The creators of computers
By Ariel Grinshpoon 5D
Alan Turing
• Alan Turing was a British mathematician who was influential in providing a formalisation of the concepts of "algorithm" and "computation" with the Turing machine.
• He made the ACE (Automatic Computing Engine) from 1945 to 1947.
• He also made the LU decomposition - method for solving matrix equations.
Arthur Pollen
• In the early 1900s Pollen recognised the need for a computer-based fire-control system.
• The system took twelve years to develop and included the world's first electrically powered mechanical analogue computer
• Mark III was based on Pollen’s work, which helped the navy.
Bill English
• Computer engineer• Worked at Xerox and Sun Microsystems• Contributed to the development of the
computer pointing device – the mouse.
Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard
• Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard are the electrical engineers that founded the Hewlett-Packard company – aka HP.
• HP provides variety of hardware such as:– Computers– Printers– Scanners– PDA’s
Blaise Pascal
• French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Christian philosopher.
• Did pioneering work on calculating machines – inventor of the mechanical calculator.
• Pascal’s Triangle - convenient tabular presentation for binomial coefficients.
Charles Babbage
• He was an an English polymath • Originated the concept of a programmable
computer – considered a “father of the computer”
• Inventor of the mechanical computer
Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar
• He invented the first commercially successful mechanical calculator - it was called the arithmometer.
• Made one of the most successful French insurance companies.
Christopher Sholes
• Was an American inventor who invented the first practical typewriter and the QWERTY keyboard still in use today.
• He was also a newspaper publisher and Wisconsin politician.
David Boggs
• Electrical and radio engineer from USA• Developed early prototypes of Internet
Protocol (IP), file servers, gateway, network interface cards (NIC)
• Co-inventor of the Ethernet
Frank Edward McGurrin
• Invented Touch Typing – method of typing without looking at the keys.
Frederic C. Williams
• He made a contribution to the Radar development while working at the TRE – Telecommunications Research Establishment
• Pioneered first stored computer – Manchester Mark I
• He is recognised for making the Williams-Kilburn tube, an early memory device.
George Boole
• English mathematician• Worked in fields of differential equations and
algebraic logic• Inventor of the what is now known as Boolean
Logic
George Stibitz
• One of the fathers of the modern digital computers
• Bell Labs researcher• Realized Boolean Logic into digital circuits
Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz
• German mathematician and philosopher• Independently of Newton invented Calculus• Inventor of the mass - produced mechanical
calculator
Harry Huskey
• An American computer designer pioneer• Worked on the Pilot ACE computer with Alan
Turing • Designed and managed the construction of
the Standards Western Automatic Computer (SWAC)
Herman Hollerith
• An American statistician and inventor who developed a mechanical tabulator based on punched cards to rapidly tabulate statistics from millions of pieces of data.
• He was the founder of the Tabulating Machine Company that later merged to become IBM.
• Regarded as the father of modern machine data processing
Howard Aiken
• Was a pioneer in computing, being the original conceptual designer behind IBM's Harvard Mark I and other versions of the computer
• Aiken’s contribution was the introduction of a master's program for computer science at Harvard - starting ground to future computer scientists
J.C.Licklider
• An American psychologist and computer scientist who is considered one of the most important figures in computer science and general computing history.
• An Internet pioneer with an early vision of a worldwide computer network long before it was built
John Mauchly
• An American physicist who, along with J. Presper Eckert, designed ENIAC, the first general purpose electronic digital computer, as well as EDVAC, BINAC and UNIVAC I, the first commercial computer made in the United States.
John Presper Eckert
• An American electrical engineer and computer pioneer• With John Mauchly he invented the first general-
purpose electronic digital computer - ENIAC• Presented the first course in computing topics - The
Moore School Lectures• Founded the first commercial computer company The
Eckert–Mauchly Computer Corporation• Designed the first commercial computer in the U.S.,
the UNIVAC, which incorporated Eckert's invention of the mercury delay line memory.
John Vincent Atanasoff
• An American physicist and inventor, best known for inventing the first electronic digital computer.
• His special-purpose machine has come to be called the Atanasoff–Berry Computer.
Joseph-Marie Jacquard
• A French weaver and merchant.• He played an important role in the
development of the earliest programmable loom - the "Jacquard loom“
• “Jacquard loom” – prdescessor of compute punch cards
Konrad Zuse
• Was a German civil engineer, inventor and computer pioneer.
• His greatest achievement was the world's first programmable computer
• The functional program-controlled Turing-complete Z3 became operational in May 1941.
• He designed the first high-level programming language, Plankalkül.
Robert Metcalfe
• An electrical engineer from the United States who co-invented Ethernet
• Founde 3Com• Formulated Metcalfe's Law – a law for
designing telecommunications networks.
Seymour Cray
• An American electrical engineer and supercomputer architect who designed a series of computers that were the fastest in the world for decades
• Founded Cray Research
Stephen Wozniak
• An American inventor, electronics engineer, and computer programmer
• Co-founded Apple Computer• Designed Apple – I and Apple – II • Founded CL 9 – company that made
programmable universal remote controls• Founder of Wheels of Zeus
Steven Jobs
• Was an American entrepreneur, marketer, and inventor
• Co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc.• Co-founded and served as chief executive of
Pixar Animation Studios• Played a role in introducing the LaserWriter –
first widely available laser printers
Tom Kilburn
• An English engineer. • He and Frederic C. Williams made the
Williams-Kilburn tube.• He made the Manchester Mark I. • He also made the Atlas computer. • Another of his inventions was the MU5 – next
generation Atlas computer.
Tommy Flowers
• A British engineer• Designed Colossus, the world's first
programmable electronic computer, to help solve encrypted German messages.
William Thomson, Lord Kelvin
• A British mathematical physicist and engineer• He did important work in the mathematical
analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics
• He also had a career as an electric telegraph engineer and inventor - for his work on the transatlantic telegraph project he was knighted by Queen Victoria, becoming Sir William Thomson.
