Mission and history of The Danish Chemical SocietyThe Danish Chemical Society has been founded in 1879 as a society for Danishchemists and has since focused on the advancement of chemistry and theimprovement of the public recognition of chemistry. This mission has notchanged and is of even more importance today, where modern life is entirely

dependent on chemical achievements like materials research (e.g. polymers), and medicinalchemistry (e.g. drug discovery), to name just a few. The public recognition of chemistry needs moreyoung students and researchers in the various branches of chemistry to engage in discussions onimportant questions in our society. Many global problems are strongly linked to chemistry (e.g.green energy, affordable health care, clean water or the protection of our environment).

Become a member of The Danish Chemical Society and:

ü Participate in scientific meetings organized or supported by our societyü Write articles and essays in the society journal – Dansk Kemiü Apply for travel grantsü Find job offers within the society networkü Receive society awards for outstanding contributions in chemistry (e.g. PhD prizes)ü Organize local meetings for your chemistry division with support from your societyü Promote your career as an invited speaker at our national meetings

Plenary lecture Abstract – Prof. Dr. Mathias Beller

Leibniz-Institut für Katalyse an der Universität Rostock, Albert-Einstein-Str. 29a,18059 Rostock, Germany

Be Green! Sustainable Catalysis for (Practical) Organic Synthesis

Despite numerous important methodological advancements in all areas ofchemistry, still most organic synthesis as well as the industrial production ofchemicals can be improved. Currently, more than 80% of all products of thechemical industry are made via catalysis. In this regard, the development of newand more efficient catalysts constitutes a key factor for achieving a sustainableproduction of all kinds of chemicals today and in the future. Here, several major

challenges will be presented in the talk; e.g. the benign reduction of carboxylic acid derivatives.Furthermore, it will be shown that recently developed molecular-defined as well as nano-structuredbase metal catalysts enable us to perform catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processesin high yields and with unprecedented selectivity. Specific examples which demonstrate thepotential of sustainable catalytic processes will also include examples from energy technology.

Biographical Information

Matthias Beller was born in 1962. He studiedchemistry at the University of Göttingen, Germany, where he completed his PhD thesis in 1989 in thegroup of Prof. Tietze. As recipient of a Liebigscholarship, he then spent a one-year in the group ofProf. Sharpless at the MIT. From 1991 to 1995, Bellerwas an employee of Hoechst AG, where he mostrecently directed the "Homogeneous Catalysis"project in the company's central research unit. In1996 he moved to the TU München as C3 Professor(“Associate Professor”). In 1998 he relocated to the

University of Rostock to head the Institute for Organic Catalysis (IfOK) and to become full Professorfor Catalysis at the University of Rostock. Since 2006 Matthias Beller is director of the newly formedLeibniz-Institute for Catalysis, which is the largest governmental research institute for appliedcatalysis in Europe. His scientific work has been published in more than 350 original publications and review articles. Inaddition, >80 patent applications have been filed in the last decade.Matthias Beller has received several awards such as the Otto-Roelen Medal (1997), the Merck-Frost-Lectureship (2002), the Novartis-Chemistry-Lectureship (2002), the Degussa-Lecturer (2003), theNovo Nordisk-Lecturer (2005), and in 2006 the Leibniz-Price of the DeutscheForschungsgemeinschaft. In 2006 he was also awarded “Entrepreneur of the Year” of the city ofRostock and he received the German Federal Cross of Merit.Matthias Beller is head of the GDCH working group “Sustainable Chemistry” and a member of theAssociation for Technical Sciences of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanitiesas well as the Academy of Science of Hamburg.
