MONEY MATTERS For November 2017 by Geri Eckert, Treasurer

We had a lean, but enthusiastic, crowd in October. Not sure why some months are better than others, but we take what we can get. Speaking of getting....our music that day was paid for by LARRY

TYRELL. Larry made a wonderful cash donation to sponsor this young band from Sacramento, ie: PARKER WEIS and THE WEIS GUYS. Actually there's one gal in the group!!! These fine young people come out of our Jazz YOUTH PROGRAM which is the reason why our JAZZ SOCIETY exists.....to Promote, Preserve, Teach and Support the love of JAZZ. Thank you, Larry, for sponsoring this band. PRESIDENT’S REPORT - For November 2017

Hello All. Well we have gotten to another Thanksgiving Day. We are a small club to be sure but so far we are a survivor in a world of contemporary music so different in style and content (whose quality is not equal to ours) . As you know, this year we held no popular-vote board election for SJDJS Officers.

For this very simple reason: there were no replacement candidates! Your Board Members generously have agreed to carry on, hardly unaware of the time and energy required. A number of other bylaws spelled out in our club document have been “put aside” because we have only a skeleton work force to maintain our affairs. So, back to my social-organization description, I feel that is how we need to envision and perpetuate the club so as to enjoy one-another's company on a dependable anticipated basis as long as possible. All activity and finances are on track for next year. Useless Random Thought of the month: The small world around us. I have a hummingbird feeder suspended by a 5 foot cord from an overhead balcony, just nearby to a supporting column. Ants are of course attracted. They climb the 6 feet up the column from ground level to arrive adjacent to the feeder; just inches away, but with no way to traverse the gap. Someway - somehow they figure out that they need to continue their climb (though it means that the scent attenuates as they do so) to bridge that gap via the balcony, and descend the cord to the prize. I marvel! How would those tiny tiny creatures possess that degree of reasoning power; that is, to countermand their scent instinct and carry on their journey? Two thoughts for your consideration : Do you want to prove to all that your financial affairs were in superb order when you passed away? That last check you wrote bounces! Regarding the NFL’s concern over concussion injuries: What seems to me to be more urgent is the need to provide construction worker knee pads.

Til’ we “text” again, your Prez Frank...........

  • SEEN AT THE SCENE - In October 2017 By Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus - The Delta Rag

Wasn’t it nice to see such a well dressed and professional looking guest band? I actually miss the days when the band members dressed alike. And what a treat to hear

the young people carry on the jazz tradition. My heart is at ease. Audrey was back, with her smile in place, chuckling because she got away with setting cancer aside until she was darn good and ready to deal with it. And then, after her surgery, she almost beat the Anesthesiologist home, only I guess they did prevail upon her to spend a couple of days in the hospital. Dave Tygett maybe didn’t have quite the usual spring in his step yet, but he didn’t gnash his teeth at me when I took too long deciding on which of the amazing raffle prizes I wanted to take home, so I think by November he will be in fine fettle. Whatever fettle is. You never hear of anyone being in lousy fettle. I think it is the Dixieland Jazz that keeps us in fine fettle. I know I was in bad fettle when I missed a couple of months.

I have a special compliment for Dick Lockwood. His solo on Louisiana Fairytale was so beautiful it nearly took my breath away. It must have felt wonderful to him when he played it. Don Rees once played “Memories of You” for Deck Hogin that was so beautiful that I actually got tears in my eyes. Years later I asked him to play it for me in Cliff’s memory. I had no idea at the time how ill Don was, and he just looked at me strangely, and he passed away not long after that. Now when I hear that tune (I think Midnight Rose plays it), I will weep for both Cliff and Don. Oh yes, I’m the gal always telling you how good the jazz makes me feel. Well, sometimes a good belt of emotion is good for your fettle.

When I bought my raffle tickets, I watched Arleen Mataga to see if she would come over and try to trade tickets with me. Last month she said if I had bought one less ticket she’d have won. This month, I won the most absolutely scrumptious cinnamon bread imaginable! I may have to rewrite my will to put Larry Tyrell in it for his cleverness in adding this to the raffle, and perhaps I’ll add a little something for Dave Tygett for being patient while I fumbled around finding the very, very best thing on the raffle table. Boys, don’t give up your day jobs, I might not get a round tuit. I knew all was well with the world when I saw Judy Griffiths dispensing her therapeutic hugs. Among the happy faces, I saw Bev Martin, enjoying the company of a Grand, and a Great-Granddaughter. And I can tell you that is both a great and a grand thing! It is always a pleasure to see Luis and Frances Rodrigues on the dance floor. Or anywhere else, in fact. John Mitchell and Nellie Zavala were dancing, but they left early, and thus missed some of the jammers playing their most danceable tunes. I looked for them on the dance floor in September but didn’t see them. It is a busy time of year, but also an exciting one at the jazz, so don’t miss the next couple of months. I want to thank our Music Director, Carl Kaiser for soliciting our opinions regarding guest bands for next year. Personally, I love giving my opinion, (I bet you guessed that about me.) so I filled out the questionnaire so thoroughly that Carl probably hasn’t finished reading it yet.

NEWS FROM THE VEEP (Vice President/Music Director) Carl Kaiser — For November 2017 The Kids are Comin’, The Kids are Comin’! Kind of reminds me of movie about the Russians, but hey, there is way too much talking about the Russians these days! Getting back to the important stuff, our October session featured the ultra-talented Parker Weis and the also ultra-talented Weis Guys. Two of those youngsters

are actually in high school, the others are not much older. What will they be doing in 5 years, 10 years, etc. Many thanks to the Guys (and Gal) for their wonderful performance! And many more thanks to Larry Tyrell for sponsoring this fine band. When the youngsters took a break, the jammers were ready to, as always, step in! The October jammers were Greg Ayala, Geri Eckert, Carl Kaiser, Mark Kramer, Frank Lindskoog, Dick Lockwood, Bill Sharp, Larry Tyrell and Chris Williams. Thank you to the jammers! Our November session will feature the Cocuzzi Trio - Kristy and John Cocuzzi and Brian Kilfoil). We know them from the past and they are quite simply some of the finest musicians in the valley. Kristy plays woodwinds and sings, John plays piano and sings. Meanwhile, it is Brian’s job to keep our toes a-tappin’ with help from the drum set. We are lucky that they are available to perform for us as they have a very busy performing schedule! If you were present at the October session, thank you very much for completing the questionnaire. The numerical and written comments will go a long way to help me assemble the 2018 guest band schedule. It is interesting to note that a few groups received both a 1(lowest score) and a 5 (highest score) from different folks. Now what do I do!!! Since I get the big bucks, I’ll get somebody else to do my job for me. Oh wait, this is not a government job! I will do it myself. With your help! Seriously, thank you for your help with this task! Enjoy the Halloween season, see you in November! Want to Contact Me? Send me an E Mail: [email protected]

    SPLINTERS FROM

$5.00 ADMISSION FEE FOR ALL JAMMERS, VOLUNTEERS AND CLUB OFFICERS: We began collecting this Admission Fee in August of 2017.

At our June 2017 Board of Directors Meeting, after hearing our Treasurer’s Report, we knew that we had to take some measures to secure the financial future of our Society. We voted unanimously to charge all Volunteers, all Board Members and all Jammer Musicians an entry fee of $5.00 at the door. The existing admission fee of $8.00 for Society Members, $12.00 for non-members

and the student fees remain unchanged. We will continue the “First Time Guest And One Other Person Get in Free” program. (See the Coupon on Page 10) Our Guest Band Members and one guest will (of course) not be charged this fee. Our Society got a very nice thank you letter from Dustin Huntziger. Dustin is the Grandson of our dearly departed friend Freddie Spitzer. Dustin, following in Freddie’s footsteps, plays the coronet. The SJDJS sponsored him to the Jazz Camp this year. OKOM carries on! That’s Dustin in the white shirt, alongside Bob Romans. Bob (CB 7) has been a big supporter of youth bands for as long as we have been the San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society.

    P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For November 2017

Happy Turkey Month Y’All. Seeing as how no one ran for President of the SJDJS in 2018, our President Frank Lindskoog is continuing for yet another term in office. Congratulations Frank! His election means I continue as your Immediate

Past President. Immediate being the key word here. Not so immediate any longer. I think Frank has been in office since 2014ish. My sincerest congratulations to all of our continuing, returning, faithful Officers: Vice President/Music Director Carl Kaiser, Secretary Barbara Baughman, Treasurer Geri Eckert, Equipment Manager Larry Tyrell (he is second to Immediate Past President) and Members at Large Judy Griffiths and Kerry Lockwood. This is a good time to recognize all of the other loyal SJDJS Members that keep us running too. Check out the box on page 3 for the team roster of players. In honor of our recently held elections I am hereby recommending a pay increase for all of you. So, let’s say a 10% raise across the Board. A little quick math here: 10% increase on $ 0 pay results in still $ 0 or Nothing! This next story has to do with your U Tube Homework Assignment. As I have previously told you, Dad’s ice-cream-cone-in-the-forehead moment in life came during WW II in Oakland, Red Nichols was working in the Mare Island Naval Shipyards during the day and jamming with some of the musicians at the Dime Jigs (Rose Room) in Oakland at night. Dad among them. Red Nichols told Dad he was going to Hollywood to cut some records and maybe make a movie. “Duke, I want you to come with me and be my Trombone guy.” Says Red. Dad still had vivid memories of heading across country on several trips to New York with the Carvel Craig Orchestra in the late 1930s. They were going to make it big time in the big band era. They never got there. The band usually ran out of money and jobs before the Rockies. Mustard sandwiches to stave off starvation. Playing a few one night stands for gas money to get back to the West Coast. When I was born (in 1940) Mom told Dad “You are a father now. You have to get a real job Duke.” Sure….blame me …. The first-born. So, back to the ice cream cone story… Dad recalls telling Red, ”Nah….That’s OK Red, you’ll be back in a few weeks.” And the rest is history. Back when I was in high school (c.1958) Dad (Duke) was playing a lot of Dixieland music (and wished he was playing more of it too). He had some 33 LPs by a group called The Kings of Dixieland. I listened to those records until the grooves were worn out. The Kings Of Dixieland were a studio group that recorded for Crown Records between 1957-1962 Your U Tube Homework assignment: This is all Bill Sharp’s fault. For showing me how to surf U Tubes. It becomes an endless chain. So, I went surfing on U Tube for your tune of the month. I shot the best part of a whole afternoon doing so too. I couldn’t decide between two really nice tunes that I found, so here are both for your listening enjoyment. I think you will like them.

The first one is Meet Me Tonight in St. Louis, Louis by the Kings of Dixieland. Yeah, I know, a Waltz! But stay with it! Personnel: Allan Reuss, Dick Cathcart, Eddie Miller, Marty Matlock, Milt Holland, Moe Schneider, Nick Fatool, Ray Sherman, Red Callender https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Nl6HgEvIbDM&list=PLlGQU4AFzIZS9_0ATUq2laqmxJbNB_MXs&index=72 The second one is Dark Eyes by Eddie Condon New York, Jan.27, 1962 Bobby Hackett (trumpet) Peanuts Hucko (clarinet) Lou Mc Garity (trombone) Dick Cary (piano and alto horn) Jack Lesberg (bass) Buzzy Drootin (drums) Eddie Condon (guitar)
