DKG California Leadership Team Announces Powerful New Vision

The DKG California Leadership Team, a group of more than 90 women, including your elected and appointed officers as well as the members of the fifteen committees, met this summer during Leadership Planning Session (SLPS) to plan, learn, and set the direction for DKG California for the upcoming year. The meeting took place at Asilomar State Park and Conference Grounds.

You, too, can become a member of the Leadership Team for the 2017-2019 biennium. Visit dkgcalifornia.org. Go to State Committees, drop down to Nominations, and click on State Committee or Area Director Recommendation to find the form. You may ask your Chapter or a colleague to recommend you, or you may complete the form for yourself. It must be submitted by November 1, 2016.

What does the Leadership Team do during SLPS? Committee members plan for an exciting year ahead and interact with other committees to ensure the Society progresses toward the fulfillment of the Seven Purposes for the coming year. A vision statement for DKG California was created with the idea that everyone will know and be able to articulate the vision of the state organization and it will be used on state documents. Use this vision statement on your publications and make it a part of what you tell new members when discussing DKG California:

The Leadership Development Committee also guided the team in a change process using the book, Our Iceberg is Melting, by John Kotter. The book, an allegory about penguins who need to make a big change, teaches the eight steps for successful change. It is important that the Society continue to change with the times and recognize that need to change when it arises.

The team made great progress toward changing the way documents are created and edited using Google Drive, Docs and Forms. Led by the Communications and Marketing Committee with training from California Webmaster and International Communications and Publicity Committee Member, Stacey Chicoine, the group quickly applied the technology to streamline the process of making the information available for members and Chapter Presidents.

As you prepare for new initiates and plan your

programs, remember DKG California is celebrating our 80th birthday on November 26. What better reason for your Chapter to have a party?

Many Chapter Presidents and Membership Chairmen are planning for the initiation of new members at this time of year. There are many tools now to help you. Of course, the warm, caring, informative personality of members is the key to success, but also consider using the following:

1. The Membership Recruitment Plan, posted on dkg.org, was developed by International;

2. The DKG California video, Each One Reach One, to help current members tell their story (A link is provided in the article below.);

3. The DKG California video Be a Member, also linked in the article below, for prospective members; and

4. The updated PowerPoint orientation presentation, Pride in the Big Picture. I have sent information about the presentation to all Chapter presidents. Presenter’s notes are included with this resource.

Plan ahead. Once you have initiated new members, be ready to give them a short term commitment or a one-time event in which to participate. Assign the person who sponsored each new member to connect with her “new initiate” on a regular basis. “How are things going at school?” “Do you need any help in the classroom?” “May I pick you up for the meeting?” Allow new members time to talk at your meeting. Send birthday greetings. Celebrate new members’

achievements and talents as you do with all members in your newsletter or at a meeting.

As you recruit new members, tell your story, share information about the Chapter, State and International experiences that are available to all members, and share the new state organization vision:

DKG California Educational Professional

Making an Impact!

With the talents, creativity and caring of each member in your Chapter, you have the power to inspire and encourage many new initiates. Be a mentor; share your spirit of DKG.

Janis Barr, Zeta Iota DKG California President

Two Videos Produced to Enhance Recruitment/Retention Target

Membership TARGET for the upcoming school year: Double DKG California’s membership

Two new videos are available to assist each member in recruiting just one new member during this school year. The first video, Each One Reach One, will inspire each current member to recruit just one new member. If each current member recruits one member, DKG California’s membership will double!

The second video, Be a Member, is designed to show to prospective members. It features the stories of current members highlighting the benefits of membership. It gives non-members a picture of what the Society is about. A template for business cards to give to a potential recruit is posted on the DKG California website. The card has a quick response (QR) code that can be scanned to lead directly to the video.

Every Chapter is urged to view Each One Reach One, print the business cards for members to share, and then find an excellent teacher you want in your Chapter. Give her the card, or better yet, watch the video with her. Invite her to a meeting and be sure to have a great program. Make her feel welcome and invite her to become a member! Toni Cook

Not all treatments work the first time, nor in the same way with different bodies. You may need to try the treatment for a few months before trying a different strategy. There are others who can help

you as you consider your selection and/or next steps. Below you will find a variety of symptoms and treatments. Feel free to invite your Area Director or a member of the DKG California Membership Committee to be an observer of your progress or a support mechanism for discussing trials, successes and modifications. For additional ideas, please see Attracting and Supporting Members.

Symptom of an ailing Chapter: Repetition in leadership positions Treatments:

Make co-positions with one member who has served before and one who is new to leadership.

Include members-at-large on the board so they will learn about the positions and will be prepared to accept when asked to take a leadership role.

At a program, have the current President and Vice Presidents tell what they do, so members are more aware that the position is doable.

Symptom: Lengthy meetings Treatments:

Consider streamlining the business portion of a meeting to keep it moving and completed in a timely manner.

Send out the business meeting agenda before meeting and encourage revisions and/or comments to the agenda prior to the meeting.

Symptom: No new members in the past 3-5 years Treatments:

Contact your Area Membership Chairman or an Order of the Rose Chapter for ideas they used to recruit new members.

Contact a local school or two for names of outstanding teachers.

Recruit from a CRTA division and other professional educational organizations such as ACSA or National Councils in content areas.

Volunteer THAT hours in local schools.

Present survival kits to new teachers (examples: Snickers bars, Tylenol, Diet Coke, and school supplies or gift cards to Office Depot.

Attention Special Ed Teachers! Here’s a Scholarship Just for You

The Dorothy M. Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to a DKG California member for graduate study in

the field of special education. The interest from Dorothy’s generous bequest is dedicated to the stipend that bears her name. Dorothy was initiated into a DKG chapter

in Alliance, Ohio in 1942 and became a member of Gamma Kappa Chapter in California in 1958. For 22 years, Dorothy taught vision-impaired students in Glendale, California. Dorothy remained active in her local community and continued to receive cards and phone calls from former students until her death on September 22, 1997. For further information on applying for this stipend, contact a member of the DKG California Scholarship Committee.

Member Ideas Needed for 2017 Convention Professional Development and Interest Sessions

Professional Development Sessions As a professional educator, currently working or retired, do you have an idea, interest, need, or focus you would like incorporated into the 2017 Convention program for professional development? Great ideas were implemented for the 2016 Convention from members’ suggestions such as the STEM program, DITEP

as presented by CHP officers, and how to address students with special needs. DKG California would like to present programs for California’s teachers and students in teacher training programs. Your recommendations for presenters or ideas that would be of special interest to educators would be welcomed.

Interest Sessions Convention interest sessions are planned with you, the member, in mind but your input is needed for an interesting and meaningful choice of sessions. The varied program at the 2016 Convention was great and plans are being made to offer an equally interesting and an even greater variety in 2017. If you have a special interest, idea, focus, or talent you would like incorporated into the interest session program, complete an application by November 1, 2016. Applications for both Professional Development and Interest Sessions are available on the DKG California website: dkgcalifornia.org. Deadline for applications: November 1, 2016. For questions or further information, contact Sue Noyes, Iota Sigma, at [email protected].

Time for Tea: A Pick-Me-Up for LIFE

Although the first printing of the Time for Tea book has sold out, a second printing may be picked up during the 2017 DKG California Convention in Los Angeles in May 2017. If you are interested in purchasing a book, you may pre-order by contacting Adele Bloom, 2 Mimosa, Irvine, 92612 or at [email protected].

The price remains the same at $50 per book. Remember: all profits go to LIFE. Thanks to Adele Bloom for her hard work. This beautiful little book makes tea time for you and your friends as easy as 1, 2, 3!

LIFE Meets One Goal; Sets a Second

Congratulations! Your generous donations, both large and small, met the goal set by The LIFE Foundation board last year. DKG California members donated $17,116.09. Pat yourselves on the back! LIFE Foundation awarded 21 LIFE grants and two Helene Going Green awards for a total cost of $11,490.

A second goal was set to decrease the percentage of board expenses. In keeping with that goal, a motion was passed during the May board meeting to decrease the reimbursement for board member mileage from 25 cents per mile to 14 cents per mile. The board will report this saving in May 2017.

Designing bulletin boards, organizing files, preparing reading materials: the to do list is never-ending for teachers. As this article is being written, teachers throughout the state are getting ready to greet a crowd of new faces when the school bell rings. DKG members have the experience and enthusiasm to assist teachers in getting the year started. How have Chapters assisted teachers?

Teacher Bags

Over the years, Delta Nu, Area XIII, members traditionally filled red bags with materials for teachers and dropped them off at school sites. But they were concerned the new teachers were not making the connection with DKG. Members decided to contact the new teachers personally which led to Delta Nu granting the Penne Ferrell Award to two new teachers. Other Chapters that provide gift bags to new teachers include:

Eta Upsilon/Area I Alpha Omega/Area III Beta Alpha/Area II Delta Lambda/Area V

Gamma Omicron/Area XVI

Sisters Helping Other Sisters Two years ago Beta Omicron, Area XII, members discovered that Chapter members needed to change classrooms and grade levels so they established “DKG Sister Day.” They put up bulletin boards, sharpened pencils, prepared nametags and student folders, distributed books, cleaned cupboards and made copies. Additionally, Delta Lambda Chapter, Area V, helps their members by giving a red rose and $50 to all teachers in their Chapter. Do you know a new teacher or a member who could use your help? Think of the influence DKG could have on educators if members helped teachers succeed!

Are you ready to STEP up to the plate and reach out to an emerging professional in the field? The Support Team for Emerging Professionals (ST4EP), formerly known as the Early Career Educators Committee, offers resources and opportunities designed

for educators who are in the early stages, first through third year, of their careers.

The STEP Committee strives to raise awareness of this critical need in the field, developing and providing tools and resources to DKG members to reach out and connect with emerging professionals. DKG members represent a powerful statewide team of experienced and skilled educators, who, whether retired or working in the field, are accomplished and high-achieving women. They have a genuine passion for learners, learning, teaching, and the well-being of the local and global community. DKG members are also part of a very strong international network of educators who are knowledgeable and resourceful leaders.

STEP has developed and compiled a number of tools and resources that are available on the DKG California website by clicking on the “Support Team for Emerging Professionals” link in the “Potential Members” section of the homepage. Past Chi State President Advises: Keep Music in Your Life

Most children run home after school to play. But not Past Chi State President (2011-2013) Sandy Rushing! In the sixth grade, she looked forward to going home to practice her clarinet for an hour every day! With the encouragement of her mother, Sandy used a Klose’ Clarinet Method Book to teach herself to play.

With talent and tenacity, Sandy became a fine clarinetist who played first chair in high school in Monroe, Louisiana. She also led the marching band as the drum major. Performing in President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration parade ranks as one of Sandy’s most cherished memories. Another favorite is playing the “1812 Overture” during an outside performance where a cannon was shot off during the concert.

Playing the clarinet for Irvine Valley College Wind Symphony, in school talent shows and at DKG State Conventions has been gratifying for Sandy as well as for her audiences. Sandy liked to share the many pieces of her clarinet with her kindergarten students and in talent shows she performed “The Incredible Shrinking Clarinet,” taking one piece after another off as she played, ending with only the mouthpiece.

Sandy did not play the clarinet in college, and looking back, she wishes she had not let those four years pass without music. Being turned away from playing the clarinet in one community college class motivated her to persist until she found her niche at Irvine Valley College. Now a member of this group for more than 35 years, Sandy believes music is a positive outlet and plans to keep music in her life. Former students she once invited to her concerts now invite her to their concerts validating the influence of Sandy’s love for music.

Leadership Development

Committee Announces January Seminar: “Getting Up on the Right Side of the Bed Every Day”

Do you ever stumble out of bed in the morning? Do you forget to set your objectives for the next day the night before? Or do you forget to use your calendar to set your To Do List for the day? Is your vision unclear and unfocused? Then plan to attend the Leadership Development Seminar in Sacramento during the Martin Luther King weekend, January 14 and 15, 2017.

Helen Horyza’s presentation, “Getting Up on the Right Side of the Bed Every Day,” will include activities that focus on leadership qualities you might take for granted, the problems you create that result in stress and conflict, your power to set and express your objectives, your brilliance channeled through effective feedback, and your unlimited supply of courage.

Remember, one does not need to be a DKG member to attend. Do you have a young teacher you would like to sponsor for the weekend? Is there a member in your chapter with whom you would like to share this information? Perhaps a colleague from school has expressed an interest in DKG activities and this would be an entry point for her.

You can find the registration form and hotel information at dkgcalifornia.org. Before the days slip by, be sure to send in your check and registration form, and to make your reservation at the hotel.

This event is only four months away. Have you registered and made your hotel reservation yet? Don’t let the time slip by and miss this opportunity.

Two DKG Californians Attend International Leadership Management Seminar

The DKG International Leadership Management Seminar, sponsored by the DKG International Golden Gift Fund, took place this July at the University of Texas at Austin McCombs School of Business in the Executive Education Program. Thirty participants were selected from all five regions of DKG and five different languages were represented. Two DKG California members, Diana Sawin, Zeta Zeta Chapter, and Toni Cook, Gamma Psi Chapter, were among the attendees.

The classes were highly engaging and professors were familiar with the needs and challenges of DKG and those of the participants. Topics varied from leadership, ethics and emotional intelligence to negotiation, advocacy and speaking on your feet. There were many opportunities to work in teams, small groups, and interact with other members of the group. Participants learned about themselves through various assessment tools; however, it was emphasized that good leadership requires focusing on the needs of those who are being led. Another major take-away was increased knowledge of the Society and its history. The group visited DKG International Headquarters, learned about the workings of the Society, and interacted with the administrators, including President Lyn Babb Schmid. Another special event was a ceremonial visit to the grave of DKG Founder Annie Webb Blanton.

The next seminar will take place in 2018 and any interested member is encouraged to research the information on http://www.dkg.org and consider applying. The only requirement is that the applicant is a member at the time of application. The selection committee looks for service commensurate with the length of membership and leadership potential. It’s not too early to begin preparing to apply for this amazing learning experience that will make an impact for years to come. Toni Cook, Gamma Psi, DKG California Executive Secretary

Treasure the Past

Nancy Martin Made a Difference

Nancy Martin, Chi State President, 1979-1981, made significant contributions to education and The Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Reflecting on her unique journey and the imprint she left behind, we’re reminded of Robert Frost’s words in the Road Not Taken. Nancy was courageous who took the road less traveled.

Nancy’s career in education was distinguished, serving as a teacher, vice principal, and resource specialist in the San Leandro Unified School District. Through her counseling, encouragement, friendliness and support, Nancy provided her students excellence in education.

Nancy’s service to DKG began in 1964 when she joined Zeta Phi, Area III. She served her Chapter well as a mentor and worked diligently to encourage each member to become actively involved in furthering the Society’s Purposes. She held a strong belief in the personal and professional value of being a member of the Society. Serving as State President for the 1979-1981 biennium, Nancy was a visionary. She was instrumental in establishing the guidelines for the purchase of the Education Center by establishing an Ad Hoc Committee to investigate the possibility of a permanent office in Sacramento. Concerned about the need for members to become more knowledgeable politically, she was involved with planning a program to give members a first-hand experience with the legislative process which led to the Legislative Study Session. She reached out in fellowship to women educators in Mexico. This program led to the first DKG Chapters in Baja. Recognizing the need to preserve the state’s history, Nancy was a strong supporter in the preservation of the Society’s archival materials and the development of the library.

During the state’s fiftieth anniversary year, leaders expressed their dreams and expectations for the future of Chi State. Nancy expressed a desire to see two things happen: an “endorsement to support a foundation to award grants” and “a program of leadership development to provide opportunities for individuals to develop and use their full potential in all stages of their life”. The LIFE Foundation grew from this vision as well as a Leadership Development program designed to meet the needs of members.

Nancy also made contributions to DKG International. She served on the Leadership Development, Research, and Professional Affairs Committees. In 1983 she was chosen to be Facilitator of the Eunah Temple Holden Leadership Fund Workshop and served as Southwest Regional Director for the 1984-1986 biennium. She was the recipient of both the Distinguished Service to Chi State Award and the International Achievement Award.

This humble lady’s life was a unique journey that always produced quality. She encouraged and mentored members to use their ability and skills to attain new heights as active members and teachers of excellence. Nancy Martin has shown by her examples that we, as valued members of the Society, can be leaders in any capacity. This is her legacy to us. “And that has made all the difference.”

1961 The theme of the Silver Anniversary at the California Convention, “Conquest of Inner Space,” was introduced in a keynote speech by Grace Knoles, Chi State President. It was a plea, said Grace, “… for building bridges until we can communicate not only with other people but with the interior of ourselves. Do we feel deeply enough the contradiction between what we say and what we do?”

1986 “The most recent achievement and the crowning jewel of Chi State’s accomplishments during these first fifty years is the Chi State Education Center in Sacramento. The building is functional, in a lovely part of the city, and has a prestigious address. It has one purpose only – service to members.” Chi State President (1985-1987) Mary Buckley’s ‘The State of Chi State’ speech is included in the collection of speeches entitled “In Our Own Words.”

2011 At the 75th Birthday Luncheon during the 2011 Chi State Convention, attendees received a glass paperweight etched with a drawing of the Education Center created by Grace Powell, 1987-1989 Chi State President. The donor of this elegant gift was Nancy Martin, 1979-1981 Chi State President, who wanted to honor those who completed the multitude of tasks necessary to bring the dream of an Education Center to fruition.

From Our International Guest

Thanks to DKG California members for including me on your guest list at your "Hit a High Note" event in Nashville during the 2016 DKG International Convention. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and have one of your bandanas to prove it! It was great to reconnect with so many of you and to meet California members I had not known previously. California members definitely work hard for the Society, but know how to enjoy each other's fellowship – a winning combination you have mastered. Thanks again!

Memorable Member Quotes

Where Do You Fit in This Puzzling World?

Editor’s Note: The Education Center Management Committee collects memorable quotes from members and houses them in Sacramento. You may use them in your newsletters, inspirations and the like.

“… I like to view the world as a gigantic jigsaw puzzle in which each individual holds her own unique piece to the puzzle. Each piece is a different size and shape. Some people are expected to accomplish grandiose and important tasks that impact the world, while most of us have more modest deeds to do. When we connect with people, nurture, encourage, and help them discover their piece of the puzzle, they are able to fit that piece into the big puzzle, to make their contribution as it were, and the world benefits from it. When the opposite occurs, when a person feels disconnected and not valued, the consequences can be tragic, as we know all too well.

“Let’s reflect on our own situation and decide what we can do—within our classrooms, within our chapters, and among our families and friends—to reinforce those connections with others, to help them see and appreciate their strengths so they can put their piece into the puzzle to make the world a better place.”
