The Correspondent Spring 2017 President’s Reflection: As I once again sit to write my reflection, I am pondering the “Moments of God’s Grace” I have witnessed these first six months as your Christ Child Society president. I have been so blessed! Our Christ Child Society mission is to serve children and youth in need with the spirit of a love for Christ. As we grow in our faithfulness to serve those in need with love and compassion, we can see God’s grace abounding because grace is God dwelling in us. I have seen the grace of God at work in the lives and actions of our members as they carry out our mission and it is truly heart-warming. As our members volunteer with children in the PALS and Treasures Programs, I see the children light up and smile with the attention that is given to them. I‘ve seen our members gather together to bundle diapers and put together layettes at our Layette meetings. They have donated baby board books, knit, crocheted and tied blankets at our Make A Difference Day all for the benefit of newborn babies to get a loving start in life. I’ve witnessed our parish representatives working with their principals to identify needs; donations pouring in to assist these children through the Christmas Stocking Program leading to many being touched by Christ’s love through our members’ generosity this Christmas. With donations for the auction, our membership gave generously as well which will benefit many children in our local Catholic schools. Grace is palpable each time our members come together in friendship as at our Aces and Faces event, the Bunco, Connections and Gift Gathering evenings, our Christmas Open House and the Annual Auction and Luncheon. When we pray for our members in times of sickness and grief, grace is there. When members share their faith, hope and love with those in need and one another moments of God’s grace shine brightly. Thank you for being part of this amazing chapter. Thank you for sharing your love and goodness in so many ways. Thank you for allowing God’s grace to touch me through you! It is truly a gift I treasure. God Bless You, Ann 1

President’s Reflection:

As I once again sit to write my reflection, I am pondering the “Moments of God’s Grace” I have witnessed these first six months as your Christ Child Society president.

They have donated baby board books, knit, crocheted and tied blankets at our Make A Difference Day – all for the benefit of newborn babies to get a loving start in life.

When members share their faith, hope and love with those in need and one another – moments of God’s grace shine brightly.

Thank you for being part of this amazing chapter. Thank you for sharing your love and goodness in so many ways. Thank you for allowing God’s grace to touch me through you! It is truly a gift I treasure.

God Bless You, Ann

Easter is a time of celebration, renewal and rejoicing. It brings brighter days of spring and never more so than when we have an opportunity to share our blessings with those in need.

A huge THANK YOU in advance for your continued participation in our annual Easter Shoes campaign. Each year our generous membership supports this program by making monetary donations. Your contributions allow us to purchase gift cards to Payless Shoes, providing our recipients with an

In honor of Mary Virginia Merrick’s 150th Birthday, Connections planned an appetizer recipe exchange held at the home of Elita Balfour. It was a festive evening with lots of conversation and a wonderful opportunity for many to make new friends. With about 40 members in attendance, there was a wide assortment of delicious hors d’oevres. They celebrated Mary Virginia with a prayer and sang “Happy Birthday”. Kelly Rouse compiled a recipe book and mailed it to the members in attendance which was received just in time for Thanksgiving gatherings.

More than 120 members attended the beautiful Christmas Open House & Brunch at the lovely home of Ana and George Raptis. The stunning floral displays were designed by Nicole of the Bee Cottage, and the delicious brunch was catered by Mary Pat Brandmeyer. The generous guests brought over 4,500 diapers for the Layette program, which overflowed throughout the beautiful living room. Co-chairs Mary Hatton, Lisa Mohr and Valerie McAndrews were overwhelmed by the generosity of the members, and grateful to the Raptis' for opening their spectacular home and backyard for this festive Christmas celebration.

The Christmas Stocking Fund was another huge success thanks to the generosity of our members.

A Loving Gift from a Beloved Christ Child Member, Sharon Thralls

I am pleased to announce a wonderful blessing has been bestowed upon the Christ Child Society of Pasadena and St. Philip the Apostle School. In her will, our dear Sharon Thralls has left a sum of money to Christ Child Society to establish a yearly $2000 scholarship at St. Philip the Apostle School for a student in need. Sharon was instrumental in beginning the school board at St. Philip the Apostle School and St. Philip’s was also her parish. With the funds given to CCS, this scholarship will be given yearly to a student in need for decades to come, touching the lives of many children from the generosity of Sharon. The student in need receiving this scholarship will be determined by the principal and the money will be used for the educational costs at St. Philip’s. This money will be used exclusively for the purpose of this annual scholarship and held in a separate account. Sharon, we hope you can feel the love and gratitude of your fellow Christ Child members for this amazing gift that continues our mission so beautifully! As Mary Virginia Merrick said and Sharon demonstrated, “Nothing is ever too much to do for a child.”

With a grateful heart, Ann

Calling All Christ Child “History Buffs”

Would you be interested in learning more about how the Christ Child Society of Pasadena chapter evolved into the chapter we are today? We would like to establish a small committee to review past historical Christ Child documents and notebooks. In the light of limited storage, we need to consolidate older notebooks, and scan some of our older documents. We’d like to form at least a three-person committee who would be willing to research this possibility and work on this task. If you enjoy history and would like to take some walks down the Christ Child memory lane, please call Ann Sanders to volunteer. 626-791-3643

Happy New Year Ladies!!!

What a great way to end 2016!!! Through your generosity we received 4400 diapers! UNBELIEVABLE! We also received $3,290 in cash donations!!! This is going to be a great year here in Layettes!

We cannot thank you enough. We now have enough diapers to last us to the end of this layette season! Sue, Marge and I are so grateful. Thank you!

Now, down to business. With the diapers taken care of for the rest of the year, we can now turn our focus on board books! Adding board books to the layettes just makes them so much better! Not only will the moms and babies love them but board books are also important for a child’s success as their literacy develops even from such a young age.

To date we have made 330 layettes and have given away about 150. This is a great start because we only have one more meeting left to make layette, March 22, and an inventory date of April 12th.

After inventory we will have many layettes completed. Our layette room at St Andrews will be filled with white bags ready to be delivered! And that is what Sue and I do, we deliver layettes around town until the end of August or until all the layette are gone. We give to Foothill Pregnancy Resource Center in Duarte and Pregnancy Help Center of San Gabriel Valley in Temple City. We deliver whenever they need more.

I like to take a minute every once in awhile and think about the new moms and babies who receive the layettes. I imagine the joy we bring to the mother when she knows that someone thought about her and her new baby enough to put together all these items. The soft towels and washcloths, the blankets and homemade knitted item, hats and booties make starting motherhood just a little bit easier for these moms! Sue and I may be the ones who deliver the layettes, but everyone in this community has a hand in making new moms feel the love! I also image somewhere down the line as years go by the new mom (not so new mom anymore) tells her little one about the layette she received and the sweetness of knowing someone cared.

This only happens because each one of you — whether you are an active member, a member who has done a lot in the past, or a new member just starting out — donate your time and talent to help these moms in need.

And so with the new year starting, we are starting up again and we invite you all to come on up on March 22nd at 9:30 to share in the fun, chatter, treats, and friendship that comes with making layettes.

Happy New Year to all, Sue, Marge and Sarah

The Annual Auction & Luncheon was held at Imperial Palace on Saturday, January 28th. It was a “fabulous” event and “fun” was had by all! There were two hundred Christ Child members and friends in attendance.

Everyone enjoyed shoppin’ at Shelley’s Fashions, The Classy Bag Lady, Magnolia Boutique and the amazing auction while sippin’ on tasty libations from Riley’s Pub! Thank you Kacey and staff for treating us all!

Beautiful centerpieces, handmade and arranged by Annamaria Palffy, adorned the dining tables. Thank you Annamaria! A delicious lunch of caesar salad, mushroom chicken, rice and grilled vegetables were served by Imperial Palace staff.

Ed Gervais, husband of Molly Gervais, was kind enough to be our live auctioneer! He did an amazing job and not only was entertaining but raised great money for Christ Child! Thank you Ed and thank you Molly!

After lunch Posh Boutique and JMcLaughlin entertained us with an amazing fashion show. The models were all gorgeous and did an amazing job on the runway modeling all the beautiful outfits provided by Posh and JMcLaughlin. Members Charlene Seley and Annette Brandin wowed us with their modeling debut! Thank you Charlene and Annette and all our models for the great show!

A big thank you to all the members and provisionals who made the day and event such a success! Please remember to thank Posh Boutique, JMcLaughlin and Magnolia Boutique by shopping and frequenting their shops as a thank you for their time and donations to Christ Child.

A special thank you to the Auction and Luncheon Committee whose work and vision created such a “fun” and “fabulous” event! Thank you to all the patrons whose generosity made it possible. A special thank also to Charles and Caroline Norman who generously donated beautiful plants for the event!

Last but not least, thank you to our wonderful and dedicated auction chairs, Angel Throop, Jennifer Gowen and Eileen Benson for their time, talents and leadership which gave us a truly spectacular experience of “Sippin and Shoppin” for our chapter! As soon as all the numbers are in we will let you know the final total raised for Christ Child and the precious children we serve!

Christ Child Society Service Projects

January 2017 Our Service Projects Group this fall has been working hard serving families and children from 19 organizations primarily in the San Gabriel Valley – 16 parish schools, 2 religious education programs and Good Shepherd Shelter. Our 26 enthusiastic Christ Child parish representatives work with principals, religious education leaders and parish staff to provide resources – both financial and informational – to the parish and school communities. Our parish reps provide needed Christ Child Pasadena financial resources and Layettes and work with principals to source families for the Christmas Stocking Fund and Easter Shoes Program. For the Fall Grant Cycle, our parish representatives uncover needs in each organization we serve. Despite our limited resources, we provided grants to each entity as well as three emergency grants.

Fall Grant Requests: Number of Requests: 18 Amount Requested: $53,426.88 Awards: $29,881.06 Emergency Grant Requests: Number of Requests: 3 Amount Requested: $4,287 Awards: $1,635

The grant requests included funds for uniforms, religious retreat fees, registration and book fees, some hot lunch fees, emergency kit purchases and books and supplies. Thanks to one of our parish reps, we were able to provide all our schools with suggestions on accessing the Federal Hot Lunch program, and we anticipate our schools will be able to access this resource next year. Our fall grant funding represents approximately 60% of our fiscal year budget, and we anticipate using the remaining 40% in our Spring Grant Cycle. To enhance our contribution to the families and children in these programs, this fall we provided a social service and educational resource list for our Parish Reps to share with principals and staff as we position ourselves as an information provider connecting family and school needs to community resources rather than being simply a financial resource. These wonderful grants, layettes, Christmas gifts and shoes for the children and families in our community are true gifts from the hearts of each of our members. Your incredibly generous support helps keep quality Catholic education an option for families in our community. Kathleen McCrimlisk and Peggy Parrish, Service Projects Co-Chairs

What’s Up with the Treasures Program?

We had a wonderful Fall term at St. Andrews School. We had a smaller group, only 20 students, which made our job pretty easy. They were a very bright and very darling group. Of course, the Graduation Luncheon at Mijares was the highlight.

We are hoping to take the program to Nativity School in El Monte for the Spring term. Ann Sanders and I will be meeting with them before the end of the month. So far, they seem to like the idea.

Our volunteers were terrific and we hope they will all continue.

Hot off the Press: Last week, Ann Sanders and I had a terrific meeting with Sister Stacey, the principal of Nativity Elementary School in El Monte. It is an exceptional school with innovative programs. They are extremely enthusiastic about having us come aboard this spring. Sister asked if she could sign a 20-year-contract with us!!

We will be with the fifth grade class on Wednesdays from 12:45-2:45. Our dates will be: 3/22, 3/29, 4/5, 4/12, 4/26, 5/3 and 5/10.

It is a large class of 30 students. We would love having more of you join us. If you are interested please email me @ [email protected].

Sister Stacy asked us if we’d be able to handle a sixth grade session as well. Perhaps teaching two grades will be a goal for another year. But we appreciated the inquiry!
