June was a busy month. We had twoConcours; the Ability Connection Colo-rado show at the ACC site on SundayJune 8, and the RMJC Concours at theCussler Museum on Sunday June 21.The major difference between thesetwo events was the weather. TheACC Concours was turned into a maddash for the exits when a nasty stormvisited from the northwest about 1:00o’clock . At one time it seemed as ifhalf the remaining visitors to the showwere huddled under the RMJC tents. Takingtents down and packing up in the middle of adriving rainstorm took teamwork and a lot ofhelp. Thanks to all who showed up for theevent, given the dire weather forecasts, andthanks to all who helped set up and take downthe RMJC corral. Special thanks to Frank Oak-ley, Bill Beeson, Dwight Eisnach, and DonLeach for their help staking out the club corrals, and setting up the Club signs on Saturday.RMJC did about 60% of the work laying out theClub positions for the show. Terri Armstrong ofACC was very happy we pitched in to get thatwork done. Also, thanks to the Kennedy’s, theOrr’s and again Don Leach for showing up at“0-Dark Thirty” to help position cars and set uptents on Sunday morning. Even though wehad some rain, and didn’t get the type of daywe hoped for, RMJC and its members madethe day memorable, and an ACC (CP) show wewon’t soon forget.

RMJC’s Cats at the Cussler Concours wasn’twithout its own weather drama, as we all heldour collective breath as a storm slid around tothe north. Besides that, the day offered a laidback enjoyable car show atmosphere.

We did have some incredibly close scores, however, that generated good car show drama. In C16, the XK8 class, the difference between1st and 3rd Place in the Championship divisionwas 3/100 of a point. Hats off and manythanks to Gary and Judy George, and Steveand Deanie Kennedy for volunteering and exe-cuting the Concours Chair duties, and puttingon a great 2014 Concours. Thanks to all whohelped put up tents, set up breakfast and lunch,

and the general toting andlifting required by an eventthis size. The Cussler Mu-seum was a superb venuefor the Concours. Therewas definitely a striking con-trast between the old carsinside the museum and thenewer Jags outside the mu-seum.

In July we have two funevents coming up. The Summer Party and theRMJC Sanctioned Slalom. We will hold theAnnual Summer Party on Saturday, July 12 atthe Redrupp’s. No tents to put up, and if itrains, we can go inside their lovely home. Thisis always a fun event, with good participationby Club members. Don’t forget to RSVP andplan to bring a delicious dish to compliment thegreat menu they have planned.

The RMJC Sanctioned Slalom will be July 20that Front Range Airport. Get in the practice lapsyou will need to succeed in the Western StatesSlalom in September. Remember, if you arevolunteering for the Slalom at Western States,it is important that you attend this slalom andthe short training we will be offering during theevent. We will need several teams to do Tech-nical Inspection, spotting, flagging, etc, so all ofthose positions will be covered at the July Sla-lom. Also, if you do well at our Slalom, and dowell at the Western States Slalom, you willcompete for Regional Slalom points.

Everyone needs to be checking out the West-ern States Schedules, to make plans when youare going to come down to Colorado Springs tovolunteer and participate in the events. Thisevent is a National JCNA event, and we wantto have lots of volunteers and lots of participa-tion from our club. See the documents in thisCat Tales for more information.

Two great Concours are in the history book andmany more great activities coming up! Weneed your registrations for Western States sobe sure and get out there and… Take the leap

!st Annual Colorado Concours Motoring Legends Forum Benefiting

Ability Connection Colorado ReportOn the Friday before the Concours at ACC (formerly known as the CP Show) Bob & Iattended the forum held at Audi Denver. The panel included Jim Strandberg ( RMJC visitedhis shop High Mountain Classics in Berthoud a few years ago), Denise McCluggage, famousPorsche & Ferrari driver & journalist, and Dennis Little, car designer with GM for over 30yrs.

A few of the cars that will be at Sunday’s Concours were on display, but the evening was allabout the featured panelist. Much of the discussion was on the restoration costs & valua-tions seen in the collector car market. Since there was an unrestored “barn find” Maseration display, the panelists opinion varied on the “preservation class” vs “restored class” bestdirection for this car. Much of this was due to the recent sale of an unrestored 1956Mercedes Gullwing for $1.8 million which exceeded the $1.4 mil price of an almost identicalGullwing at the same sale.

Ms. McCluggage always is a delight to hear as she recounted her desire to “fulfill anyman’sdesire” by offering a co-drive at Sebring in 1961 in her Ferrari 250 GT SWB to Allan Eager asax player from New York. They won their class. One had the impression that her life hasbeen one of no adventure left untried. If you have a chance to see her at any event, doexperience the opportunity to listen to her speak of her good friends, Phil Hill, Jimmy Clark,Fangio and von Trips. She was always stood out in her white racing helmet with red polkadots. Bob & I have one of her great photos of Jimmy Clark racing his Lotus in Mexico whichshe graciously signed. It is one of our treasures. …..Pat Grossman

Ability Connection Colorado Exotic Car Show at ACC – June 8th, 2014We had 30 Jaguars in our corral to participate in the 31st Annual Exotic Car Show and Con-cours d’ Elegance. There were also a few others being shown by Stevinson Imports; one ofwhich was a stunning black F-Type Coupe. Jaguar Colorado Springs joined us with an XFAWD and an XF Convertible. We had some no shows due to the impending weather andthey were missed. Dennis Orr headed up the judging teams and they got to work. It was avery cool day and while watching the skies we got lunch underway a little early. Good thingtoo! Just about the time we got everything put away, the rain started. Lucky for us, we had3 tents to all huddle under; the rain lasted about 30 minutes and the venue cleared out byhalf very quickly. We made the best of it though, we always do; this club has a lot of troup-ers!! By the time we finished getting the tents down and loaded up, there was a tornado si-ren going off and state patrol was telling us all to go inside Arapahoe Community Collegebuildings! We all said nah and headed home. Check out the scores!!

Jaguar is embarking on its first ever recreation project and plans to build six brand-newLightweight E-Types. The cars will fill in the missing six chassis numbers from 1963’s origi-nally planned 18 car run. They will make their debut later this summer but get in line earlyto get one! (Editor …found this, but don’t know if its true; might be a 100 point car!)

Larenda Hershey’s Celebration of LifeAround 30 folks attended a Celebration of Life for Larenda on Monday, June 16th. Larenda’shusband Dave’s son Kevin and daughter-in-law Gayle were with him. Thom and LisalynnBuckley, owners of Jaguar Colorado Springs, graciously hosted the celebration at the dealer-ship with a BBQ and libations for all. As we all fawned over the beautiful new Jaguars, includ-ing two new F-Type Coupes, I could hear Larenda whispering, “When are you going to buythis one, it has your name written on it Cyndi,” as she had said to me so many times before.

Thom Buckley, Howard Mumm, and Al Thaut reflected on her unwavering contributions to bothJCSC and RMJC and how much she will be missed. Her sincere caring, calming demeanor, dry sense of humor, dedication to family and loving friendship to many will be rememberedalways. Larenda’s spirit was felt by all. ….Cyndi

Collector Car Council of Colorado, Minutes of Meeting, 4 June 2014

Horseless Carriage license plate, change in application procedure: County Clerks are no lon-ger able to issue new HC plates due to the proliferation of specialty plates. An application has tobe submitted, a temporary tag is issued, and the new plates are mailed by a contractor hired bythe state.

Chrome Plating: Denver Bumper has closed and no longer is available for plating. The numberof shops still doing plating is shrinking, and out of state businesses are among the few remaining.
