CIMSS was formed in 1980 through a MOU with NOAA. It resides within the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) and includes scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as well as graduate students and faculty from the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS)

Foster collaborative research among NOAA, NASA, and the University in those aspects of atmospheric and earth system science that exploit the use of satellite technology.

Serve as a center at which scientists and engineers working on problems of mutual interest may focus on satellite related research in atmospheric studies and earth system science.

Stimulate the training of scientists and engineers in the disciplines involved in the atmospheric and earth sciences.

Mission

Since 1980, CIMSS research has supported 86 MS. and 36 Ph.D graduate students.

CIMSS personnel represent a broad array of expertise that includes, faculty, staff, students and NOAA employees.

CIMSS is internationally recognized as a center of expertise in the area of remote sensing, particularly satellite meteorology. This expertise has lead to steady growth over the past 29 years

Through close collaborations with SSEC, NOAA, NASA and AOS, CIMSS conducts end-to-end research in remote sensing of the Earth system; from instrument development, through data collection and analysis, to applications and decision making processes.

IMAPP MODIS Air Quality Forecast Software Package version 1.0 release 5 June 2012 IDEA-I: Infusing satellite Data into Environmental Applications - International

First release of a globally configurable (user defines the domain) software package that uses either Terra or Aqua MODIS MOD04 Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) retrievals to identify local regions of high aerosol loading from which trajectories are initialized. A trajectory model is then run which provides a forecast of the horizontal and vertical movement of the aerosols over the next 48 hours. The package includes both a netCDF output product as well as hourly trajectory forecast images, which can be viewed from a web browser using PHP software that is also included.
