At the University of Miami, the Lowe Art Museum has enhanced the campus’ natural landscape by developing a sculpture garden. NOW, THE UNIVERSITY GREEN, NESTLED BETWEEN SEVERAL OF THE SCHOOL’S MOST PROMINENT BUILDINGS, IS PUNCTUATED BY MORE THAN TWO DOZEN SCULPTURES.
Acutely Artistic
BY FASHIONING THE DRAB SLABS BENEATH THE UNIVERSITY METRORAIL STATION INTO OVERSIZED DOMINO GAME TILES, THE CONCRETE LANDSCAPES MIAMI INSTALLATION CREATED BY AUSTRALIAN ARTIST BO DROGA HAS TURNED THE ERSTWHILE LACKLUSTER AREA INTO A PLAYFUL AND INSPIRING SPACE.
As of April 2019, the parallel rows of pillars that support the tracks adjacent to Ponce de Leon Boulevard by the University of Miami have been carefully painted in black and white by Droga and a team of 12 volunteers. Because they vary in height — from 14 to 18 feet — part of the illusion is to make them all appear uniform in size.
A total of 48 pillars hold up the segment of Metrorail tracks between Stanford Drive and University Station. When the project is completed, visitors will be in for an additional treat, as Droga says he has included a message within the pattern of the domino pieces.

To the uninitiated, real estate development might sound like a joyless job. You might envision stacks of paperwork, navigating
mazes of city codes and laws, or crunching numbers on an endless spreadsheet. But according to Brent Reynolds, CEO and managing partner of NP International (NPI), building a place is about one thing: people.
“There is a quote I commonly use when it comes to describing NPI’s approach to any project: ‘We’re far more passionate about creating experiences than just building structures,’” says Reynolds. “Creating a space where people feel a sense of community is top on our list of those experiences.”
A mission to bring people together drives the design of Gables Station, an NPI mixed-use development project that combines residences with commercial and public spaces that’s rising in Coral Gables’ McFarland neighborhood. For starters, the general design of the project was inspired by the neighborhood itself.
“After getting a deeper understanding of the rich history of the community, we

IN 1995, UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP OF EXECUTIVE PRODUCING DIRECTOR BARBARA S. STEIN, ACTORS’ PLAYHOUSE ENTERED A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY TO RENOVATE THE HISTORIC MIRACLE THEATRE, TRANSFORMING THE ART DECO MOVIE HOUSE INTO THE COMPANY’S NEW HOME. The $8 million capital project resulted in a three-stage performance center with a 600-seat main stage, 300-seat balcony theater and 100-seat multi-purpose black box space. This
partnership was the catalyst for revitalizing downtown Coral Gables, enhancing the quality of life for the community and adding to its economic prosperity with more than 150,000
patrons attending events each year. The book Miracle on the Mile archives the exemplary private/public partnership and acknowledges the contributors who made this local story possible.
In the Books
OWN THE STORYIn the early 1980s, Mitchell Kaplan wanted to create a place for like-minded people to get together for thought-provoking
conversation and stimulating ideas. Hosting more than 60 author events a month in an awe-inspiring 1927 building, Books & Books grew to beyond that vision to become a point of pride for the whole City. Likewise, Café Demetrio
is the kind of place that celebrates the written word and invites creativity— over drinks and bites — with its regular poetry readings and enchanting courtyard that just begs to be the place where you finally get that manuscript written.
IT’S A MIRACLEWITH A MISSION TO ENRICH SOUTH FLORIDA’S CULTURAL VITALITY WITH HIGH CALIBER PRODUCTIONS AND ENCOURAGE THE CREATION AND PRODUCTION OF NEW WORKS, THE MIRACLE THEATRE IS A MAJOR SPONSOR FOR LOCAL CREATIVES.
The theater presents world premiers, including The Boy From Russia, Bombshells, Unreasonable Doubt, The Color of Desire, See Jane Run and Real Men, all written by Florida playwrights, with the last making its New York debut in the 2015 Musical Theater Festival. Last season, the company produced the critically acclaimed world premiere of Havana Music Hall, and in 2020, it will produce FUÁCATA! or a Latina’s Guide to Surviving the Universe, a collaboration between South Florida’s own Stuart Meltzer and the highly celebrated, three-time Carbonell Award-winning Cuban-American actress Elena María García. The theater is also renowned for generating licensing agreements for the newest work from New York, like the pre-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, August: Osage County, In the Heights, and many others.

FINDING A SPACE WHERE YOU can reflect, learn and grow is priceless.
This is truer still if that place happens to be a local business that’s also a hub
of intelligent exchanges, fun events and great coffee. In Coral Gables, you can find
that dynamic at the neighborhood book store or the local café.

Last year, when the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) included
the smart city initiatives in Coral Gables within its Global City Teams Challenge, the announcement reflected what the local tech community has known for a while: Coral Gables is developing into a tech hot spot. Those in the industry paid attention when the city launched the Coral Gables Smart City Hub as a public platform for exploring and downloading open data, discovering and building apps, and engaging to solve important local issues.
With a wellspring of local talent and just the right attributes, Coral Gables has become fertile ground for tech businesses to grow, expand and collaborate.
BY DREW LIMSKY
Noting that Florida was the birthplace of household staples like air-conditioning and Gatorade — among numerous other firsts — Crain’s Chicago Business reported that tech has long been in the state’s DNA. Coral Gables is one of the state’s leaders and is especially fertile ground for entrepreneurs, according to a study by Verizon. In its May 2019 issue, Inc. magazine reported that the telecommunications giant found Coral Gables to be one of the top 10 U.S. cities to
start a business, citing its highly educated population, along with the state’s tax friendliness. A small city with lots of college graduates is ideal according to the Verizon study, which concluded: “The smaller the city, the more room there is to grow.”
LOCALLY GROWN
The City’s growing reputation as a tech leader is illustrated by key players in the private sector based in Coral Gables.
Taking advantage of South Florida’s privileged location — at the crossroads of Latin America and the rest of the U.S. — eMerge Americas has organized around a major annual tech event that propagates an ecosystem of ideas and initiatives throughout the year. Past speakers have included figures like former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell; AOL co-founder Steve Case; Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; and former Mexican president Vicente Fox.
Programming revolves around topics such as Blockchain, artificial intelligence, M.I.T. innovators under 35; a summit focusing on women, innovation and technology; and seminars on how government and academia influence tech policy.

When people think of the City Beautiful movement of the early 20th century, they flash to cities like
Washington D.C., with its celebrated boulevards and circles. This ambitious urban planning initiative migrated to other American hubs, but the results were nowhere more successful and distinctive than in Coral Gables, with its storied, near-uniform Mediterranean Revival style. Any discussion of the nonprofit scene and the betterment of society — at the local level — must begin with the way Coral Gables looks and how it has maintained that distinctive characteristic since its incorporation in 1925.
Such a fine example of urban planning, as well as the maintenance it requires, doesn’t happen by accident. One of the country’s first planned communities requires protection, both from government and its own growing population. The City’s first historic preservation ordinance, established in 1973 — and its expansions in 1984 and 1990 — led to a resident-based safeguard: the Historic Preservation Board.
The Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, followed in 1991. Its goal is to

Ad Material Requirements*1. Ads can be sent in JPG or PSD format, although high-resolution PDF
files are preferred. All files must be in high-resolution (300 dpi at 100% of
your ad’s desired print dimensions) and CMYK. If files are not provided as
CMYK we cannot guarantee an exact match of color on press.
2. A color proof must accompany the ad for all formats, otherwise HCP
Media does not accept liability for files that do not print to expectations.*
3. Live material not intended to bleed must be kept at least .375” from all
sides to allow for trim.
4. Special note on double-page spreads: Perfect alignment — of type or
design — across the gutter of two facing pages is not guaranteed. Live
material on facing pages should remain at least .25” from the gutter.
