CRANBERRY FEST MAIN EVENTS

With 40,000 people working up an appetite, the food and bak-ery tents are popular venues at Cranberry Fest.

Thousands of pounds of premium-select fresh cranberries willbe sold at several locations during Cranberry Fest.

The 38th annualCranberry Fest, an EagleRiver Area Chamber ofCommerce and VisitorsCenter-sponsored event,will be held Saturday andSunday, Oct. 7-8.

This year’s festivalwill again be located atthe Vilas County Fair-grounds on Highway 70West, with additional ac-tivities downtown on Sat-urday only.

Cranberry Fest hassomething for everyone—an arts and crafts showwith more than 300 dis-plays, cranberry foodsales, a bakery, familyfun, entertainment,sweatshirt and T-shirtsales, the Berry Bog 5KJog and more. With morethan 40,000 people at-tending the festival an-nually, it is one of thehighlights of the fall.

Downtown activitieswill include an open-airantiques market, raffle,food and entertainment.

Welcome to Eagle River’s 38th annual Cranberry Fest!


Wisconsin cranberrygrowers are projecting thestate cranberry harvest todecrease slightly in 2017,but it will remain the coun-try’s top cranberry-produc-ing state for the 23rdconsecutive year at 5.6 mil-lion barrels.

The U.S. Department ofAgriculture (USDA) pre-dicts Wisconsin’s crop maycompare to last year’s har-vest of 6 million barrels. Abarrel is equivalent to 100pounds of berries.

The projected bountifulcrop, part of the more than9 million barrels of cranber-ries expected in 2017 na-tionwide, and the over -supply issue of the fruit isturning around, accordingto Tom Lochner, executivedirector of the WisconsinState Cranberry GrowersAssociation (WSCGA).

“Wisconsin is a leader incranberry growing and weare proud of our hardwork-ing growers and their manycontributions. The Wiscon-sin cranberry industry is amajor economic driver thatsupplies thousands of jobsand brings in a total valueof nearly $1 billion eachyear,” said Lochner. “At thesame time, the oversupplyis a challenge for our grow-ers. With the commodityprice for cranberries wellbelow the cost of produc-tion, many growers in Wis-consin and across thecountry are experiencinglow returns and financialdifficulties.”

Federal agricultural au-thorities also project a 2017cranberry harvest of 2.2million barrels in Mas-sachusetts, 590,000 barrelsin New Jersey, 480,000 bar-rels in Oregon and 180,000in Washington, whichmeans Wisconsin will be thetop cranberry-producingstate for the 23rd consecu-tive year.

Several factors havecaused the market imbal-

ance, including strong grow-ing conditions, new cran-berry acreage, technologicaladvances and a flat demandin certain products, likecranberry juice. Last monthat the U.S. Cranberry Mar-keting Committee’s annualmeeting, the industry unan-imously approved a motionto set volume regulations onthe 2017 and 2018 crops, in-cluding a 15% handler with-holding on the 2017 cropand a 75% producer alloca-tion on the 2018 crop. Thisrecommendation will nextgo to the U.S. Department ofAgriculture for considera-tion.

“This motion is intendedto help stabilize marketingconditions and improvegrower returns,” said Loch-ner. “This short-term solu-tion will help slow theexcess supply being builtwhile the industry contin-ues to focus its efforts onthe long-term solution of in-creasing demand both do-mestically and in inter-national markets.”

The U.S. Cranberry Mar-keting Committee (CMC)has worked diligently to in-crease demand overseas, es-pecially in target countrieslike China, India, Mexico,South Korea and the Euro-pean Union. In collabora-tion with CMC, Wisconsincranberry growers will hosta Reverse Trade Mission forrepresentatives and mediafrom India and China thisfall. Nationally, the CMChas been marketing cran-berries in other countriessince 1999.

“Growing demand inter-nationally is a big opportu-nity, and the industry isworking hard to marketcranberries to new audi-ences,” said Lochner. “At thesame time, domestic con-sumers are still the largestpurchasers of cranberries.We hope that Wisconsiniteswill show their cranberrypride and help move the

needle by finding moreways to incorporate cran-berries into their mealsyear-round.”

Twenty percent of cran-berries are consumed dur-ing the holiday season, andmany consumers don’t real-ize that the nutrition-packed fruit can easily beenjoyed year round. Loch-ner recommends adding asplash of cranberry juice toteas or lemonades, or incor-porating dried cranberriesinto a favorite salad or sidedish. Eagle River’s CranberryFest celebrates the historyand economic significanceof these “rubies of the bog.”Growers in Vilas andOneida counties are part ofa 20-county area of thestate where a rare combina-tion exists of abundant wa-ter, favorable climate, peatsoils and underlying geo-logic conditions that retain

water.

Economic impactThe harvest of cranber-

ries, the state’s No. 1 fruit,has a big economic impactin Wisconsin.

According to reports, theWisconsin cranberry indus-try is a nearly $1 billion in-dustry that provides morethan 4,000 jobs in the state.In 2016, Wisconsin growershad a crop of approximately6 million barrels. Lochnersaid this year’s projectionsare dependent on goodgrowing weather for the re-mainder of the season, in-cluding no damaging hailstorms or major tempera-ture drops leading up to thefall harvest.

Wisconsin will beginharvesting its cranberrycrop in late September andcontinue through much ofOctober.

Approximately 5% of thetotal cranberry crop will besold as fresh fruit and the

remaining cranberries willbe frozen and stored forlonger-term sales as frozenberries, dried cranberries,juices, sauces and more.Cranberries are currentlyused in thousands of prod-ucts around the world,ranging from juices andsweetened dried cranber-ries, to health supplements,body and bath projects, andpet foods.

Many productsLochner said there are

more than 1,000 cranberryproducts on the market to-day, so people can find justabout any type of cranberryfood they’re looking for ongrocery store shelves.

“Cranberries are alsoone of the healthiest fruitson the market today. Re-search has shown that thelittle tart berries can helpkeep your heart healthy,prevent the signs of agingand even help prevent can-cer,” he said.

Some of the most popu-lar food products that aremanufactured and sold inforeign countries include ce-reals, snack bars, trailmixes, sweets, juices, nutri-tional supplements anddried fruit. The cranberry isa fat-free, low-calorie foodthat is high in fiber and an-tioxidants.

Long-time growersBesides the heavy influx

of workers needed for sea-sonal harvest activities inWisconsin, cranberrymarshes provide incomeand investment capital forowners and their families.

They also provide year-round jobs for marsh man-agers, maintenance workersand the hundreds of peoplewho work in the state’s can-ning factories.

who nurture and harvest thetiny red berry have deeproots in the state,” saidLochner. “Most of our morethan 250 growers live andwork on the marsh, andmany are fourth- and fifth-generation growers whosefamilies have grown cran-berries on that same land forgenerations.”

The majority of Wisconsincranberries are grown in theWisconsin Rapids area, butthey are also grown in Man-itowish Waters, Haywardand Eagle River. Five cran-berry marshes surround thetown of Three Lakes inOneida County.

In addition to the bedswhere cranberries aregrown, owners control an-other 160,000 to 170,000acres of land to support thebeds.

Cranberry Fest, a nation-ally publicized celebration ofthe fall harvest season, in-cludes an opportunity forparticipants to tour themarsh at Lake NokomisCranberries.

Planted by handThe planting is done by

spreading cranberry clip-pings over a flat, smooth bed.A bed is approximately 2.5acres.

The vines are thenpushed into the sand/peat,preferably by hand, so partof the plant is in the ground.From that point, the cran-berry will take root and be-gin a new plant.

It takes approximatelyfive years for the cranberryplant’s roots and vines to bestrong enough to holdthrough harvest. The vinecontinues to grow, extendingfrom the top of the plant, andwill continue to produce aslong as it is cared for.

When nighttime bog tem-peratures reach 38 degreesin the fall, an enormoussprinkler system is turnedon to prevent the blossomsor berries from freezing.

“Frost watch” is done assoon as the plants begin togrow (that is, turn greenfrom their winter red color)in the spring until the sprin-klers are turned off just be-fore the crop is harvested inthe fall.

Harvest begins in earlyOctober and continues into

late October or early Novem-ber.

To harvest the cranber-ries, the bed must be flooded.Using ditches, they are ableto use gravity to fill the bedswith water.

The cranberry has fourair pockets in it whichmakes it float, forcing thevine to stand straight upwhen the bed is flooded.When the water is highenough, the harvest machinegoes in. It is relatively small,so it does not hurt the vines.This knocks the ripe berriesoff the vine.

The water is then raisedeven higher so that all thevines are under water andthe berries float atop. Boardsare connected across thelength of the bed to corralthe berries.

At the end of the bed,workers push the berriesinto the conveyor that takesthe berries out of the bedand dumps them into wag-ons to be taken to the clean-ing station. They are carriedover a series of belts to becleaned of debris and placedinto a semitrailer.

Wetland stewardsWhile the cranberry mar-

ket has grown and changedover the years, Lochner saidthe growers’ strong convic-tion as “stewards of the wet-lands” remains the same.

“Because they work inthe marshes daily and usu-ally live next to these wet-lands, growers takeenvironmental protectionvery seriously,” he said.

The diversity of wildlifein and around a cranberryfarm is a good indicationthat agricultural practicescan nurture a sound envi-ronment. Pest control is anarea in which growers havemade great strides.

Cranberries attract anumber of pests, primarilyweeds and insects, which re-duce yields and fruit quality.Industry officials said theyhave invested in advancedand safe pest and diseasemanagement.

In particular, it’s time tothink cranberries in sauceswirled through heavy,delectable cheesecake thattops a buttery graham-cracker crust.

Makes your mouth water,right? Notonly is thatcombina-tion a de-light fort a s t ebuds, it’salso an amaz-ing sight foreyes.

The world’slargest cran-berry cheesecake, a scrump-tious concoction of creamcheese and cranberries, willwiden eyes. It’s more than100 feet long!

Appearing for the 26thtime at Cranberry Fest, thecheesecake is a fundraiserfor Make-A-Wish Founda-tion, which receives all theproceeds generated by thesale of cheesecake slices.

This national organiza-tion, which depends solelyon volunteer help and dona-tions, grants thousands ofwishes nationwide to chil-dren ages 2 to 18 sufferinglife-threatening illnesses.

In the past 25 years, ithas helped fund wishes for54 North Woods childrenwhose health needs areunique.

While most wishes are fortrips to Disney World, otherwishes have included visitswith sports heroes andmovie stars, gifts of comput-ers and entertainment cen-ters, shopping sprees,attendance at professionalsporting events, a puppy anda horse. A recent wish for aNorth Woods youngster wasfor a trip to the Daytona 500.

A mixture of hundreds ofpounds of cream cheese andsugar, dozens of eggs andthousands of cranberries,the cheesecake is the brain-

child of former CranberryFest organizer Cindy Mein-holz and Make-A-Wish rep-resentatives from the NorthWoods, the late RandyBergstrom and his wife,Michele.

Bergstrom died unexpect-edly March 3, 2010, yetMichele and the wonderfulcrew that has been part ofthe fundraiser for manyyears vowed to carry on thetradition in Randy’s mem-

ory.“Randy wouldwant us to, and

not only that,would insist on

us havinga greatt i m esellingt h o s e

slices,” saidMichele. “He loved Cran-berry Fest and what thecheesecake represented. Itbrought magic to medicallychallenged children. As wishgranters, we loved thesmiles those wishesbrought.”

In November of 2010, atthe annual board meeting,officials from Make-A-WishFoundation of Wisconsinhonored Randy and Mi chelewith the Todd Lappin Lead-ership Award, the first-everrecipients of such a highhonor.

“All Randy and I everwanted when we grantedwishes was to do good anddisappear. I was far beyondgrateful to accept that awardin Randy’s name,” notedMichele.

All of the cheesecake’s in-gredients are donated bymajor food purveyors aroundthe state, while the baking ofthe huge dessert will be do-nated by Trig’s of EagleRiver, Rhinelander, Minoc-qua and Wausau.

Actually 140 feet long be-cause of extra baking pans,the cheesecake will be dis-played in a tent set up toshow off its tremendous size.It is one of the most sought-after attractions at Cran-berry Fest. At $3 a slice, it’s agreat bargain, too!

It’s fall, the leaves are turning andit’s time for the Cranberry Fest lun-cheon at the First CongregationalUnited Church of Christ in EagleRiver on Saturday, Oct. 7.

The church is located on the cornerof First and Division streets, also astop for the Cranberry Fest Shuttlefrom and to the fairgrounds.

The luncheon has been a specialtreat during Cranberry Fest for morethan 19 years and is a “must include”as part of the fall season.

The aromas in the air and friendlyfaces add to the fun of CranberryFest. A delicious hot turkey casseroleis the main dish, accompanied bycranberry salad, relishes, cranberrymuffins, assorted desserts and bever-ages, all served by red-aproned wait-staff.

The luncheon will be served from11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $10 foradults and $3 for children.

Also, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., theLake Country Weavers and FiberArts Guild members will exhibit theirmany fine works of art, hold demon-strations and a wide variety of itemswill be available for purchase, at thesame location.

The luncheon is a place to see oldfriends and meet new ones. Many

come year after year for the luncheon.Even though this event is sponsoredby the Women’s Fellowship, manymen and women of the church helpmake this all happen.

A cookbook, entitled, “Faith, Food& Fellowship,” second edition, is onsale for $6, which includes the turkeycasserole recipe, along with many,many favorites from church mem-bers.

Proceeds from the luncheon areused to help various groups in thecommunity and mission projects.Handmade mittens, scarves and hatsare given to Head Start, toiletries aredonated to Tri-County Council on Do-mestic Violence Lilly’s House inRhinelander, scholarships are pro-vided for youth to attend Moon BeachCamp, and gift cards are sent to col-lege students.

Other mission projects include do-nations to Fredrick Place (NorthernAlliance for Temporary Housing) inRhinelander and Relay For Life. Anongoing project for the women is mak-ing lap robes for the Iron Mountain,Mich., V.A. Hospital, care centers andfriends who are ill or shut-in.

Walter E. Olson Memo-rial Library Friends willhold a used-book saleThursday through Satur-day, Oct 5-7, as part of theCranberry Fest celebration.

Used books, includingchildren’s books, puzzlesand games will be amongthe items for sale. Proceeds

from the sale will benefitchildren’s and adult pro-grams held throughout theyear.

A new video portrayingthe growing and harvestingof cranberries will be avail-able for viewing Saturday,Oct. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hot cider, coffee and cran-berry treats will be servedat the library during Cran-berry Fest.

The sale will be heldduring regular hours in thelibrary conference room.The library is located at 150E. Hospital Road in EagleRiver.

Fest spectators canlook for fresh cranberrysales located throughoutthe community at four lo-cations — the CranberryFest grounds at VilasCounty Fairgrounds, thecorner of Highway 70East and Railroad Streetat Holiday Stationstore,Eagle River Area Cham-ber of Commerce and Vis-itors Center at 201 N.Railroad St., and down-town Eagle River at thecorner of Main and Wallstreets.

Only the best berrieswill be sold, according tochamber Executive Direc-tor Kim Emerson.

“The berries are high-quality, premium select,because they follow theU.S. Department of Agri-culture processing stan-dards for fresh cran-berries,” she said. “Thefresh fruit is hand-sorted,clean, mature, firm andfree from moisture, bruis-ing and decay.”

Each berry is approxi-mately one-half inch insize and displays a fairlyuniform red to deep pur-ple color, according toEmerson.

“Don’t forget to takehome fresh cranberries

and if you haven’t tried aCraisin, be sure to getsome, too. Recipes for

both are available at thevarious cranberry salesites,” she said.

Cranberry Fest in EagleRiver has been celebratedthe first weekend of Octoberfor more than 35 years.

Everyone is welcome tojoin in on this tradition byparticipating in the Cran-berry Bog 5K Jog.

This was formerly aCranberry Fest FitnessEvent and is a family-friendly 5-kilometer runand walk — great for kidsand strollers!

The Berry Bog 5K Jogwill be Saturday, Oct. 7. Thestart/finish line and regis-tration for the family-friendly 5K fun run will beat Riverview Park acrossthe street from the EagleRiver Area Chamber ofCommerce and VisitorsCenter in Eagle River.

The Berry Bog Jog is or-ganized by Christ Evangeli-cal Lutheran Church andChrist Lutheran School andis sponsored by Eagle RiverCabinets Inc., Eagle RiverService Center, Excel Clean-ing and Restoration, Ho-rant’s Garden Center andRockworks by LorbetskeLandscaping.

The fun run will begin at8:30 a.m., with registrationfrom 7 to 8:15 a.m. The runis a flat and fast 5-kilometercourse on paved roads, witha water station at the finish.

This is a family-friendlyfun run open to all competi-tive and noncompetitiverunners and walkers. Allare encouraged to partici-pate by running or walkingindividually or by forming

teams of employees, familymembers, friends and oth-ers.

Each participant will re-ceive a Berry Bog 5K Joglong-sleeved T-shirt. Regis-tration is $40 the day of theevent. One of the best-kept se-crets at Cranberry Fest isthe live auction for qualitymerchandise.

Held Sunday, Oct. 8, at11:30 a.m., in the Make-A-Wish Foundation cheese-cake tent on the fairgrounds,many festivalgoers havefound this to be a good placeto find that unique gift forChristmas giving or otherspecial events.

The items for auctionhave been donated by vari-ous vendors, fest exhibitors

and area businesses.The best part is that no

one loses. If you do not getthe top bid, you can visit thebooth of the crafter who do-nated the item and buy onejust like it.

As the competition be-tween the bidders developsinto a special camaraderie,this is one of the more enjoy-able events to attend.

Money raised at the auc-tion will go toward twoscholarships for high schoolstudents.

The main food tent atCranberry Fest is managedby two nonprofit servicegroups — Eagle River Ro-tary Club and the GreaterEagle River Tennis Associa-tion

In addition to soup, sand-wiches, and hot and colddrinks for lunch, a pancakebreakfast will be served Sat-urday and Sunday morn-ings, Oct. 7-8.

The pancake breakfasthas been popular for ven-dors staying on the groundsas well as early morning fes-tivalgoers.

Hungry customers willenjoy their choice of regularor cranberry pancakes, porksausage and a drink for acost of $7. Breakfast will beserved from 7 to 10 a.m.,both mornings. Lunch willbe served after 10 a.m.

Bus shuttle service willbe available to transfer peo-ple to all the activities dur-ing Cranberry Fest.

The shuttle will run from9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday.

Buses will run approxi-mately every half-hour Sat-urday, and will stop at EagleRiver Area Chamber ofCommerce and Visitors Cen-ter for cranberry marshtours.

There will be two busstops downtown Saturday,for the antiques show andfarmers market. They will beat Butch’s Pizza North at thecorner of First and Wallstreets, and Eagle RiverFirst Congregational United

The festivities will in-clude a farmers market, anantiques show and a foodstand — all within just afew feet of dozens of uniqueshops in downtown EagleRiver. Featured food will in-clude many delicious cran-berry-flavored products.

For the convenience offestivalgoers, the first threeblocks of Wall Street will beclosed to traffic. In addi-tion, a bus shuttle will pro-vide transportationbetween the fairgroundsand downtown.

“People visiting the areaare encouraged to extendtheir stay at CranberryFest in downtown EagleRiver,” said Kim Emerson,executive director of theEagle River Area Chamberof Commerce and VisitorsCenter.

Fresh produce and fresh cranberries will be available atthe farmers market in downtown Eagle River Saturday,Oct. 7.


Are you traveling toCranberry Fest from thewest using Highway 70?If so, you may run into de-lays due to traffic.

To avoid a possible de-lay and get to CranberryFest in a timely manner,chamber officials suggestthat you take the alter-nate route that has beenset up.

Just watch for signsand the Cranberry Festlogo to direct you aroundthe delay.

Approaching EagleRiver from the west onHighway 70, take SunsetRoad to the left and fol-low to Highway G. Turnright onto Highway Gand follow to Highway 45.

Turn right onto Highway45 and follow into EagleRiver.

Once you have arrivedin Eagle River, feel free tofind parking in the down-town area and then walkor take the free shuttlebus Saturday to the fair-grounds.

Shuttle buses will runapproximately every 30minutes from 9 a.m. to 5p.m. Saturday. The buseswill stop at the followinglocations: Butch’s PizzaNorth at the corner ofFirst and Wall streets,First CongregationalUnited Church of Christ,Eagle River Area Cham-ber of Commerce & Visi-tors Center, and the eastgate of the Vilas County

taking the shuttle buswill not only help create asafer Cranberry Fest, butit will help you to get toand from the CranberryFest grounds morequickly,” said chamberExecutive Director KimEmerson. “We thank you.”

Emerson said parkingin the downtown area re-duces traffic congestionnear the Vilas CountyFairgrounds. Downtownactivities will include anopen-air antiques showand farmers market.

Many downtown busi-nesses will have Cran-berry Fest specials intheir stores and restau-rants.

The Eagle River area isknown for its Chain of Lakesand its chain of eventsthroughout the year andCranberry Fest is one of thebiggest links in that chain,thanks to hundreds of volun-teers who help make it allpossible.

Volunteers are the key toevery community event inthe area and Cranberry Festis no different.

According to NatalieSpiess, Eagle River AreaChamber of Commerce andVisitors Center events coor-dinator, Cranberry Fest hasan incredible number of en-thusiastic volunteers whogive graciously of their timeand talents. Spiess said thatwithout all of these people,Cranberry Fest would not bepossible.

While planning for thisyear’s event, Spiess notedthat Cranberry Fest utilizedmore than 400 volunteers,giving more than 2,000hours during the festivalalone. She also estimatedthat another 30 volunteers

were busy helping with theBerry Bog 5K Jog.

“People are really sur-prised when you start talk-ing about how manyvolunteers it takes to carryout Cranberry Fest,” saidSpiess. She said many vol-unteers come back year afteryear.

“We are fortunate manyof the volunteers return yearafter year, working in thesame areas, while somechoose to try something new.Plus, these people, alongwith friends and family, arealways willing to help out ina pinch,” she said.

Spiess said a frequentcomment heard from all thenew volunteers is, “I neverknew how much fun it couldbe to help. I’ll be back nextyear.”

Comments heard aboutthe volunteers from visitorsare equally positive. “Cran-berry Fest has happy volun-teers. Everyone is so helpful,that’s why we like to come toEagle River,” said severalfestival veterans.

Another favorite com-ment from out-of-town visi-tors is, “How can Eagle Riverorganize so many greatevents? How do you get allthose volunteers? We couldnever do that. Do you knowhow lucky you are?”

Spiess responds with,“We are very fortunate tohave these people and wegreatly appreciate all thatthey continue to do for theevents of Eagle River, espe-cially Cranberry Fest.”

Cranberry Fest is an all-volunteer, communitywideevent. Volunteers range inage from 9 to 90, and comefrom all over the area tohelp. No experience is neces-sary and training is pro-vided as needed. Volunteersare treated to coffee andlunch in a heated tent desig-nated just for them.

A variety of fiber artistswill be at the one-day LakeCountry Weavers and FiberArts Guild Exhibit and Saleduring Cranberry Fest.

Hosted by guild mem-bers, the exhibit will beopen from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 7, at FirstCongregational UnitedChurch of Christ in EagleRiver. Admission is free.

If you have ever won-dered how the wool from afluffy sheep in the meadowturns into a beautiful warmscarf, sock or sweater, this isthe place to see it done. Youwill see wool being spuninto yarn. You might evensee beads added during theplying step.

A particularly fascinat-ing demonstration will bedone on a Navajo loom. Vis-itors can watch this ancientart and see the work appearbefore your eyes.

One member will beworking on her shiboriscarf-weaving project. She’ll

show visitors all the stepsinvolved, including the pre-and post-dyeing.

Another member will bedemonstrating rug hooking,another fiber art with woolstrips of fabric hooked in acloth foundation. You willsee a colorful array of rugsand wall hangings done thisway.

And a fiber show wouldnot be complete without aknitting demonstration. Anumber of the club mem-bers are very accomplishedknitters. If you have a ques-tion, they will be happy tooffer assistance.

There will be a wide va-riety of items for sale thatreflect the use of many dif-ferent fiber-related skills.Original rugs, runners, mit-tens, scarves, table runners,felt bags, felt clogs, felt winecozies and hand-spun yarnswill be available for pur-chase.

In addition to the fiberexhibit, demos and sale, the

Women’s Fellowship at thechurch will offer a luncheonfrom 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tick-ets for the luncheon can bepurchased at the door.

The Lake CountryWeavers and Fiber ArtsGuild helps supportweavers, knitters, cro-cheters, rug hookers, spin-ners and other interestedartists in the North Woods.

To further educate andfor camaraderie among themembers, monthly meet-ings are held. A wide geo-graphic area is covered,from Land O’ Lakes toRhinelander, Presque Isleto Three Lakes.

It was a happy day inthe beginning. We weredriving east to an off-gridconcert through beautifulWisconsin farmland.

This concert was for agroup of people who wehave come to love dearly.

We would be joined bythe Rev. Bill Lincoln for aministry we do combiningthe word of God followedby a concert. Pastor Billblends his five-string bassguitar, and deep bass vo-cals to our sound.

Enjoying our journey,Bonnie and I chattedabout the scenery, the pro-gram we were going to do,never once turning on theradio. When we got to thecampus parking lot andturned to park, we sawthe ugly storm approach-ing that must have beenfollowing us.

“Let’s get the equip-ment out before this hits!”we declared.

The first cart was noproblem, rolling down theramp effortlessly. The sec-ond cart started down theramp when all of a suddenits front axle snapped andit ended up as a pile ofrubble at the bottom ofthe ramp. That’s when thewind and the rain hit usfull force.

Pastor Bill arrived andimmediately ran over tohelp, and the three of usdragged the damaged cartnear the main entranceand set the front of thecart on a large rock closeto the door. We were thenable to unload the equip-ment. Once we got it allinside, we took a momentto ponder the situation.

I was looking at thefirst cart, when on its ownit rolled just short of theglass doors. The front ofthe cart was facing thebroken-down cart outside.It was as if this was their

last look at each other af-ter serving more than 20years together haulingequipment.

A wave of sadnesscame over me. I closed myeyes, “I must dream ofsomething pleasant,” Ithought. A few momentslater I heard Bonnie ask,“Why are you smiling?What are you thinkingabout?”

“Cranberry fritters,” Ianswered.

In just a couple ofmonths (Oct. 7 and 8)we’ll be in Eagle River

playing music in the bak-ery tent at the CranberryFestival. There’ll be every-thing you can imaginegood to eat made out ofcranberries.

We’ll play our songs forold friends and new onestoo. It will be a time totake a break, enjoy goodfood, let those feet restwhile listening to familiartunes.

As for me, remember,eating a cranberry fritteris not just a good experi-ence, it can be an upliftingmemory!

Parking assistance atthis year’s Cranberry Festwill be provided by EagleRiver Lions Club.

The fee will be $5 per car

to park in the designatedareas at the fairgrounds.

The proceeds from theparking fee will go to EagleRiver Lions Club, and Ea-gle River Area Chamber ofCommerce and VisitorsCenter to support area pro-jects.

Eagle River CranberryFest continues to be a spe-cial event for North Woodsresidents and visitors withmany activities for all, in-cluding the opportunity tovisit and tour a workingcranberry marsh.

Tours of area marsheshave been taking place formore than three decades, re-sulting in visitors gaininginsight and knowledgeabout the importance ofcranberries to Wisconsin.

Visitors to the fest cantake a guided tour of one ofthe largest cranberrymarshes in the area — LakeNokomis Cranberries — lo-cated right here in EagleRiver.

They will visit a marshthat has called Eagle Riverhome for more than 75years, learn the history ofthe cranberry marsh andhow it has been developedinto a 334-acre marshthroughout the years, seethe layout of the cranberrymarsh close-up with ascenic drive on the marsh,and learn about harvestequipment.

Knowledgeable tourguides will explain the hardwork that needs to be doneat the marsh spring, sum-mer, fall and winter. Visitorswill learn why Wisconsin isNo. 1 in cranberry produc-tion, plus they’ll find out all

of the health benefits re-ceived from eating cranber-ries.

After the scenic tour ofthe marsh itself, the secondstop of the tour will be atthe Lake Nokomis Cranber-ries tasting area where theywill be able to sample LakeNokomis cranberry wineand other local wines.

There also will be sam-ples of cranberry barbecuesauce, chocolate-covered

cranberries and yogurt-cov-ered cranberries.

The last stop of the tourwill be at the Lake NokomisCranberries Wine & GiftShop, where visitors willfind many cranberry-re-lated items, including cran-berry wines, lotions, soaps,candles, sauces, jams andthose delicious sweeteneddried cranberries. Alsoavailable will be farm-freshcranberries straight from

the marsh.To become a part of the

two-hour cranberry marshtour and wine tasting, peo-ple should make their reser-vations early. Tours are verypopular and book upquickly.
