COLLECT

Omniscient Father of the Universe,

God of Truth, Beauty and Justice;

We thank Thee for the intellectual bond

Which exalts the achievement of people.

As we promote understanding and critical thinking,

May we practice good fellowship and release our capabilities,

May we gain in inward poise and appreciation of Beauty;

As we discipline self, may we sponsor

Meaningful attitudes and Justice among all peoples.

Day by day, as we plant the seed of enlightenment,

May we reap Faith and Vision.

Grant us these ideals in greater measure,

We ask in Jesus' name.

Amen

ALPHA STATE TEXAS EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

What is ASTEF?

ASTEF is a 501(c )(3) public charity organized for the following purposes:

To provide funding for activities that support professional and personal growth of women educators in Texas, and

To promote educational excellence for Texas students.

ASTEF is the fundraising entity supporting the Texas State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Who runs ASTEF?

All members of the Texas State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma are members of ASTEF. The Annual Meeting of members is held during the TSO Convention.

ASTEF is managed by a Board of Directors elected by the members. The 2015-2017 Board consists of 22 members. The TSO President, Scholarship Chair and Leadership Seminar Chair all serve as ex-officio members of the ASTEF Board. Officers are elected by the Board.

What does ASTEF do?

ASTEF manages three funds: Scholarship, Leadership, and Projects.

Scholarship funds scholarships and lifelong learning opportunities.

Leadership provides leadership training through Leadership Seminars and sponsored speakers.

Projects provides stipends for chapter projects and supports other educational endeavors that benefit Texas students and educators.

In the six years since its inception, ASTEF has awarded project stipends each year during the Annual Meeting held during TSO Convention. In 2016, twenty-three chapters received stipends for a total amount of almost $30,000.

How can members and chapters support ASTEF?

Contribute to ASTEF. Interactive contribution forms are available online. Contributions may be made in honor or in memory of someone, and all individual contributions are tax deductible.

Participate in ASTEF fundraising activities, such as cruises, Road Scholar programs, and raffles.

Apply for a state scholarship; encourage Aspiring Educators to apply for funding; participate in leadership events sponsored by ASTEF; apply for a chapter project stipend. The next application deadline is April 1, 2017.

ALPHA MU CHAPTER PROJECT

Little Free Libraries Literacy Project

2016-2017 Goals

Literacy Project: The Alpha Mu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma has elected to

continue to support the Little Free Libraries Literacy Project for 2016-2017. This

project incorporates the support not only of our chapter members, but also other groups

or individuals who want to join us in accomplishing our goals in the community for

literacy. Although the project details have been a work in progress, the following are

some of the steps/goals our chapter will endeavor to follow in order to continue to

successfully implement this literacy project in selected sites and elementary schools:

Selected sites are the Brownsville Children’s Museum, Moody Clinic, Good

Neighbors Settlement House and the Friendship of Women, Inc. These little free

libraries will continue to be supported and restocked; they have been registered at

the https://littlefreelibrary.org/ through the Girl Scout leaders.

Longoria Elementary school is also a projected partner site. Our Alpha Mu sister,

Maggie Aguilar-Crandall, Librarian at Longoria Elementary School, has

spearheaded this project. Alpha Mu Members will continue to bring new and gently-

used books to help stock the libraries. This year we hope to add another elementary

school to this project.

We are in collaboration with the local Brownsville Girl Scout Troop 8 to provide

additional support for this literacy project. Our contact person is Diane

McLeary. The troop has built the little libraries and has also secured book donations.

These little libraries will be tagged with a label noting the collaboration between

DKG and the Girl Scouts. We plan to explore more collaborations with another Girl

Scout troop this year. We also want to enhance the libraries by adding a bench to

encourage sitting and reading.

Collection of new books or gently used children’s books appropriate for grades K-5

will continue to be encouraged and announced at our chapter meetings and

community events. This endeavor will be coordinated by Maggie Aguilar-Crandall

and DKG Alpha Mu members. We plan to develop a pamphlet with key information

on where to donate these books. This is also showcased on our Website

http://dkgalphamu.weebly.com/

Establish a portable lending library that would support our newest teachers! This

will be in the form of a backpack which will support our new teachers’ professional

growth and literacy packs. We plan to have them donated by book companies.

Submit a grant by January 2017 to ASTEF and DKG at the state level to supplement

the purchase of additional books/carts.

THE DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SONG

Women teachers, to the calling

Firmly rally, never falling,

Duty ne'er upon us palling,

Staunch, courageous we!

Loyalty and trust e'er heeding,

Mindful of our sisters needing,

Aid and guidance from those leading,

Helpful may we be!

To Delta Kappa Gamma

Faith we pledge forever!

Hand in hand our loyal band,

Forward, moving ever!

Onward! 'tis our sisters need us,

Courage, Faith and Honor lead us!

Wrongs in truth and justice heed us!

Firmly shall we stand!

Guardians of the Faith yet sleeping

For our sisters watch e'er keeping,

Deeds of others now we're reaping,

We for others stand!

To us pioneers have given;

We return their gifts to Heaven,

Work for others is the leaven

That inspires our band!

Oh, Delta Kappa Gamma,

In thy fold we gather;

Unity and Liberty

Shall be our watchwords ever!

Education e'er we'll further;

Each is bound to each as brother,

With this faith in one another

We shall win, for aye! Annie Webb Blanton
