Upward Season is Just Around the Corner

saturday and sunday, october 23-24

God told his people in Joshua 1:3 (KJV, HCSB) that The Promised Land was already theirs in reality, and that they only needed to, by faith, make it theirs in experience. Jesus told his disciples, in John 4:35-38, that the fields were already ripe for harvest, and that he was sending them out to reap what they have not worked for. The point of both accounts is the same. As we look out at our community, we are looking at territory where God is already at work in people’s lives. Our task then, is to go join God in what He is already doing, so that we can share in His blessings.

Rescue for churches should have three components: come to, go to, and be with activities. Worship services are “come to” events. Mission trips are “go to” projects. But what about “be with” activities? I firmly believe that the biggest reason that many sincere Christians aren’t regularly sharing their faith, is simply that they no longer find themselves spending time with lost people. Changing this trend requires pro-activity. (continued on next page)

practices begin the week of november 30

Upward Sports is a first-class sports experience that emphasizes healthy competition, sportsmanship, skills building and fun, versus the “win-at-all-costs” mentality found in many children’s sports leagues. Currently, more than 500,000 children (K5-sixth grade) participate in Upward Sports leagues. For over 14 years, Upward Sports has been conducting exciting children’s sports leagues and camps in the US and around the world. (continued from cover) On October 23-24, Dr. David Wheeler will be our guest to train and challenge us to become pro-active in being with lost people, and in sharing our faith with them. Dr. Wheeler will be training us to be part of a pilot project of the north American Mission Board, called Homes for Hope. We will have a training session on that Saturday, and then be challenged on that Sunday to take part in the project.

So what is Homes for Hope? It’s a concerted effort to claim our individual neighborhoods for Christ. It will involve: infor-mation gathering, prayer walking, acts of service, inviting folks into our homes, and inviting them to special events this Christmas. In other words, it will be training and a challenge to pro-actively do together, what we all know we should be doing.

By the way, remember what happened when God’s children took action and entered The Promised Land? It became theirs in experience. And remember what happened when Jesus’ disciples took action and went out with the Gospel? This newsletter is produced by a church that exists because they took action! Please make plans now to take action and be here for the Homes for Hope weekend, October 23-24.

Her Version by Dr. Ralph Carter | Pastor

I love teachIng Scout new thIngS. every grandparent has to like doing that. But sometimes it can

get you or them in trouble. Last week in her Sunday School class, the teacher asked the class, “Does anyone know who

Peter is in the new Testament?” When no one responded she said, “Well, he wasn’t the Peter Piper who picked a peck

of pickled peppers.”

Another one was about Fuzzy Wuzzy. In case you can’t recall it – it goes –

Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. So Fuzzy Wuzzy, wasn’t

so Fuzzy, wuz he? The first time I said that to her, her only response

was “nope!” She hadn’t seen it as a rhetorical question, but rather one

that deserved an answer.

Well, a week and a half after my surgery she spent the morning with

me, keeping me company. I decided I would teach her a verse of scripture. I

taught her to quote the first half of Psalm 27:1. It goes like this: “The Lord is my

light and my salvation. Of whom shall I be afraid?” Her response upon hearing it

the first time was perfect. She looked at me and said “nobody.” So now when she

quotes it, she includes the answer. “The Lord is my Light and my Salvation;

whom should I fear? nobody!” I believe the Lord probably likes her version.

thank you So much for your partIcIpatIon In greenhouSe SeSSIon 1. If you are looking for a very practical class to help you use the Bible for everyday life then sign up for my class (416 How to Use the Bible in Real Life- Session 2). So many people are intimidated by the Bible. Let’s be honest, the Bible can be a tough read! Its shear length and different types of writings makes it difficult for some to grasp. Many just give up after trying to read the Bible on their own. The Bible is true and relevant.

Here is Paul’s charge to young Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:16-17: All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. So come and join us as we learn how to use our Bible in day-to-day life! you will not be sorry.

thIS october ISSue of the creek-SIde finds your staff thinking about next year. We have our annual staff planning retreat during this month as well as budget proposals for 2011. Following are some of the things that we may discuss:

· How can we do a better job with our misson of Rescue, Grow and Serve.

· Are we any closer to having a children’s building?· Do we need to add another service?· How will our giving be affected during these unsure

economic times?

All of these questions (and many more) are sure to be discussed during this October planning session.

Here are some things that may not be discussed, but I will be thinking about:

· How much weight will I gain this year? · Will my wife get a job? · How long will my old car run?· Who else is going to pay on my daughter’s wedding? · Is 60 the new 40?· The Tie. In or Out?

Heavy items are on my mind for 2011.

ahhh...fall. my favorIte tIme of the year. This fall some of us have been studying the book of James on Wednesday nights in The Greenhouse. James is a wonderful book. One of the big points James wants to make is that real faith has action. So that is what we are going to do. The High School fall retreat is set for november 19-21 at LookUp Lodge. But be fore-warned because this is not going to be your normal youth retreat. Usually, retreats are centered on growing or rescuing, but not this year. This year we are going to put our faith into action and serve others. There will be several different service projects that will keep us busy all weekend long. Cost is $60 and you can sign up beginning October 17 at www.brushycreek.org. Hope you will come serve with us!

thank you So much for your prayers as I led the team to India. I can’t wait to tell you all about it. As you know, it is Missions Month! Please spend time praying with your family about what you will give to our missions offering this month. This is a very important offering that enables our missionaries all over the world to rescue those who are dying without Christ. Also decide what your family will do in 2011 to rescue and serve. It is a good idea to begin saving now for a trip next year. Many people request money for mission trips for Christmas. And, most importantly, pray! Pray that God would send workers and that He would bring many to faith in Him! Pray for our missionaries who are away from friends and family for the sake of the gospel. Pray especially for Jenn Sims, David edwards, and the Hepners as they serve overseas.

JeSuS never promISed that lIfe would be eaSy. He actually pretty much guaranteed there would be difficulty in this life. The good news is, Jesus never leaves us nor forsakes us! He wants us to depend on Him for everything because His strength is sufficient for any pain or addiction.

Students often mask their pain and hurt and seek what the world offers as a solution for their problems. These worldly solutions often turn into addictions and secret struggles that carry over into adulthood.

Life Hurts God Heals has become a movement among today’s youth that is radically transforming lives and setting students free from pain and addiction! It is a program that offers hope to the hopeless and help for those in bondage to sin. If your kid is struggling with any kind of addiction, depression, rebellion, or pain, this ministry will provide life-long tools that the Lord can use to heal them and give them new hope!

each Monday, we meet in the ARC youth room at 6 p.m. for snacks and fellowship before we begin our Life Hurts God Heals service. Please register today and join many other students on the path to recovery! For more information about this ministry, please go to www.brushy-creek.org.

We need your help! We are still in need of the following: adult leaders, greeters, hallway and parking lot monitors, people for registration/sign-in table, food servers, and prayer warriors.

We averaged over 50 students each week during our first LHGH session, and we believe that even more will come this school year. Please pray about how you can help serve in this ministry and contact me as soon as possible to sign up. God bless and thanks for the wonderful privilege of ministry I have here at BCBC.

preSchool parentS, I hope your child is enjoying the new Sunday school year and looking forward to coming to their class every week. The two, three, and four-year-olds will have a take home paper each week which will have an activity and review of their lesson that day. Please ask them about their Bible story and what they learned that day. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please let me know. We want every child to associate church and God with happy feelings.

One last reminder is to please wash your hands very often. We have sanitizer dispensers as you exit the preschool hall-ways that are also available. School is back in full swing, and this will help to reduce the spread of germs.

Do you remember the Hope and Help for the Single Mom Conference that we hosted back in May here at BCBC? Take time to read these testimonies from some of the moms who attended.

Thanks again for an outstanding confer-ence with Lori Little. Just wanted to share what happened the next day to one of the single moms in my group. Kimber was at a thrift shop with her sister and decided to look for a Bible version that would be easily understood. She wanted to follow Lori’s example and begin to start reading the Psalms and Proverbs daily to her three-year-old son. She found The Message Bible priced at $2. When she got to the counter, the lady said that she hated charging anything for a Bible. Kimber replied that she should probably be charged something and as a result of God’s provision, she is the owner of a new Bible for $0.25. God is so good.

- Leigh

Thank-you so much for the wonderful and uplifting evening last night. The care that went into making every detail beautiful did not go unnoticed. I am single again and came with my daughter, Amberly, who has a three-year-old daughter. I’ve been praying for sometime that she would get involved in church again and especially with other young women she could relate to. What a blessing the entire evening was! I will give my daughter the book I received for being the “Oldest Single Mom” for her to use. Thanks again for your hard work, prayers and concern for this group of women who often are neglected. We all felt your love. Blessings to you all.

I can not remember the last time that I felt so special. The dinner that you and your team put together for us was truly amazing with no detail left undone. I felt so blessed to have been a part of the event last night and wanted to say thank you for everything. Please let all of the ladies know just how wonderful they made us feel!!

- Tammy

With the meal I won last week, I invited another single mom (my niece) and her son who do not attend church over to my house and we had dinner. She was very appreciative. I invite her to church often and she has gone with me one time. I’m trying to be her friend and gently lead her to Christ, so this gave me a perfect opportunity to share with her. Thank you so much and thanks to Pizza Hut at Hudson Corners.

- Christine

I can’t thank you enough for the AWESOME hospitality. I felt so loved and cherished there. You truly have the gift of making people feel wanted. Please tell the women who put that together and worked it that it was FANTASTIC! It was well worth the drive through hail, blinding rain, fog and idiot drivers! I couldn’t have had a more enjoyable time. I look forward to learning from you how your ministry came to be and how Kari and I can be successful in our ministry at First Baptist Hendersonville. Thank you again for a wonderful experience.

- Cindi
