It gives me pleasure to share some of my thoughts in the Shopper, however, since I’m not a trained writer, I
sometimes receive “words of correction” from our read-ers. “You need a proof reader”, some will say, or “you must have made up that word, or that phrase”. Well, the fact is I heard a lot of those words and phrases growing up without the proper understanding of their meaning, and I still use them today. I think most of us still use some of those “hold over” phrases from our childhood which we can’t seem to shake off.
My dad used to think it was funny to use unknown (to us children) words and phrases which would confuse us. “I’m about to “perish to death”, he would say. I thought we would soon be making his funeral arrangements, but not until he had been “mortified” by the mortician (undertaker). He once said to my little sister, Weslyn, “I heard that you procrastinated on the front steps.” “It wasn’t me”, she replied. “It must have been the dog!” I grew up thinking euthaniza-tion would make you look young again, and that tartar sauce was a bi-product of the dental industry.
And we all grew up being told not to “poke our eye out” with anything we were playing with, even a basketball. But the really big one, for me, was being told not to wear “holey” underwear when driving a car. You might just have a wreck and would be embarrassed in the emergency room. And if you died, you really would be “mortified”!
Now days, I have a word processor which tries to tell me how to spell and what punctuation to use, but I won’t allow it much leeway. If I have a choice of being “cor-rect” or interesting, I’ll at least try to be interesting.
So, in my final example, I would like to pose this important question. Now that Pope Benedict XVI has retired, must he continue to wear “Holey” underwear?
Joe
Post Script: I was married with two children before I found out that (the) Maine lobster was not the “big guy in the tank”!
“So, in my final example, I would like to pose this impor-tant question. Now that Pope Benedict XVI has retired, must he continue to wear “Holey” un-derwear?”

The past two articles have discussed fl ower arranging in the home or a Stan-dard Flower Show in a home. Standard Flower Show in a location other than a home will likely have classes calling for advanced design styles and highly inter-pretive themes not seen in a home. Other types of fl oral work have their own set of special requirements. Oriental arrangement styles have very exact methods all their own which differ greatly from other design types. Flowers for churches must meet the needs and restrictions of each church. Generally, the fl owers are viewed from a seated position and from a distance. Weddings and other special events are also very different. The designs are usually much larger and taller. Staging these designs requires special mechanics, props, ladders, etc. The fl ow-ers may need to hold up well out of water for hours. Then, funeral arrangements have yet another set of requirements.
After a design has been planned and constructed, how can it be analyzed? Try asking these questions:
Does the design appear balanced - top to bottom, left to right, and front to back (real and visual)?
Is the container too large or too small for the amount or visual ‘weight’ of the plant mate-rials?
Are all the components clean, and in good condition? (nothing wilted, or past prime, or damaged)
Is there a “bull’s eye” effect? (too shiny container/one fl ower or form too large/one color too strong, etc.)
Are the mechanics suffi ciently strong and stable for the materials?
Does the design fi t the placement? (height, depth, width, overall size)
Is design style appropriate? (for room, for occasion, for theme)
Are the container and the plant materials compatible?
Does the accessory (if used) add to the design? (appropriate color, size, visual weight, placement)
Has repetition been used (of a color, line, shape, etc.)
Is there contrast (of colors, or textures, or shape, etc.) - but not too much (busy, con-fusing, cluttered)?
Are the materials organized to achieve a design style and unity? Are the mechanics (oasis, tape, needlepoint, etc.) neat and hid
den? Has one color dominated rather than using equal amounts of
each? [Ex. do not use equal amounts red, white and blue.] Does the design have a center of interest or focal area? (if tradi
tional) Is the focal area correct? (not too large or too small, and not
tightly packed together, and not dead center for the bull’s eye ef-fect)
Does rhythm [visual movement through the design] fl ow and move around the design or does placement of materials, or forms, or colors stop rhythm?
Are plant materials, (fl owers and foliage) and accessories in scale to one another?
Are the overall proportions of one area to another correct. (Ex. container to plant materials)
Are colors and forms grouped - not scattered in a spotty effect?A few tips on design:
Always condition materials before arranging Finish the back of the design A few pieces of charcoal added to the water will help keep long
lasting foliage designs or forced branches “sweet”
~ Part 3
The Armchair Gardener
Arrangement for a seated meal should be easy to see over (low) Arrangement for a buffet table should be at back, or tall enough to
see under the design Use a toothpick, pin or wire through the center of a drooping
bloom to be able to use in a design (gebera, zinnia, etc.) Place a pipe cleaner inside daffodil stem to steady and bend into
shapes Run a small dowel or green stake up through the stem of amaryllis
or other large hollow stem for support Place plants in baggies to use in large designs (attach to green
stakes or branch) Fill a tall container with sand and put mechanics in the top for
arranging Use elastic bands or appropriate size wire to group/bundle plant
materials Use toothpicks, skewers, or thin branches to fasten fruit and
vegetables in designs Use fl oral tape and wire on back of leaves to bend and shape

Jo e W il l i a m s H omesIn August of last year, Joe Williams fi nished the last home he would build. That project was to be the culmination of forty years of service to over 800 families in Coweta and surrounding counties.
“I was a young man desperate to do something with my life – something which would offer fi nan-cial rewards as well as a sense of accomplishment. I wanted to prove I could be somebody and I wanted people to notice. I read a lot of books about business, customer service and how to orga-nize a plan of action. But nothing in those books prepared me for the real world realities I would encounter once I started. So, for the next forty years, it was two steps forward and one back. But I was headed in the right direction and it eventually worked.”
Early on, Joe found a niche’ in the market providing homes for families of low to moderate income. He would arrange fi nancing with little or no down payment, and the monthly pay-ments were based on the family’s in-come. In the early days, those homes were of basic design, usually three bedrooms and one bath. But they
were well built and most were brick. The City of Newnan’s urban renewal program once provided the company with the opportunity to purchase several square blocks of newly developed lots for about $1,000 each. That project lasted about three years and some of the original families are still there today.
“I think that overall most of my customers were quite happy with their homes. I certainly made my share of mistakes, but I always tried to make the correction and do the right thing. There was, however, a hand full of people I was unable to please, no matter what I did. I suppose they, and I, were just not a good match and I’m sorry for that. But it always felt good when a prospective customer would say, “you built my family’s home when I was a child and I want you to build mine now.”
The home building industry has always been the hardest hit when the economy is ailing. But no one was prepared for what it would go through in this “Great Recession” which has touched nearly everyone for the past few years. When most home builders were packing up and leaving town, Joe Williams Homes remained in business, although serving fewer buyers. So, with an owner advancing in age and no one in line to take the helm, this forty year old business has proudly come to its end.

Parties For Kidz“It’s More Than A Business”
Our family business began in Sep-tember 2011 consisting of Tom, Jean-nie, Blake, Ashley, Landon our 8 year old grandson (who chooses the in-flatables and colors before purchase), and Stephen. Our only emphasis is having affordable parties for all chil-dren. We want all children to have a memorable party regardless of family income and we work very hard with our customers in making that hap-pen. We maintain this policy through listening to what our customers want, working out the many options we have to offer and making it affordable. We take to heart making every event a special memory … one a child won’t ever forget it. Something very important to us is to give back our time and business, we do this with all churches, the children’s department specifically. We set up inflatables, bring popcorn machines or any part of our inventory and all we ask is for a donation. We understand how hard it is to raise money for the children’s department, being the children’s direc-tor at our church, we always extend this helping hand to make sure fun reaches all of the children. We have been very blessed through our Lord and Savior ( JESUS) to grow so rapidly and have given all the credit to him. We wish to extend our inventory of fun that consists of multi-party themes, obstacle courses, jumpies, small and big slides ~ dry or wet, snow cones, cotton candy, canopies, tables and chairs. We are ready any day or weekend for a party of fun and we work with our customers if weather conflicts with your plans. We continue to have new items added to our inventory so always check our web-site or just give us a call. Also, don’t forget our biggest feature: free delivery, set up, clean up and pick up. We believe our inventory and work ethics fulfill the wants and needs for all. The best thing about this business, it’s just about fun and this makes it very special to our family.
Thank you, Tom Smrcina

Revised Compactor Site HoursCoweta County provides compactor sites across
the county for citizens to dispose of household trash and recyclables. Effective March 1, 2013, the hours of several of these sites will change. The new sched-ule was developed based on utilization and usage. Consideration was also given to proximity to other compactors sites and scheduled hours of operation as well. The new schedule will signifi cantly reduce cost to the county without signifi cantly reducing ser-vice. Even where hours have been decreased, there are other options within the area.
For the sites and the new hours of operation, check out the map at
http://www.coweta.ga.us/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=6838
The map can also be accessed via the County’s web site. Just go to www.coweta.ga.us and click on “revised compactor hours” in the Spotlight area of the home page.

The Thrill Of The Grill
by David Venable
(NAPS) Here are four tips every grill owner should follow:
Never flatten your burgers; youíll lose the juices that keep 1. them flavorful.
Grilled red meats need to rest for at least five minutes after 2. cooking. Food covers will protect the meat (as well as your entire barbecue) from bugs, pets and other uninvited guests.
Never use a fork to flip your food. You want to preserve those 3. juices and a fork pierces the outside. I recommend tongs for your everyday fare but for ribs, porterhouses, pizzas and big cuts of meat, try Mr. Bar-B-Q Stainless Steel Oversized Spatula from QVC. Thereíll be practically nothing you canít move.
While you can cook your entire meal on your grillóeverything 4. from steak and mushrooms to broccoli and friesósmaller foods tend to disappear down the grates unless you have skewers or, better yet, a grill basket. I like the Technique Stainless Steel BBQ Chefís Pan with Grill Basket Lid thatís made of tightly woven mesh, so you can roast seeds or even pop popcorn.
QVC Program Host David Venable is the author of the cookbook “In the Kitchen with David: Comfort Foods That Take You Home.” He gives 3.5 million weekly viewers an inside look at his “kitchen” as the host of QVC’s most popular cooking show, ìIn the Kitchen with David.

Automobile engines are very complicated pieces of machin-ery and have many metal parts that rotate and reciprocate at high speeds and close toler-ances. Years ago engines would last less than 100,000 miles and would then require major re-pairs or even a complete rebuild. Now, the engines in most of our cars are designed to last be-tween 100,000 and 200,000 miles before needing even minor work. This improvement is mostly due to better manufacturing tech-niques, more advanced materi-als, and tighter manufacturing tolerances. Advancements have also been made in the type and quality of engine lubricating oils. Proper lubrication of the places inside your engine where metal parts contact other metal parts effects the heat generated, the noise made, and the longevity of all those critical components.
Fortunately for us, automo-tive engineers have taken care of all the details, determining such things as viscosity, addi-tives, temperatures, and even oil change intervals. Once again,
CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Check Engine Oil Level part 1 …
perusing your Owner’s Manual will provide you a proper educa-tion, especially the location of the dipstick and the fi ll tube as well as the recommended kind of oil and the oil change interval. But you as the driver or owner still have the responsibility of assuring that the engine in your car has the correct type and amount of oil. Check the oil level every month and add as neces-sary and change the oil at the recommended intervals, either months or miles. Don’t second guess the engineers, they know what they’re doing, you may not. If there is either too much or (more likely) too little oil, the engine will not be happy and will not provide you with the per-formance and longevity you ex-pect.
Realize that the idiot light on your dash measures oil pressure, not oil amount. It lights after the oil pressure goes below a minimum setting. It has little to do with oil level. When the light comes on, it could be too late to save the engine. Checking your car’s oil level is a good habit to
get into since it will indicate that an oil top up or oil change is required soon. You should also keep a written record in a log book of the oil changes and other maintenance done to your vehicle either by you or a me-chanic. I log the date and miles when I do an oil change myself and then calculate when the next oil change is due. This way it doesn’t sneak up on me and I can plan it around the weather, other activities, or oil and fi lters on sale. Checking oil every few weeks is OK unless you already know you have a leak or other problem and want to check it more frequently.
Checking the level of the oil in your vehicle’s engine is very simple. Even on a dirty, dusty, greasy engine, checking the oil doesn’t have to be messy. Just be careful. Here are a few simple rules. Make sure your car is on level ground so the oil isn’t all at one end of the engine. Check the oil only when it is cold and the engine is turned off. When the engine is running, the oil is pumped to all kinds of nooks and crannies inside the engine and becomes very hot due to friction. If you check the oil when it is hot, it will still be in all those nooks and crannies or draining back down to the sump or oil pan where the oil resides and where the dipstick contacts the oil supply, giving you an in-accurate low reading and lead-ing to a possible over-fi ll.
