A message from the principal, Bob Rowe

Scott Knochelman Scholarship

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Covington Catholic High School,Musician Chris Daughtry sings about going home to a place where he belongs. In

the last few months many of you have returned to Covington Catholic for the first time to see a campus that encompasses our state-of-the-art facilities. I am happy that I had the opportunity to meet so many of you at the reunions that took place on campus or at the golf outing. As I listened to you relive your treasured memories, amazing tales,

and personal experiences about your years at CCH, it reminded me of what a special place Covington Catholic remains to its alumni. Many of you talked about the positive influence of teachers and coaches, whether it was Jack Kaelin, Dan Tieman, Tim Haders, or Lynn Ray among others. Overall, the theme that was repeated was that these outstanding educators had a powerful impact in and out of the classroom setting on many Colonels. Their efforts helped to lay the foundation for you to be lifelong learners, to care for one another, and to measure yourselves against the gospel values of Christ.

These fine individuals continue this tradition today along with the rest of our administration and faculty. We recently received some great news that four of our current seniors were recognized as National Merit Semi-Finalists – the highest number in the Diocese of Covington. We also learned that the graduating class of 2009 earned a 24.8 composite average score on the ACT. This composite score is the highest average that a CCH graduating class has achieved in at least the last fifteen years. An excellent education is practically assumed at a school like Covington Catholic. With 7.5 million dollars in scholarship money garnered last year, our students continue to attend top universities and are well prepared for their post-secondary educational opportunities. Our entire learning community is committed to continuing to raise the bar academically.

Not only are we having success academically but our young men are also leading by example in other areas as well. Throughout this school year, the students have shown great leadership at Mass and other religious and service activities. They are striving for excellence in our thirty-nine extracurricular activities and nine interscholastic sports. Socially, I often witness the camaraderie our students possess and routinely witness the formation of lifetime friendships as they support one another in the school building, on the fields of play, in the stands and at all of our extracurricular events.

Administrators, alumni, parents, and friends recognize that CCH offers a very positive atmosphere and has something to offer every young man. Nonetheless, not every student can afford the experience that you as alumni experienced at CCH. This year’s annual appeal is 100% driven to help tuition assistance opportunities for those young men whose dream it is to be a Colonel. Last year we raised $192, 000 in our annual appeal effort; on the other hand, we gave out $212,000 in financial aid for the 2009-10 school year. With your help individually and collectively, you can make it possible for a student to attend Covington Catholic High School. Please help allow a student to experience CCH by contributing to this year’s annual appeal – a place where values and education are rooted.

Covington Catholic High School was established in 1925. Our mission is to educate young men spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. Covington Catholic is the only all-male high school in Northern Kentucky, and serves the parishes of

Blessed Sacrament, Mother of God, St. Agnes, St. Ann, St. Boniface/St. James, St. John, St. Joseph and St. Pius X. Visit our website at www.covcath.org.

Each year a senior in the work study program is awarded the Scott Knochelman Scholarship. This summer Daniel Joseph Ott had a pleasant surprise when he met Scott’s dad, Ray Knochelman. Daniel was working over the summer when he was pulled aside one day to learn he was chosen for the Scott Knochelman scholarship. This meant he did not have to continue working in the work study program the rest of his senior year. Daniel was shocked, leaving him speechless as he tried to thank Mr. Knochelman for the honor. Daniel had worked in the program the past three years at CCH and was relieved to know he could dedicate more time to his studies and maybe join the Advanced Placement Physics study group after school.

Scott Knochelman died tragically in an automobile accident in November 1983 at the age of 25. Upon graduation in 1976, his time as a student came to an end but he continued to coach, teach and be a leader at Covington Catholic. This scholarship was set up after his death to help students in the work study program. Donations can be made to the Scott Knochelman Scholarship fund at anytime. To donate, please send a check to CCH, c/o Scott Knochelman Scholarship, 1600 Dixie Hwy, Park Hills, KY 41011.

Over 260 alumni, parents and friends of Covington Catholic had a fantastic time at the Gardens of Park Hills on October 17th. Thanks to Chuck McHale ’84 and his staff at The Gardens who made the night an enjoyable one. The event helped raise $44,000! The proceeds of this dance will support the boosters and the school. Covington Catholic High School would like to express our gratitude to chairpersons Gina Best and Kathy Guess for orchestrating a successful event. This year the class of ’79 decided to include the Big Blue Hullabaloo as part of their reunion festivities. It was an evening where everyone had a great time socializing, dancing and doing some Christmas shopping at the silent auction tables.

Several classes have run with the “challenge” of helping to fund a student that qualifies for financial aid. Many classes have used their company’s matching gift dollars to help push them along in their quest for the honor. Will it be one of the classes listed below or will a class come out of nowhere to claim the bragging rights and glory with being the first class to meet the “challenge”? The results to date are as follows:

Cov Cath Linked in Networking EventTwenty four Colonels gathered on Sept. 16th to

network with fellow Cov Cath LinkedIn alumni in the school’s cafeteria. Mr. Bob Rowe, principal and Sue Finke, Director of Development spoke for a few minutes and answered some questions about the school and the student body. Dan Tieman ’58 surprised the alumni by joining the group. Then everyone split into groups and each member gave a five minute introduction which was followed by open socializing and networking.

The next Alumni networking event is expected to be held in December. Our goal is to have a meeting every three months. The December event will possibly be held prior to a home basketball game or at a restaurant. More details are to follow.

The following attended the alumni event on 9/16: Mike Sutton ’75Jeff Wigger ’77Dave Bockweg ’79Dan Gamel ’79A.J. Schreiver ’79Dave Schulte ’79Dave Topmiller ’79Jack Voet ’79

Alumni SpotlightTed edgington, class of 1984

Ted is the second youngest of seven raised by his parents, Jerald and Joan in Covington. Coming from his grade school St. Ben’s in Covington, he did not know anyone when he started at Covington Catholic. When asked what his fondest memory of school was, he responded, “All the new friends I made while attending Covington Catholic.” Ted played football and baseball at Covington Catholic all four years. He was a member of the student senate and president his senior year. After graduating in 1984, he matriculated to the University of Dayton where he played football all four years for the Flyers and majored in law enforcement.

Just out of college, he joined the Covington Police department. He married Alecia Webb who is now the 63rd District State Representative for Kentucky. Ted’s daughter, Jill, is an 8th grader at St. Agnes. One of his accolades is being awarded SWAT Officer of the Year in 2003. In March 2009, he retired from the force after 20 years.

In 2007, Ted was inducted into the Covington Catholic High School Hall of Fame for football. He was a two way starter at fullback and outside linebacker and one of the

Northern Kentucky area’s top rushers his senior year.

Ted now is head coach of the 7th and 8th grade middle school football teams. Both teams are in their second year participating in the league. The teams worked very hard over the summer, practicing 3 days a week for 2 hours, for a total of 16-20 hours a week. Their hard work paid off. The 8th grade middle school football team won the Large School division championship

of the No. KY Middle School Football League, beating Campbell County 44-8. In the Small School division championship, the 7th grade team finished runners-up to Newport Catholic.

Other alumni who have returned to coach in the junior high program are Don Bieger ’88, Gerry Dressman ’86, Kevin Lonneman ’01, Don Martin ’82, Bob Morris ’76, Bob Pauly ’72, Todd Schulte ’83, Tim Shields ’82, and Chris Wagner ’89.

Ted is looking forward to next year. He is very grateful to be involved and instrumental in the lives of these young men as they look forward to becoming future Colonels.

Catholic: Jack Kaelin, Tim Haders & Dan Tieman. These men have graciously agreed to chair this year’s Annual Appeal. They have contributed a total of 116 years of service to Covington Catholic. There is not a student in the past 46 years who has not been influenced by at least one of these fine gentlemen. Please consider giving to this year’s annual appeal. The need is more important than ever. 100% of funds received during this year’s annual appeal will go to support tuition assistance.

In the words of Tim Haders

“You may have left, but in your place is a young man with the same hopes and

dreams, the same humor or depth, the same creativity and joy. They are the reason we

ask you to support Covington Catholic. By assisting them,

I believe, you assist yourself.”

The 27th Annual St. Elizabeth Healthcare / Covington Catholic Alumni Golf Outing was held this year at Summit Hills Country Club. Everyone enjoyed being able to play Summit’s beautiful course, a first for many who are not members of the club. The weather cooperated this year unlike the rain that put a damper on the afternoon golfers last year. It is always wonderful to see alumni, parents, friends, and fathers and sons playing at the outing.

For the first time ever, we sold out both the morning and the afternoon flights. A record number of golfers (288) filled the course making this the largest golf outing of the year for Summit Hills. The outing raised approximately $35,000 which will help support the Booster organization as well as the operating budget of the school.

Once again we want to thank our devoted committee members and volunteers who helped make this outing successful. The outing could not have happened without their help. We also want to thank our many sponsors. Please review the list of sponsors and patronize them when you are in need of their services. Your continued commitment to this event has helped us to sustain this great tradition for 27 years. Here’s to another great outing!

Teachers Wish List Save Money on your Taxes . . . and Help Cov Cath in the process!

With the Diocesan freeze on tuition this school year, funds and resources are tighter than ever. Many supplies and improvements to our classrooms have simply been put on hold. As year-end approaches, we humbly ask for your consideration in including Covington Catholic into your or your company’s annual donations. This is just a partial list of items that the school needs to keep the technology up to date and what our teachers need to be effective in the classroom. A more complete list can be found at covcath.org/givingtocch/teacherswishlist. In addition, if your company has downsized and has surplus copiers, printers, plotters, or computer equipment less than 3 years old, we are always happy to accept these donations as well.

If you would like to donate funds in whole or in part for any of these items, please make sure to indicate that with your donation so that we can insure the funds are earmarked for that specific purpose. THANK YOU!!

12 Cov Cath Journal

Class of 1949 – On September 19th we celebrated our 60th reunion. Five of us attended the afternoon football game and saw CCH beat Newport Catholic. Later that evening our classmates and their wives had dinner at the Oriental Wok. It was an evening of good food, great memories and excellent company. Those in attendance were, Charles Breetz, Jack Brueggemann, Ed Buerkle, Bob Dault, Bob Ebelhardt, John Levan, Al Mayleben, Vince Melching, Jerry Moser, Fr. Bob Urlage, Larry Zembrodt.

Class of 1954 – The reunion for the 55th anniversary of our graduation was celebrated on Friday and Saturday, September 25th and 26th. On Friday evening we had a reception and dinner at the South Hills Civic Club. All classmates were contacted and 24 of a possible 30 were in attendance, with 17 spouses attending. On Saturday, we attended the Homecoming football game against Newport Catholic. A threat of rain that day reduced the expected 12 to six. The rain didn’t materialize and we enjoyed a 28 to 14 victory by the Colonels. The picture shows the six loyal Colonel supporters at half time. Following the game, we were joined by two more classmates and enjoyed a toast to the victors and we dissected the game in the school cafeteria. We were joined there by fellow alums from the Class of ’59. Principle Bob Rowe addressed the group gathered in the cafeteria and later Sue Finke led the Class of ’54 on a tour of the new athletic building and the Blessed Mother grotto. The Class of ’54 left the weekend with the greeting of “See you in 2014.”

Class of 1959 Golden Colonels – 57 classmates were in attendance for the 50th class reunion held at Covington Catholic on September 24th. Jim Short who taught from 1955-1959 was in attendance. Norm Ziegelmeyer who left CCH before graduating to serve in the military was awarded an honorary diploma from CCH. A great time was had by all. The class attended the football game the following day and had a couples party at Ft. Mitchell Country Club later that e v e n i n g . They are p lanning y e a r l y e v e n t s and a 55th reunion in 2014.

Class of 1964 – Celebrated their reunion on August 21st. Golf at Traditions kicked off the day followed that evening by a reception in the school cafeteria. 52 class members participated, along with Mr. Jack Payne (Math teacher), Mr. Howard Knachel (Chemistry), and Mr. Jack Kaelin (Economics). We found out the Mr. Kaelin is still active on the faculty at CCH by the way. Mr. Jack Payne read a letter from former school secretary, Ms. Betty Ewald, who sent her greetings even though she was unable to attend. Jim Kruer held his traditional trivia contest which was a huge success, and a decade of the rosary was prayed at the new grotto for the 16 deceased class members.

Principal Bob Rowe and Development Director Mrs. Sue Finke spoke to those in attendance, updating us on some of the recent accomplishments of our students and graduates and filling us in on some of the new campus additions. The event was a huge success. Many thanks to the school administration for their help, especially Mr. Rowe and Mrs. Finke.

Class of 1969 – On the 3rd weekend of October the class of 1969 had our 40th reunion. Due to poor weather conditions and inept golfers we cancelled the Friday outing at Boone Woods on the 16th. We did regroup that evening at CCH for a stag, where many attended and old stories became less believable. On Saturday CCH played Highlands in football as the evening awaited us. There was a DJ, food and couples at the Devou club house till midnight. A small handful actually danced at least once. The Kohlhepp’s invited everyone to their house after the reunion. We appreciate those who made the supreme effort to attend our planned events. Mark Pfeiffer

Class of 1979 – On Friday, August 21, about 30 classmates enjoyed catching up in our own section near the right field bullpen to watch the Florence Freedom baseball game. We hooted and hollered when we were announced over the intercom. We had fun rooting for fellow Colonel Tim Grogan ‘02 who plays shortstop for the Freedom (had some great plays and timely RBI single!). It was even more fun running out on the field to the first base line in front of the home dugout to lead the entire stadium doing the YMCA! We are still young at heart!! During this crazy dancing, I spoke to Tim Grogan by the dugout. He admitted to telling the guys in the dugout that this was his high school! The Freedom’s post-game fireworks were awesome and then came a spirited rendition of the fight song. After the game about 20 alumni went to the Pub in the Crestview Hills Town Center, to share more memories. Earlier in the day, several groups enjoyed a round of golf at traditions with the class of 1964. On October 17th the class met at the Wessels Inc. Office Complex before we went to watch the Football Colonels clash with the Highlands Bluebirds. It was a great day for football. After the game the class went to Mary Queen of Heaven for Mass. Later that evening several classmates of 1979 joined the Big Blue Hullabaloo as a

continuation of their r e u n i o n . It was also a n n o u n c e d that our class had raised $6,000 in d o n a t i o n s to sponsor a needy Cov Cath student’s tuition for the 2010-11 school year. This group of donors is challenging the rest of the ‘79 class to donate enough to sponsor this student’s tuition for the 2011-2012 school year. What a great group of guys!

The Class of 1984 – Our reunion took place on October 9th and 10th. The golf was rained out so the reunion started with a dance at Receptions in Erlanger. The dance was held in conjunction with the class of 1984 from Notre Dame. 42 graduates showed up to be entertained by The Doghouse band. Chris Marconi (Class of 1984), Chuck Davis (Class of 1984) and Eric Thelen (Class of 1983) entertained the crowd until after midnight. It was a great time to catch up with friends and classmates. A good time was had by all. We started Saturday at The Gardens owned by Chuck McHale (Class of 1984) for a pregame get together. We then ventured to the football game to watch the Colonels take on the Scott Eagles. It was a great weekend to get back together and reminisce about the great days of being a Colonel. Thanks to the reunion committee from Notre Dame and their work that went into the reunion. We are looking forward to the 30th.

Class of 1989 – The class of 1989 celebrated their 20th reunion in style. They started the weekend with a great football game where CCH beat Dixie. With this great victory in mind, they went to the South Hills Civic Club to touch base and catch up with each other. Saturday they started the day early with a tour of the school with Mr. Rowe. After the tour everyone got on charter buses and went to Keeneland for a great day of racing. Eric Suetholz and Dave Landwehr bought a block of seats so all of the alumni could sit together.

Class of 1994 – The reunion was a huge success. We had 20 former students come Friday night with a joint reunion with Notre Dame. It was nice to catch up with everyone and reunite old friendships. The game on Saturday was well attended. We had over 15 students for the event. It was nice to catch the Colonels in action vs. the Bluebirds even though we lost the game. The atmosphere was electric and the traditions were the same. The same cheers, the same environment. I realized why we had such a good time in high school. Since I have graduated I have been to multiple high school games and no other student body exemplifies the passion that Covington Catholic students possess. I know everyone had a great time. Thanks for all your help. Go Colonels!

Class of 1999 – On Saturday, September 26, the Colonels from the Class of 1999 had our 10 year reunion, kicked off with a football win over NCC. Thirty-five Colonels attended the football game and spent a few hours in the cafeteria after the game speaking with Mr. Rowe and members of the Classes of ‘54 and ‘59. It was great to meet fellow Colonels from years ago, as well as to tour the new athletic facilities on campus. We then spent the evening at Zazou in Main Strasse (Covington), where more than 90 Colonels and significant others caught up with each other and “relived the glory days” with stories about the fields, the locker room, the classroom, and the lunch room. It was a great time, and I’d like to thank everyone who came and those who couldn’t make it, for being so willing to help out. Special thanks to Mickey Fritz, Greg Popham, and Manning Hanser for your help in getting the Class of 1999 back together. I’d like to ask members of the Class of 1999 to send your updated contact information to [email protected] so that we can keep in contact, making future reunions easy to plan.

Golf ’69 and ’84 State Champion Reunion – On Sat., October 10th the 1969 and 1984 State Champion Golf teams were honored at halftime of the Cov Cath vs. Scott football game. The 1969 golf team was celebrating their 40 year anniversary of winning the Kentucky State Golf Championship and the 1984 golf team was celebrating their 25th. On hand from the 1969 golf team were Dennis Laake, Bob Schaar, Denny Hurley, Rick Williams, Rob Stansel and Tom Leonard. From the 1984 state champion team were Rick Blank, Steve Flesch, Chris Pieper, Tim Schrand, Eric Wehrman and Coach Steve Sorrell. Also present were Mr. & Mrs. Bob Schultz representing their son Bob Schultz Jr. a member of the 1984 golf team who died tragically in 1985. A reception was held in the cafeteria where many golfing stories were relived, and a good time was had by all. A note of interest from the 1969 golf team, Denny Hurley was a five time individual regional winner beginning in 1966 as an eighth grader. From the 1984 golf team, Steve Flesch is a current member of PGA tour and is a four time winner on the tour.

Reverend Charles Weber1923-2009

To say that Father Weber was fiscally conservative would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. Yet that conservatism served Covington Catholic well for nearly 45 years and at one crucial time, saved the school from financial ruin.

It was the early spring of 1971 when the CCH community was anything but a community. The school was embroiled in a chaotic polarization of teaching philosophy. At that time, Father Weber handled all of the accounting functions, including tuition payments, parish subsidies, cafeteria expenses, athletic costs, and curriculum expenses, all while being pastor at St. John’s Church in Covington. Fr. Weber kept the school on firm financial ground but was personally hurt by the school’s overall condition and the events that occurred. According to Loraine Von Handorf, who worked for Father Weber at the time, “There were tears in his eyes on more than one occasion.”

If you believed Father Weber when he said, “They should lock up these boys until they are 21” you did not know him very well. According to George Schneider, who spent 30 years working with Father Weber, “It was never about himself; it was always about the students”. And if you thought he was opposed to athletics, keep in mind that in December 1976, his vote was the tie-breaking vote in the 3-2 decision that allowed the SCORE committee to enlarge the sports complex.

The word dedication is used often these days. Father Weber’s service to his country as a World War II veteran, and to Covington Catholic as a teacher, pastor, accountant and all around manager, gives true meaning to “dedication”.

And when that final credit took place, as always, Father Weber’s books were balanced.Submitted by Ken Gross, Former CCH Principal
