Welcome to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and our 25th Season of presenting exceptional performing arts events, educational outreach programs and live music. We are excited about celebrating the arts with our performing arts events that include eight Houston Symphony concerts, a performance by Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera as well as our 19th Annual Children’s Festival.

The Pavilion is known as the Summer Home of the Houston Symphony, Home Away from Home of Houston Ballet and a presenting venue for Houston Grand Opera and the Texas Music Festival Orchestra.

Tonight, we hope you enjoy our classical concert featuring the Houston Symphony and conductor Fabien Gabel. This concert also features the gold medal winner of the 2014 Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Young Artist Competition, Lin Ma. It’s sure to excite all classical music lovers.

Our next concert July 24 is The Music of Billy Joel with Michael Cavanaugh. Along with Cavanaugh, the Houston Symphony performs the hits of Billy Joel. It’s sure to be an exciting show, so make sure you come back on the 24th.

Recently, The Pavilion was honored to be recognized in the June 21, 2014, issue of “Billboard” magazine. “Billboard” is one of the industry-leading magazines that reaches thousands of readers that include music professionals, record label executives, concert promoters and artists. The article features the venue’s 25 seasons of operation as well as the history of The Pavilion and the partnership with Live Nation.

The Pavilion provides free mezzanine and lawn seating for all our wonderful performing arts events, thanks to our generous sponsors. At all symphonies and at the ballet and opera, guests are welcome to bring a picnic in their seat or on the hill. Lawn chairs also are provided for free at these events. Please take advantage of this free offer and bring your family, friends and neighbors to The Pavilion this season to enjoy an evening under the stars. You will be glad you did.

I am looking forward to a spectacular 25th Season and hope to see you on the hill.

Fabien gabel, conductorAmong the leading conductors of his generation, Fabien Gabel was appointed music director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec in 2011 for an initial four year term. The 2012-13 Season, his first as music director, was marked by consistent critical acclaim for his performances, which generated a renewed sense of excitement among audiences in Québec City and beyond.

Gabel first attracted international attention in 2004 as winner of the prestigious Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London, which gave him the opportunity to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). This subsequently led to his appointment as the orchestra’s assistant conductor for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. Since then, the LSO has engaged him regularly as have the London Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO).

Born in Paris to a family of accomplished musicians, Gabel began studying trumpet at the age of six, honing his skills at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, which awarded him a First Prize in trumpet in 1996 and later at the MusikHochschule of Karlsruhe.

lin Ma, clarinetBorn in Hunan, China, Lin Ma is currently pursuing his artist diploma at Rice University under the tutelage of Richie Hawley. He earned his bachelor of music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he studied with Richard Hawkins. Ma also has received instruction from Yehuda Gilad at Idyllwild Arts Academy and Yuanfu Huang at The Middle School at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

Ma was selected to participate in the Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra debut tour at Carnegie Hall in New York City and The Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. He also has performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Also notably, he soloed with the National Repertory Orchestra after winning the NRO Concerto Competition. Recently, Ma worked with the Houston Grand Opera on its production of “Das Rheingold.”

Sponsor Spotlight

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is proud to highlight Galaxy FBO as a performing arts sponsor in the 2014 season. Founded in 2006, Galaxy FBO is part of Black Forest Ventures, a private asset management firm in The Woodlands, Texas. This year, Galaxy FBO is a sponsor of Children’s Festival, focusing on expanding activities on the top of the hill.

“As the Gateway to North Houston, our multi-million dollar facility serves as the impressive entry point to our community,” said Jeremy Gee, vice president for Galaxy FBO. “We see our facility as an amenity to the community, in line with the Mitchell family’s commitment and passion to bring various unmatched amenities that separate our com-munity from the rest.”

This year, activities on the hill during Children’s Festival include strapping on a parachute for races, building kites and testing them out and other aviation-related activities, making Galaxy FBO an ideal partner. Currently in its 19th year, Children’s Festival brought in more than 12,000 guests in 2013.

“We are thrilled to be a part of The Pavilion’s performing arts season that inspires young generations to be more involved in the arts,” Gee said. “Like music that feeds young minds, aviation feeds the soul. The aviation industry is suffering from a lack of interest from younger talents so we hope our involvement with the Children’s Festival will inspire young souls to get more involved in flying and pursue a career in aviation.”

Galaxy FBO serves general and corporate travel based in the Lone Star Executive Airport. With a new 15-acre facility that consists of two identical 50,000-square feet hangar spaces and a three story building that features Black Walnut Café with a view of the Runway 14-32, Galaxy FBO is the gateway to those traveling to North Houston and Montgomery County.

Recently a guest posted on The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s Facebook page about an experience she had buying tickets. “Janet” typed “Woodlands Pavilion tickets” in her search engine and was led to a phony site. She paid $326 for a pair of tickets and just one day before the concert, she was informed by this site that they did not actually have tickets for her. Thankfully “Janet” got her money back, but other guests have not been that lucky.

Often guests try to use a search engine to find The Pavilion’s website and are led to misleading pages instead. The Pavilion’s official website is www.woodlandscenter.org. By typing this URL into your browser instead of using a search engine, you’re much less likely to be taken to an unofficial site. Remember that Ticketmaster/Live Nation is The Pavilion’s only official ticket provider and we can only guarantee tickets purchased through these sites. Using the

secondary market to buy and sell tickets, while legal in Texas, is a very big gamble.

Many guests get frustrated with tickets being bought and sold on the secondary market for more than face value, but as long as there is demand, scalpers can continue to buy tickets from The Pavilion and mark them up to be bought by unsuspecting buyers. Encourage your friends and family to buy their tickets directly from The Pavilion Box Office or Ticketmaster.com/LiveNation.com, espe-cially if a concert is not yet sold out. Some guests go straight to the secondary market first without even checking to see if The Pavilion still has tickets available. Taking this extra step can not only save you money, but protect you from a potential scam.

For more information on buying tickets safely, visit The Pavilion’s blog at woodlandspavilion.blogspot.com.

New Texas Craft House in The Pavilion’s South Plaza

If you’re looking for something a little different to indulge in during your next visit to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, visit the Texas Craft House in the South Plaza.

ARAMARK installed the Texas Craft House this year in time for the Bruce Springsteen concert May 6. The idea was to create a destination location and unique beverage choices for our guests.

At the Craft House you can find only Texas Craft beers from local brew-eries. Beers include selections from Southern Star, Lone Pint, Karbach and St. Arnold. These options were selected from guests’ input from

The Pavilion’s Facebook page.

Also offered are new Crafted cocktails. Crafted cocktails are starting to grow throughout the country in order to cater to guests who are not beer drinkers. Some of the premium cocktails include Long Island Ice Tea, Rum Runner, Sex on the Beach and Electric Lemon-

ade. Master Blenders from Specialty Blends in Carrollton, Texas, craft and blend the drinks to internationally recognized flavor profiles of the drinks.

“With the growing popularity of craft beers, we wanted to make sure we had what our concertgoers wanted,” said Jesse Collier, general man-ager of ARAMARK. “We looked at best practices at our other ARAMARK locations throughout the country and Canada and decided that the best choice for us here at The Pavilion was to build a beer wall that could support a wide variety of flavor profiles and the ease of changing out brands as demands change from event to event due to the demo-graphics of each show. “

ARAMARK sourced a local fabricator, Haggard’s Country Store in Plantersville, Texas, to build the bar tables. The five belly bar tables are from Jack Daniels Whiskey Barrels.

Drinks at the Craft House are $13 and large beers are $15. Come check it out at the next Pavilion concert.

This summer The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is hosting two Education for Tomorrow Alliance (EfTA) interns as a part of the Student Internship Pro-gram (SIP). The Pavilion has participated in this program for many years.

SIP offers bright, motivated rising high school seniors hands-on learning opportunities in their desired career fields. SIP internships are designed to provide valuable work experiences for students who are just starting to explore career options. The program offers a first step toward furthering their education and deciding what direction students want to take in life. In addition, the application process offers insights to the job search and introduces students to the value of networking and developing transferrable skills that can eventually be included in a resume.

Alexis Danz and Rachel Vaughn are working in the development department with Leslie Williams, volunteer and special events coordinator for The Pavilion. They are helping coordinate fundraisers and promoting The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer organization of The Pavilion.

Danz attends Caney Creek High School where she is a varsity cheer-leader and a trumpet player in the band. She enjoys reading and going on long runs during her free time. Music and film production is her passion. She was inspired by her role model and audio/video production teacher James Fraser to go after her dream of directing. Her future goals consist of becoming a student at Oklahoma University and pursuing a career as a television director.

Vaughn loves to sing and dance traditional Chinese folk dances and has performed at The Pavilion as a member of The Woodlands High School Varsity Mixed Choir. She enjoys working with children at her job at Kumon Math and Reading Center. Her pet peeve is abandoned shopping carts in parking lots and she often spends time putting the carts back in their cart corrals. The daughter of a librarian and a professor, Vaughn spends much of her time at the library and likes reading, writing and editing. In the future, she would like to be in the publishing or marketing industries.

The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Reaches Outto the Community Through Various Events and ProgramsEducational outreach is an integral part of the mission of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Some form of music, dance, drama or song can capture the attention and engagement of all young people. Consequently, The Pavilion has developed programs to support fine arts students, offer academic and social incentives, foster new audi-ences and provide community enrichment opportunities.

Additionally, through theCommunity Ticket Program,The Pavilion offers thousands of complimentary ticketsfor its performing arts events to economically challenged students and families within the Greater Houston area, as well as to numerous charities and senior citizen organizations every year.

The Community Share Program at The Pavilion allows other nonprofit organizations in the area to have a vendor booth at performing arts events throughout the season. The booth gives these organizations the chance to promote and create awareness for their cause. Some organizations that have taken part in the program include CASA, Montgomery County Emergency Assistance, Montgomery County Food Bank and American Diabetes Association.

“I enjoy working with The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion as a commu-nity partner. The Pavilion, the staff and volunteers always make an effort to create an enthusiastic and fun venue for every event,” said Margie Taylor, director of marketing and development for Montgomery County

Emergency Assistance. “The tent and table are prepared for easy set up. As a partner we bring our agency information and add to the excitement with games geared for families. It’s a great way to market our events to the community.”

The Pavilion also offers many programs that support fine arts students within the Greater Houston area. These programs include scholar-ships for students studying fine arts, educational experiences with the Houston Symphony for area students and orchestral performances by young musicians that the public can enjoy.

For example, the Young Talent Spotlight encourages the artists of to-morrow by exposing them to the joy of performing in front of a live audience. Past performers include Payne Academy of Performing Arts, The Woodlands College Park High School Orchestra, The Woodlands School of Rock, Class Act Productions, North Harris Performing Arts, Christian Youth Theater and many more.

Please take advantage of The Pavilion’s outreach opportunities by emailing [email protected].

CHIldRENThe Pavilion is a family-friendly venue and we love to see families at our performing arts events. However, please be courteous of both the orches-tra and those around you by keeping youngsters from talking loudly and running around during the performance. Even if you are seated on the hill, loud children can be very distracting for everyone. We want all of our guests to have the most enjoyable concert experience possible.

ElECTRONIC dEVICES Take a break from the outside world! Please turn off all cellphones and other audible electronics. Photography and videography are NOT allowed during the performances, including with cellphones, at the request of the artists. Tablets, such as iPads and Kindles, are not permitted into the venue because they are a distraction to other guests and the artists.

lATE SEATINgFashionably late? If you arrive after a performance has started, our ushers will do their best to seat you during an appropriate pause in the program. For certain performances, and at the request of the artist, guests seated in the orchestra section might have to wait until a transition is made between songs to proceed to their seats.

duRINg THE PERFORMANCEGuests should refrain from entering and exiting their seats while a per-formance is in progress. If you must leave your seat, please proceed quickly and quietly to the nearest aisle or ask the nearest usher for assis-tance. Please be courteous to other members of the audience.

APPlAuSENot sure when to applaud and when not to? A good rule of thumb is to watch the conductor. The conductor should let you know when a piece is over by lowering both arms and turning to face the audience.

AFTER THE CONCERTBravo! As the applause dies down, the performers will put their instruments away and leave the stage. The house lights will be turned on so guests can exit safely. TO PICNIC, OR NOT TO PICNIC?Picnics are welcome at all performing arts events at The Pavilion. Guests can bring in any type of food item; however, beverages can not be brought into the venue. Guests are welcome to bring empty water bottles to fill at water fountains or to purchase beverages at our concessions stands.

After searching for volunteer opportunities in The Woodlands, Sean Kenneth Connelly joined The Pavilion Partners, the official volunteer or-ganization of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, in 2012 and knew it was the perfect match for him. Connelly’s primary motivation in joining Partners was the ability to work with and serve others, something he did

often as a flight attendant for seven years.

“I love the fact that The Pavilion is a nonprofit organization serving the performing arts in the community. There’s a strong need for that,”Connelly said. “But for me, I wantedto get out there and work with others and serve the community in whatever way I could.”

Connelly jumped into the organiza-tion immediately by volunteering for the 17th Annual Children’s Festival in

2012. After being involved with the festival for two years, he recalls an exciting moment as a volunteer from the 18th Annual Children’s Festival in 2013, after when a speaker blew out on stage.

“I remember seeing smoke coming from a speaker and it was like the Boy Scout in me just kicked in,” Connelly said. “I ran onto the stage and quickly dragged it off stage before the kids saw any flames. It was definitely a memorable experience.”

In his spare time, Connelly enjoys attending social events and concerts at The Pavilion with other Partners. Though he has seen so many, he has especially enjoyed Depeche Mode and Boston. Connelly also has enjoyed being exposed to new cultural experiences, like the Houston Grand Opera.

“I was also very impressed with the opera’s performance of ‘La bohéme’ last year,” Connelly said. “I never considered myself an opera person but the acting was great and the subtitles were really helpful. It definitely sparked an interest in opera for me.”

In addition to serving as a member of the Children’s Festival commit-tee, Connelly also is involved with the craft committee and is known for dressing up as Darth Vader at Hocus Pocus Pops for the past two years. Connelly also volunteers with Northwoods Unitarian Universalist Church, Creative Life Spiritual Center, IONs, MPK Mankind Project and Habitat for Humanity.

Born in Fort Hood, Texas, Connelly was raised in Orange, Connecticut. After serving in the Army in Germany during the Cold War, he returned to Texas in the 1980’s. He enjoys canoeing in Lake Woodlands, riding his Harley Davidson and dirt biking with his daughter.

Volunteer SpotlightThe Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Sponsors Support the Arts

As a nonprofit performing arts venue, The Cynthia Woods MitchellPavilion relies on the generosity and participation of local businesses and organizations to provide the community with the best performing arts programming in the area. These sponsors contribute in many ways, including monetary donations, providing interactive activities in the plazas during events and supplying volunteers at The Pavilion’s educa-tional outreach programs.

Some sponsors, like Woodforest National Bank, have been supporters of The Pavilion for almost its entire existence. A sponsor for 23 seasons, Woodforest has a presence at each performing arts event and also has the naming rights for The Pavilion’s VIP Club.

“Being a community bank, Woodforest National Bank aligns itself with opportunities to give back to the communities we serve,” said Robert E. Marling, Jr., CEO of Woodforest National Bank. “Through The Pavilion’s performing arts programs, we are able to be a small part of enhancing the cultural enrichment of so many.”

While Woodforest supports the arts through the season, Marling cites Children’s Festival as his favorite Pavilion program.

“It would be hard to choose a favorite, as all programs are exceptional in their genres,” Marling said. “The Annual Children’s Festival, with its vast number of participants, allows even more people to enjoy and experience a ‘Pavilion moment.’”

Other sponsors have only recently begun supporting The Pavilion’s performing arts events. Most recently, Texas Children’s Hospital—The Woodlands signed on as the newest performing arts sponsor.

“The enrichment provided by The Pavilion’s programs to the community and families in The Woodlands is extremely valuable,” said Lisa Yelenick, director of marketing and public relations for Texas Children’s Hospital. “Part of Texas Children’s mission is to play an integral role and be a committed member of the communities where we provide healthcare services.”

Check out “Encore” for a complete list of all our performing arts sponsors. The next time that you enter The Pavilion gates for a performing arts event, make sure to visit the booths in the plazas and thank our sponsors for supporting the arts in your community.

Biographies

Michael CavanaughMichael Cavanaugh is a char-ismatic performer, musician and recording artist, made famous in Billy Joel’s hit Broadway musical MOVIN’ OUT. Cavanaugh was hand-picked by Billy Joel and re-ceived numerous accolades including Grammy and Tony award nominations.

Cavanaugh’s recent release “in color” was produced by Rob Mathes (who also pro-duced Panic! at the Disco, Avril Lavigne and Celine Dion). Cavanaugh hears and sees

music “in color,” hence the title. The CD features nine hit songs, which pay homage to rock legends that have influenced him over the years like Pete Townshend, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, The Michael Stanley Band, Joe Cocker/Dave Mason, Led Zeppelin and Big Joe Turner.

“With each interpretation, I wanted to bring something new to the tracks yet maintain their original integrity” Cavanaugh said. The CD also includes four new songs, of which “Miles Away” and “Give It Time” were written by Cavanaugh. The mission in the studio was to capture his talent as an exciting performer and to create a direct con-nection between the listener and the artist. The CD captures that inti-mate connection.

Of all the songs he’s performed over the years, this collection best rep-resents Cavanaugh the musician, the writer, the performer and fan of the artist who first performed them.

Getting his start at age seven, working his way through the hard scrab-ble clubs of Cleveland, then on to the Piano Bars of Orlando and Las Vegas, to his incredible run on Broadway, these songs represent Michael Cavanaugh as a true American artist.

Stuart Chafetz, conductorStuart Chafetz is a conductor with an affable podium demeanor and a keen sense of audience engagement. He is increasingly in demand with orchestras across the continent.

This season, in addition to this appearance in Houston and The Woodlands, Chafetz is on the podium in Baltimore, Indianapolis and Milwaukee. Previous con-ducting appearances include the orchestras of Buffalo, New York, Chicago, Detroit, San Fran-cisco, Toronto, Calgary, Alberta, Edmonton and Tampa, Florida.

He previously held posts as resident conductor of the Milwaukee Sym-phony Orchestra and associate conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. As principal timpanist of the Honolulu Symphony for 20 years, Chafetz also conducted the annual Nutcracker performances with Ballet Hawaii and principals from the American Ballet Theatre. It was during that time that Chafetz led numerous concerts with the Maui Pops Orchestra.

Chafetz maintains an ongoing special relationship with the Naples Philharmonic. In the summers, he spends his time at the Chautauqua Institution, a community on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in south-western New York, where he conducts the annual Fourth of July and Opera Pops.

He makes his home near San Francisco with his wife, Ann Krinitsky. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music performance from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati and a master’s from the Eastman School of Music.
