Fellow Kincaids, Kinsfolk, Friends, And so 2017 draws to a close… Along with the seemingly unavoidable annual hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations and celebrations, the busy-ness of shopping , decorating and wrapping that can leave the most organised of us slightly on our knees, we have, in the midst of tinsel, mince pies and endless parties, the opportunity to re-member again the central event of our world’s history. I am astonished and amazed and thrilled and challenged every year by the Christmas story…. When I finally down tools on Christmas Eve (I never seem to manage it any earlier) and sit back and read again this special story, I think about what it is we are actually all celebrating and I am overwhelmed by the sheer sacrifice and extraordinary love of it all. The Chief’s Column (continued) Kincaid, in which he talks about launching the experimental approach of appointing three Com-missioners to “aid in the efficient operation of our Clan Society”. Charles Kincaid of Northern Virginia, Robert Drown of Arizona and New Mexico (wow that’s a large area!), and Pamela Kincaid Dengler of Michigan. Charles, Robert, and Pamela obviously did a wonderful job with his experiment and here we are 23 years on having grown in numbers quite wonderfully. I am not surprised that Arizona is quite a big enough area for one Commis-sioner these days! We have been extremely fortunate over the last few years with a number of opportunities to gather as a Clan due mainly to the generosity of spirit and purse of a few wonderful people. We have had the 2014 Gathering in Scotland organised by James Brisbin, which was a joy for both Angus and I to be a part of. Then another gathering in 2016 in Estes Park, Colorado, again organ-ised by James Brisbin and this time assisted by Patrick Kincaid and Eva Knight. This was my first Scottish Games in the United States and what an unforgettable experience that was! Hot on the heels of Colorado came the opportunity for us to take part in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August, 2017. As we both read and saw from the summer Defender, it was a special moment for Clan Kincaid. Every single tent decorated and hosted, every Defender produced, article written, every meeting attended, and every position filled is done voluntarily; time given, petrol tanks filled, homes shared, meals cooked, travel and accommodations paid for all done and given with love. This desire to connect, to share, to work together, to explore our heritage together, and enjoy Kin-ship and friendship is precious indeed. This is all the more important these days when family units are under more pressure than ever before. This is the heart and soul of our clan and organ-isation. Organisations can be purely functional things but our Kincaid Clan Society is brim full of real people who love one another and talk together; they plan, build, grow, and reach out be-yond their own backyards and we are all the richer for it. Thank you so much for all that you have all given to our common good over the last year. I want to say how extraordinarily grateful I personally am for the friendship I have received, for the prayers prayed for us and for the hospitality we have been privileged to enjoy. Giles’s health is stable and in a good place which we don’t take for granted. Giles and our children join me in wishing each one of you a blessed and beautiful Christmas. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he

will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9 v6

A Message from the President P A G E 3

The year 2017 has been an outstanding year for Clan Kincaid. The highlight of our year was the Royal Military Tattoo held in Edinburgh, Scotland in August. Our Clan Chief, Madam Ara-bella, was honored at that event. I am pleased to say that we had forty members, family, and friends of Clan Kincaid in attendance to support her. This past year our Commissioners hosted Clan Kincaid tents at many Highland Games throughout the United States and Canada. I especially want to thank our Commissioners as they represent Clan Kincaid to the pub-lic and sign up new members, which helps our numbers to grow. We had 97 Life Members and 155 Annual Members in the year 2014 for a total of 252. In 2017 we had 135 Life Mem-bers and 177 Annual Members for a total of 312, an increase of 60 members! My thanks also goes out to Donna Knauss, our Membership Secretary. In addition to her other many duties, she sends out renewal letters to all Annual Members. Without these letters our memberships would dwindle. I want to express my appreciation to the Board of Officers for their support, and the input provided by our entire Clan Kincaid Team. I would be remiss if I forgot our members. We wouldn’t have a Clan if it were not for their support of Clan Kincaid Association International. We look forward to another outstanding year in 2018. Aye Yours,

David R. Kincaid (L-73)

Clan Kincaid Gathering—2019– Save the date! Madam Arabella Kincaid of Kincaid, Chief of Clan Kincaid, has accepted an invitation to be a special guest of the

Grandfather Mountain Scottish Festival in Linville, North Carolina in July of 2019.

This affords a wonderful opportunity to have another Clan Kincaid Gathering. South Appalachian Regional

Commissioner Hugh Kincaid and Ontario Commissioner James Brisbin have agree to take on the responsibility of organizing this event.

As with the several past Clan Gatherings in Scotland and the recent super successful Clan Gathering in Estes

Park, Colorado, this will be another great opportunity to celebrate our Kincaid and Scottish Heritage along with our Clan Chief at one of the premier events in North America.

You will not want to miss this opportunity to enjoy the renowned hospitality of North Carolina, the ambience of the Smoky Mountains, the thrill of Scottish dance, music and athletics and most of all the opportunity to meet new friends and renew friendships of

kith and kin - all with our Chief.

So it is time to put the second weekend of July 2019 on your calendar and await fur-ther details as they develop over the months to come.

St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit Highland Games - Submitted by Barbara Kincaid,. Michigan Commissioner (M-1179) On Saturday, August 5th, 2017 The 167th Annual Highland Games were held at the Greenmead Historical Park in Livonia, Michigan.

Once again David and I traveled an hour from home to Livonia in anticipation of the Games held there, the first Saturday of Au-gust every year. The Games take place in a huge historical park setting. So much is happening as is usually the case with most of

our Games around North America, as we enjoy the friendship and kinship of many clans and daily events. Clan Kincaid had a great location on Clan Row with many folks stopping by to learn more about our clan. Many are drawn by the large framed photograph

prominently displayed of our lovely Clan Chief, Madam Arabella. In addition, our great bold tartan brings comments on how much they like the vibrant green of our plaid. We observed a Kirkin’ of The Tartan ceremony, where we could re-member and honor the memory of departed clan members. As each clan was invited to give names of those clan members whom we have recently lost we gave forth the name of Brigadier Bill Kincaid of England in that portion of the program as we presented our tartans. We closed in prayer, giving thanks for

God’s blessings on our chief, members and clans.

Soon we left to enter the lineup for the Parade of Tartans and Mass Band Per-formance. One cannot help but be impressed with their Scots heritage as each clan is introduced to the parade viewers. We recalled 2015 when Clan Kincaid

was announced as the Honored Clan, as well as receiving the award for Best Clan Tent, which we were told was unusual for the same

clan to receive both honors in same year. We had a large group of clan members with us this year. Last year at Livonia, Madeline Kincaid Grimold by came from Illinois and joined Clan Kincaid along with her two daughters and their families. They

purchased many tartan items from the Wee Shopper and were back this year (twelve of them!) to be at our tent and walk in the parade (photos included here of the wee ones and their parents and grand-parents). It was a great day for us all. We also signed up Bill and Jill

Kincaid, a lovely couple from Brighton Michigan, that day with a family membership. Personal friends of David and I were in attend-

ance also as they tell us they enjoy being adopted Kincaids. They say we have so much fun they want to be a part of it all.

Clan Kincaid Life Member, Bill Kincaid of Ann Arbor and Dexter,

Michigan developed a scholarship for pipers, drummers and dancers through St. Andrews Society, which provides young people to study the Scottish arts and further their future in that area. It is the William Kincaid Scholarship Program and is a vital part of the Livonia Games in Michigan. The caber toss and tug of war took place with much cheering for each side. The tug of war trophy came back to Clan Row, once again victorious over the many groups who participated. It was a rewarding and beneficial time of

celebration and awareness and deemed a huge success.

At each Games event we are in contact and meet with many Scots who want to share their personal lineage so as commissioners we have the opportunity to make

our membership numbers grow. We warmly receive them to our tent. Copies of The Defender are given to prospective members, as are brochures and information along with a membership form in hopes that they will sign up on the spot, which many do. I feel it is vital to our membership to see our numbers grow and Commissioners have a special duty and privilege to make that happen. These Highland Games around the

USA and Canada are lots of fun, hard work and sharing of friendships.

Alma Highland Festival & Games - Submitted by Barbara Kincaid,.

Michigan Commissioner (M-1179)

I’m happy to report that 2017 was another great year for Clan Kincaid in Michigan. On May 27th Barbara, Michigan Commis-sioner, and David, Clan Kincaid President, hosted the Clan Kin-

caid tent on Clan Row at the 50th Annual Alma Highland Festival and Games in Alma Michigan. The trip from our home to Alma is

about a two-hour drive. As one drives into the city a promi-

nent sign declares that city as “Scotland USA”. It is a college town

and the Games are held on the campus of Alma College whose football slo-gan is “Home of The Scots”. The college has scholarships for pipers, drum-

mers and dancers. This time of year Scots from many clans descend upon this community to celebrate their Scottish heritage.

Hospitality tents abound as we prepared to meet the public and renew friendships with other clans. David and I set up our displays and met with

James Brisbin, Past President of Clan Kincaid, who had come to Alma from his home in Ontario, Canada to join us at our tent. Clan Kincaid had many visi-tors that day and we were busy recruiting potential members. Christine Au-buchon of Lansing, Michigan did in fact become an annual member that day

and walked in the parade with us at Noon. It was a rewarding time for us all.

Stone Mountain Highland Games - Submitted by Hugh Kincaid,. Southern Appalachian Commissioner (M-877)

We had the honor of representing Clan Kincaid for the first time at the 45 th Stone Mountain Highland Games, October 21st and 22nd.

Clan Goodwill Ambassador and Commissioner of Ontario, James Bris-

bin traveled to Stone Mountain, Georgia to help and share in the commeradary. We thank him immensely for his support!!

We had the opportunity to meet and reacquaint with cousins from both the Kincaid and Lennox families. Among those we visited with were Joyce Kinkead and David Lancy from Logan Utah, Julie Rodri-guez and family (North Carolina Kincaid’s) from Snellville Georgia,

William “Bill” Lennox and many others.

James and I had plenty of time to discuss the planning of an exciting opportunity for the clan in the not too distant future. The announce-

ment of this event and much more planning are to come. The games were a great success with wonderful autumn weather

and there was great interest from other clans about our tent design. Yours aye!
