THE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE LEARNING MOTIVATION AND
THE READING COMPREHENSION OF FRESHMAN STUDENTS OF
ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM OF STAIN PALANGKA RAYA
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to measure the significant relationship
between the learning motivation, integrative and instrumental motivation, and
English reading comprehension for the freshmen students of Palangka Raya State
Islamic Collage. The formulation problem of the study was “what is the
relationship between the learning motivation and the students‟ reading
comprehension?”
In this study, the writer used correlation design, where it used to correlate
two variables that were the learning motivation as independent variable (X
variable) and the students‟ reading comprehension as dependent variable (Y
variable). The subject of this study was the freshmen students of English
department of Palangka Raya State Islamic Collage in academic year of
2012/2013 where the number of the subject was 94 students. To collect the data,
the writer used: (1) Questionnaire (learning motivation), (2) Test (reading
comprehension) as research instruments.
In analyzing the data, the writer used correlation “r” product moment
calculation. The result of manual calculation of correlation “r” product moment
showed that the calculated value, robserve (0.029) is lower than rt in 5 % of the
significance level, it was 0. 029 < 0. 195. Then, the result of correlation “r”
product moment using SPSS Statistic 19 Program showed that robserved was lower
than rtable at 0. 01 significance level or 0. 025 < 0. 195. Based on the research
finding, it indicated that HO (there is not significant positive correlation between
the learning motivation and the students‟ reading comprehension) was received
and Ha (there is a significant positive correlation between the learning motivation
and the students‟ reading comprehension) was rejected. It meant that student‟s
English learning motivation did not influence to the student‟s reading
comprehension of English text for the freshmen students of Palangka Raya State
Islamic Collage (STAIN).
Keywords: motivation, reading comprehension, and freshmen students.
KORELASI ANTARA MOTIVASI BELAJAR DAN PEMAHAMAN
MEMBACA MAHASISWA BARU PROGRAM STUDI BAHASA INGGRIS
STAIN PALANGKA RAYA
mahasiswa baru STAIN Palangka Raya program bahasa Inggris tahun ajaran
2012/2013 dengan jumlah 94 mahasiswa. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penulis
menggunakan: (1) Angket (motivasi belajar), (2) Tes (tes pemahaman membaca)
sebagai instrumen penelitian.
Dalam menganalisis data, penulis menggunakan perhitungan correlation
“r” product moment.
pemahaman membaca mahasiswa) ditolak. Ini berarti bahwa motivasi belajar
bahasa Inggris mahasiswa tidak mempengaruhi pemahaman membaca teks bahasa
Inggris mahasiswa baru STAIN Palangka Raya.
Kata kunci: motivasi, pemahaman membaca, dan mahasiswa baru.
