S eems like there is always something interesting to do or see in downtown Newnan. The recent display of “Painted Horses”

on and around the court square has served to brighten the atmo-sphere, giving a more modern look to the old place. With most of the old trees now removed, the horses seem to add a little flair to the now open areas around the court house. Perhaps this will be the start of future displays of art which will add interest to this already popular gathering place.

Although I really enjoy looking, I’m sorry to say I’m not much of a man for horses. I have many friends who dearly love them, includ-ing a granddaughter who has ridden in competition, but I don’t seem to have that “way” with animals the way a real horse lover

does. I just can’t get on the same page as horses; they know it, and I believe they are silently laughing at me when I try. I couldn’t even get along with Nadine’s cat, which was with us for 17 years – may she rest in peace. (The cat, not my wife!) But I do admire those who enjoy horses and are fulfilled taking care of, and loving them.

I can remember riding a horse a least three times in my life: the “first”, the “only” and the “last” time. I was in my mid twenties and visiting a friend on Bruce Jackson Road when I accepted his offer to ride. Having watched a lot of cowboy movies, I thought I knew exactly what to do, since John Wayne made it look so easy. They say a horse knows when you are uncomfortable around it, and this one had me “sized up” at first glance. When I “climbed aboard”, it was obvious this ani-mal had his (or her- I don’t know) own agenda which would be made evident to me over the next few minutes. He took off even before I could say “go”, then ran through my neighbor’s garden, trampling much of the crop, before exiting the property. As we (I and my “friend” the horse) were galloping down the middle of the road at about 50 miles per hour, I could not seem to think of a single action those TV cowboys did to control their horses. I pulled on every rope, string, tail and mane I could grab, “hollered out” all those clas-sic phrases I had heard from cowboys be-ing chased by Indians, while desperately trying to “honk” the horn of the saddle to no avail! The horse was not impressed. My friends were right behind us in a truck as we (I and the horse) arrived at a farm about three miles away. “Oh, I forgot to tell you”, said my friend laughing. “This horse has a bad habit of running back to the barn with an inexperienced rider!” “And it’s not even my horse”!

Just give me an old fashion combustion engine with at least two wheels attached, and a horn that really “honks” when pushed. Then I can probably get from here to there, without any “attitude” from the vehicle. It will stop at my command, and won’t run away with me until I say ”Go”! But don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy looking at horses. Just make sure they are finished in a glossy color and their feet firmly attached to a stand.

JoePostscript: Although my wife and I live on almost two hundred acres, I am not a farmer, and the only animals on our property are “trespassing”. So, if you see me wearing a big cowboy hat, you can rightly say that I am “All Hat And No Cows”!

“When I “climbed aboard”,

it was obvious this animal had

his (or her - I don’t know) own

agenda which would be made

evident to me over the next few

minutes.”

New Chief Clinical Officer Joins Piedmont Newnan Hospital

Newnan, Ga. (May 2012) – Physicians and staff at Piedmont Newnan Hospital are pleased to welcome Sheri DeShazo, RN, as the new vice president and chief clinical officer.

As chief clinical officer, DeShazo has responsibility for the following hospital ser-vices: interventional, women’s, inpatient, emergency, imaging, laboratory, rehabili-tation, pharmacy and pulmonary services. She also will oversee the Care Coordina-tion Center.

DeShazo, who brings over 25 years of nursing experience and clinical leader-ship to her new role, comes to Piedmont Newnan Hospital from Carolinas Health-care System, where she most recently served as the chief operating officer and chief nursing executive at Kings Mountain Hospital in Kings Mountain, N.C.

“Sheri is a proven leader and we couldn’t be happier to welcome her to the Pied-mont Newnan team,” said Michael Bass, CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “Her strong background in quality and operational improvement make her a great match for our culture of service excellence.”

Prior to Kings Mountain Hospital, DeShazo was an executive at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, an 872-bed hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

DeShazo received the Cleveland County Business Development Center Humani-tarian Award in 2010 and was later inducted to Who’s Who in Charlotte in 2011. She is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds a bach-elor’s degree in Nursing from Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C. DeShazo also earned a master’s degree in Business Administration and a mas-ter’s degree in Health Administration from Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, N.C.

DeShazo began her role as the new vice president and chief clinical officer at Pied-mont Newnan Hospital on April 16. For more information on Piedmont Newnan Hospital, visit piedmontnewnan.org.

All you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and their families as you pro-vide companionship and a brief respite for caregiv-ers. You will not need to provide any medical or physical care to the pa-tient, just a caring heart and a listening ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours each week to allow the care-giver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and support-ed. Decor Shopping at HomeShopping from the comfort of your home, at your

computer, perhaps in your pj’s while having your morn-ing coffee has become ...well, common place. When I talk about shopping at home, I’m not talking about online shopping. I’m talking about physically getting up, walking around your own home, poking around in your attics, basements, storage areas and shopping through your tired old discarded furniture and accessories. Dragging them out, looking at them with a fresh eye and breathing new life into them in a fun new way.

Say you have inherited your grandmothers velvet covered wingback chairs, they have sentimental value, but you’re not sure how to incorporated them into your home with your “not so wingback like” furniture. Think about painting the legs, and covering the chair in a current fun fabric like geometrics or ikat and you now have yourself a one of a kind updated chair, that still has sentimental value, but looks like you.

Perhaps you’ve just combined households and the furniture is miss matched in a bad way and you want to make it look more cohesive without spending a fortune buying new furniture. I say, bring out the paint, baby. A great way to make miss matched furnishings “match” is with black paint. Then add some new hard-ware, and you’ve got yourself a Pottery Barn look without the price tag. WARN-ING: the man of the household usually has a problem with this process because they think that you shouldn’t cover up wood … I say, just because it’s wood, doesn’t mean it’s good. What have you got to lose? Once you explain to him that it’s either this, or buy new expensive furniture, I think he’ll see your side of things. Either way, you were going to get rid of that look, right?

While you were poking around in your attic, you found some lamps that you forgot about and you really could use some extra light in your family room. Again, bring out the spray paint in a fun bright color and spray away (be sure to check the wir-ing). Then cover the lamp shade in a fun patterned fabric or wall paper that coordinates with the fabric that you used on your grandmother’s wingback chairs and you are well on your way to a re-decorated room and all you had to do was shop at home.

Now, go shop till you drop!

“I’d like to be the ideal mother, but I’m too busy raising my kids.”

~ Unknown

“The mother of three notoriously unruly youngsters was asked whether or not

she’d have children if she had it to do over again. “Yes,” she replied. “But not the same ones.”

~ David Finkelstein

“A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday school presentation.

His mother was in the front row to prompt him. She gestured and formed the words silently with her lips, but it did not help. Her son’s memory was blank. Finally,

she leaned forward and whispered the cue, “I am the light of the world.”

The child beamed and with great feeling and a loud clear voice said,

“My mother is the light of the world.” ~ Bits and Pieces, 1989

A teacher gave her class of second graders a lesson on the magnet and what it does.

The next day in a written test, she included this question: “My full name has six letters.

The first one is M. I pick up things. What am I?” When the test papers

were turned in, the teacher was astonished to find that almost 50 percent

of the students answered the question with the word Mother

Homeelectrical safety tips

Commonly Asked Questions

Why are my light bulbs always blowing?

• You may have the wrong type of bulbs.• Voltage to the bulbs may be higher than the bulbs are rated.

• There may be a grounding issue with your home.

Why are my GFCI outlets always tripping?(The ones with the buttons)

• Age. If they are more than seven years old, change them.• Poor quality, low cost GFCI’s don’t last as long.• Improper installation. This is very common when not installed

by a licensed electrician.

Why are some of my outlets not working?

• The breaker may have tripped. If it did, there is a reason and should be checked.• Age. In older homes they can just wear out.• Improper installation. Outlets are easy to install but we see them done wrong on a daily basis. Only a licensed electrician

should be doing work on your home.

Why are my breakers always tripping?

• Using more power than the breaker is designed for. • Breakers wear with age.• Improper electrical work. It is really easy to wire something

wrong. Always hire a licensed electrician

Can electrical problems cause my Heat/AC unit to malfunction?

• Yes. Wrong size wiring, wrong type and size of breaker and even grounding issues can cause many different malfunctions. A simple check up could save you money and frustration in the

future.

How often should my electrical system be checked out?

• Every seven to ten years. An electrical system is mechanical and has wear and tear. Also, for safety reasons, certain parts are designed to fail. Breakers, GFCI receptacles and smoke detectors are not doing their job if they don’t trip, or “fail”. The more they trip, the more the wear out. If your home is more than 30 years old, have it checked regularly. With proper care, it can last for a long time.

Grillin’ and Chillin’with Joe Powell

Through GRILLDOME OF NEWNAN, Joe can provide families with a high quality, ceramic grill/smoker which can be enjoyed for a lifetime. (Depending on your age, gentle reader) It uses real charcoal, but because of the grill’s adjustable venting system, the coals will last much longer – just add a bit when needed. “You can put in a piece of meat, smoke it unattended over night, and it will literally be ready to fall off the bone the next morning”, says Joe. He also sells the Atlanta Burning Sauce, which makes barbeque even better!

Joe is the co-owner of the Commercial House offices, a licensed real estate agent, and has a hobby-business restoring and selling classic cars, including my “new to me” 41 year old Mercedes Benz. Joe is a “One Off, Custom Made, Special Edition model”, and I consider myself fortunate that he has counted me as a friend for many years.

“Drunken Chicken”

One small, whole chicken

Add lemon pepper

After drinking the first two thirds of a beer, place the can, containing the remaining one third, into the chick-ens “cavity” and prop it on the grill using the bird’s wings for support.

Set the ventilation of your grill at about one half open – top and bottom with lid closed.

Return to your “inebriated fowl” in about two and one quarter hours.

Moisture from the beer will be drawn Into the chicken for a tasty feast.

If you enjoy outdoor cooking but don’t have that “just right” setup you need, you may want to get to know Newnan’s Joe Powell. For years, Joe has provided his friends and customers (who immediately become his friends) with the fellowship of great food and bever-age, along with interesting conversation just because he likes people. I had the opportunity, just last week, to assist Joe and some friends in putting down some great grilled bratwurst, smothered with grilled peppers and onions. As usual, I loved it!

Local Family Donates $2 Million To Help Fund New Neurosciences and Learning Institute at

Piedmont Newnan Hospital

Newnan, Ga. – Whitesburg residents Reese and Mimsie Lanier donated $2 mil-lion to Piedmont Newnan Hospital for the development of a comprehensive Neuro-sciences and Learning Institute at 745 Poplar Rd., Newnan, Ga.

The neuroscience program will focus on the diagnosis, management and edu-cation for patients of diseases that affect either the central or peripheral nervous system such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and more. Patients of the Neurosciences and Learning Institute will be treated by neurologic specialists and surgeons, experience the latest in technology and have the convenience of ad-ditional on-site patient education and support.

“It is evident Mr. and Mrs. Lanier care very deeply about the people in the sur-rounding communities and their access to specialized healthcare,” said Michael Bass, CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “With their contribution, we will be able to jumpstart this program that will benefit people for years to come. We are in-credibly grateful for their generosity and continued support of our hospital.”

Set to be built adjacent to the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital, the Neurosciences and Learning Institute will have outpatient clinical areas such as physician offices, examination rooms, and EEG and EMG diag-nostic suites. Other features of the new building, which also will be used for ongoing education and training of medical staff, employees and patients, include: pa-tient education rooms; conference rooms; a computer training laboratory; simulation training rooms; multi-purpose classrooms; and an amphitheater-style lecture hall.

“Mimsie and I wanted to make a gift to Piedmont Newnan Hospital for several reasons,” said Reese La-nier, who is a former patient. “I wanted to honor the relationship I have with my long-time friend, physi-cian and Piedmont Newnan Hospital board member Dr. Truett Jarrard. In addition, I have received excel-lent care from cardiologist Dr. Charles Wickliffe and many other Piedmont physicians throughout my life-time, and I value the expertise Piedmont will bring to our community.”

Truett Jarrard, M.D. practiced at PAPP Clinic and Newnan Hospital from 1972 to 2000 and has served on the Piedmont Newnan Hospital board of directors since 2007. Charles Wickliffe, M.D. is an intervention-al cardiologist who treats Lanier at Piedmont Hospital and is former chairman of the Piedmont Healthcare Board of Directors.

As a not-for-profit health system, Piedmont Health-care and its affiliated organizations rely on the gen-erosity of donors like Mr. and Mrs. Lanier in order to offer many programs to the community. The Lanier family’s donation will be used to fund the initial phases of construction and equipment at the Neurosciences and Learning Institute. It is part of an $8 million fund-raising campaign called “Building on our Promise” for Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

For more information about the new neurosciences program or to support “Building on our Promise,” con-tact Kelly Loftin, director of philanthropy at Piedmont Newnan Hospital at 770-304-4147.

Green and

WhiteGreen is Nature’s color. It is

restful and cool. White is pure and clean and cool like snow. Green and white together of-fer a refreshing, peaceful pic-ture. The simplicity of green and white is excellent in a small garden. It’s quiet sophistication lends itself to the formal garden. In our hot and humid summer it is refreshing. White lights up shade gardens and dark spaces. Green blends colors. Proportion properly applied can help to blend various shades of white plants. Spacing greens and grey or silver plants also helps blend whites. Use Artemisia, Dusty Miller, and Lamb’s Ears.

Design principles of balance, dominance, contrast, rhythm, proportion and scale will need to be carefully considered. Include a variety of textures of foliages and a variety of heights. Remember axis and focal point. Accents relieve monotony! Strive for simplicity and unity. Containers can be used as focal points or accents. Include vertical interest with trees, shrubs, vines, arbors, or wall planters. Walls, fences, or hedges make a

very effective background for plants.

Today, more than ever, there is a wide selection of plants with white blooms. There are also many var-iegated foliages available. New selections are being introduced every year. Shop around. Order catalogs.
