A pioneering brand in sun protection for children's eyes, Julbo's
commitment to opticians, health professionals and consumers is greater
than ever as it continues to raise awareness and offer the most
appropriate protection solution for children's eyes.
2. THE DANGERS OF SOLAR RADIATION FOR CHILDREN'S EYES
Children spend a lot of time outside playing or practising sports and are
therefore naturally exposed to the sun's rays.
THE CRYSTALLINE LENS IN CHILDREN'S EYES IS PERMEABLE TO UVA RAYS. IT ONLY BECOMES IMPERMEABLE TO UVA RAYS IN ADULTHOOD.
TRUE or FALSE
UV rays are more intense in the mountains
The visor of a hat provides adequate sun protection for children's
eyes
In the mountains or at the seaside, if the sky is
overcast, there's no need to wear sunglasses.
UV RAYS ARE MORE INTENSE IN THE MOUNTAINS
TRUEIn the mountains, the intensity of UV rays increases by 10% for every 1000 metres of altitude. Therefore it's not just the brightness and glare from snow that we need protection against.
THE VISOR OF A HAT PROVIDES ADEQUATE SUN PROTECTION FOR CHILDREN'S EYES
FALSEThis is because a significant proportion of radiation comes from glare: - on snow: up to 90% of glare- on water: up to 30% of glare- on sand: up to 28% of glare
IN THE MOUNTAINS OR AT THE SEASIDE, IF THE SKY IS OVERCAST, THERE'S NO NEED TO WEAR SUNGLASSES.
FALSEClouds filter out no more than 10% of UV rays. Also, people often get sunburnt in these conditions because it's not necessarily hot and they don't take precautions to protect themselves. The same thing goes for their eyes.
3. ADVICE ON CHOOSING THE CORRECT LENS
SUN PROTECTION INDEX:
Sunlight filters must comply with European standard EN1836, and more specifically:
• block 100% of UV radiation• prevent glare from visible light, • have sufficient mechanical resistance (impact test), • be of sufficient optical quality (optical class 1 or 2). 3 or 4
JULBO JUNIOR LENSES
All Julbo sunglasses models are fitted with our Spectron 3 or 4 and Spectron 4 Baby lenses. In order to meet safety and comfort requirements, these lenses are made from polycarbonate (mineral lenses are dangerous if broken). They are available in index 3 for multi-purpose protection and in index 4 for optimum protection in highly exposed environments and for babies and toddlers.
The Polar Junior is a polarized lens specially adapted for children's eyewear. It's lighter and has a polarizing filter to cut out glare (e.g.: on the surface of water) and therefore allows better reading of terrain and improves contrast.
The Zebra lens is a photochromic lens available on some sports models. The level of protection changes to suit the conditions. It varies between protection 2 and 4 and allows children to wear sunglasses all day long, even when the weather changes.
4. ADVICE ON CHOOSING THE CORRECT FRAME
FRAMES FOR KIDS
Sunglasses can only protect children if they wear them!
As well as this obvious fact, the needs and morphology of children must be
taken into account: more movement, more impact and specific facial shapes
(flatter noses in babies and toddlers, etc.)
And these needs change as they get older.
So it's important to choose suitable frames.
JULBO EXPERTISE
• Eye protection:
- frames must provide sufficient coverage to block light coming in from different sides.
- the size of the frame must be suitable for the face.
• The shape of the frame must take account of the specific features of children's faces:
- flat face
- low nose bridge
Every age will have its own specific needs in terms of frame, choice of lenses and colors...
