Choronga Safaris Bowhunting Trip 2016 For many years Choronga has been a faithful supporter of the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth and annually donates a hunt for the live auction. This last September, myself and my two brothers went on the trip offered during the auction. It was for 4 guys over 10 days with a discounted trophy list. My father was to the be 4th but due to health reasons, could not attend. After being met in Johannesburg, we drove 4 hours north to the lodge. The next morning we shot in our bows and were in the blinds by 9 a.m. We were the only ones at the lodge and each of us had a PH with us the whole time to help judge quality. It was the dry season and warm so the animals were frequenting the water holes. Each one of us had a vastly different list of trophies that we were after so they sent us off to different areas that would match up better to our list. Over the next 8 days, we killed a total of 19 animals that included Nyala, Eland, Kudu, Impala, Black and Blue Wildebeest, Duiker, Sable, Blesbok, Waterbuck, Zebra and Warthog. All the animals were SCI silver and gold level and the Sable I took is pending #5 or #6 SCI with a bow. We even had a little fun shooting Guinea Fowl and went out at night and shot SpringHares with our bows. Evan Sloan and his staff were very professional and courteous and our first experience with Africa was flawless. I am looking forward to going back already. As a board member, I could not be more proud to have Choronga as a supporter of the club. Kyle Whitesell e Covey Rise Newsletter of the Sportmen’s Club of Fort Worth WINTER/SPRING 2017

2016 Annual Delta Waterfowl Youth Duck Cowtown ChapterAs volunteer workers arise to a beautiful sunrise on the covered patio overlooking a crisp 20-acre lake compliments of Mr. Brent Gallo, we swiftly eat breakfast, throw a line in the water and prepare for the arrival of the 30-40 anxious youngsters. What awaits them is a fantastic day of hunting, gun safety, and one of the most exhilarating days of their youth. Each boy or girl is given a gift basket full of duck calls, stickers, and hats for the youngsters to take home with them thanks in no small part to the contribution by the Sportmen’s Club of Fort Worth. As all the volunteers, kids, and parental supervision congregate, we are met with a gun safety specialist who teaches these future hunters gun safety and lets them interact with handling the shotgun to teach proper ways to hold, carry, load, shoot, and unload their firearms.

Once we have educated all on how important firearm safety is, we set off to the Double G Ranch in Poyner, Texas where another private 30-acre tank awaits us. There are four blinds set up on the inside part of the tank dam along a walk way. On the other side are 30 dozen pen-raised mallards awaiting release. As everyone gets situated in their blinds, the mallards are

released to take flight just over the heads of the anticipating kids. As these ducks come flying over the dam, the challenge of a free-flighting mallard finally hits them. “This is hard Dad!” one kid yells out after a couple shots. As they start to get the hang of it, smiles illuminate the event but not just from young boys and their fathers, but young girls as well. Some are better shots than the boys.

As the event winds down, we (volunteers) are brought with a sense of delight and accomplishment. This is the future of our hunting grounds and we were able to share what we know and love with boys and girls who can’t help but reciprocate the joy on their faces. Once pictures are taken, we head back to main camp where a huge BBQ lunch is provided. Lastly, we couldn’t let these youngsters go without showing them how to process the duck for future meals.

The day ends in nothing but smiles and thank you’ s and one of the only things a Delta Waterfowler is working for has just been realized and brought with it a future memories and hunts to come. The day, and the experiences, would not have been possible without the strong partnership and support of the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth.

Arlington Archery Arlington Independent School DistrictI am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your generous donations to the students of the Arlington Independent School District. Due to your support, we will be servicing over 400 archers in the 2016-2017 school year. As I am sure you are all aware, public school districts cannot support programs such as ours on their own. It takes a tremendous amount of support, both financially as well as voluntarily, to operate a first-class organization. I have every intent to give your organization the credit it so well deserves in our community. If you all have banners, signs, etc. that I could hang in our facility, please let me know, as I would be proud to display them so that folks might see them. Thank you, thank you and thank you again for your continued support. I pray that our relationship might continue in the future. I look forward to attending your annual banquet again I would love to bring some students by sometime to say thank you in person. Please do not hesitate to contact me for anything that you all may need from me.

Operation Ophans, Inc. On behalf of the directors of Operation Orphans, Inc. I would like to thank you for the generous donation, which will benefit the children who participate in the “Take a Child Hunting and Fishing” programs. It is certainly appreciated. The success of Operation Orphans, Inc. depends on the generosity of others. For 56 years this organization has offered less fortunate children from all across Texas the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and meet others who care about their welfare.

During the four hunts held last season, 193 boys and girls from 18 residential facilities and foster homes participated and harvested 258 animals. Our first hunt this season held in October had 39 girls harvesting 40 animals. Since 1960, 18,319 kids have participated. In 2004, Operation Orphans, Inc. began a fishing program, thus far, 747 kids have enjoyed the program. It has been a pleasure increasing the opportunity for less privileged children to enjoy the outdoors.

Your gift will go a long way assisting in the education of children to the joys and responsibilities of the outdoors.

Foster’s Home for Children 2016 has been a year of memories for our children. And you helped create many of those! Due to your generosity, our children enjoyed fishing trips, hunting experiences, camping, visiting wildlife parks, and enjoying the great outdoors in other creative ways.

You provided fishing equipment and gear for a trip to Lake Fork for ten of our kids. A Metroplex bass club guided our kids for two memorable days. A number of our kids, both boys and girls, experienced the thrill of bagging their first deer. You bought fishing and hunting licenses for those who needed them. You provided many of our kids the opportunity to see wildlife up close at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Several homes went to the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. One home enjoyed a tour of Carlsbad Caverns. All of our homes enjoyed visits to State Parks because of the passes you purchased.

For many of our kids in care, outdoor activities such as these simply would not happen in the homes they come from. You created memories that otherwise wouldn’t exist! Thanks for your generosity in making this a great year one for our kids.

Frontier CampFrontier Camp has been hosting Angel Tree Week for children of prisoners for many year. A good portion of the campers come from Tarrant County. A child of a prisoner is six times more likely to go to prison than a child whose parents have not been incarcerated. What if we could break that cycle and replace bad and unlawful habits and activities of Angel Tree campers with ones that are wholesome and change agents? In many cases, AT campers have seen gun violence in their neighborhoods and perhaps even a crime involving a firearm is what put their parent or parents behind bars. What if we encouraged proper use of firearms in a sporting manner? What if we exposed the campers to archery? What if we gave the campers a win by catching a largemouth bass?

SCFW has partnered with us several times over the years so that we can answer these questions and encourage healthy participation in the outdoors by Angel Tree campers. This past spring, SCFW equipped us with new rifles, shotguns, bows, arrows and fishing equipment for these special Tarrant County campers to enjoy. With the change in attitudes towards the outdoors and sporting equipment such as firearms, comes a change in outlook on life. We are seeing campers make better choices in just one week. And, we are seeing campers make better choices in life as they come back to camp year after year. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of Angel Tree children and teens. Thank you.

Fort Worth Youth Shooting FoundationWe had our “Outdoor Experience” Day at Alpine Range on October 15, 2016. Turn out was really good and we gave away lots of random prizes related to hunting and outdoor activities. This is our second year, we also held this event in 2015 and now we have had just over 200 kids attend and participate in the events. Participants in this event were NWTF, Mule Deer Foundation, Wild Sheep Foundation, Defender Outdoors, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Alpine Range, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Alvarado Archery and sponsors like Friends of the NRA, Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth, Dallas Safari Club, Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops. This event is put on in conjunction with Texas Youth Education in Shooting Sports and we also put on youth shoots at Fort Worth Trap and Skeet. I am currently working on a summer program for a rifle and shotgun introduction classes to be held in 2017. Our next shoot will be January 14th at FWTS and we expect 100- 125 shooters. Fort Worth Claymores now has put on two events called “Give It a Shot” to introduce new shooters to the sport. This is a basic 2 hour class to give the new shooters a taste of the competitive clay sports. Since we started this class, we have had the opportunity to speak with the Benbrook High School ROTC program director and a church group to introduce them to the shooting sports as well. We are awaiting final decision from each of these to move forward with a program. We have given the 2 hour class to approximately 45 kids. Claymores have sponsored several shoots including a State event open to all shooters of any ability and skill. Our first State event was held at Fort Worth Trap and Skeet last April 29/30 and was a great success with 125 kids from the north Texas area attending.

Clifton Main Street Clifton Main Street Forum in Clifton, Texas wishes to extend a heartfelt ‘Thank you’ to the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth for their sponsorship of the FallFest KidFish Tank in October 2016!

FallFest is a yearly festival held in downtown Clifton, population 3,442. The day’s event features activities for everyone, including a car show, Market on Main Street, Children’s area with interactive exhibits for all ages, a Nationally Recognized Quilt Auction, Bosque Art’s Center Art Show, 5k & 10k Fun Run and more! Over the course of the event, 8 hours, the City typically sees over 3,000 in attendance at the event, easily making it the largest event in Clifton every year.

In 2014, Kid Fish joined FallFest for the first time, offering a unique experience many in rural Texas take for granted, fishing. The Kid Fish organization works throughout the state offering a catch and release fishing tank stocked with 3-5 pound catfish. Alongside the area Game Wardens, and Bosque County landowners, Clifton Main Street was able to offer the exhibit for no charge to the participants. The first year over 500 children were able to fish! For many of those children, it was their first time to hold a fishing pole! The next year, in 2015 those numbers increased to over 700 children participating.

Everyone involved was able to see that KidFish was becoming more than just an “exhibit” at FallFest. It had become a unique opportunity for memories to be made for the children participating, the Game Wardens volunteering and even the spectators watching. It was truly an experience and one we wanted to continue to be able to offer.

As most everyone holding a large event will tell you, sponsorships are key to the event’s success. We had worked alongside local landowners to assist us in sponsoring the event for the first few years. In 2016, a Bosque County Game Warden and a local ranch owner approached us and encouraged us to submit a grant application through the Sportsmen’s Club of Forth Worth, as they both agreed KidFish

needed to continue. The Sportsmen’s Club of Forth Worth graciously awarded our grant and ensured that the KidFish experience would continue for FallFest in 2016.

On October 15, in downtown Clifton, thanks to the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth, KidFish returned with Texas State Game Wardens from Bosque, Coryell and Hamilton counties coming to assist the children fishing and undoubtedly making memories for all who picked up a fishing pole or watched one of the children pick one up.

“As a supporter of the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth, and believing in the importance of introducing children to the outdoors, I was excited to hear of your willingness to sponsor our KidFish event at FallFest. During the event, regardless if a child caught a fish, no one left without a smile. As a Texas Game Warden, promoting the outdoors and being the person who introduces some of these children to just a small piece of what the outdoors offer, …well, it’s just one of the best parts of the job. Thank you again, for your support in this and of our Texas Game Wardens across the state.” Bosque County Game Warden

The City of Clifton, Clifton Main Street, participating Game Wardens and parents and grandparents of all involved that day extend our most heartfelt thanks to the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth for their part in the 2016 KidFish experience.
