The Cumberland Road

The Cumberland Road - 1837By Esme Rubinstein

What is the Cumberland Road? The Cumberland Road was the first road to ever be nationally built. It was primarily made of stone, earth, and gravel.

Bridges, Changes, and MoreThere were a variety of bridges on the Cumberland Road made of stone, wood, or iron. The roads began to be worn down after awhile so many parts of the road were macadamized.A traveller along the Cumberland Road could expect to pass macadam, plank, rutted, or washed out roads.

Where is the Cumberland Road?At first, in 1819, it went from Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling, West Virginia. In the late 1830s, the road was extended to the west more. In the end, the road started at Cumberland, Maryland and stopped at Vandalia, Illinois. It was supposed to reach Missouri, but after the Panic of 1837 funding went dry.

The road passed through Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

CCWhy is the Cumberland Road so important? It was the first road to the Northwest Territory and the only for several years. It gave people a way to go west and settle there. In fact, the road was intended to civilize the Northwest Territory.Because it was funded by federal funds, it lead the government to be involved in the further building of roads.
