left the humid Florida weath-er on August 20th for a month of teaching, research, and study in Iceland. While she was there, Dr. Dunn-Snow presented lectures on topics of: 1. Gratitude (Audience: University staff, faculty, students and open to the general public) 2. How to Use Art Therapeutically in the Classroom as a Non-Art Therapist (Audience: Teachers)

3. Best Practices Using Art (Audience: Parents of preschool chil-dren)

4. Life Review Art Therapy Tech-nique for the Elderly (Audience: Staff and professionals who work with the elderly.)

An additional bonus for Dr. Peg Dunn-Snow came when she discovered that the professor, the dean, and many others at the university with whom she worked were also members of DKG. For Dr. Peg Dunn-Snow, the opportunity to help launch a graduate art therapy program at the University of Akureyri in Iceland was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream, a dream that became a reality through the network of DKG!

Jesslyn McBride Leadership

and Growth Seminar

Ann Lumsden, ChairLeadership

[email protected]

On June 22 - 25, 2014, thirty-six participants and twelve presenters took part in the 2014 Mu State, Florida, Jesslyn McBride Leadership and Growth Seminar at the Lake Mary Marriott in Lake Mary, Florida. This was the largest group of participants that we have had in several years. The participants ranged in age from 27 - 77. They varied in educational backgrounds from kindergarten to college, counselors to principals, music teachers to physical educa-tion teachers. This was an outstanding group of women! They are all leaders in their schools, their communities, their chapters, and Mu State, Florida. They are ready to step into Delta Kappa Gamma Leadership roles.

The presenters were excellent as always! The schedule was varied to enrich the young and veteran educators. The seminar included tra-ditional topics like communication skills, par-liamentary procedure, professional dress, and planning chapter meetings. New topics were added that include identifying each person’s strengths by using a “Strength Finder Survey.” Another new topic was technology skills, intro-ducing new hardware and applications for par-ticipants to use during the seminar. Many used their iPhone or iPad.

Several participants from the 2014 Leadership Seminar attended Mu State Fall Workshop, pre-sented at a workshop session on Leadership, and shared their story and experiences. The Leadership Committee was available to answer questions about the seminar and how it can enrich an individual’s leadership skills.

The next Leadership Seminar will be held in June of 2016.

Strategic Action Planning

Gerry Hacker, SAP ChairMu State First Vice-President

[email protected]

Let’s join together to meet the Mu State Goal of 100% SAP participation. Chapters who have submitted Strategic Action Plans before the April 2015 Convention will be honored at the April Convention. Send it to Gerry ([email protected]) or any one of our committee members. Committee members include Elizabeth Decker ([email protected]), Judith Mix ([email protected]), Faye Murphy ([email protected]), and Barbara VanDiepen ([email protected]) Kudos to all Mu State Chapters who shared their Strategic Action Plans at. Fall Workshop. Presentations were exciting, enthusiastic, and very helpful to all members! We look forward to seeing all of the chapter SAP goals and achievements!

Strategic Action Plans provide ways for chapters to grow. Leaders from Generations Y and X are becoming more and more involved in the chapters and in Mu State. Strategic Action Plans have helped to pro-mote this. Included in many of the SAPs are the Mu State 7 Purposes are listed below:

1. To unite women educators of the world in a genuine spiritual fellow-ship

2. To honor women who have given or who evidence a potential for distinctive service in any field of education

3. To advance the professional interest and position of women in educa-tion

4. To initiate, endorse and support desirable legislation or other suitable endeavors in the interests of education and of women educators

5. To endow scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in pur-suing graduate study and to grant fellowships to non-member women educators

6. To stimulate the personal and professional growth of members and to encourage their participation in appropriate programs of action

7. To inform the members of current economic, social, political and edu-cational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society

I recently became aware of the use of Strategic Action Planning throughout the business world. To know that Delta Kappa Gamma, and specifically Mu State, has been involved in the use of SAP for a consid-erable number of years made me very proud. We want to promote DKG’s vision, strengthen the society, and represent the value and importance of being a part of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society Interna-tional.

Dear MU State friends,

Attending the MU State re-ception during the 2014 DKG International Convention was for me a highlight of the week’s activities! You provid-ed an atmosphere of colle-giality and relaxation that allowed all of your guests to rekindle friendships and make new connections – all with great refreshments. I’ve added your “Florida shell” remembrance to the shell collection I keep in my home office. It reminds me of MU State’s warm hospitality.

Looking forward to working with you and MU State this biennium!

THE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION CELEBRATES

Ann Blosfield, [email protected]

The Educational Foundation continued its 50th Anniversary celebration in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with its 25th Seminar in Purposeful Living entitled A Golden Dream in 2014, held from July 23 - 26. Of the 101 participants, fourteen were from Florida. Our own Dr. Elsie Gross was the chair of the Board of Trustees and as such oversaw this most excellent event.

The Seminar included tours of an Amish community, history and ar-tifacts of Fort Wayne, the beautiful Botanical Conservatory, Firefight-ers Museum, Museum of Art and African-American Historical Society, Embassy Theater, and a Tin Caps baseball game. There were several notable speakers from the area, including Johnny Appleseed (a.k.a. John Chapman) and artist Gwen Gutwein whose specialty is painting Indiana barns.

Many of the participants then boarded a bus which took them to the International Convention in Indianapolis. The 50th An-niversary ”birthday” cake was on display at both the seminar and the convention. Several of the recipients of the fifty $1,000 project awards given by The Founda-tion to celebrate its anniversary were on hand to receive their checks at the Cel-ebration Lunchen. Of the three Florida winners – Lori Howard, Patty Walker and

Sharon Wallen- only Sharon was present at the convention. Over $10,000 was contributed to The Foundation during the seminar and convention. The money will be used for the continued support of projects and Cornetet Professional Development Awards to educators.

Don’t forget to encourage educators, both members and non-members, who need professional development assistance to check the Internation-al website at www.dkgef.org for the Lucile Cornetet Professional Devel-opment Award or Project Fund in-formation to help meet those needs. Remember that all donations to The Educational Foundation will help ad-vance its goal to support and encour-age intercultural understanding and educational excellence.
