News and Notes

Weed Pulling Contest--not exactly! However, there is a need for a few volunteers to help spruce up the front of our church by removing some late summer weeds. Call the office if you can help.

Our goal for the Eliza Broadus offering for State Mis-sions is $250.00. On the first Sunday of the Week of Prayer the total given was $125.00. Envelopes are available in the Atrium if you feel led to make a dona-tion.

Baptist pastor Carlyle Marney once told of a talk he had with his father. His dad said that if he had his life to live over again he’d have a stronger faith. He said his life had been plagued with doubts, questions, and worries. His son said, “I never knew that, Dad.

You always seemed so strong. How did you keep go-ing?” To which the elder Marney replied, “Well, son, I’d always be all right if I could just make it to the meeting.”

It’s true, isn’t it? Something happens “in the meeting” that we can never make happen on our own. Everyone who comes to church brings what’s on their heart. And once everyone arrives something beautiful can happen. Everybody’s fears, concerns, troubles joins everybody else’s and the result is subtraction! Our anxie-ty becomes less consuming. Our worry becomes less dreadful.

It is hard to explain, but we do draw strength from being in the presence of God and in the presence of the people of God. In the church when we come “to the meeting” we comfort one another, draw strength from one another and are then empowered to do God’s work -- not alone but together.
