CORK

Cork oak Quercus suber bark is a renewable natural resource, totally recyclable and biodegradable. Its unique and irreplicable characteristics allow the use of cork in several purposes, i.e. utilitarian purposes (wine bottle stoppers) or for sophisticated purposes (airplane insulation). Used since ancient times in the Mediterranean world, with more predominance in Portugal (the world largest producer), where the Cork oak was established as National Tree in 2011. The extraction of the cork is a sustainable practice that does not imply cutting trees. Cork oak forests contribute to the annual sequestration of many tonnes of CO2. Cork oak forests and cork production reduce the world’s Carbon Footprint and thus contributing to a reduction in greenhouse effects and global warming. The Cork oak is a key component in ecosystems of high economic, social and ecological importance, which supports local communities and endangered species such as the Iberian lynx or the Iberian imperial eagle. Only made by nature!

Cork is a renewable natural resource, from Cork oak tree, a key component in ecosystems that supports local communities and endagered species.

CORK USED BY IMATERIAL IMATERIAL uses two kinds of cork agglomerate to manufacture its products: - Natural Cork Agglomerate. Made with small cork grains, not submitted to any kind of chemical treatment or man-made process. The agglomerate used is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

- Expanded Cork Agglomerate. It derives from the bark taken during Cork oak maintenance and cleaning operations, which is agglutinated with resins in the cork itself, without the use of any synthetic substances. It is made by expanding cork using steam, hence its dark colour.

THE CORK BOX COLLECTION

It is a tribute to the cork and the Cork oak, being part of Portugal’s natural heritage.

Like the Cork oak in the Mediterranean world, also the CORK BOX objects are a symbol of memory and multi-functionality, conceived for as many uses as imagination allows.

Inspired in the ancient know-how, the CORK BOX Collection aims to insert eco-friendly and contemporary design objects in the present lifestyle, to promote one sustainable future!
